Costa crashes out of Europa

ZIMBABWE international Costa Nhamoinesu met his fate in the Europa Cup on Thursday night when his side AC Sparta Praha, commonly known as Sparta Prague, crashed out of the tournament at the hands of Serbian side Spartak Subotica on aggregate.

Nhamoinesu played 85 minutes as Praha beat the visiting Serbian side 2-1 at home on the night, but the result was not enough to overturn the 2-0 defeat they had suffered in the first leg of the second round qualifiers.

In the end, Praha, who are perennial campaigners in this competition, were eliminated on 3-2 scoreline by the Serbian upstarts.

This was the first time the teams have met, but Praha apparently blew it with a disastrous performance in the first leg.

History has it that they had never overturned a first leg defeat in knockout ties and pressure was immense on coach Pavel Hapal and his charges to go against the long standing records on Thursday night.

Despite missing some of their key players like Vaclav Kadlec, Praha seemed on course when skipper Josef Sural opened the scoring with a fantastic volley from Srdjan Plavsic with 28 minutes played.

Midfielder Plavsic then doubled the lead in the 66th minute with a goal of his own which went in via a deflection.

They still needed another goal to secure a safe passage, but with exactly 15 minutes of regulation time remaining, Praha suffered a heartbreak when they conceded a penalty.

Subotica’s Bojan CeCaric made no mistake from the spot and that signalled the end of the road for Nhamoinesu and his teammates.

Spartak Subotica, who progressed to the next round of the qualifiers, are not the sort of club with a great history in Europe. Their only previous entry at the competition was back in 2010/11 and they started off at the second stage before losing to Dnipro in the third round.

Interestingly, the Serbs were leading the tie 2-1 from the first leg before losing 2-0 in Ukraine. Last season, Subotica finished fourth in the Serbian Superliga and thus got direct entry to the second round of the qualifiers. They started off alright by beating Northern Ireland club Coleraine 3-1 on aggregate.

But Sparta Prague are a club with plenty of experience in Europa League and they made it to the first knockout round in 2016/17. They didn’t manage to qualify for the group stage last season, with their first qualifying fixture tipped against a strong Red Star Belgrade.

Tembo lands Matsatsantsa job

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWEAN coach Kaitano Tembo has described his appointment to the top SuperSport United job as humbling and pledged to take the South African Premiership side into “a new era’’.

After spending nearly 20 years at the club that he also played for, the former Zimbabwe international was yesterday handed the reins to lead the side with the ex-Warriors vice-captain being given a two-year contract and ending a seven-month stint as caretaker coach.

The club made an official announcement on their Twitter handle.

Tembo, who has worked most of his coaching career at SuperSport after ending his playing career at the same side, was naturally excited at being installed the substantive coach, vowing to live up to the task and turn around a team that almost faced relegation after a turbulent second half of the season.

The 47-year-old’s appointment was confirmed on the eve of the start of the 2018/19 ABSA Premiership season which SuperSport will start with a cagey away assignment against Cape Town City today.

Tembo, however, told The Herald that he was ready for the challenge of being head coach, a task he has often performed on caretaker stints at the club.

“I think for me the first thing is to thank the chairman, the board, the CEO and the club at large for the opportunity they have given me.

“I feel very humbled for being given the chance to take the club to a new era after a shaky period last season and for them to believe that I am the one to take the club further is humbling.

“It’s not an easy job, it’s a tough job, but I am ready to face the challenges that will come ahead’’.

Tembo said he would not read too much into the period of his contract, insisting it is the performance of his side that would matter the most.

“I have got a two-year contract, but in football what is important is what you do, people should be happy with the results and I am happy with the support I have been receiving from the players, support staff and everyone at the club.

“This appointment helps in my development as a coach. I have been a juniors coach, an assistant coach, a caretaker coach and everything has a time and this is my time to be head coach and I will give it my utmost best.

“This club has been the centre of my life for almost 20 years,’’ Tembo said. The former Dynamos centreback also joins a long list of Zimbabweans who have coached in the South African top-flight league, following in the footsteps of the likes of legendary goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, who also once had a stint with SuperSport United, Shepherd Murape, Sunday Chidzambwa, Peter Nyama, Roy Barreto, Ian Gorowa and Wilfred Mugeyi.

Tembo also revealed that he was content with the squad he has at his disposal and was likely to make just a few additions with particular emphasis being placed on getting a good centreback.

SuperSport had initially targeted FC Platinum’s Kelvin Moyo, but they do not seem to have pursued the defender.

“Though we lost some players we have a good balance of youth and experience. A lot of youngsters are pushing for places in the team and we have some experienced guys who are ready to lead the way.

“We lost two centrebacks and only got one so we are still looking for another centreback, but we have done our pre-season which was thorough and a good pre-season is always important for any team.

“The window period is still open until the end of August’’.

Tembo said he was also happy with his backroom staff which he described as a group that is capable and “who challenge me which is healthy’’.

His backroom staff includes former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Andre Arendse and video analyst Paul Mathews, who also doubles as team manager.

“I won’t tinker with the backroom staff and I am also happy with the squad I have been working with in the last seven months, they have shown discipline, commitment to the club badge and a willingness to learn and do more.

“All the PSL games are now difficult, but we have prepared for tomorrow’s match as much as we can in order to put on a performance that will help us get the desired result,’’ Tembo said.

Tembo lost just one Absa Premiership match from the seven he took charge of following the resignation of Tinkler earlier this year. He also had previously worked closely with Pitso Mosimane before he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns, and Stuart Baxter before the Englishman left to take over the Bafana Bafana job. Tembo was briefly installed the caretaker coach prior to Tinkler’s arrival.

SuperSport United chief executive officer Stanley Mathews said he was delighted to appoint Tembo in the position of head coach for his unwavering loyalty to the club.

The club had given their biggest hint that they had settled for Tembo when Matthews this week recognised the coach and the team for their efforts last season and presenting awards to the outstanding individuals.

Tembo was given the CEO’s award while Aubrey Modiba and skipper Dean Furman also walked away with prizes.

“Kaitano epitomises what it means to be a club man. He joined us as a player 19 years ago and has worked his way through our youth structures and subsequently into the first team as an assistant.

“He has steered us on a caretaker basis on three separate occasions and everyone at the club is committed to reciprocating his loyalty and his desire to win silverware,” said Matthews.

Club chairperson Khulu Sibiya said the leadership will rally behind the Zimbabwean coach to make sure he succeeds in his set goals.

“It’s a great challenge for Kaitano because he knows we have high standards at the club. We will all rally behind him to deliver success because above all it’s a team effort,” said Sibiya.

TOUGH GUY KAITANO’S TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH TALE IS JUST AMAZING

$

A LESSER mortal would have been consumed by a personal tragedy so horrific, when it struck at the turn of the millennium, it was so devastating its consequences were as grim as they can ever come.

He was only 30 back then and certainly not old, clearly not wise and probably not emotionally strong enough to deal with a tragedy of such grand proportions.

One minute everything had been going according to script, life was good, the young family was intact and happy and they were traveling back to their base in South Africa carrying great memories of their visit back home.

Their trip had taken them to Kadoma, his hometown, where he had met some old friends and members of his extended family and now he was driving back to work at his base in Pretoria, South Africa.

His wife Monica sat opposite to him, on the front passenger seat, the one she had occupied since they left their Pretoria apartment on this journey back to their roots to reconnect with the people who helped make them the celebrity football couple that they had become then.

His little daughter sat on one of the back seats, where his younger brother provided her with company, occasionally blowing some jokes to entertain her, on this long road trip back to their South African base.

They had covered a big chunk of the trip, left Masvingo in the distance, and were now on their way to Beitbridge for the passage into South Africa, the country where this young family was now earning a living.

Then, just like that, everything changed.

And where there had been light, there was now a lot of darkness, where there had been beauty, there was now a lot of ugliness, where there had been hope, there was now a lot of hopelessness and where there had been life there was lifelessness.

By the time it was over, with the car having overturned and landed on its side after veering off a road which some have described as a death trap, his lovely wife Monica was dead.

He had somehow escaped with his life, but with a broken arm and his daughter, too, was still alive, but in pain while his brother had also escaped from the horror with just injuries which, with the passage of time, would heal.

His daughter and brother were rushed to Mwenezi Hospital while he began the difficult and painful exercise of trying to deal with the physical and psychological demons which were devouring his soul.

Those who have lost a dear loved one, and I am one of them, know exactly how difficult, if not impossible, this exercise is where you are bombarded with so many questions which you can barely answer and which you can barely comprehend.

For Kaitano Tembo, this was his make-or-break moment where his future would be defined, where the future of his innocent little daughter would be defined and where the future of his extended family would be defined.

It’s either he would let the enormity of the tragedy consume him, and in the process destroy his future, and that of those who depended on him, or he would find the strength to rise from all this and find a path back into the light.

He knew he needed God’s grace to help him find a way out of these ruins, God’s strength to help him find a way out of this tragedy and God’s guidance to help him find a way out of this darkness.

There were days, in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, when he doubted himself, doubted his strength, which had been a remarkable feature of his identity as a no-nonsense defender, and doubted his will to soldier on.

Not without his Monica, the woman he had chosen to be his life companion, the one whose shoulders usually provided a cushion for him to lean on in difficult times and the one who had given him his lovely daughter.

But he reminded himself of who he was, Kaitano Tembo, the tough one whom they had even nicknamed Ngwenya at Dynamos, with the Glamour Boys fans finding a resemblance between him, in terms of their no-holds-barred approach, and the immortal Shadreck Ngwenya.

Reminded himself of who he used to be, long before he arrived at Dynamos from Kadoma, a tough guy who had grown up in the tough neighbourhood of Rimuka, where nothing was given and everything was earned.

Where real boys never gave up, no matter the circumstances, where they were taught at a very early age that there were no freebies in this world and you have to earn everything through sweat and blood.

I should know because this is where I spent some of my primary school holidays, at House Number 35 Nzou Street in the heart of Rimuka, a stone’s throw from the stadium and not far from Rumwe shopping centre.

A street behind the big house where Clive Kanyemba raised a family that would give our football a fine forward called Cypren, who went on to play for Highlanders only for him to die young before fulfilling the talent he had in abundance.

My uncle, Mudhara Zulu, was also a football coach of note in Kadoma, who coached Kaitano during his early days, and his house in Rimuka used to provide me with refuge for my vacation on the days I chose not spending my holidays at home in Chakari.

Because of that I came to know the area well, came to know fine footballers like Partson Muzhuzha and Winter Moon, boys from the hood who were so good I will bet my last dollar that had they played in today’s football, where a lot of mediocrity resides, they would have become stars of the Warriors.

And I also came to know the people of that area well, that they don’t quit easily, and I wasn’t surprised to learn that Kaitano Tembo chose defiance, when faced with tragedy, and willed himself to fight on to defy the odds and give his daughter a chance in life.

Yesterday, after years of toiling in the trenches of SuperSport United, a club he has served with both distinction and loyalty for 20 years now, Kaitano was rewarded for his contribution to their cause by being named head coach of the side.

It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

THE MAN WHO HONOURED  HIS DEPARTED WIFE

Four years after the fatal crash that claimed his wife and left his daughter and brother in hospital, while keeping him out of action for four months as he nursed a broken arm, Kaitano arrived in Tunisia as part of a special group of Warriors.

They were the pioneering group of Warriors to plunge into the battles of the AFCON finals — something which a generation of some of our greatest players had failed to do in their careers.

Moses Chunga, who — like Muhammad Ali before him — finds romance in calling himself the greatest of them all, among the footballers to emerge from this country, never played at the AFCON finals.

And he isn’t alone in that category.

Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa, Stanley Ndunduma, as excellent a player and consistent a performer in the Warriors colours, Ephraim Chawanda, so formidable we called him the ‘Rock of Gibraltar,’ Madinda Ndlovu, Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo it even Joel Shambo never made it that far.

Neither did Vitalis Takawira and Tauya Murewa, John Phiri and Onias Musana, Jonah Murewa and Joseph Machingura, Ephert Lungu and Ephraim Dzimbiri, Joseph Zulu and Henry McKop to name, but a few of real stars of our game.

But Kaitano and his Class of 2004 did it, with the boy from Kadoma arriving in Tunisia with the added responsibility of being the vice-captain of the team that was led by the greatest Warrior of all time — Peter Ndlovu.

Somehow, in four short years, he had found a way to defy the tragedy that had struck him that day when the horror crash took away his wife to assume the responsibility of being the second in command of his national team in its first maiden dance at the AFCON finals.

Now, that’s character.

And in a world full of boys who want to pretend as if they are men and, in a world looking for role models who provide inspirational stories to help us find ways out of the darkness, he had provided us with a shining example.

The Americans have found a way to create their heroes, through the power of movies, who inspire their kids to defy the odds and to reject being swallowed by challenges.

One of such heroes is Rambo, the action hero, who is an army on his own, with his powerful muscles and intoxicating courage he finds a way to always beat the odds.

And while Rambo might be a fictitious character, Kaitano is a real character and the way he refused to be choked by tragedy and rose to fight again, both for club and country, is simply  sensational.

Remarkably, what impressed me the most was that, even in his finest hour, as he became one of the 11 immortals who first played for the Warriors in an AFCON finals match in 2004, he never forgot someone who mattered so much to him, but who was no longer there to support him.

“My wife meant a lot to me, she really supported me during difficult times and dedicating the tournament to her is the only way I can thank her for what she did,”he told Steve Vickers who was then working for BBC Sport.

“It was difficult, but a lot of people supported me and I was able to pull through.

“It made me a stronger person as I had to look after our daughter and as football is my career, I couldn’t give up.”

What he didn’t tell Stevie is that they are not made to give up in the tough environment of Kadoma and it’s something I know very well.

After all, Kaitano is my age, we both 48, the generation that was born when the World Cup was televised, for the first time in its history, in colour.

Maybe, on second thoughts, that is why the Lord made sure the majority of us, those who came into this world in 1970, had to have dark features and the arrival of colour television would help parade us in better light on the occasions our images were broadcast to the world.

For Kaitano was the original ‘Munhu Mutema’, long before William Mapfumo, who also went on to play for Shabanie, came along.

And he played for a great DeMbare side, winning three league championships in the four seasons he was at the club, in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

I have always argued that the team they had in 1995 was way better than the one they had in 1998 and had they not self-destructed in that loss to Express of Uganda in the quarter-finals, after having won the first leg in Kampala 1-0, they would probably have gone all the way to become African champions.

Kaitano was part of that crew and he was very good, a consistent performer throughout the 132 games he played for the Glamour Boys, scoring six goals along the way, including one in an unforgettable Harare Derby in 1996 that ended 1-1 at Rufaro.

Mphumelelo Dzowa scored the other goal, a booming free-kick that was marked goal from the moment it left his right boot, in one of the great games of the era of the modern Premiership with the point virtually ending the championship dreams of the Glamour Boys.

Kaitano was a fiery competitor and, back in the days when the Harare Derby had more substance and quality than the garbage that we have come to see in recent years, he took no prisoners although some will say he, at times, went overboard.

His season-ending tackle on Alois Bunjira that shattered a campaign in which he was poised to become the Soccer Star of the Year back in 1996, was more of an assault likely to cause grievous bodily harm than just an acceptable football foul.

But away from the football field he was a dove, a good man, which is more important than being a good footballer, and those who have had the privilege of interacting with him will testify that they don’t make them — in terms of gentleness — like this anymore these days.

IT’S GREAT TO SEE GOOD THINGS COMING TO GOOD GUYS

Life is never fair and it’s not always a case that good things come to good guys, the people who deserve the rewards that should come to such fine specimen.

Think about Benjamin Nkonjera, the guy we called Makanaky, a diminutive frame that had the heart of a tiger, as good a midfield terrier as any that will ever roam the engine room of our Warriors.

The one whose name Reinhard Fabisch always scripted first on the team sheet of the Dream Team, the one the German coach trusted to deliver, in a star-studded side, than anyone else.

The one whose beaming smile, all the time, always cast a beautiful light on the Dream Team, even on the occasions when they were against the ropes, and the opposition were in control of the game.

And the one who made such an enduring impact on King Peter’s life that the Flying Elephant ended up naming his son Benjamin in honour of this football genius.

But, as fate would have it, Benji was the one who had to die young, the one we lost to the heavens when he still had so much to offer to our football, the one whose death cast a huge shadow on our football, in particular, and our country, in general.

But, at times, life can reward those who deserve such rewards and, yesterday, one such person who has always deserved to be rewarded, Kaitano Tembo, got his dues with SuperSport United announcing his appointment as their new head coach.

Kaitano was 29 when he arrived at SuperSport United as a player, years were still identified from the word one (1999) and not two, as has been the case since the turn of the millennium, and he has spent his last two decades at the club.

A fiercely loyal individual, Kaitano rejected a number of clubs who have tried, over the course of the last two decades, to take him away from SuperSport United form whom, as a player, he clocked 149 appearances and even scored six goals.

Even when others were suggesting he was being given a raw deal by the club, who kept overlooking him for the top job, Kaitano didn’t see it that way but, instead, suggested he was still a rookie who had a lot to learn.

Now and again, on the occasions you asked him why he was hanging on at a club that appeared to believe he was only good enough for the juniors, Kaitano would tell you that everything has its time in football, just like in life.

And, just like those who support Black Leopards Football Club of South Africa, whose motto is “Lidoda Dhuva,” he firmly believed, just like the meaning of that motto, his day would one day come.

Yesterday, that day finally came and, if you ask me, it could not have happened to a better guy who was a fine footballer but, more importantly, remains a very good man.

There are some who believe he is a future national team coach in the making but that’s a subject for another day because he has to pass this tough test first. But what a remarkable story this has been for this man, a journey which saw him deal with horrific tragedy that would have destroyed the lives of many people, but from which he found a way to rise, like a phoenix, into this superman.

If you want an get amazing tale to inspire you, if you want to believe odds can be conquered, if you want someone to show you mountains can be moved and if you are feeling down, and probably out, take some time to use Kaitano as an example.

The boy from Kadoma who lost his wife in a horrific car crash, almost lost his life, almost lost his little daughter and almost lost his brother in that accident but rose from it all to become a coach of one of South Africa’s top clubs.

SuperSport United of South Africa have appointed club legend Kaitano Tembo as head coach on a two-year contract with immediate effect.

TimesLive/Kevin Mapasure

Kaitano
Tembo

The former Zimbabwean international defender was named caretaker-coach in March when the club parted ways with Eric Tinkler following a spell of unsatisfactory results and he guided them to a seventh spot finish in the league.

Tembo was in charge of the team’s preseason preparations over the past few weeks and his first task as full-time coach of the club is a tricky away league clash against Cape Town City in the Mother City on Saturday.

“This Club has been the centre of my life for almost 20 years and I and my players will give everything we have to keep our run of success going‚” Tembo‚ who has also captained United, said.

“I am honoured by the confidence the club have shown in me by giving me this great opportunity.”

United chief executive Stan Matthews said: “Kaitano epitomises what it means to be a clubman. He joined us as a player 19 years ago and has worked his way through our youth structures and subsequently into the first team as an assistant.
“He has steered us on a caretaker basis on three separate occasions and everyone at the club is committed to reciprocating his loyalty and his desire to win silverware.”

SuperSport chairperson Khulu Sibiya said: “It’s a great challenge for Kaitano because he knows we have high standards at the club. We will all rally behind him to deliver success because, above all, it’s a team effort.”

Tembo joins a long list of Zimbabwean coaches to have worked as managers in South Africa, with top names such as Roy Baretto (Orlando Pirates), Peter Nyama (QwaQwa Stars), Shepherd Murape (Orlando Pirates), Wildfred Mugeyi (AmaZulu), Ian Gorowa (Ajax Cape Town, Moroka Swallows), Sunday Chidzambga (Black Leopards) as well as Joey Antipas, who had a season’s stint with AmaZulu, coming to mind.

Baretto and Murape are the two most successful Zimbabwean coaches in South Africa, where they each won the league title with Orlando Pirates.

Nyama won a knockout competition with QwaQwa Stars, now Free State Stars, which was a huge achievement for the club at the time.

Tembo will be looking to accomplish such success at a club that he has been loyal to for a long period of time, from playing days to the time he was drafted into the technical team.

The former Dynamos defender knows competition will be tough against teams such as Kaizer Chiefs, current champions Sundowns as well as Orlando Pirates.

Another mid-table finish will not be good enough for Tembo as the club seeks honours this time around.

His appointment could also open opportunities for more Zimbabwean players to join the South African top club where he has since off-loaded Kingston Nkatha, while he is also sending Prince Dube out on loan so that he gets more game time and develop into a finished product.

Tembo signed former Dynamos goalkeeper Washington Arubi, who has been plying his trade in the second tier league in that country.

Arubi joins Onesimo Bhasera, who is a mainstay at the club.

ZOC hails Youth Games team

THE Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (Zoc) has hailed the splendid performance by team Zimbabwe at the 3rd African Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria held from July 18 to 28.

BY GARISH PHIRI

Zimbabwe managed to scoop 10 medals, having travelled with a group that comprised of 37 athletes from seven sport codes, including a five-a-side hockey team.

Rowing collected five medals and attained two slots for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be held in Argentina. The girls hockey team, who won a bronze medal, also earned a slot as one of three African representatives at the YOG in October 2018.

Zimbabwe were placed 17 out of 54 countries at the Games.

Zoc chief executive officer, Anna Mguni, was pleased with the fighting spirit displayed by the team despite the odds staked against them.

“It is important to take into consideration the relatively small size of the team compared to other nations. For many of the athletes the experience was entirely new and different, with physical and mental conditions out of their normal comfort zones. The athletes adjusted to the changes and like other nations experiencing the challenges of heat, humidity, language barriers and different living environments, they undertook their tour of duty well,” she said.

The next Africa Youth Games will be held in Maseru, Lesotho in 2022 and ZOC is already looking ahead.

Zimbabwe is expected to field a set of strong young athletes in preparation for the next similar event.

“We look forward to preparing and participating in more sport codes. Preparations need to begin now through the science based identification and nurturing of athletes who will be in the 16 to 18 age group in 2022.

“Exposure to elite competition is critical for the athletes between now and 2022, beginning from a low level and increasing in frequency and intensity as the event draws closer. In addition, it is hoped that the games will have a wider range of qualification event for the next Youth Olympic Games,” Mguni said.

Sables aim to break Namibia jinx

ZIMBABWE’S senior national rugby team will be hoping to finally end a 17-year winless jinx against their perennial nemesis Namibia in Test rugby when the two sides clash in the penultimate round of the Rugby Africa Gold Cup at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo today.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

Zimbabwe Sables posing for a picture

The Sables’ last win over the Namibians came in July 2001 when they beat the Welwitschias 27-26 in a then Africa Cup encounter at the same venue.

Now 17 years since that famous triumph, the current squad will be hoping to atone for what has been a disappointing 2019 Rugby World Cup qualification campaign by upstaging an inform Namibian side which is unbeaten in the Gold Cup campaign and on course to qualify for next year’s global showpiece.

The Sables, on the other hand, are almost out of contention for a place at next year’s World Cup after two losses and a draw in their opening three matches and will instead have their sights on remaining in the top tier of African rugby.

In fact, the Peter de Villiers-coached side head into their last two matches needing a win either against the Namibians today or Uganda on August 18 in Kampala requiring at least one victory to stay in the Rugby Africa Gold Cup.

Sables captain Denford Mutamangira yesterday said although the Namibians were overwhelming favourites on paper going into today’s game, they are nonetheless not invincible.

“Playing Namibia is always the biggest game for us at the Gold Cup and I believe they are probably the favourites in this tournament but whenever we play them it is always a close game,” Mutamangira said.

“There are a few times that they have beaten us with a wide margin but the scoreboard does not reflect the game itself. We always play well against them and I think for us this year, this is a big game for us. We are really looking forward to our first win in the competition. As much as they are Namibia, we also want to go out there and win this game.”

The last time the two sides met in Windhoek, Namibia last year the Sables let slip a 23-7 lead to lose the game 31-26. In total the Sables have only beaten Namibia three times in 31 matches.

“They are the favourites but it doesn’t stop us from going out there and playing our game and beating them. We also want to go out there and win that game. We have to stay focused and concentrate for 80 minutes. We can’t afford to lose concentration and we need to pay attention to every little thing to make sure that we go all the way,” Mutamangira said.

Sables coach de Villiers, who is under pressure to finally register his first win as Zimbabwe’s coach, has rung changes to the side.

In the forwards department, talented flank Connor Pritchard reclaims his place in the starting lineup after missing the last match against Tunisia due to his participating at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco, United States.

Wingers Tafadzwa Chitokwindo and Shayne Makombe, who were also part of the Cheetahs’ World Cup squad start for the first time for the Sables, this season.

Scrumhalf Hilton Mudariki also makes a welcome return after missing the last two games due to club commitments in the UK, where he recently signed for RFU Championship side Jersey Reds.

The Sables also made a bold tactical change after moving former Zimbabwe youth international Brandon Mandivenga from centre to flyhalf and dropping the regular number 10 Lenience Tambwera to the replacements bench.

Sables Starting XV

1. Denford Mutamangira, 2.David Makanda, 3. Farai Mudariki, 4. Brian Nyaude, 5. Fortunate Chipendu, 6. Takudzwa Mandiwanza, 7. Connor Pritchard, 8. Tapfuma Parirenyatwa, 9. Hilton Mudariki, 10. Future lies in developing young players — Streak

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE cricket legend Heath Streak yesterday said the future of international cricket lies in developing young players as he unveiled the 2018 edition of the Splash President’s Afro-Asia Cup currently underway at Old Hararians. The Under-14 cricket tournament, which started in 2015 as the Africa Cup, has been growing in leaps and bounds and this year it has attracted teams from beyond the continent by bringing in the India academy side.

South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia are also taking part in the tournament that has been dubbed “Zimbabwe’s youth IPL”.

The tournament is the brainchild of the former Zimbabwe captain and coach, through his Heath Streak International Trust.
Organisers announced that the event is held this year in honour of President Mnangagwa.

Streak, who is known for his passion for development, said the tournament is a platform for youth cricketers to grow their talents and to prepare them for the big stage.

“We started in 2015 as an Africa Cup. We won it. Our kids need to develop by getting the opportunity to play different academies from different countries.

“So we began with African countries and the popularity is growing so much that we started getting inquiries from people outside of Africa like the Indian Academy that has joined us this year.

“It’s great for our boys and for them to get the exposure against people from different cultures and different countries it’s great for their evolution and development of their game.

“It’s an opportunity to see how we are doing in comparison to other academies in other countries for example South Africa which is a very successful cricketing nation. So when you play them it is a good barometer to see where we are at.

“Teams like Namibia and Tanzania are emerging countries in the cricketing world and it’s great for them to get to tour around the world, which they probably don’t do much of, and to see cricket outside their own backyard.
‘‘I think it’s a great tournament to get exposure at various levels,” said Streak.

The tournament kicked off at the weekend with four games being played every day.
The top two teams at the end of the round robin clashes will meet in the final tomorrow.

Tournament sponsors Splash Paints pledged to continue supporting youth cricket tournament when they unveiled the trophy yesterday.

The chief executive and partner of the Heath Streak International Cricket Trust, Joseph Rego, said the President’s Afro-Asia Cricket Cup has the potential to turn into an Under-14 Cricket World Cup in future.

LIVERPOOL. – With the Thursday deadline for the English Premiership soccer transfer window fast approaching, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted that the Reds have not yet finalised their business.

Liverpool have already added Naby Keita, Fabinho, Isaac Christie-Davies, Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri to their ranks during this off-season.

The Reds have also offloaded 16 players, but Klopp confirmed that there may be more departures and/or additional arrivals. “We will see what happens,” Klopp said on the subject of potential last-minute transfers after beating Napoli 5-0 in Dublin, according to Sky Sports News.

“Yes,” he replied when asked whether he expected more business in or out of his club.
“I cannot kill your D-day (Sky Sports Deadline Day) show, people sit there in front of the television all day waiting,” he added.

“If any player from my team is available, then in every other situation in my life as a manager I would have bought all of them, to be honest.

“They are all fantastic boys, they are able to play fantastic football.”
The Reds will kick off their Premier League season against West Ham United on August 12.

Cephas Chimedza hails Mutizwa’s wonder goal

Grace Chingoma Senior Sports Reporter
FORMER Zimbabwe international Cephas Chimedza has praised Knox Mutizwa after the striker scored a spectacular overhead goal for Golden Arrows on the opening weekend of the South African Premiership on Sunday. Mutizwa was on target in the 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United in a KwaZulu Natal derby with his goal being touted as a contender for the Goal of the Season.

The striker took the ball on his chest and with his back on goal, leapt into the air to connect the ball with a spectacular bicycle kick.

The goal reminded fans of Cristiano Ronaldo’s super strike for Real Madrid against Juventus in a UEFA Champions League match in Turin, Italy in April.

The goal triggered a flood of praises on social media with Belgium-based Chimedza posting the video clip of the goal on his Facebook page and asking his friends and followers to share the phenomenal goal.

“Team Zimbabwe. Well done Knox. You too, can share the video and people will also go crazy. Messi (Lionel) wonder goals are talked about because many people would have watched them,” he commented on the video.
Former Motor Action midfielder Douglas Zimbango also commented, “This boy can really go far”.

Another fan Prosper Furayi weighed in, “Wonderful Knox aaaaaaa beautiful, well taken. That’s chilling accuracy and military precision. Good one keep up the brilliance,” he wrote.

Other social media users George Oscar and Anesu Karimbika remarked that the striker could have scored a goal of the season on the opening day of the league.

Meanwhile, Talent Chawapihwa has done enough in his first season in South Africa to force a move from modest side Baroka FC to a bigger club before the close of the window at the end of this month .

Baroka are desperately trying to hold on to the Zimbabwean and have asked for anything between R3 million to R5 million before they can entertain any suitors.

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits have all been linked with the 26-year-old. Chawapihwa joined Baroka last season on a three-year contract and has adjusted quickly to life in the league.

Although he has not been on target many times, his stock has continued to rise with his pace and flair proving a nightmare to many defences.

Baroka FC chief executive, Morgan Mammila, said Chawapihwa was their prized asset and they were not prepared to go into negotiations with any club for a fee that is below $3 million.

But with some weeks before the close of the window, South Africa’s Kick-Off Magazine hinted in their latest edition that it may not be surprising if one of the giants come knocking on their door.

“When asked about the value of his star player Talent Chawapihwa, Baroka CEO Morgan Mammila did not mince his words: ‘We are talking between R3-R5million.’

“The figures might seem astronomical to many, but considering the player’s talent, it won’t be surprising to see a PSL giant willingly open the chequebook for his services . . .

“In just one season in the PSL, Chawapihwa managed to make his mark, attracting interest from some of the big clubs in the league following his sparkling displays for his Limpopo club.”

Chawapihwa’s side opened their PSL campaign with a 1-0 defeat to AmaZulu on Saturday.
The ABSA opening weekend featured a number of Zimbabweans with former Warriors goalie and veteran keeper Tapuwa Kapini bouncing back into top-flight after captaining Highlands Park to promotion.

Although Kapini conceded a goal against Kuda Mahachi’s Orlando Pirates, the Lions of the North were able to force a 1-1 draw against the Soweto giants.

The former Highlanders goalkeeper told Kick-Off that it will take some time to adjust to the league again.
“I think if you look at it, National First Division and PSL is a totally different ball-game. If you’re in the NFD, it’s difficult to play there.

“When you come to the PSL, I think, if we can put the effort that we put in the NFD then we’ll be a team to be reckoned with.
“If you look at it, how many records did we break last season? I think it will come right, game after game and the team will start to gel. And it feels good to be back in the PSL,” said Kapini.

Mahachi, playing his first match in Pirates colours following his move from Golden Arrows, came in as a second half substitute.

Former Ngezi Platinum forward Terrence Dzvukamanja also started for Bidvest Wits who beat Free State Stars 3-0, but had to be replaced in the second half after he got injured.

Warriors fringe player Jimmy Dzingai had a memorable game for Power Dynamos against Lumwana Radiants when he scored a brace in the 3-0 win.

Dzingai scored both goals via headers in the third and 48th minutes.
However, the former Yadah skipper was substituted soon after scoring his second goal after he suffered a mild concussion.
His club Power Dynamos are now fourth in the Zambian Super League after 11 games.

Battle of Zim postponed, again

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
HARARE giants Dynamos say they will not be tempted to sit on their laurels after their long-awaited clash against Highlanders was postponed by the Premier Soccer League for the third time inside three weeks. The giants will be conspicuous by their absence when the league programme returns this week after a two-week pause to pave way for the harmonised elections which were held across the country last Monday.

The league authorities announced, without giving reasons, that the game that was scheduled for Barbourfields this Sunday will not be played as scheduled.

PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare said they acted on a directive from their superiors.
“The match was cancelled for logistical reasons. I cannot comment further than that,” she said.
PSL last week postponed all the league matches following the violent incidents that rocked the post-election period in Harare.

The league had also shelved matches the previous week.
Dynamos team manager Richard Chihoro said the Glamour Boys will not be tempted to change their focus.
“We haven’t heard about it (the postponement) yet. We have been preparing for this game for the past two weeks now and considering where we are coming from, I think this is a game that we need to win at all costs.

“Just like we said last week, we are ready for this game. We wanted it, but then there is nothing we can do when the authorities have said it’s off again.

“We don’t know the reasons yet, but we believe whatever led to the postponement of this game is important.
“So we respect the decision, but we will continue with our preparations. Surely, we will not sit on our laurels. Highlanders are usually not easy customers,” said Chihoro.

However, the rest of the Premiership matches return on Friday when Harare City host bottom-of-the-table side Mutare City at Rufaro with giants CAPS United entertaining Black Rhinos the following day at the same venue.
In fact, Rufaro will host three matches at the weekend and Yadah and Herentals have a date on Sunday.

Champions FC Platinum will be away to Bulawayo City at Barbourfields on Saturday while Ngezi Platinum host Nichrut at Baobab.

The postponement of the big match could be a blessing in disguise for the Glamour Boys who are still sweating over key defender and vice-captain Marshal Machazane who is nursing a groin injury.

Another defender Blessing Moyo was also under surveillance from the medical team while new signing Kingston Nkhata remains a huge doubt as his transfer documents are still to be finalised.

DeMbare are currently 13th on the log standings with 22 points from 20 starts.
Highlanders are currently on a rebuilding exercise and are fourth with 35 points from 20 games.

They have brought on board former How Mine forward Tinashe Makanda who was with South Africa First Division side Stellenbosch, Tafadzwa Sibanda from Southern Region Division One side TelOne and Denzel Khumalo from Bosso 90.

CAS ghost could decide PSL race

Sports Reporter
A YEAR after the Premier Soccer League was split into two distinct camps with their differences triggered by the decision of ad hoc leaders to splash an initial $17 000 to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the ghost of that spectacular and damaging fallout appears to have returned to their boardrooms.

And it could shape the destiny of the battle for the leadership of the country’s top-flight football league expected to be between CAPS United president Farai Jere and Triangle United chairman Lovemore Matikinyidze.

The ZIFA Electoral Committee is expected to reveal tomorrow that the duo will battle for the right to lead the PSL with the winner of the race getting a four-year mandate to become the boss of the country’s top-flight league which has struggled to provide real value to its membership.

The PSL is seeking a fresh start after years in which it has been trapped in a quagmire, crippled by falling attendance figures, a significant chunk of its membership struggling to just survive amid rising costs and dwindling incomes and rebellion within its ranks over the way its leadership has adopted a hardline approach to managing the league.

In June this year, two club bosses — Walter Magaya of Yadah Stars and Nicholas Gora of Nichrut — raised the red flag over what they alleged to be ill-treatment from the league’s management with the former revealing he was withdrawing his funding of the club while the latter was unhappy with the hefty fine which had been imposed on his team.

“Ndaneta, this PSL inorwadza, I am telling you,” Magaya said after appeals to have his club’s match postponed, when he lost a third player to national team commitments, were turned down by the PSL management.

“They make money out of us every season and when you ask them to be considerate to your plight they make some funny decisions which impact negatively on the development of clubs and football.

“What type of governing is that? What type of organisation is that? I don’t get any money from sponsoring the team, instead I spend a lot of money, but it feels like there are some people in leadership positions who don’t want to see people like us in the game.

“Last year, they said we were celebrating 25 years of the PSL, but did you see any billboard in any town celebrating the players and coaches who helped make the league what it is, of course, there was nothing and you say we are progressing as a league.

“There is zero benefit in sponsoring local football and all that we have seen are people who used to be rich and powerful going down because of their passion for the game.”

Gora raised the red flag over a $4 000 fine imposed on his club for the disturbances that rocked their league match against CAPS United at Ascot.

But it is the ghost of the spectacular fallout, which split the Premier Soccer League into two distinct camps two years ago, over the CAS case that could prove decisive in the battle for the PSL chairmanship.

Matikinyidze, supported by his ally Chicken Inn chairman Lifa Ncube, defiantly pushed for the PSL dispute with ZIFA over relegation and promotion to be taken to CAS in Switzerland with the league supposed to pay an initial $17 000 for their case to be heard.

The duo authorised the payment of the money to Credit Suisse, a Swiss bank based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“As you are aware, our dispute with ZIFA is now pending before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.
“We write to advise that CAS have requested that each party pays an amount of $17 000 being costs for the arbitration proceedings,” a letter from the PSL to clubs read.

“We attach hereto the letter from CAS for your information. We are, therefore, seeking your approval to pay the amount required by CAS. This amount must be paid by the 12th of January, 2017.

“Find attached, hereto, a consent form for your signature if you are agreeable to the PSL paying the amount as directed by CAS.”

Jere opposed the move, arguing it was just a waste of resources which the league didn’t have and the money should be invested in projects that help the membership of the top-flight league instead, including even helping the teams that were representing the league and country, in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Two months later, in January last year, the bid by the rebellious group at the PSL to take their fight to CAS was crushed by the top-flight clubs, led by heavyweights Dynamos, Highlanders, CAPS United and FC Platinum, who forced their ad hoc leaders to withdraw the case from CAS.

The PSL clubs, through their lawyers Coghlan, Welsh and Guest, officially advised CAS they were withdrawing their case.
“We, the undersigned Governors of the PSL: (a) lawfully congregated in Congress in accordance with the PSL statutes, and
(b) by lawful authority representing the following PSL members — Border Strikers, Bulawayo City, CAPS United, Chapungu, Dynamos, FC Platinum, Harare City, Highlanders, How Mine, Hwange, Mutare City, Ngezi Platinum Stars, Triangle, Tsholotsho and ZPC Kariba

“That, pursuant to our resolution of the 19th November, 2016, we shall all and each proceed post-haste to formally withdraw the case CAS 2016 /0 /4873 PSL and All versus Zimbabwe Football Association from the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

This was a slap in the face of the rebels amid concern among the clubs that the three-man emergency committee running the league, of which Matikinyidze and Ncube were members, had turned dictatorial rather than get direction, in such cases, from the league’s membership.

Matikinyidze had also extended PSL chief executive Kenny Ndebele’s contract without the case being debated by the entire membership of the PSL.

Blow for Chiyangwa

ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa’s sidekick and Beach Soccer Zimbabwe vice-president, Marshal Jonga, has been suspended, and could be ineligible to contest the organisation’s elections set for tomorrow, where he is eyeing the chairmanship.

BY HENRY MHARA

Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa

Jonga, who holds a top position at Pinnacle Holdings, a company owned by the Zifa president, is up against incumbent chairman Joseph Musariri for the top post.

However, his ambitions could be derailed after the Beach Soccer board slapped him with a suspension for a litany of accusations, including trying to rig the election by recruiting his friends and colleagues to make up the electoral college.

This development could be a huge blow to Chiyangwa, who would have hoped for his close associate Jonga to get the chairman’s position, which would guarantee him a vote in the Zifa presidential election coming up this December.

In a letter dated August 4, and signed by Musariri, Beach Soccer Zimbabwe said the decision to suspend Jonga was reached at a board meeting on July 27.

“Your suspension, which is in terms of the Beach Soccer Zimbabwe constitution article 40 (5) and is with immediate effect, is on account of the following; communicating with Zifa without authority, providing malicious information to the print media about beach soccer leadership, misappropriation of beach soccer funds by beach soccer chairman and misrepresentation of the length of your football background.”

Jonga is also accused of authorising the use of the beach soccer pitch at the Zifa Village without board approval, trying to stop the normal functioning of the beach soccer board, and thereby bringing the sport of beach soccer into disrepute.

The board also claims that they discovered serious irregularities in the setting up of the electoral college — the people who will vote in the election, accusing Jonga of handpicking his close associates, colleagues, friends and workmates in setting up the committee.

“A detailed charge sheet will follow soon and you will be expected to respond to the allegations contained in the charge sheet. Meanwhile, you are requested not to visit any beach soccer offices or to conduct any activities associated with the sport of beach soccer, including transacting any business on behalf of Beach Soccer Zimbabwe during your period of suspension,” part of the suspension letter read.

The elections were initially pencilled for July 14, but the Zifa Electoral Committee deferred the polls as they sought to clarify issues related to the electoral college of the affiliate.

The Zimbabwe Professional Golf Association (ZPGA) is close to signing a deal with the South African Professional Golf Association, which is set to aid the development of the sport in Zimbabwe.

BY GARISH PHIRI

It will include an affiliation with the PGA of Europe.

ZPGA director of golf development, William Lake, expressed delight at the development, saying it is set to develop golf as a major sport in the country.

“This directly benefits our local golfing community in that they will have access to the world’s finest coaching and teaching programmes so that our Zimbabwean golfing public can improve their games. We want to develop the game across our country,” he said.

ZGA believe that with better knowledge, the local players can improve their games.

ZPGA president Gary Thompson, who recently returned from the British Senior Open, said the arrangement, once in place, is set to enhance development of the game and create employment opportunities.

“We are very thankful to those behind this development. Our focus goes beyond tournaments and professional performance. It will take time, but our local pros and those who want to become teaching pros those with a five handicaps or better are welcome,” Thompson said.

“Those who want to work in the golfing industry should have at least five ‘O’ Levels. Those who want to get into golf teaching are also welcome. We will better their knowledge of coaching so that they get a global accreditation into pro golf.”

The ZPGA recently partnered with the Harare City Council in the revival of the Harare Open golf tournament.

The tournament makes a return on the local golfing calendar this week after a four-year absence with a lucrative prize fund of $20 000 on offer.

The tournament was last held in 2014 and it disappeared after losing sponsorship. It returns to Chapman Golf Club from August 9 to10.

There were at least 50 entries for this edition by yesterday.

“We have over 50 entries and a lot of interest from the South Africans, so we’re pretty excited for Harare,” Lake said.

Some of Zimbabwe’s best female athletes have been invited for a surprise and will be announced after the prize-giving ceremony

Eastern Region Division One pacesetters Manica Diamonds’ coach Luke Masomere has been left disappointed by Sydney Linyama who has gone AWOL for one-and-a-half months at the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC)-owned side.

BY JOTHAM GUTSA

Luke Masomere

The lanky centre-back has not reported for duty and his coach was left with no option, but to deregister him.

Manica Diamond currently lead the 16-team Eastern region Division One League with 41 points from 15 matches.

“Sydney Linyama has not reported for duty for one-and-a-half months now and he has not been communicating with me. I don’t even know where he is and why he has not been reporting for work. He once called the team manager and was told to call me, but to my surprise, he has not done so. We have de-registered him together with four other players,” Masomere said.

This is not the first time that Linyama has gone AWOL, having also disappeared on Dynamos, as they prepared for a continental assignment in 2013.

Manica Diamond have beefed up their squad, as they signed midfielder Tinashe Chigede from Shabanie Mine and Tatenda Kureti from Surrey, while they de-registered Jacob Muzokomba, defender William Mapfumo, Lungisi Ndlovu, Linyama and Edgar Tapera.

On Sunday, Lawrence Masibhera and Ishmael Lawe scored for Manica Diamonds against army side Buffaloes to open an 11-point gap at the top in an entertaining match played at Mutare Boys High and look firm candidates for the sole ticket to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League from their region after second-placed Tenax were held 2-2 by Gaza Gunners in a match played at Gaza Stadium in Chipinge.

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services side Tenax have 30 points from 15 games.

Marondera-based Surrey are third with 28 points, while former top-flight side Buffaloes are fourth with the same number of points, but with an inferior goal difference.

Basement side Melfort recorded their first league win with an emphatic 4-1 victory over second from bottom side Mwenezana, while fifth-placed Green Fuel drew 1-1 with Surrey.

Struggling Shabanie lock down want-away Mupumha twins

THE Mupumha brothers, Ozil and Tinashe, are at odds with their club Shabanie Mine, which is reluctant to release the duo who want to seek greener pastures as the Zvishavane-based side continues to struggle financially.

BY TERRY MADYAUTA

Ozil was due to join Mbombela United in South Africa’s National First Division in June, but his move was put on hold, as Shabanie Mine failed to give him clearance.

Tinashe, on the other hand, asked to leave the club in the mid-season transfer window, but he was frustrated as the club also declined to clear him.

The players have since approached Footballers Union of Zimbabwe for assistance and with the transfer window already closed, they are likely to languish on the sidelines until the season ends.

“Since the mid-season, I politely asked to leave the club, but until now, nothing has happened. I was due to join Mbombela, but it failed because I was not cleared,” Ozil said.

“The same goes for Tinashe, he wanted to move out, but they just went silent. They don’t pick calls. So now, I will be on the sidelines until October or November because they did not give me the clearance letter.

“I joined the team in February on a one-year contract, but like in many cases, they did not meet their financial obligations, no salary or bonus and not even signing-on fees. I have accepted that the club is struggling, but they cannot struggle to clear players who want to go for greener pastures.”

The club was hit by a massive player exodus, which was underlined by the departure of leading goalscorer David Temwanjira, who moved to ZPC Kariba.

Other players that dumped the ailing outfit include Ali Maliselo, Joe Nyabinde, Tinashe Chigede, Kibaki Dlamini, Carlos Rusere and McDonald Makuwe.

THE return leg of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League between Highlanders and Dynamos set for Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo has been further postponed, as the league programme, which had been put on ice for two weeks, resumes at the weekend.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

Dynamos coach Lloyd Mutasa

The tie was cancelled together with the rest of the league games at the weekend preceding the harmonised elections that were held on July 30.

The matches were cancelled following disturbances in Harare, where at least seven people were killed following street protests over election results.

In fixtures released yesterday by the PSL’s competition manager Elisha Mandireva, the Highlanders and Dynamos’ match has once again been cancelled.

Contacted for comment yesterday, PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare could only say: “The match has been postponed due to logistical issues.”

The two teams have been picked to face each other during the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Emmerson Munangagwa.

Both teams have already been informed that they will play as part of the programme for the inauguration ceremony.

League pacesetters FC Platinum will be travelling to Bulawayo to take on struggling Bulawayo City at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday.

Bekithemba Ndlovu takes charge of Bulawayo City as acting head coach after Amini Soma-Phiri was fired following a string of poor results.

FC Platinum are on 46 points from 20 games and are two points ahead of title contenders Ngezi Platinum Stars, who host Nichrut at Baobab Stadium on Saturday.

The two platinum miners resume their title tussle as FC Platinum look to stem a poor run that has seen them fail to win their last three matches.

Ngezi, on the other hand, have regained their winning touch after having gone through a bad patch, where they lost four matches on the trot.

Chicken Inn, on 37 points, are away to struggling Shabanie Mine at Maglas Stadium on Sunday.

Caps United host Black Rhinos at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday, while Triangle hit the road to Nyamhunga Stadium for ZPC Kariba.

The Green Machine usually play their home matches at the National Sports Stadium, but this time, they have moved to Rufaro, presumably because of the inauguration ceremony, whose dates have not yet been announced.

The only other match to be played on Sunday features Yadah and Herentals at Rufaro.

Log anchors Mutare City Rovers are away to Harare City at Rufaro on Friday, while Chapungu host Bulawayo City at Ascot Stadium the following day.

After a two-week mid-season break, all the 18 clubs played three matches each before another two-week break due to the political situation in the country.

Highlanders and Dynamos will have to wait a little longer for the much-awaited return leg after the Bulawayo giants won 1-0 in Harare in April.

Fixtures

Friday: Harare City v Mutare City Rovers (Rufaro)

Saturday; Chapungu v Bulawayo Chiefs (Ascot), Caps United v Black Rhinos (Rufaro ), Bulawayo City v FC Platinum (Barbourfields), ZPC Kariba v Triangle United (Nyamhunga), Ngezi Platinum Stars v Nichrut (Baobab)

Ngezi’s Nhivi blow

Ngezi Platinum Stars have suffered a body blow following the injury to new acquisition, Simba Nhivi, as they relaunch their bid to seize control of the title race against fellow platinum miners and reigning champions FC Platinum.

BY Kevin Mapasure

Simba Nhivi

With FC Platinum having already secured the ticket to the next Caf Champions League that kicks off towards the end of the year, the top-flight league’s main prize has become worthier for Ngezi, who also have an ambition of making an impression in the African safari.

The championship this year comes with a ticket to the 2019-20 Caf Champions League and Ngezi have gone out in full force to wrest the title away from their rivals FC Platinum.
Having lost Terrence Dzvukamanja to Bidvest Wits of South Africa, Ngezi used their financial lure to prise away Nhivi from Caps United.

Just as he started his new job, Nhivi suffered a hand injury that is likely to keep him out for weeks and will see him miss out a part of the title charge.

Nhivi suffered the injury during training on Monday and by yesterday, Ngezi were waiting for a medical report to ascertain the extent of the injury and the time that he will be out.

The club confirmed the injury, but did not shed light on how long it will keep him out.

Dzvukamanja was Ngezi’s main source of goals, having scored eight of their 32 goals so far this season.

Nhivi, who will definitely miss the weekend clash against Nichrut, had scored five goals for Caps before his sensational switch to the well-resourced platinum miners.

Ngezi will be looking to maintain pressure on FC Platinum at the top when they take on relegation-bound Nichrut at the Baobab Stadium on Saturday.

The top two teams are currently separated by two points and none can afford a slip-up at this stage.

FC Platinum have gone for three matches without a win, while Ngezi recovered from a four-match losing streak to record victories over Triangle and Dynamos before the season took a break for the national elections.

As the league resumes, both teams will be looking to kick off with wins as they face sides that occupy the relegation places.

Ngezi will be full of confidence, playing at their home ground, where they have only lost once this season. Nichrut, on the other hand, have only recorded two wins away from home and have the second lowest goals tally in the league with just 15 so far this season.

Having conducted some transfer business that has seen the arrival of travelled striker Roderick Mutuma, they have seen a change in fortunes, having won two of their last three matches.

FC Platinum have a tricky fixture as they take on Bulawayo City at Barbourfields on Saturday, seeking to return to winning ways.

All of Bulawayo City’s four wins have come at home this season, but all of them have been against teams in and around the relegation zone.

FC Platinum will present a different challenge to them as they start life under the mentorship of Bekithemba Ndlovu following the sacking of Amini Phiri.

Norman Mapeza’s side have travelled to Bulawayo twice this season, winning against Chicken Inn, while they were one of Bulawayo Chiefs’ casualties.

Chicken Inn play catch-up

CHICKEN Inn coach Joey Antipas says his boys will not be disturbed by the disruption of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League programme just after they had hit top form in the second half of the league campaign.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

Joey Antipas

The Bulawayo-based side relaunch their title quest with a match against struggling Shabanie Mine at Maglas Stadium on Sunday as they play catch-up with platinum miners, FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Just before the games were cancelled ahead of the harmonised elections held on July 30, Chicken Inn were on a roll after they got a point from a 1-1 draw away to Dynamos before thumping Nichrut at home as well as beating Mutare City Rovers.

That feat has seen them mount a serious challenge after closing the gap on FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum Stars, who had indifferent displays just before and after the mid-season break.

Chicken Inn are on position three, seven points behind Ngezi Platinum and nine behind FC Platinum, with the two sides playing on Saturday against Nichrut (home) and Bulawayo City (away), respectively.

After the break, FC Platinum fell to ZPC Kariba at Nyamhunga Stadium, drew 1-1 away to Yadah and played a goalless draw at home against Caps United, while their fellow platinum miners Ngezi, who approached the break on a slump, lost to Herentals before beating Triangle and Dynamos.

Antipas yesterday said it was business as usual in the GameCocks’ camp, but remains unassertive about his challenge for the league title, having being on record in the first half of the season, saying the title belonged to either of the platinum miners.

“I would not want to comment much about the break, but at times it is good to have a breather. For us, it was business as usual and we are looking forward to playing our upcoming games. FC Platinum and Ngezi (Platinum Stars) are still on pole position and we are playing catch-up. We just take our games as they come and need to be winning our games and they (FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum Stars) lose theirs and we see how it goes,” Antipas said.

Chicken Inn’s Obriel Chirinda scored a hat-trick against Nichrut at Luveve Stadium and is one man to watch at the GameCocks.

Defender Last Sithole, who joined Chicken Inn from Bulawayo Chiefs in mid-season, has settled in well, partnering Moses Jackson in central defence.

They were also joined by goalkeeper Samuel Mafukidze and Bravie Sibanda, but Antipas says they have been joined by young players who have been doing well at the club, but have to be managed, saying it would not be easy against Shabanie Mine at Maglas, despite beating them 3-0 in the first leg at Luveve.

“That is a result from the past and we can’t bank on that. Shabanie are a new side and we will have to be on our toes to win it,” Antipas said.

They have brought on board former How Mine forward Tinashe Makanda who was with South Africa First Division side Stellenbosch, Tafadzwa Sibanda from Southern Region Division One side TelOne and Denzel Khumalo from Bosso 90.

Dinha shields slumping Sables

Former Sables captain Costa Dinha has attributed the team’s slump to lack of a competitive national league.

The Zimbabwe national 15s rugby side have endured a nightmare campaign in the Africa Rugby Gold Cup, where they currently face relegation, having failed to win a single match.
They have to win their last match away to Uganda on August 18 to stand a chance of staying afloat in the top-tier group.

Dinha absolved both the technical team and players from blame, saying lack of league structures was the root cause of the team’s slide.

“I don’t think we can blame either the coaches or the players in this situation although I think there are some players who could have been involved in this campaign who were left out,” Dinha said.

“If you look at the history of the game in Zimbabwe, we always do well when we have our league running. We need to have a national league and then the national team will sort itself out. You can rely on foreign-based players, but it’s still important to have a national league running if the national team is to be successful.”

He said that the changes that the coaches made to bring in Shayne Makombe and Tafadzwa Chitokwindo were a positive development, but he felt they should have been made earlier.

“I think those changes should have been done earlier and I feel there is a lot of talent out there that should have been considered.” Dinha added that if the team manages to survive, there is need to start working on a five-year programme for the next qualifiers.

“Surviving will be a tall order, but if we do, then we should start working on the programme for the next World Cup. We should identify players that we should work with until the next qualifiers. I think we can survive, the players have started to gel well and the changes have improved the team. The Uganda game will be a very close one and for our players, it’s a mental battle since they will be playing away.”

The 2018 international rugby season promised lots of excitement and possibly success for Zimbabwean rugby before it kicked off, but it is set to end with a whimper, if not embarrassment.

The arrival of Peter de Villiers as the coach for the national 15s side was met with a lot of approval, triggering high expectation, as the Sables entered the race for the top prize and more importantly, a ticket to the 2019 International Rugby Board World Cup, whose final will be staged in Japan.

Zimbabwe had come out of a difficult season under the mentorship of Cyprian Mandenge, who was dismissed after a poor showing in 2017, where Zimbabwe only managed to avoid relegation to the second-tier.
