The Bogwheelers Club, who run the motorcycling sport of motocross in this country, have decided to break with tradition and have appointed one of their committee members, Owen Robinson, as the captain of Team Zimbabwe for this year’s FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championships in Zambia.

This year’s African Championships will be held at Mindola Motocross Park in Kitwe from August 17 to 19 where Zimbabwe will field a strong team of 44 junior and senior male and female riders who will pit their skills against other top bikers from Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Swaziland and the hosts Zambia.

And Yasmin Manuel, the secretary of the Bogwheelers Club, yesterday told The Herald that they have decided to select one of their committee members – Robinson – to be the team captain of Team Zimbabwe at this annual three-day continental dirt bike riding jamboree.

“Previously we used to pick one of our senior riders as the team captain but we found out that it’s a little bit hard for the rider to motivate other riders whilst competing at the same time and this time we’ve decided to try something new and we’ve named one of our committee members Owen Robinson to lead the team at this year’s African Championships while Warren Wasmuth, father to one of our top riders Regan, will be the team manager.

Team Zimbabwe have already stepped up their preparations for this year’s FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championships and one of the country’s top riders Regan Wasmuth, who is now based in South Africa, yesterday confirmed his participation at the continental event in Kitwe next weekend.

In Zambia, the talented 17-year-old rider will represent Zimbabwe in the 125cc Class alongside Tristan Grainger, Jayden Young, David Evans, Liam LeRoux and Luke Doran. Another gifted young rider Emmanuel Bako (12) will also be part of Team Zimbabwe at this year’s African Championships in which he will be showcasing his dirt bike riding skills in the juniors’ 65cc Class.

Zim Netball Coach Happy With Wc Preps

The Zimbabwe national netball team coach Lloyd Makunde says his charges have covered a lot of ground in addressing key aspects of the game ahead of the joint Africa Championships and 2019 World Cup qualifiers in Zambia next week.

The annual continental championship, which is slated for August 13 to 18 in Lusaka, will also work as qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool, England, in July next year.

Seven countries – Namibia, Kenya, Botswana, Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe and hosts Zambia – will battle it out for African glory with two top teams set to join Malawi and South Africa for the global showpiece.

Malawi and South Africa have already qualified automatically for the quadrennial competition by virtue of being ranked among the top six countries in the world.

The former have opted to participate at the annual fiesta as part of their preparations for the World Cup.

The Gems have been in camp for the past few weeks with a squad of 17 players who will be trimmed to 12 this afternoon. And with an average height of 1.69metres among his players, Makunde believes his side have s worked well to compliment that. The veteran gaffer has also been preaching for his players to retain their focus after they lost to Botswana in the Pent Series last June in a match they were favourites.

“We are working on our shortfalls and trying to perfect our strengths. You know our biggest worry in the team is lack of height.

“That has always been our problem area but we will have to compliment that with a fast-paced game. We are mentally and physically prepared for the challenge.

“We have to guard against complacency as this is also one of our major weaknesses when it comes to tournaments. The last time at the Pent Series, we missed gold after we put our foot off the pedal and let Botswana win.

“I was disappointed by that loss but I am happy we lost to Botswana at the Pent Series because it could have been at the Africa Championships/World Cup qualifiers. There are no longer small teams in the world of netball these days. Namibia, Botswana and Kenya can all surprise any team. On the other hand there are powerhouses like Zambia and Uganda who play consistently but we cannot be intimidated by all that.

In Zambia, the Gems will be banking on their experienced players such as Pauline Jani, Mercy Mukwadi and Ursula Ndlovu. The Gems are expected to leave for Zambia on Friday where four members of the technical team are scheduled to attend a two-day Confederation of African Netball grading course before the commencement of the games.

Zimbabwe Netball Association president, Leticia Chipandu, said Africa B-graded umpire Agness Chiroodza and C-graded coaches John Banda, Alex Masimba and Nozimpho Mpofu will be part of the course as the country attempts to move with the changing times in the game.

Hokonya Withdraws From Zifa Race

The ZIFA election took another turn yesterday with aspiring presidential candidate Patrick Hokonya withdrawing from the race and instead throwing his weight behind those in charge of domestic football.

Hokonya had been preparing a challenge to become the next ZIFA president when elections are held in December.

The 45-year-old administrator was the first man to openly declare his candidature in April.

Four months on, Hokonya has had a change of heart.

He said he has now thrown his weight behind the Philip Chiyangwa executive at ZIFA to continue managing the affairs of the association.

Following the streamlining recommended by FIFA, ZIFA’s board is now made up of a president, his deputy and four members who are elected by Congress and also include a member representing the Premier Soccer League and the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League.

Hokonya, who had his first dance with the ZIFA board in 2010, had been hoping to return as the leader of the football body.

“I think there is need to let those that have both the capacity and the time to run the game do so and I am ready to offer my support to them.

“I also take this opportunity to congratulate Omega Sibanda and Philip Chiyangwa for winning the parliamentary seats in their constituencies.

“Many people who are in football will be happy to have such people in Parliament because football is a huge employer in the country, one only needs to look at the numbers employed at the clubs and the downstream industries.

“We need its voice and that of sport in general to be carried into Parliament.”

Hokonya said he has a passion for grassroots football and had been charmed to note that both Chiyangwa and Sibanda had, in their political campaigns, pledged to set up structures in Zvimba South and Vungu which are both rural constituencies.

ZIFA, through technical director Wilson Mutekede, have also stepped up their act to develop the game from grassroots through to high performance.

“I have been following their campaigns in their constituencies and they have tried to establish football structures in those constituencies, among the various projects they have lined up for the people in their areas,” said Hokonya.

“I am a supporter of football first and an administrator second. When you are an administrator you want a person at the helm who can support the structures.

“It is also very important that we have people who are in football to grow the game and not to try and make money out of football.

“We must have the conscience and the consensus to let those who are in a better position to administer the game and lead it do so and we should offer our support and that I is what I am doing.”

Although more names are likely to be thrown into the race for the ZIFA leadership when the ZIFA Electoral Committee opens nominations for the board, Hokonya believes in continuity.

But Hokonya says he is content with the direction the game is taking and will probably relaunch his bid at the end of the four-year tenure of the next ZIFA board.

Hokonya’s football administration career started off at Zimbabwe Saints when he was appointed the club’s treasurer in an interim committee set up by the now defunct club’s life members in 2006.

The following year, he rose to become the club’s secretary-general, but lasted just a year after leaving to take up the position of inaugural Central Region chairman in 2010, subsequently becoming a ZIFA board member.

Back then regional chairpersons automatically became ZIFA board members, but following recommendations from FIFA, who expressed reservations about a bloated board, the association amended their constitution.

Bako, Wasmuth Gear Up for Hectic Schedule

Two of the country’s top motocross riders Emmanuel Bako and Regan Wasmuth are gearing up for a hectic schedule in the next two weekends in which they will compete in two-tough regional and continental championships in South Africa and Zambia.

First up for the two talented young motorcycle riders is the fifth round of the 2018 South African National Championship series at Zone 7 in Cape Town this coming Saturday before they fly back to Harare to team-up with the rest of Team Zimbabwe members for this year’s FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championships set for Zambia next weekend.

The 2018 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championships are scheduled to run for three days from August 17 to 19 at Mindola Motocross Park in Kitwe, Zambia, where Zimbabwe will field a strong team of 44 junior and senior female and male riders who will pit their skills on the track against other top bikers from Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Swaziland and the hosts Zambia.

Bako (12) and Wasmuth (17) are currently members of two-top South African motocross teams – Team Vision Racing Team and Linea Pro Racing Team – and in this year’s South African National Championship series the former is competing in the 65cc and 85cc (Juniors) classes while the latter is racing in the 125cc High School Class.

In fact, Bako and Wasmuth are strongly in the running for the 65cc and 125cc High School titles in this year’s South African Nationals where they are both sitting in second place in the group standings of their respective classes.

Bako, with 178 points, is kicking hard behind the heels of his South African rival Lucca Mynhardt in the 65cc Class in which the latter has also amassed 178 points going into this weekend’s fifth round of the South African Nationals in Cape Town.

Wasmuth, on the other hand, has a mountain to climb in his pursuit of the 1255cc High School title in South Africa as he has to close the gap between himself and the current points leader Justin Sangster who has amassed 179 points as compared to the former’s 155.

And Wasmuth yesterday told The Herald that he is ready for the challenge at this weekend’s fifth round of the South African Nationals in Cape Town and then at next weekend’s tough African Championships in Zambia.

NICHRUT head coach John Nyikadzino believes the presence of players coached by Tonderai Ndiraya in his team could help them when they meet Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab on Saturday.

Washington Pakamisa, Rodreck Mutuma, Themba Ndlovu and Carlos Rusere are some of the players who worked under Ndiraya at Dynamos.

Pakamisa also spent two seasons at Baobab and Nyikadzino said the quartet have an idea of how the Ngezi gaffer models his troops.

Armed with such inside information, Nyikadzino warned the platinum miners to brace themselves for another defeat.

He, however, conceded Ngezi have one of the best teams in the league.

“We have a very good team that is doing very well in the Premier League and I am confident that they will be able to preserve our Premiership status.

“We are playing against Ngezi Platinum in Mhondoro, but I am confident we can come with all the points in that game,” said Nyikadzino.

“We have players who have worked under Ndiraya before and their knowledge will be very helpful in that game, they know what to expect.

“Ngezi are a very good team and I think they will be definitely be one of the teams that will fight for the title until the end of the season.

“But in my camp I have very experienced players who will be able to get the result against such a good team like Ngezi.”

ZimRights welcomes ruling

Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) says it welcomes the release of 27 MDC Alliance activists on bail, but unreservedly condemns the crackdown on opposition supporters across the country.

The released activists were arbitrarily arrested after police raided the party’s headquarters in Harare and rounded up everyone, including polling agents, party officials and activists.

“ZimRights condemns further reports of night-time raids of MDC Alliance officials’ homes, manhunts and abduction of their family members, torture and interrogations by armed and hooded people suspected to be members of the security forces.

“Equally condemnable, are widespread reports of intimidation of polling agents in the just-ended 2018 harmonised elections in rural areas such as Mt. Darwin and another case where a losing candidate for Chivi Central constituency found bullet casings on the doorstep of his home.

Chivayo appeals to High Court

Chivayo and his company — Intratek Zimbabwe (Private) Limited — are being charged with fraud, money laundering and contravening two sections of the Exchange Control Act.

His lawyer Lewis Uriri told the Daily News yesterday they will be filing an appeal at the High Court in order to secure Chivayo’s release.

“We will be approaching the High Court today (yesterday) late afternoon to file the appeal,” Uriri said.

The appeal comes after Harare magistrate Elisha Singano ruled in favour of the State, which had argued that Chivayo is facing a serious offence which could see him being handed a lengthy prison term if convicted.

Singano said Chivayo was arrested at the airport trying to flee to South Africa, adding that to release him at this stage would undermine the proper administration of justice.

He further said Chivayo was facing a serious offence which involved public funds and that the State had a strong case against him.

The jet-setting businessman had offered to surrender his passport as well as abide by terms that may have been preferred by the court.

Chivayo, came under pressure in recent months to defend the power deals that he signed with power utility Zesa Holdings and its subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC).

This was after it had emerged that Intratek had failed to deliver on the contracts.

Among the deals, the burly businessman — who is often referred to by his associates as Sir Wicknell — was awarded a $200 million tender for the Gwanda Solar Project.

The State is alleging that sometime in 2012, ZPC resolved to increase its national grid.

A feasibility study was carried out and a tender was floated in August 2013 for the installation of a 100 Megawatt solar power plant in Gwanda.

The tender was awarded to a Chinese company China Jianxi at a cost of $183 million.

Chivayo participated in the tender with a bid of $248 million which was ranked third lowest but it was, however, alleged his accomplice, former Energy minister Samuel Undenge, interfered with the process and directed ZPC to award the tender to Chivayo and his company.

He reportedly won the tender at $172 848 597.

The court was told that on October 23, 2015, ZPC acted on the misrepresentation and signed a contract with Chivayo for implementation of the project.

It was alleged that ZPC released $5 607 814, 24 into Intratek’s bank account for the project to take off but allegedly converted or transferred the money into various individual and company accounts.

He was also authorised by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to load $849 479 into his visa cards for the importation of earth-moving equipment in the US for construction works at Gwanda Solar Project

However, it was alleged Chivayo did not import anything.

Rooney in doldrums

The 26-year-old suffered the injury after he was hit by a car in Epworth five months ago.

He was initially ruled out for three weeks and his team took a gamble to register him for the first half of the season.

However, it was found out he had suffered torn ligaments which needed surgery.

So delicate is the injury that, if successfully operated on, the midfielder would need at least 10 months to fully recover.

The CAPS United medical team had recommended that the procedure be done in South Africa for a fee reported to be in the region of R115 000.

Zambia-based Zimbabwean doctor, Enos Mufushwa, offered to help the talented star in the neighbouring country for a token fee.

But, just when Chitiyo was about to undergo surgery his manager Kudakwashe Chidemo stopped the procedure saying an unnamed ABSA Premiership side had offered to help the midfielder for a more advanced operation.

Chitiyo has since returned home with his manager yesterday evading questions on when the midfielder will eventually get the career-saving operation.

The player said he would not comment much on the issue.

“Football is my life and I am not training. I had gone to Zambia with the hope that I would get the much-needed help, but for the reasons the media has already reported, I couldn’t get the help,” said Chitiyo.

“I had a scan done on the knee, but the operation couldn’t go on. I cannot train now because the doctors warned that I would aggravate the injury.

“I cannot comment on mere plans because they are just plans. It is very difficult for me to say anything which I am not sure of,” said Chitiyo.

Mufushwa warned the midfielder’s career will be in danger if the operation is delayed for longer.

“Ronald Chitiyo is yet to be operated on as his manager, Kudakwashe Chidemo, instructed us to stop as he said a South African club had pledged to pay for the player’s operation which is more advanced than the one we had scheduled to undertake,” said Mufushwa.

“As a concerned Zimbabwean, I had volunteered to help the player. Chitiyo’s case touched my heart as I heard something in the region of R115 000 was needed for him to get operated on.

“He sustained the injury in February and he is still waiting. The more he waits the more the muscles undergo fibrosis and even the arthroscopy will be expensive.

“The one we wanted to carry out costs $545 which is only for the facilities and other minor logistics, but the one the said South African team is proposing needs $12 000.

“The only difference is that the one we had scheduled will leave a slightly bigger scar, but the player will heal fast and play again.”

Spaniard Kepa, 23, is being brought in as a replacement for Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic, 24, is also set to join Chelsea on a season-long loan.

Mourinho hits back at critics

MANCHESTER. — Jose Mourinho has taken aim at Manchester United’s critics on the eve of the new English Premier League soccer season.

Mourinho has also taken aim at Liverpool and Tottenham, saying they “win nothing” but are painted as “serial winners” while his Manchester United get no credit.

On the eve of the new season, which starts with United’s clash against Leicester City tonight at 9pm, Mourinho also claimed that finishing second last term, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, was “one of the greatest achievements” of his career.

But he complained about what he sees as preferential treatment afforded to the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham. Both clubs finished below United last season in the English Premier League yet Mourinho claims they are projected as “serial winners” despite failing to land a trophy since 2012 and 2008 respectively. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool did reach they Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid, while the Premier League’s other biggest clubs, Chelsea and Arsenal, disappointed and missed out on the top four.

FAVOURITE Marshal Jonga swept to victory in the Beach Soccer election in the capital yesterday with the Harare business executive immediately pledging to put shoulders to the wheel to get the game moving.

Jonga garnered eight votes in a crushing win over outgoing chairman, Joseph Musariri, who only got one vote.

Two delegates abstained and one could not vote as he did not produce positive identification.

Moments after being declared the winner, Jonga said he would not waste time before getting down to work as the Beach Soccer leader.

He said the game was in the doldrums in the country and needed everyone to play a part in its revival.

Musariri, who has been at the helm of the ZIFA affiliate for the past seven years, did not show up at the election venue.

Ironically, he had unsuccessfully attempted to suspend Jonga from the poll early this week, but the move was set aside by             ZIFA.

The association clarified that the build-up to the polls was being administered by the Electoral Committee which had already verified the eligibility of the candidates.

Affiliates, said the Association, could not disqualify candidates as that was the job of the Electoral Committee.

Jonga said yesterday’s election had brought an end to the period of campaigning and that “it is now time to put shoulders to the wheel and work.”

He thanked those who voted for him and pledged to work with those who didn’t vote for him.

“I would want to thank all the members of Beach Soccer for the confidence they have placed in me and I must emphasise from the onset that this is not about Jonga, it is about Zimbabwe getting its Beach Soccer off the ground,” Jonga said.

ZIFA Electoral Committee chairman Vusilizwe Vuma led the crew that oversaw the election.

Jonga said his first port of call would be to set up a fully-fledged working committee for the game.

“It is so disheartening to realise that the game has just been existing in name only for the past seven or so years.

“Sport is my passion and my heart bleeds if something like that happens.

“And it is one of the reasons why I decided to contest for the chairmanship of the Zimbabwe Beach Soccer.

“My first port of call will be to have a fully-constituted committee to help in the day-to-day running of the game.

“People had just lost interest in the sport since there was nothing tangible on the ground.

“But, the good thing about Beach Soccer, is that it is not an expensive sport.”

Jonga said his job would be made easier by the fact that the country was endowed with natural resources such as sand, which is key in setting up Beach Soccer facilities.

“Beach Soccer is a cut-across sport and we hope by the time we put all structures in place, it will be everywhere in the country from schools up to the top-flight league,” said Jonga.

“We are obviously bound to meet some challenges, but no task is insurmountable. We are ready to take the sport to the next level.

“Zimbabwe should find its way to the world map of Beach Soccer.

“We will be realistic to ourselves and we will use the first year to get ready for international competitions then we can take on the continental teams.

“But, within that first year, we will strive to play within the COSAFA region and then develop from there.”

Jonga is an ally of ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa who this week also received the support of former Central Region boss Patrick Hokonya who had earlier indicated he would battle for the leadership of domestic football.

CAPS United have finally committed to foot the bill for midfielder Ronald Chitiyo’s knee operation in South Africa with club chief executive Cuthbert Chitima saying the pint-sized player would undergo surgery within the next two weeks.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury after he was hit by a car in Epworth in February.

He suffered torn ligaments and needs an operation which costs R115 000 in South Africa.

Zambia-based Zimbabwean doctor, Enos Mufushwa, offered to help the talented star in the neighbouring country.

But, just when Chitiyo was about to undergo surgery, his manager Kudakwashe Chidemo stopped the procedure saying an unnamed ABSA Premiership side had offered to help the midfielder undergo an advanced operation.

The midfielder then returned home after his manager and Mufushwa failed to agree on the way forward, but not before Chitiyo expressed disappointment over the manner the whole issue was handled.

Medical experts have been warning that if the player wasn’t treated urgently his career would be in danger of ending prematurely.

Chitiyo will still have to wait, at least, seven months before kicking a ball if the operation is done successfully.

And yesterday Chitima said his club was not aware of what has been happening with their player since they only came to know that Chitiyo had gone to Zambia for an operation through the media.

Chitima said the Green Machine administration has been running around to raise funds to help the star.

“We were not aware that Ronald (Chitiyo) was going to Zambia for an operation.

“We read that in the newspapers,” said Chitima.

“He didn’t communicate with us therefore we weren’t part of the arrangements. But, as it is at the moment, I think next week or the week after, he is going to be operated on.

“The club is going to fund that.

“Chitiyo is part and parcel of our team, not just our team, but the national team as well and we need to look after him.

“We actually planned something with the president (Farai Jere) yesterday and he promised that next week or next week but one, Chitiyo will be operated on.”

He said Makepekepe are always keen to help their players irrespective of where or how they would have suffered injuries.

“Of course, he suffered the injury during off-season and he was off-duty, but he is one of our own and we know what he can bring to us as a team when he is fit.

“I think we have got a role to play since he is our player.

“Chitiyo is a good person on and off the field. He is one player whose discipline on and off the pitch is unquestionable. We feel that, as a club, we should help him.

“It’s not that we have not been unwilling to pay for the operation, but we have been running around trying to raise the required money.

“Chitiyo, just like any other player at CAPS United, deserves the club’s support whenever there is a problem.

“That’s our policy at CAPS United, we care for our players, especially in times of need like the situation Chitiyo is in.

“It’s only that it took a little bit time for the team to raise the required resources.

“I personally wish Chitiyo a quick recovery because he is naturally a good guy.”

Makepekepe are fifth on the table with 31 points, 14 behind leaders FC Platinum.

They take on Black Rhinos at Rufaro tomorrow with coach Lloyd Chitembwe set to include new signings Mitchelle Katsvairo and Thabani Goredema in the squad.

Manyuchi in Russia for big fight

Gilbert Munetsi Sports Correspondent
CHARLES MANYUCHI will tomorrow night battle to start his redemption exercise when he challenges Russian boxer Magomed Kurbanov for the International Boxing Federation super welterweight title at the DIVS Arena, Ekatarinberg.

He goes into the ring with fond memories of a sweet victory posted at the same venue in May 2016 when he defeated Dmitry Mikhaylenko – who then boasted of 21 matches without defeat – to claim the World Boxing Council silver crown.

But Kurbanov (23) is a different ball game who, from the look of his colouful boxing resume, should have deservedly earned his predator’s moniker of “Black Lion.”

He comes into the fight with 14 wins (11 of them by knockout) and no blemish on his record.

The DIVS Arena is also a familiar hunting territory for the Russian who has fought there seven times.

While Manyuchi is rated number one out of a small pool of five super welterweights in Zimbabwe, Kurbanov equally occupies pole position in his native Russia, among 55 other boxers in his division.

The Zimbabwean has since dropped in the world rankings to 35 while the Russian sits at number 22 out of 1 826.

The KO rates for the two are at 50% and 79% in favour of Kurbanov and a win by either boxer will automatically mean a giant leap for him on the ladder.

The Russian brags of several decorations from the ring which include the World Boxing Organisation Youth Super welterweight, WBO Inter-Continental title, as well as the World Boxing Council Asian and the WBC EuroAsia Pacific Boxing Council super welterweight belts.

Manyuchi, speaking from Russia yesterday, told The Herald he was not fazed by the statistics of his adversary which he said were “just numbers.”

The Zimbabwean has  won the African Boxing Union welterweight, the WBC international (twice) and the WBC silver, which he ultimately lost to Uzbek Qudratillo Abduxarov in Singapore in March last year, thereby rendering him crownless.

“I’m geared up for this fight, it means everything for me and my career so I will not take anything to chance.

‘’Like any mortal, I have learnt my mistakes and the fall that succeeded the pride in Singapore is still very fresh in my memory.

“I have scaled up the divisions from welterweight to super welterweight and this means even my fighting style has changed to suit the current circumstances.

‘’My team has been working on that around the clock and a victory in a new division is every boxer’s wish,” said Manyuchi.

He said he would be dedicating the fight to Langton “Schoolboy” Tinago who gave him advice to “make hay while the sun is still shining.”

German Tutov is promoting the fight in a deal that will see the Zimbabwean take part in several international assignments brokered by the veteran Russian promoter.

Nkhatha living his dream

Sports Reporter

FORMER SuperSport United striker Kingston Nkhatha, who recently joined Dynamos, says he is living his dream as he had always wanted to play for the Glamour Boys.

Nkhatha is returning to the domestic Premierships 11 years after he left for South Africa where he played for a number of teams, including Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United.

Dynamos, who are having one of their worst seasons, roped in Nkhatha during the mid-season transfer window as they seek to transform their side and turn their fortunes around.

Yesterday, the Glamour Boys had a friendly match against Division One side ZRP FC at Morris Depot.

Speaking on the sidelines of the match, Nkhatha said it was always his wish to play for Dynamos.

“I am settling well, the guys welcomed me in a nice way, everyone is friendly and, so far, with the days that I have trained with them they have been so professional and good friends to have and good soldiers to fight for Dynamos.

“Coming back from playing in South Africa after over a decade, coming back home, I always wanted to play for Dynamos.

“Before I left, I almost joined Dynamos, so it was my dream and my wish that before I finish playing I have to play for Dynamos.

“And also I need to win a league title in Zimbabwe because I have never done it before.”

It appears Nkhatha has given a hint he will stay longer than the end of the year at DeMbare given the Glamour Boys are already out of the running for the league title this year.

Nkhatha signed a short-term deal after being impressed by the vision which new Dynamos president, Solomon Sanyamandwe, has for the club.

“If everything goes well I will be here.

“There are so many talented players at Dynamos now, the youngsters show that they are willing to go further and with the guidance of the coach, I think by next season we will be talking about something different,” said Nkhatha.

He said football was a team game and not about individuals.

“When I joined them I knew where they are so the only thing that we need to do is to win our games and move away from where we are,” he said.

“We will then see what happens at the end of the season.

“It’s not about only the strikers scoring, in modern football everyone can score the goal, it’s all about team effort and so many guys entering the box and taking the chances.

“Hopefully, things will go our way, then we start winning and scoring more goals.”

Denver Mukamba, returning from a short-lived loan stint at CAPS United and Brett Amidu, on loan from champions FC Platinum, were also busy on the pitch yesterday.

And it seems coach Lloyd Mutasa is gradually accepting Mukamba back into the team after their standoff over his errant behaviour.

“The relationship between me and Denver is like a father and a son, a coach and a player,” said Mutasa.

“I think you look at Kingston, he has got experience behind him, he is a goal-scorer, he is a creative player as well, very mature.

“You look at Denver Mukamba, an experienced player as well . . . very talented young man. You look at Brett Amidu he is technically gifted, humble person and a very committed player.

“I think you look at the games that we have played so far, you look at the scoring rate, I think we haven’t been scoring a lot, probably a goal per game, which is not good enough when you are Dynamos.”

DeMbare and Bosso will have to wait a bit longer before their showdown after their match was postponed once again as the league matches resume this weekend.

KING PETER’S MAGIC

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
WHEN another English Premiership marathon gets underway tonight, in a battle between its all-time dominant force and its most unlikely of champions, it would be the 21st championship race since Peter Ndlovu left its ranks after having created a piece of history for himself.

Manchester United — who have won a record 13 titles in the era of the English Premiership, after it dumped its old identity as the Division One League — host Leicester City, the Foxes who stunned the world when, against all odds, they found a way to transform themselves into champions two years ago.

The Red Devils were champions in 1997, when King Peter — the first African to play in the English Premiership — made his final appearance in that league back in an era when even Newcastle could compete for honours and finished second in that marathon with Arsenal ending in third place.

Leicester City were also part of the English Premiership that season and finished ninth while Coventry City finished just a place, and point, above relegation trouble with Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest getting the chop during Ndlovu’s swansong Premiership campaign.

But, even though 21 years have passed since King Peter graced those Premiership fields in England, the impact that he made during his spell at Coventry — which saw him attracting the attention of Liverpool and Arsenal — is still being felt up to this day with the footprints, which his magical left feet, still being visible.

It’s a measure of Ndlovu’s quality that hardly a season of the English Premiership passes without his name being mentioned and that he made such an enduring impact, while playing for a modest football club like Coventry City, confirms he was, indeed, a class act.

A lot has changed since the days when the Flying Elephant was still part of the stars of the English Premiership.

The league has transformed itself into the most watched sports league in the world, dwarfing every other league in any other sport, as it is broadcast in 212 territories and, when Manchester United and Leicester get the marathon underway tonight, the game is likely to be seen in more than 640 million homes.

When you bring in those who watch the match in sports bars and other places, the English Premiership now has a potential TV audience of about 4.7 billion.

And it has become a money-making machine.

Central payments for the 2016–17 season amounted to £2,398,515,773 across its 20 clubs who make up its membership with each team receiving a flat participation fee of £35,301,989.

France, who won the World Cup in Russia recently, took home $38 million but West Bromwich Albion, who finished bottom of the English Premiership in the last season after winning just six matches, took home a $45 million participation fee, seven million more than the world champions.

Then, there is also the additional payments for television broadcasts (£1,016,690 for general UK rights to match highlights, £1,136,083 for each live UK broadcast of their games and £39,090,596 for all overseas rights) and commercial rights (a flat fee of £4,759,404) that also come into the coffers of the clubs.

There is also a fee based on final league position, £1,941,609 multiplied by each finishing place, counted from the foot of the table, which means that a team like Burnley which finished in 16th place last year, received 5 × £1,941,609 = £9,708,045 merit payment.

Peter’s Coventry might have disappeared down the football league ladder where they are struggling in the backwaters of English football but they are one of 49 clubs that have had the privilege of playing in the English Premiership.

Only six of those clubs, led by Manchester United with their 13 league championship titles, have been crowned champions since 1992 with Chelsea in second place with five titles, Arsenal in third place with three titles, the same as Manchester City, while Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers have won one title each.

United manager Jose Mourinho is the only manager, still in the English Premiership, with more than one title given that his collection of three titles matches that of Arsene Wenger, who left at the end of last season, while Sir Alex Fergsuon leads the way with 13 titles.

For all the money that has rolled into the English Premiership, and all the stars who have graced the league, they haven’t forgotten the boy who arrived from Bulawayo and turned the league on its head with his bag of skills.

And, this week, one of the players inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, Gary Neville, the former Manchester United captain who is now a television pundit with SkySports, remembered the Flying Elephant.

Neville hosted Irishman, Robbie Keane, on his show, Gary Neville Soccerbox, where he takes his guests down memory lane of their time in the English Premiership and, during the course of their discussion, the spotlight fell on King Peter.

Keane is a former striker of Coventry City and Neville, who won eight league titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions League titles and one Intercontinental title with United, remembered the day when Peter gave him a roasting at Highfield Road.

‘’I went to Highfield road and my first game there was against Peter Ndlovu, remember him?’’ Neville asked Keane during the television show, with the Irishman, who went on to play for Tottenham and Liverpool, saying he remembered the Flying Elephant, of course.

‘’He destroyed me, absolutely destroyed me,’’ said Neville, in glowing tribute to the way King Peter made their match-up a mismatch that day when the Flying Elephant scored one in Coventry City’s 2-3 defeat to United whose goals came from Paul Scholes and a double by Andy Cole.

‘’You think about Coventry, big crowd and great ground.’’

Coventry City have not forgotten their talisman from Bulawayo, either and, on the occasion of his 42nd birthday, three years ago, the club paid a special tribute to Peter on their official website.

‘’Coventry City legend Peter Ndlovu is celebrating his 42nd birthday today and to honour him we have given you a chance to relieve some of his best Sky Blue goals,’’ the club said.

‘’Ndlovu scored 43 times in 176 appearances for City between 1991 and 1997, often in crucial games and often spectacularly. He was nicknamed ‘Nuddy’ by the Sky Blue Army who took the Zimbabwe international to their hearts.

‘’On Wednesday August 21st he became the first African player to play in the Premier League, paving the way for the likes of Yaya Toure, Kanu and Finidi George that have followed him.

‘’We start with not just one goal but three as he turned on the style at one of the most famous grounds in football.

Vs Liverpool (Hat-trick) — March 14th, 1995

‘’Some people would be daunted going into a tough away trip to Anfield. But not Ndlovu. He fired a hat-trick, the first by a visiting player since 1961, as City earned a famous win. His first goal was a real poachers’ effort, arriving at the back post and firing past David James. His second was a confidently taken penalty. But his last goal was something special. Picking the ball up from halfway he slalomed his way through the Liverpool defence before unleashing an unstoppable strike that drew applause from the Kop end.

Vs Aston Villa, September 28th, 1991

‘’In one of his first games for the club, Ndlovu became an instant hero as he scored the only goal of a passionate Midlands derby against the Villa. There did not seem to be much on when he picked the ball up, but his trademark dribbling offered him a sight at goal and he smashed the ball into the corner with the outside of his foot, sending Highfield Road into raptures.

Vs Arsenal, September 7th, 1991

‘’City made a habit of winning at Highbury in the early 90’s and Ndlovu announced himself in the top division of English football by scoring the winner on this occasion. He nipped in to dispossess the defender, before showing remarkable composure to fire the ball past David Seaman.’’

Glad to be back home: Denver

BAD boy Denver Mukamba is delighted to be back at Dynamos after an eventful loan spell at city rivals Caps United and has revealed a burning determination to revive his career, as well as sprucing his tattered image.

BY HENRY MHARA

Denver Mukamba

The hugely talented but equally naughty midfielder was grudgingly readmitted back to the Harare giants last month after his loan deal at United had been cut short over his errant behaviour and truancy.

It took the intervention of the club’s executive to convince coach Lloyd Mutasa to accept Mukamba back into the team, as the pair’s relationship had broken down irretrievably after the latter’s misdemeanours at the end of last term.

He was one of the four players that were registered by Dynamos in the just-closed transfer window, together with strikers Kingston Nkhatha, Munashe Kaseke and the returning Brett Amidu, signings that seek to revive the team’s faltering season.

Speaking after the team’s training session in Harare yesterday, Mukamba said he was thankful and, at the same time, delighted that he had been given another chance, and would not want to waste it this time.

“I’m very happy to be back, my heart has always been blue,” he said.

“I want to achieve a lot of things with Dynamos. Where we are on the log standings is not pleasing. As a big club, we should be up there, so we are now fighting to finish in the top three or somewhere there.”

Dynamos currently sit on 13th position on the log standings with 22 points, just three above Nichrut who occupy the relegation cut-off point.

With the former champions inactive this weekend after their blockbuster clash against Highlanders was postponed, they could find themselves deep in the relegation zone at the end of the weekend matches.

The previous few months have seen Mukamba attracting a lot of controversy, from getting banned from Dynamos for failing to turn up for training, and subsequently shipped to bitter rivals Caps United, to being chased away at United who also failed to tame the players’ errant behaviour.

This is a case of a player who has just refused to repent, but Mukamba has refused the tag and to be judged over his past sins.

“I came back to play football, to work for the team and I want to achieve a lot of things, and make progress in my life through this sport,” he said.

“I don’t want to say a lot of things in the media, I will do most of my talking on the field of play. I made a lot of mistakes, but I’m only human.”

On his relationship with Mutasa, Mukamba said: “I don’t have a problem with coach Lloyd, our relationship is good. Our relationship has always been good since we have known each other. He is the one who discovered me, so I can’t say we have a problem really.”

He also gave an opinion of some of the new arrivals to the team, and believes they are the link that the team was missing.

“Nkhatha is very experienced and that could prove invaluable for the team. Amidu is also a young promising player, and then you include me in there, the combination is massive,” Mukamba said.

Never short of confidence, Mukamba is disappointed their match against Highlanders has been postponed one again.

“It’s too bad our match against Highlanders has been postponed, we will have to wait for yet another week. But we will play that match, and I cant just wait. I’m ready for the big match and we are hopeful of winning down there in Bulawayo,” he said.

Chitembwe praises Katsvairo

Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe has praised newly-signed forward Michelle Katsvairo’s hunger as they brace for a tricky Castle Lager Premiership tie against Black Rhinos at the National Sports Stadium tomorrow.

BY GARISH PHIRI

The Green Machine have struggled for goals and in their three matches so far in the second half of the season, where they have drawn blanks in all.

The burden of getting goals has been carried by John Zhuwawu, who has been crying out for a helping hand.

His striking partner, Simba Nhivi, who contributed five goals for the team has since left to join Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Caps United will be looking to benefit from Katsvairo’s pace as they look to collect more points in the second half of the season than they did in the first.

Chitembwe yesterday hailed the former Chicken Inn striker’s work rate at training and believes he will be a good addition to the team in their second half endeavours.

“What has been very good for us is having a player like Michelle (Katsvairo) already craving to play for us. That shows the amount of belief that these players have in this team,” he said.

“It’s a very big team and having a player like him showing that kind of desire is key. We are very lucky to have a player like him considering the technical ability, experience and intellect point in terms of application and understanding of the tactics.

It is likely that Chitembwe will unleash his newfound star in tomorrow’s clash. Caps United have 32 points, while Black Rhinos have 29 points so far this season.

Rhinos have been boosted by their new sponsorship package, which will help improve the players’ welfare.

They also target a strong second half of the season.

Chitembwe is not underrating his opponents as they have had a good record in the past few games and have shown that they are a good side.

Despite losing a couple of players during the transfer window, Chitembwe is satisfied with the squad he has.

He also praised Black Rhinos coach Herbert Maruwa’s sterling work at Rhinos.

“Maruwa has done a very good job. Their position on the log does not lie. It’s a true reflection of the amount that he has put into the team. Well done to him and for us it’s a decent job and considering the fact that probably we are the team that has lost so many players over the last first half of the season,” Chitembwe said.

“It’s expected but when you lose players you try to come up, build on the cohesion and bring in players so that at the end of the day you stabilise performance and ultimately get results. I am very happy with what the boys have done so far.”

Chevrons begin preps for SA, Bangladesh

Zimbabwe cricket team head coach Lalchand Rajput is positive the return of senior players will ensure the Chevrons are competitive in tours of South Africa and Bangladesh.

Strides made in the revival of Zimbabwean cricket suffered a huge setback after succumbing to some humiliating defeats at the hands of Pakistan.

Weeks after Pakistan’s tour of the country, the Chevrons are back in camp preparing for tours to South Africa and Bangladesh.

Despite the heavy defeats to Pakistan, Rajput believes the return of senior players namely Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, and Graeme Cremer will ensure the Chevrons are more competitive.

“It is always good to have that balance between the younger players and the more experienced guys some of whom were not there when we played in the tri-series with Pakistan and Australia. To have them back is a great thing that I feel should boost the team as we gear up for Bangladesh and South Africa,” said Rajput.

With the team assembling for camp early, Rajput believes thorough preparations will be vital.

“It is good to be beginning our preparations very early. This is the area that I feel is key for us. We need to work on our fitness as well as skill such that when we play South Africa and Bangladesh we are in a position to compete and show what we are really made of,” Rajput added.

Zimbabwean will tour South Africa in September and clash against the Proteas in 3 ODIs and 3 T-20 encounters.

The Chevrons will then head to Bangladesh thereafter for encounters scheduled for October.
