Tough times for Zim juniors at ITF tourney

Zimbabwean junior tennis players found the going tough in the second leg of the ITF 18 and Under tournament with the hosts’ remaining players Thabo Ncube and Kimberly Kaome losing their encounters in straight sets.

Restricted to watching from the sidelines – this is the story of Zimbabwean players competing at the ITF 18 and Under Junior Tennis Extravaganza at Harare Sports Club where no local player was able to progress to the quarter-finals.

Thabo Ncube faced Faris Zakariya of Egypt but lost that contest 7-6, 6-2.

With hopes in the boy’s category pinned on Thabo, it was disappointment for Ncube who will be hoping for an improved performance in the 3rd and final leg.

In the girls’ category, it was an early exit for Kimberly Bhunu with Kimberly Kaome the only Zimbabwean player to make it to the second round.

Kaome, however, lost her second round encounter 6-1, 6-1 to Muskan Gupta of India.

With Zimbabwe failing to provide a quarter-finalist in both the boys and girls categories, Tennis Zimbabwe will be hoping the third leg will be one of better fortunes.

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe wants his players to retain focus if they are to outwit Black Rhinos in a Castle Lager Premiership match at Rufaro this afternoon.

Chitembwe’s men have not won since the beginning of the second half of the season, drawing all three matches.

The army side have performed slightly better that the Green Machine, amassing four points in their last three outings.

“To an extent, the break affected us, but all the same the good thing is all the teams were on a break and so it’s not really important,” said Chitembwe.

“I also believe that it was a really good thing for players to rest.

“We anticipate a very difficult game, Rhinos have been doing well in recent weeks and I think their coach Herbert Maruwa has done a great job with that team, but all the same, we have to perform better than them.

“As a coach, you give yourself a chance to win matches and it’s the same case with us.

“We want to go out there and play with lot of pride, determination and belief that we are good enough to win games.’’

He said new arrivals like Mitchelle Katsvairo and Thabani Goredema will add depth to the team.

“What has been good for us is that we have players like Mitchelle (Katsvairo) and Goredema (Thabani) who are craving to play for us and that shows the amount of belief that these players have in the team,” said Chitembwe.

Makepekepe are fifth on the log with 32 points, while their opponents today are three places further down on 29 points.

Both teams have failed to win a game at Rufaro this season. Rhinos have played there six times, while the Green Machine were held to a goalless draw by Harare City in their only match there.

The Sunshine Boys were held to a 1-1 draw by Mutare City at Rufaro yesterday.

MANCHESTER. – Manchester United were not perfect in the opening game of the 2018-2019 English Premiership season last night, but came away with three points after a 2-1  win against a battling Leicester City.

United had to wait until the last 10 minutes to make the points safe, and via an unlikely source – Luke Shaw slotting home for his first goal in senior football.

Jamie Vardy bundled home a close range consolation, but it was not enough as Claude Puel’s side headed home empty-handed.

Romelu Lukaku missed a sitter, with only the keeper to beat, in the 78th minute, while Alexis Sanchez had a very poor game.

Mudimu ready for new season

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor
ZIMBABWE international Alec Mudimu is relishing the start of the Welsh Premier League season today and is also hopeful his fellow Warriors will quickly get into their groove to bolster the national team’s African Cup of Nations qualifying chances.

The Warriors’ galaxy of stars, the bulk of whom are based in South Africa and Europe, are just coming out of the off-season break, with their new terms starting just a month before the senior team resume their 2019 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Zimbabwe, looking to build on their opening day 3-0 demolition of Liberia at the National Sports Stadium last year, will travel to Brazzaville on the first week of September to face Congo.

ZIFA Communications and Competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela said the Congolese were yet to advise them of the exact date and venue of the match.

The Warriors are not leaving anything to chance as coach Sunday Chidzambwa has targeted a win on the road or, at least, a draw.

That match looks set to provide Mudimu with his maiden dance with a Nations Cup assignment.

The tall CEFN Druids midfielder, who plays as a central defender for his country, impressed Chidzambwa during the COSAFA Cup tournament in Polokwane.

Mudimu had earlier caught the coach’s eye during a four-nation invitational tourney in Zambia, with Chidzambwa revealing he might have finally found one of the missing links to his central defensive puzzle.

He is now bracing for the start of the Welsh top-flight and the 23-year-old defender told The Herald yesterday that CEFN Druids had enjoyed a fine pre-season which should help them in the championship race.

They play their opening match against Caernarfon Town in North Wales tomorrow night.

“Our pre-season has been good, coming on the back of Europa League the team has been sharp and consistent in winning ways.

“We have only lost one of four in our pre-season games, so I’m very positive moving forward and can’t wait to get started with the season,’’ Mudimu said.

He also hailed the spirit in their dressing room and said they had learnt some good lessons from their brief flirtation with the Europa League which ended at the first hurdle after they were knocked out by FK Trakai of Lithuania.

“The team feeling is good, everyone’s together now the old and new players which is important because everyone’s gelling well together.

“I think, personally, looking back from Europe, we can take back and learn more about composure. It was a big thing for us and for big stages like that we must be composed’’.

Mudimu said he was praying that his Warriors teammates would get their seasons off to blistering starts and be in peak form when Chidzambwa’s men regroup for their trip to Brazzaville.

“It’s very, very important for everyone to have a good start to their season because the qualifiers are coming very soon and if all those playing in the national squad have had a good start to the season, and everyone’s fit, sharp and confident it would work wonders.

“With the talent we have in the national squad, one can only imagine how far we can go . . . it’s a very exciting time coming up for us.’’

The South African Premiership started last weekend with the likes of Khama Billiat, Kuda Mahachi and Terrence Dzvukamanja swinging into action at their new clubs – Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits.

Skipper Knowledge Musona will also be featuring for a new club this season, Anderlecht, as will midfielder Marvellous Nakamba at Club Brugge, with both sides featuring in the Belgian top-flight.

THE REAL PREMIERSHIP IS BACK AND IT’S BAD NEWS FOR THE DOMESTIC LEAGUE

Robson Sharuko
IN  the beginning, we used to watch Big League Soccer on television — a weekly highlights package show — which showcased the best there was about English football.

Back in the ‘80s when the likes of Bryan Robson, Kenny Daglish, Bruce Grobbelaar, Frank Stapleton, Ian Rush, John Barnes, Norman Whiteside, Gary Lineker and Glenn Hoddle — were some of the stars.

My late father had invested in a television, the one where you would use a knob on the right to search for the only channel it showed, ZTV, and back then it was such a prestigious and priceless item of property it used to give some bragging rights for those who had it at home.

My late elder brother, in particular, found it very fashionable, in those days of our childhood innocence, to always brag about our television.

Mum even had a special cloth knitted by the community’s best tailor which she would, every night, use to cover our television just before we all retired to bed to ensure it would not be scratched by crawling pests.

Mukadota Family was popular back then, Mai Rwizi was such a figure of innocence she reminded us of mum and Mai Phineas was a symbol of raw beauty which, even for us in those days of our innocence, used to drill its powers of attraction into us.

Every time she smiled, or laughed, with her sparkling eyes that used to explode with the laughter, it triggered a chemistry that would illuminate the living room and in that moment we would all find some warmth and happiness nothing seemed to matter much.

Because the televisions were far and few between in our neighbourhood back in those days, mum would ensure the curtains to the living room were drawn backwards to make sure many of our neighbours would get a chance, through the windows, to watch the show from outside.

But for all the magic of Mukadota, probably the greatest television series ever produced by Zimbabweans for Zimbabweans, with its weight measured in the same gold colours that have made Mazoe such a big part of our lives we even go into rebellion when they change its taste and look, there was something I picked out back then.

That there was something special, in terms of appeal, about football and while Mukadota and his family would bring the house down in our neighbourhood, Big League Soccer tended to have a special audience week in and week out.

Maybe the fact that ours was a community where football was a part of our lives, a refreshing divorce from a life where the majority of our parents and brothers’ daily grinds were an eight hour underground search for gold where there were no guarantees they would return alive, helped make this game very special.

Officially, our team was called Falcon Gold, but we called it Bwela Ufe, which in the dominant Chewa language of a community made up mostly of Malawian and Zambian immigrants meant ‘Come and Die’, because we rarely lost at home, no matter the opposition, no matter the circumstances.

Football ran in our veins and that probably also explained why the weekly Big League Soccer programme was immensely popular that dozens of our community members would make the weekly pilgrimage to our house to get a chance to see the action.

Some, like Mudhara Mwanza, whose son David, the bearded one whom they later nicknamed Chikwama, would become a star good enough to play for Warriors, always had a front row seat to the action, sitting on one of the sofas and watching from inside the living room.

Others had to find spots outside the house and peep through the window, whose curtains — just like on the occasions the Mukadota Family show or Mvengemvenge were being screened — would be drawn out to provide them with a chance to get a glimpse of the magic from the little box.

We all had our favourite teams and even though Manchester United didn’t win as many games as became the case under the Ferguson revolution after it first started to gain steam in ‘93, I had long chosen the Red Devils as my team.

Liverpool were very popular, primarily because they used to dominate the scene, and also because they had in their ranks a player, Bruce Grobbelaar, which the locals identified with as the boy from Bulawayo who had made it into the big time.

From those humble beginnings, for many of them, a fascinating love affair with English football, which would grow with the passage of time to become virtually a religion whose stars were transformed into some kind of saints, started.

With time, satellite television came along and proved a game-changer.

And where we used to watch just one weekly highlights package show of English football, we now could watch many games, including live matches, and the number of television sets in the community had also increased with virtually every household having its own box.

With it also came challenges for the domestic Premiership as it lost some of its patronage.

Where Dynamos used to average 30 000, back in the days when it was normal for Rufaro to be packed for every match in the ‘80s, now they struggle to get even 5 000 to their home matches as thousands have become Facebook fans who only follow the team on social or mainstream media.

Where Highlanders used to average 30 000, back in the days when it was normal for Barbourfields to be packed for every match, now they struggle to get 5 000 to their home matches as thousands choose to stay away.

The majority now discuss their team’s progress and trials and tribulations on WhatsApp groups and choose to watch the English Premiership because they tell you that is where the real football is played.

Last night, the first shots of another marathon of the English Premiership were fired when my beloved

Manchester United took on Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Today a number of matches are lined up on the traditional day where most of the league’s matches are played and, from this weekend, it will be full throttle until a winner is declared in May next year.

For many, it’s the return of something that has, just like Facebook and Twitter, now become a huge part of their lives and the months when the Premiership is on its annual summer break it annoys them a lot.

They feel a kind of emptiness to their lives, not getting a chance to watch their favourite teams and players in action and not getting a chance to mock their rivals on the occasions the teams those people support don’t do well. It has become an annual ritual, we even scramble to order the new kits which our clubs would have unveiled for the season, itself a money-making venture which has made those teams richer and richer, Manchester United is now valued at more than $4 billion, second only to the Dallas Cowboys, in terms of value.

But all this undiluted passion we direct towards these teams, celebrating off-shore heroes the majority of us might never meet in our lifetimes, whose stadiums the majority of us will never go in our lifetimes, has come at a huge cost to our domestic Premiership.

It has complicated matters for what in the past used to be a beautiful romance between us and our domestic league where we would go to the stadiums in our thousands to watch our local heroes and support our local teams.

Now, many of us have turned their backs on local football with the majority saying the standards have plummeted because they tend to compare what they see at Rufaro or Barbourfields and other places, on the occasions they go there, to what they see on television being beamed from the fields of the English Premiership.

A few weeks ago, two United States-based DeMbare fans, Praise Zenenga and Douglas Mpondi — who were back home on vacation, were shocked by the poor turnout they saw at Rufaro when they decided to go there for another romantic fling with their old club.

A huge constituency which, in the past, would not miss a match featuring Dynamos, Highlanders or CAPS United, has been lost to this English football revolution and they even tell you that they have never been to a local stadium in years.

They would rather watch Pogba instead of Chipunza, watch Mahrez rather than Mabvura, watch Vardy instead of Kumwala, watch Allisson rather than Dube, watch Willian instead of any midfielder in the domestic Premiership and watch De Bruyne rather than anyone that the local league can give them as its star attraction.

The statistics paint a horror picture of a domestic league that is dying, being slowly choked by the growing attraction of the English Premiership, being suffocated by the relentless appeal of a league that has cast its spell around the world and being swallowed by a giant whose appeal and strength knows no bounds.

Last year, only 441 000 fans watched the domestic Premiership, the lowest combined number of fans to watch the league in history, and given that there are 18 teams now, you get an average of about 763 fans per every match that was played in the local league.

Manchester United, who draw 76 000 to every home game that they play, will have more fans, coming to Old Trafford, in just their first six games than the combined number of fans who watched all the domestic Premiership matches last year.

In the past six years, the domestic Premiership has lost more than 200 000 fans, which means that a third of the constituency that used to go and watch local football, has turned its back on the game and, unfortunately, it’s getting worse and worse with each passing year.

WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES BEING DEVOURED BY THIS ENGLISH FOOTBALL TSUNAMI

The trail of disaster being left by this English football hurricane is not only confined to the Zimbabwe Premiership as the Nigerian domestic league has also been virtually destroyed, when you consider attendance figures, and no one in the continent’s most populous country now even care to go and watch the local matches.

They even celebrate Arsenal Day in Kogi State in Nigeria, where the Gunners fans come for a two-day celebration of their beloved English team. They all wear the red-and-white Arsenal colours, sing songs, dance and eat in a festival of happiness in celebration of the Gunners and there are more than 20 000 registered members of the group.

The Nigerians are not alone in this dilemma because, all over West, Central, Eastern and Southern Africa, the effect of this English football revolution is being felt.

“We prepare and come to play to honour our fixtures without expecting much from fans because they no longer come to stadiums,’’ Djibril Drame, who was the coach of Malian champions Stade Malien, told Goal.com.

“Our teams and the league cannot improve in this condition. It’s making life difficult for every club in Africa.”

Journalist Kingsley Kobo wrote an authoritative piece on this.

“Countless African football fans are able to name nearly all of the players from most of Europe’s elite clubs and even give clear details about their career, but ask them to name the first XI of their country’s top club, and they will fumble, blush and give you maybe two or three names, without any knowledge of the players’ ages or where they were bought from,’’ he wrote for Goal.com.

“Club proprietors, football federations and ministries of sport across the continent are aware of the ebbing interest and enthusiasm for the domestic leagues, engendered by the growing attention for the English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and French Ligue 1.

“The professionalisation of African leagues experimented by a number of countries is yet to yield envisaged results and lure back traditional supporters, who remain hooked on football action unfolding far away from their shores, which could keep the domestic leagues on the decline for the five reasons listed below.

“During matchdays, formerly staunch supporters gather at vibrant pubs to watch games of their favourite European teams on wide screens, forgetting the derby playing at a stadium nearby. Instead of spending $3 attending a game of unknown players, investing it to watch Arsenal or Chelsea while drinking cold beer with friends seems more ideal.

“Clubs continue to register low attendances and scanty subscriptions from fans at matches that do not involve big derbies or cup finals. Recently, 42 people were counted at a stadium in Senegal during a division one match. During a game in Accra, Ghana, 117 made the journey to the match while 29 were at a venue in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

“The craze over English football (in Uganda) contrasts sharply with the local game. Only the previous month, two of the country’s top clubs, Police and URA, had met in a key Ugandan Super League match at the 40,000–seater Namboole stadium in the capital Kampala.

“According to John Vianney Nsimbe, who covers the league for Uganda’s Observer newspaper, barely 100 fans watched the game. Bigger matches – for example those between traditional giants Express and Kampala City Council (KCC) or SC Villa may have between 1,000 and 3,000 fans in the stadium.

“Still, 10 or 15 years ago, such big league games attracted 15,000 or more spectators.’

Maybe, on reflection, I should have known, back then when Big League Soccer used to attract that passionate crowd which used to watch through the window of my parents’ house in the ‘80s.

To God Be The Glory!

Come on Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Khamaldinhoooooooooooooooooo!

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
KALUSHA BWALYA has said he will fight to clear his name, and prove his innocence, after the African football legend was slapped with a two-year ban from the game by FIFA for receiving a controversial $80 000 payment from outlawed Qatari business tycoon Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 54-year-old Zambian, who is a CAF executive member and the only footballer from this part of the continent to win the African Footballer of the Year award, is the first high-profile figure from the continent to be slapped with a ban by the world football governing body for a scandal triggered by an expose by the Sunday Times of Britain in June four years ago.

The newspaper published leaked e-mails which showed Bin Hammam, who once held the post of FIFA vice president and leader of the Asian Football Confederation before he fell from grace after being banned from the game for life in 2012, paid a number of high-profile figures in the game in the countdown to his challenge for the presidency of world football.

The payments also came prior to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, with Qatar winning the bid to host the next edition of football’s biggest showcase.

About 25 African football leaders were said to have corruptly benefited from a $5 million slash fund which was being run by Bin Hammam.

Bin Hammam was found by a FIFA Ethics Committee investigation, chaired by Michael Garcia, guilty of “repeated violations” of the ethics code on conflicts of interest, during his time as the AFC president and also while on the FIFA Executive Committee between 2008 and 2011.

Some of the allegations included that:

Two days prior to inviting 25 members of African football associations on an all-expenses paid junket to Kuala Lumpur, $200 000 was withdrawn from the Asian Football Confederation accounts.

A second junket organised was four months later, guests were encouraged to bring their family and were each given $5 000 spending money.

Swaziland Football Association boss Adam “Bomber’’ Mthethwa requested a $30k payment as his “gratuity (which) will only be paid to me when I reach the age of 55 in 2010.”

Bin Hammam arranged for the delivery of 60 tickets for matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup (valued at £3,800) to the then CAF president Issa Hayatou.

Fadoul Houssein, a Djibouti football leader, e-mailed him to that he was “sure” Bin Hammam would win the FIFA presidency and received $30 000 to fund “expensive medical treatment” for his association’s general secretary.

Bin Hammam asked the Sudan Football Association to provide details to make a payment after they claimed to not be able to afford to pay for the general assembly.

Seedy Kinteh, the president of the Gambia Football Association was paid $10k. Kinteh implied that the money was paid in exchange for a vote to become president of FIFA when he signed off the email: “I have every reason to be grateful and indeed my President and Brother I am.’’ Kinteh later received $50 000 for a new car paid through bin Hammam’s daughter’s account.

The Qatari paid Manuel Dende, the Sao Tome FA boss $50 000 after the latter had initially requested $232 000.

Izetta Wesley, the Liberian football leader, was paid $10 000.

The FIFA executive member associations, Cameroon, Nigeria and Cote dÍvoire were paid $400 000 while $50 000 was paid to the Namibian Football Association to assist with “Second Division leagues that had been affected by financial challenges.

The Somali Football Federation were paid $100 000 through Bin Hammam daughter’s account, CECAFA were paid $200 000 three days after the World Cup bids had been decided to fund the 2010 CECAFA Cup.

Bwalya, who scored the late goal that knocked Zimbabwe out of contention for a place at the 1994 AFCON finals as Zambia scrambled a draw at the National Sports Stadium, was paid $80 000.

Yesterday, FIFA, who have been investigating the Zambian since February last year, announced he had been banned for two years.

“The adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has banned Kalusha Bwalya, member of the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football, for two years from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level,’’ FIFA said in a statement.

“The investigation against Mr Bwalya was opened on 28 February 2017, and focused principally on benefits that Mr Bwalya had received from Mr Bin Hammam.

“The adjudicatory chamber found Mr Bwalya guilty of having violated art. 16 (Confidentiality) and art. 20 (Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits) of the FIFA Code of

Ethics. A fine in the amount of CHF 100 000 was also imposed on Mr Bwalya.

“The decision was notified to Mr Bwalya today, and the ban comes into force immediately.’’

Bwalya posted a statement on twitter yesterday said he would fight to prove his innocence.

“I am surprised and saddened by today’s receipt of the notification from the FIFA Ethics Committee adjudication,’’ Bwalya said. “I have instructed my legal team to immediately appeal this decision urgently and would like to state that I am NOT guilty of any offence, which allegedly took place.

“I have never done and will never do anything to bring the beautiful game into disrepute and stand by the facts provided by me to the Committee.

“I unfortunately cannot provide any further details as my legal team has advised that this would jeopardise my chances of obtaining leave to appeal.

“FIFA’s decision is not final and I will fight tooth and nail for justice to clear my name. I thank all my fans for their on-going support.’’

Bwalya has previously said he received a loan, when he was going through some tough times financially, and intended to repay the money paid by Bin Hammam.

An initial $50 000 was paid into his account in 2009 and a further $30 000 followed in December 2011.

The payment was triggered by an email which Bwalya wrote to Bin Hammam.

“As per our conversation, please Mr president if you could assist me with about 50 thousand Dollars for my Football association and personal expenditures,’’ he wrote.

“I hope to repay you in the near future, as the burden is little bit too hard for me at this moment.’’

It’s Jere vs Matikinyidze for PSL top post

ZIFA yesterday announced the two candidates for the Premier Soccer League chairmanship elections with Harare businessman and Caps United owner Farai Jere set to battle it out with Triangle United chairman Lovemore Matikinyidze.

BY HENRY MHARA

Nominations for PSL’s top position closed last Friday, for the crunch elections set for September 9.

Jere initially appeared to be strolling to the top when he filed his papers unopposed on July 14, but a constitutional irregularity was raised when it was discovered that his nomination papers had been signed by Northern Region Division One executives Willard Manyengavana and Sweeney Mushonga as well as Yadah Stars chairman, Everson Chatambudza.

The PSL constitution requires that only members of the PSL are mandated to propose candidates for the office of the chairman.

This forced the Zifa electoral committee to reopen the nomination process, where Jere and Matikinyidze threw in their names in the hat.

The electoral committee met this week for verification, and were this time satisfied with the papers submitted.

Chicken Inn chairman Lifa Ncube was elected unopposed for the PSL vice-presidency.

Mapeza demands results

$
0
0

FC PLATINUM coach Norman Mapeza has demanded positive results from his players when they face struggling Bulawayo City at Barbourfields Stadium this afternoon.

BY HENRY MHARA/FORTUNE MBELE

The log leaders have had a terrible second half of the season, picking just two points from a possible nine.

They were beaten by ZPC Kariba at home before they were held by Yadah and Caps United, a run of form that saw their lead at the top of the log cut to just two points.

For a team that looked to be cruising in the past few weeks, these sets of results appear to have shocked Mapeza, who if his team had won at least two of these matches, could have been out of sight by now.

Now, they are forced to continue checking above their shoulders as Ngezi Platinum Stars breathe down their neck, and third-placed Chicken Inn are not far off in this intriguing title race.

Mapeza knows failure to get three points on this one, their title campaign is off the rails. With Stars hosting Nichrut at home in what is a winnable match for the Tonderai Ndiraya-coached side, failure to get maximum points for Mapeza could see his team in second position by the end of the day.

Speaking at a pre-match conference ahead of the match, the former Warriors captain admitted that his team is under pressure to perform, but was quick to point it was “normal in football”.

“Everyone knows we didn’t have a good start to the second half of the season. We have to rectify the problems that we faced in those first three games, and from the look of things, the guys are doing everything in training and I just hope that when we get there, we can get a positive result,” Mapeza said.

“So far so good, I can’t complain. The guys are raring to go. They trained very well in the past weeks and they just have to be positive when we go out there.”

The season is resuming after a lengthy break that was necessitated by the harmonised elections, and Mapeza feels that the break could have done more harm to his team than good.

“As a coach sometimes you just need continuity. In our last game against Caps United, we did very well and had we continued from where we had left in the following week, we were going to get a positive result. But those were circumstances beyond our control, and it also gives us time to rectify those problems which we had in the previous games.

He is anticipating a tough match from a side that would be under new coach Bhekithemba Ndlovu, who took over from fired Amini Soma Phiri.

“The new coach will try by all means to get a result against us so it’s always difficult because he would put new players to the team who would want to impress,” Mapeza said.

Ndlovu, who has been given a tough task to help the team survive relegation as they sit dangerously on the log table with 15 points from 20 games, is upbeat.

“FC Platinum are a very good side, they are the champions and play very good football. They have a very good coach, but I think tomorrow (today) we will be ready for them. The boys are putting everything into it. They have been working very hard and the determination and the attitude is positive. We will be ready for whatever FC Platinum throw at us. We are down there but not out,” Ndlovu said.

The team has strengthened the squad by bringing in Chris Samakweri, Ozias Zibande, Benson Phiri, goalkeepers Munyaradzi Diya and Kelvin Nyoni.

Ndlovu said his players were motivated for the FC Platinum tie.

“The players’ body language is just excellent. We have been talking to the boys to see the bigger picture for Bulawayo City to stay in the Premier League because if we are relegated, we will become jobless,” he said.

Skipper Zibusiso Sibanda and Sipho Ndlovu are suspended.

RISING star Benjamin Follet-Smith continued his solid start to professional golf after capturing his second title on the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA) Tour following a one shot victory at the $20 000 Harare Open golf tournament at Chapman Golf Club yesterday.

BY DANIEL NHAKANISO

Harare Open champion Benjamin Follet-Smith (right) poses for a picture with runner-up Tonderai Masunga

The 21-year-old carded a final round one-under-par 71 on the 6 521-metre par-72 layout for a three under par 141 total to hold off overnight leader Jack Allard and Tonderai Masunga by one stroke.

Follet-Smith, who will seek to successfully defend his National Aids Council Pro-Am tournament at Royal Harare Golf Club next weekend, walked away with $3 025,75 winners’ prize — not bad for a two-day job.

While he was delighted with the win, Follet-Smith who is known to set very high standards for himself, feels there is still room for improvement in his game ahead of next week’s title defence.

“The first round went pretty much the way I had planned it but unfortunately I didn’t play my best golf throughout the week but overall it worked out and I managed to win by one shot which is what we came here for,” he said.

“I’d love to have played much better so I’ll definitely be going to the practice range and prepare a little harder for next week and hopefully we can get better scores next weekend.

“I didn’t think three under was going to be enough. I was thinking four under maybe but I’ll take three-under if it’s going to give me a win at the end of the day.

Follet-Smith says the windy conditions played a big factor during the tournament following seasonal blistering winds during the 36-hole.

“I found it even more windy today so overall it’s been good to get some experience of playing in those conditions over the two days we don’t often play in winds like this,” he said.

After starting the second round two shots off the lead and putting pressure on the overnight leader Allard, Follet-Smith also needed some stroke of luck towards the end.

He made a crucial birdie on the 16th despite his approach shot coming off the trees before making a clutch par putt on the 18th after his over four iron shot from 240 metres came off the stairs at the Chapman clubhouse and safely back into the fairway.

Former national team amateur golfer Masunga shot the lowest round of the day after rebounding from a 77 on the first day to card a brilliant seven-under-par 65 which lifted him into a share for second position.

The trio of top amateur David Amm, Ryan Cairns and Robson Chinhoi was tied for fourth position on level par 144.

A strong field of 60 professional and amateur golfers took part in the Harare City Council-sponsored tournament that bounced back on the ZPGA Tour circuit after a three-year hiatus.

Acceleration in healing of broken hearts

Bishop B. Manjoro Dunamis

Jesus heals broken hearts! You see a wound on your leg if handled well will quickly cure and dry up, but a bruise, worse off in the inside, right on your heart, naturally may not heal easily.

This is the reason why people even as grown adults can break into tears upon seeing an uncle that hurt them when they were a teenager.

Inner bruises, inner pain, inner bleeding and inner suffering are not a thing to be lightly taken. It requires what we call inner healing! This is a work of the Holy Spirit of God who applies oil on all the bruises and brings healing supernaturally!

In this year of a double portion, a lot has happened, but don’t let hurts destroy you — the oil of God must touch and heal every bruise in your life! O hallelujah!

“And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh, and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish and of an honeycomb, and he took it, and did eat before them,” Luke 24:36-44.

The story begins the day before when the women went in the morning to check at the grave of Jesus if his body was well.

They saw the stone removed and one angel at where his head was and one at where his feet was. One of the angels said “why do you look for the living among the dead?” Listen, don’t remain friends in the grave of pain and sorrow! Rise up with Christ!

Don’t be tied to your uncles, brothers, friends, and everything from the past that kept you stagnant for years! It’s time to shake yourself and say to yourself, where I was, what I was — you will not find me there anymore!

I have resurrected! The way I pray, fast, work, relate, plan and live has changed! The power of resurrection breaks you free from the past and brings the oil of the Holy Spirit, which ministers inner healing to your life! Understand, accept and believe that you rose with Christ from the dead. The old things are no more, 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Despite how disappointing, how bleak, or terrible your past may seem — light, joy, favour and the newness of life has come!

Yes, they hurt you, they spoke damaging words, tainted your image, caused you to be sacked off from work, caused you pain for six years, friend, its time you be free and go to the next level of your life. But bishop right now I am behind bars, serving a long sentence, I do not deserve, what will become of my life?

Be of good courage my friend, God is able, faithful and a good God. This is a good year for you. Be healed in your heart and take the joy of the Lord which is your strength!

Joseph, Job, Paul and Silas went through difficult times but we know one thing for sure — God was faithful, might and strong on their behalf. He neither sleeps nor slumbers, Psalms 121:4. Receive inner healing from the Greatest Physician Jesus Christ!

You see before this resurrection day Jesus needed a donkey to ride on like that time he entered into Jerusalem.

But after he died and resurrected, he needed a donkey no-more, nor a scorch cart! O hallelujah! Jesus entered closed doors, and rode on a cloud on his way to heaven, as they be-held him.

What does it mean to us today? It means a new dimension has come! Zvekukwara-kwara nekushaya zvapera (begging, groping and lack is over!).

Before year end you will drive your car, and get the desire of your heart!

Listen church the day has come, the hour has come for the church to rise up and go to another dimension.

Be healed of the broken heart as you read now! Even if that man or that woman let you down! Release and move on!

Here now is the most touching secret and power of the resurrection of Christ, I got excited when I learnt it and discovered it.

It’s the key to healing of your life and all bruises that may have haunted and pained you for a long time. On the scripture above we see Jesus standing in the room with the disciples saying peace to you.

He stretched his hands, showed them his feet and they saw the holes caused by the nails driven in his body three days ago.

Here is the miracle, he was not hurting! O glory to God! 3 days ago, he was bruised, wounded, put a crown of thorns, pierced on his side, spat on, mocked, laughed and went through the worst emotional trauma ever — yet after resurrection, yes the marks of nails are there but no pain.

He died hurt, bleeding and rose up healed, strong, shining and powerful like never before! Job lost all but he got more powerful and blessed than before! O I like it, I like it! This is powerful!

Friend — receive your healing today.

Receive inner healing today and be healed of every bruise in Jesus name.

You have resurrected! What they did to you is no-more, you are now in a new dimension.

Eh, but Bishop with where I’m coming from and what was done to me, am I really free and healed in my heart?

Friend, I leave you with the seven words that have changed my life, ministry, and many other lives around the world, “For with God all things are possible,” Mark 10:27.

Increasing cases of drug-resistant HIV worrisome

Mirirai Nsingo
The introduction of antiretroviral therapy globally has certainly transformed HIV and AIDS from a terminal to a chronic disease with standards of living for people with the virus having been improved.

Research scientists however worry over the rising cases of drug resistance in HIV which may subsequently lead to more HIV-related deaths, new infections and increase in antiretroviral therapy (ART) costs.

Zimbabwe has not been spared by HIV drug resistance with a World Health Organisation (WHO) 2017 HIV drug resistance report listing the country among six countries out of 11 from Africa, Asia and Latin America showing an increasing trend of the drug resistant strains.

Zimbabwean research scientist and a PhD student at the University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Benjamin Chimukangara raised a red flag at the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam held in July over the rising cases of HIV drug resistance.

He was among the 16 000 researchers, advocates, policy makers, funders and community leaders from more than 160 countries who converged at the 22nd International AIDS Conference to map the way forward towards a road to a world without AIDS.

Chimukangara said Africa and the world can only ignore the threat posed by HIV drug resistance at its own peril noting that this could pose as an impediment to achieving the last 90 of the 90-90-90 UNAIDS targets.

The ambitious 90-90-90 seeks to have 90 percent of all people living with HIV knowing their HIV status by 2020, 90 percent of all people with diagnosed HIV infection receiving sustained antiretroviral therapy, while 90 percent of all people receiving ART having viral suppression.

“HIV drug resistance is fast becoming a threat and besides changing first-line drugs, there is urgent need for a more holistic approach, which includes changing of drugs in people who are no longer responding to treatment.

“The longer it takes to respond to the increasing levels of HIV drug resistance, the more severe the consequences in HIV-related deaths and new infections, and this will also have huge implications on ART programmes.”

In his study entitled: “High levels of pre-treatment HIV drug resistance in South Africa”, Chimukangara noted that the increase in HIV drug resistance cases gives rise to the need of having routine HIV drug resistance surveys.

“With approximately 1 in 5 of all people receiving ART globally residing in South Africa, the country has the greatest HIV/AIDS burden, and largest ART program globally.

“However, the success of the ART program is greatly threatened by development of HIV drug resistance. A study was done to assess levels of HIV drug resistance in treatment naïve adult patients from South Africa.

“Over 6000 sequences from studies published between 2000 and 2016 were obtained and analysed for surveillance drug resistance mutations. The pooled annual prevalence of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor drug resistance (NNRTI) increased from less than 5 percent in 2009 to a peak of 10 percent by 2014.

“This is critical considering the WHO’s recommendation for urgent public health action in replacing NNRTIs in first-line regimens, once NNRTI PDR levels reach 10 percent. Such high levels of pre-treatment drug resistance in treatment naïve people could be due to transmissions from people that continue to receive non-suppressive ART,” read part of his study.

Chimukangara believes the solution for Zimbabwe and South Africa lies in conducting routine HIV surveillance and monitoring, in order to identify such outcomes more rapidly, while noting that successful treatment of HIV requires unwavering commitment from ART patients to take their medication as prescribed by their health care professionals.

Two out of 30 HIV-positive people on ART in Zimbabwe have shown signs of resistance to the commonly used and affordable drugs, Efavirenz and Nevirapine according to the WHO.

WHO defines HIV drug resistance as the ability of HIV to mutate and reproduce itself in the presence of antiretroviral drugs with its consequences including treatment failure and further spread of drug resistant HIV.

This can compromise the effectiveness of the limited therapeutic options to reach the last 90 target (of achieving viral suppression) and further reduce HIV incidence, mortality and morbidity.

The WHO is developing a five-year action plan for 2017-2021 to support coordinated international effort to prevent, monitor and respond to the emergence of HIV drug resistance while strengthening global efforts to achieve HIV targets.

KAMURIWO RALLIES ZDF SELECT

Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE Defence Forces Select coach Gift “Guava” Kamuriwo has warned his charges against treating their Malawian counterparts lightly if they are to win the ZDF trophy at the National Sports Stadium this afternoon.

The match will bring down the curtain on the commemorations of the 38th anniversary of the ZDF at the giant facility.

Organisers of the annual event have always included a football match to be part of the celebrations and have alternated between local clubs and regional defence force teams.

This year, they have settled for the Malawians and the match is expected to be explosive.

Kamuriwo, who has previously participated in such matches, has the responsibility to lead the local defence forces against their Malawians counterparts. And the Black Rhinos coach believes their opponents could surprise them if his men are not careful.

He said there are no small teams in the modern game and although on the few occasions the teams have met, the Zimbabweans have emerged victorious, a lot has changed and his team needs to be careful.

“There is no room to treat our opponents lightly,’’ he said.

“This is our first time to play against the Malawi Defence Forces in recent years and we don’t know how they play.

“But we have prepared well for the duel. My team is ready, the players are eager to prove they are worth their salt. We have nine players from Chapungu and as many from Black Rhinos.

“These players were selected on merit and the starting team will also be selected on merit.

“We have the whole nation behind us and we cannot afford to disappoint in front of the fans.

“I have a team which I believe can deliver the goods. I am confident that they will deliver. Most of these players were in action over the weekend and they haven’t rested enough but in this age and time it’s very common to have matches in a short space of time.

“Actually, the fact that these players participated in the league for their respective clubs can give us an advantage as they already have the momentum.’’ He saluted the players’ fitness levels.

“I had no big issues at training as the players are already fit. I was only working on the combinations. I hope the players will gel.

“But some of the players have at one point played in the same team and I hope that will help us achieve our goals.

“I am confident the team will win and help us celebrate our day in a special way,” said Kamuriwo.

The ZDF Select side go into this match as holders after they beat Highlanders 3-0 in last year’s final at the same venue.

SHARP SHOOTERS SHOW . . . Mushekwi comes face-to-face with Congolese hitman

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
HIGH-FLYING Zimbabwe international forward Nyasha Mushekwi takes his goal-scoring spree to the Chinese capital Beijing today where he will come face-to-face with the most expensive African footballer of all-time, Cedric Bukambu, in a possible rehearsal of their AFCON showdown in October.

The 30-year-old Mushekwi was the toast of the Chinese Super League on Friday when he scored a stunning hat-trick as he led his club Dalian Yifang to a 3-0 demolition of Guangzhou R&F in a league match at the Dalian Sports Centre.

That took Mushekwi’s tally to seven goals, half the number of goals which leading scorer Wu Lei of China has scored, but considering that the Zimbabwean was overlooked by his team’s former coach, at the beginning of the season, this has been a remarkable return for the giant striker.

Nigeria’s World Cup striker Odion Ighalo, who left English Premiership side Watford to move to Changchun Yatai because of the massive financial pickings in the Chinese Super League, is second on the goalscorers’ charts with 12 goals.

Bukambu, the 26-year-old Congolese forward, is in third place with 11 goals for Beijing Guoan, after he became the most expensive African player of all time when the Chinese side paid £65 million (about $87 million) to get him away from Spanish giants Villarreal.

Born in France but a member of the Congolese side that will battle the Warriors in back-to-back AFCON qualifiers on October 10 in Kinshasa and three days later in Harare, Bakambu rejected bids from English Premiership sides Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham to move to the Chinese Super League.

Beijing Guoan met his Villarreal release clause of £35 million (about $44,6 million) and then paid the Chinese football association £30 million (about $38,25 million) in taxes to complete the deal for the highly-rated Congolese hitman.

Bakambu then agreed a long-term deal that is earning him

The 26-year-old has agreed a long-term contract worth a reported £307 000 (about $391 000) a week at the Chinese club who take on Mushekwi’s Dalian Yifang in Beijing today in the latest round of the country’s top-flight league matches.

Bakambu’s transfer from Villarreal eclipsed £39 million ($49,71 million) which English Premiership giants Liverpool splashed on Mohamed Salah, the African Footballer of the Year, to get him from Italian club Roma.

The Congolese striker turned himself into box-office attraction when he scored 48 goals in 105 games for Villarreal in 2015 after he arrived on a cheap transfer of £6,5 million (about $8,28 million) from Turkey when he had scored 21 goals.

Given the physical nature of the Congolese players, both in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, some local pundits have been calling for Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambwa to consider Mushekwi, who is a bustling forward, for the AFCON battles in September and October.

And the forward has been letting his goals do all the talking with his latest hat-trick against Guangzhou R&F another demonstration of his quality with the Zimbabwean striker scoring in the 35th, 56th and 82nd minute in the 3-0 win.

Mushekwi appears to be benefiting from the artistry and vision of Belgian World Cup star Yannick Carrasco who has been in good form since returning from Russia where he helped his country win the bronze medal.

The 24-year-old Carrasco was part of the star-studded Belgian side that eliminated Brazil from the World Cup and ended their contest with a 2-0 win over England in the battle for third place.

He has 30 caps for Belgium and five goals for his country and, in Russia, he played in four matches for the Belgians, spending 239 minutes on the pitch, covering a distance of 28,8km with 12.4km being covered while in possession, had six attempts on target with four on target while two were off target.

Carrasco sprayed 75 passes at the World Cup, with 62 of them being completed passes, 20 were short, 39 where medium range and the rest were long range passes.

He has taken his World Cup form to his Chinese club and he provided two of the assists as Mushekwi grabbed his hat-trick last Friday.

Dalian Yifang remains in relegation danger, after a poor start that forced the management to fire the coach, a development which opened a window for Mushekwi to revive his romance with the team after being left on the sidelines by the previous coach.

The Zimbabwean was even considered for sale but the fans, who still remember the way he starred in helping the team get promoted into the Super League, piled the pressure on their management not to effect the sale.

And when the club changed coaches, with German gaffer Bernd Schuster, who guided Real Madrid to the La Liga title 10 years ago, taking over the hot seat, Mushekwi was thrust back into the team and he has been repaying his coach with goals.

The Zimbabwean has been on a good run and also scored in the 1-0 win over Shanghai SIPG, probably his side’s best result this season, 10 days ago with his strike the only goal in a match in which Dalian Yifang upstaged the club that has the likes of Oscar and Hulk of Brazil on their payroll.

Mushekwi is certainly in tough company in the Chinese Super League but he has been showing he can compete against some of the best players in the world with his goals giving Dalian Yifang hope they could find a way to avoid relegation this season.

His combination with Carrasco has been impressive with the Belgian World Cup player also taking to social media to salute the Zimbabwean for his goals for Dalian Yifang in recent days.

The fans have also been coming in their numbers for Dalian Yifang and more than 35 000 watched Mushekwi score his hat-trick last Friday.

Most of them will be hoping that he takes his remarkable goal-scoring form, which also saw him score in the recent 2-3 defeat to Tianjin Teda, to the capital today for his showdown against Bakambu and his teammates.

Rusawo Seeks Redemption

Out-of-favour Black Rhinos goalkeeper Herbert Rusawo has been handed a huge opportunity to prove his worthy as he is set to guard the posts for the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Select in the military men’s ZDF Trophy battle against their Malawian counterparts at the National Sports Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The match will wind off the day for the 38th edition of the ZDF Day’s main commemorations at the giant facility.

The former Warriors man, who illuminated the local scene last season when he kept 13 clean sheets in 31 league appearances for the army side has been relegated to the bench by mentor Herbert Maruwa who prefers Ashley Reyners.

Rusawo has never reclaimed his place between the sticks since losing it to the ex-Dynamos goalie in the fifth week of the league marathon which is now in week 21. But, the 29-year old will be eager to showcase his exploits at a bigger stage this afternoon.

ZDF Select coach Gift “Guava” Kamuriwo has picked nine players from the combatants’ two Premiership sides, Chapungu, who are the Air Force of Zimbabwe’s flagship side as well as the Zimbabwe National Army’s pride, Black Rhinos. Kamuriwo hinted yesterday that Rusawo could be thrust into the thick of things ahead of Chapungu’s Talbert Shumba, who played in his team’s 1-1 draw against Bulawayo Chiefs at Ascot just 48 hours ago.

He said he picked the best players from both teams who have the character to outwit their opponents.

The Malawians were expected to arrive in Harare last night.

“We have to win this match at all costs though we have no idea whatsoever how our opponents play,” said Kamuriwo.

“This is a special day for us as the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and we cannot afford to spoil the party by losing this match.

“We cannot disappoint on an occasion like this. I respect Malawian football and we are not going to go about it lackadaisically.

“We have to work extra hard because I bet we won’t have it on a silver platter. They are coming here with exactly the same motive as ours. Every team plays football not to lose so we have to be at our best.

Zimbabwe’s senior netball team get their campaign at the African Championships underway tomorrow with the hope of not only claiming the continental title, but also qualifying for the 2019 World Cup.

Seven countries, including high ranked Malawi who have already earned their place at the World Cup by virtue of their ranking, will square it off in Lusaka, Zambia, for the African netball showpiece that takes off today.

The event, doubling as the 2019 World Cup qualifier, begins with the hosts Zambia taking on Botswana this afternoon.

Zimbabwe then open their campaign with a game against Malawi tomorrow morning. They will then clash with Botswana late in the afternoon.

For Zimbabwe, the 2015 champions, qualifying for the World Cup has become their top priority and with powerhouses South Africa and Malawi already qualified, they believe the probability of making their maiden appearance at the world stage next year is high.

“I always say you need to be settled, you need to be stable mentally because netball is not only about running and jumping. You need to think and think fast and make a decision very fast. And that way we are going to win.

“And you should have confidence in yourself that you are able to do it, you are able to play just like the next person. There is no need to look down upon themselves. I am sure we are going to give our opponents a tough time.

“The intention is to go and play and win the Africa Championship and on top of that qualify for the World Cup. The team is ready and geared to go and play. We have no injuries, we thank God. So I can assure you we are going to bring a gold medal,” said Dondo.

Dondo, who was in charge of the team for quite sometime and led the Gems to their first African title in 2015, said with a mixed team of seasoned and young players they are good to go.

Assistant coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki is satisfied with their state of preparedness for the event and said the presence of Dondo has been vital for both the technical team and players.

“This has helped the three of us, we worked together and came out with a strong team. Experience is important for the technical team and the players. We learnt a lot from her. She is good when it comes to the tactical side of things. So it really helped us.

“We are hoping to get results because looking at the fitness level of the team, it’s very high and their movement, which was a concern at first, is now okay. There has been a lot of improvement and their marking has also improved.

Substitute Tafadzwa Chitukutuku scored a quick-fire injury-time brace to rescue a point for spirited Herentals in their gripping Castle Lager Premiership soccer duel against Yadah at Rufaro yesterday.

Up until the first minute of the three added time, Yadah had this local derby under control as they were 2-0 to the good courtesy of Simbarashe Sithole and Willard Kalongonda’s goals earlier in either halves.

But Chitukutuku, returning from a long injury lay-off, took matters into his own hands, first poking home from close-range after Yadah defenders failed to clear their lines following a well-taken corner kick by Innocent Benza.

The duo combined again, a minute later, as Benza, who has now provided all assists in Herentals’ last three goals, lofted the ball onto the path of Chitukutuku who beat a drawn-out Yadah goalkeeper Stephen Chimusoro to complete his team’s dramatic comeback.

Both teams took their point-tallies to 26 and retained their positions on the log with Herentals on 10th place, one rung above Yadah due to a superior goal difference.

The Herentals bench celebrated the draw like a win and their elated coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva said indeed the draw felt like a victory considering it had to come at a time when he had virtually accepted his team’s fate.

“I kept on believing and crucially my players also refused to throw in the towel. They showed a lot of character and I would like to give it to them.

“Chitukutuku (Tafadzwa) is a very good player but I didn’t imagine he would rescue us the way he did especially considering that he is coming from injury.

“Innocent Benza also did well setting up Chitukutuku for the goals. It shows that he is a good player and to realise that he has been dishing these assists makes me feel confident to always consider throwing him into the thick of things always.

“It’s his magic that has been carrying most of our days.

“But, overall, the team did well and I would like to salute the lads for the never-say-die spirit they displayed all afternoon. It’s not that easy to trail by two goals with just three minutes of injury time remaining and still being able to crawl back and claim a point. It takes men of character to do that,” Mutiwekuziva said.

His opposite number Thomas Ruzive was disappointed by the lack of concentration on the part of his players especially defence.

“I am very disappointed by how we applied ourselves especially towards the end,” said Ruzive.

“I think my defenders went to sleep and lost concentration resulting in them conceding those two quick goals.

“We were supposed to grab all the three points out of this one but such is football.

We also missed a lot of clear-cut chances otherwise we should have wrapped up the match well before we conceded those two goals. But football is like that, we have to work on frailties like these going forward,” he said.

It’s Not So Hard for Zvirekwi

After mysteriously shrugging off a career-threatening injury to come back to the field of play not only with an amputated palm but with a cloud hanging over his head over agility concerns, CAPS United captain Hardlife Zvirekwi continues to prove that he is a larger-than-life figure, leading from the front to help his team register their first win in the second half of the Castle Lager Premiership soccer season over Black Rhinos on Saturday at Rufaro.

For a player whose footballing future appeared doomed following that horrific car accident, which left his palm severed before its subsequent amputation in March, to have reported for training within three months was some form of shocking news.

But not only did he attempt to come back to the game, but he successfully did so and coach Lloyd Chitembwe, whose faith in the 31-year-old is undoubted, recommended his registration for the second half of the Premiership marathon.

Having made an emotional bow against Harare City at Rufaro a couple of weeks ago after being introduced as a late substitute, Zvirekwi showed some glimpses of that old player who two years ago forced his way into that exclusive squad to join the likes of Shackman Tauro and George Shaya after he won the Soccer Star of the Year gong.

The Green Machine had gone for three matches in the second half of the season without not just winning but scoring and they needed to respond to keep pace with the leading pack.

Having lost one of their trusted gunslingers Simba Nhivi to Ngezi Platinum, all eyes were on the hardworking John Zhuwawu, who fluffed quite a couple of easy-to-score chances, as well as new acquisition Mitchel Katsvairo, who started on the bench.

Zvirekwi, however, took it upon himself three minutes into the match, making a perfect dummy-run to create space for Brian Muzondiwa who brilliantly cut back for his captain to tap-in what turned out to be the winning goal for CAPS United.

“I give it all to God and to my coaches, in fact to everyone for being there for me,” said Zvirekwi.

“It’s always a good feeling when a player scores, so I am naturally happy to have scored my first goal this season after coming back from injury.

“It’s not all about me though, as I have my teammates to credit for creating the chance for me. On that occasion when I scored, Brian Muzondiwa did well, weaving his way past a thicket of Black Rhinos defenders before laying the ball for me.

“We always train this at our training sessions, so what you saw is as a result of team effort right from our technical team.

“I am very happy for having been able to come back from a horrific injury which would have claimed my career, yet alone my life and being able to play the game I like the most.

“I will continue to work hard every day as I am trying to improve every time.

“I always want to thank my coaches for the faith they continue to put in me. That motivates me to want to do even better.

He also said Makepekepe need to keep pace between them and the leading pack if they are to finish the marathon on a decent position. “The leading pack are winning and we also have to win and see where we will be at the end of the season.

“I would like to thank my teammates who are supportive of me but I think it’s now time to forget whatever happened to me and focus on my goals as a player as well as our goals as a team.

“What matters now is the way forward and after finding the back of the net for the first time this season, I just hope I will maintain the form as I want to help my team achieve their set objectives.”

Zvirekwi has charmed the international community by merely bouncing back from that traumatic setback and he looks geared to set quite a number of records.

New Hornets coach wants to reclaim glory

Newly-appointed Harare City Hornets coach Samuel Mutsvanga is determined to help the team reclaim its status as the best basketball club in the country.

BY GARISH PHIRI

Mutsvanga was appointed to the post last month to replace Langton Moyo, who had finished last season on second position behind Foxes in the Harare Basketball Association (HBA) league.

The change in the technical department after such a solid season by the team was a clear message by the owners that they are not content with finishing second.

Hornets were champions in 2016 and Mutsvanga has been given a task of reclaiming the team’s past glory by dislodging champions Foxes when the HBA season kicks off on the first weekend of September.

“Hornets are one of the best teams in the league. Most of the players play in the national team, so the job is already half done with the experience that they have. I have strong players in the team, so what is left for me is to work with them and retain the league title” he said.

Mutsvanga, who has previously coached Zimbabwe at the Region 5 Games and Hustlers, is excited by the new challenge.

He is currently assessing the personnel at his disposal to see if it is good enough to bring him the success that his new job demands.

“First things first, I have to assess the players, understand the systems that they use so that it makes it easier for me to see which tactics to use. Maybe half way through the season, I might add one or two players to the team, but as for now I will make do with what is there” he said.

Mutsvanga took over from Moyo, who left the Harare City Council-owned team last month after a hugely successful two-year spell during which he won the national championships and some international tournaments.

City Hornets chairman Sunny Mbofana said they were happy that they managed to persuade Mutsvanga into their ranks, who will be assisted by Tapuwa Mangunyana and Mike Nhira.

Billiat should be playing in Europe: Coach

KAIZER Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas believes that Warriors star Khama Billiat may have made a mistake by choosing to join the South African premier league side over European opportunities.

BY HENRY MHARA

Khama Billiat shields the ball away from Free State Stars’ Nyiko Mobbie during the 2018 MTN8 match on Saturday

The winger left Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of June and was a subject of intense interest from clubs across Europe and Asia.

His manager Mike Ngobeni was recently quoted as saying his client had received offers from Sweden, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Egyptian giants Zamalek were also said to have made a lucrative offer, which Billiat turned down.

Surprisingly, the talented attacker chose to sign for Kaizer Chiefs where he is reportedly earning more than anyone else in the South African premier league.

Solinas, who joined at the start of the season, just like Billiat, is equally shocked by his forward’s decision. After watching the player in action in the few matches that he has played, the Italian is convinced that Billiat’s talents should be showcased somewhere in Europe.

“For me‚ Billiat is an amazing player‚ a top player. In my opinion‚ with no disrespect to other players from other clubs‚ Billiat is the best player in the league. The best striker. Billiat in my opinion can play in Europe without a problem. This guy is not for this league. He could perform in Europe very well‚ comfortably,” Solinas said.

Billiat has started all of Kaizer Chiefs games this season, but he showed more signs of his class with a strong second-half performance in Chiefs’ 3-0 MTN8 quarterfinal win over Free State Stars at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

He scored the third goal in the comfortable win, combining well with his old Mamelodi Sundowns front partner Leonardo Castro, who had scored the second goal in the match.

The Colombian also had headed in Billiat’s free-kick in Chiefs’ 3-1 Absa Premiership defeat against Bidvest Wits at FNB on Wednesday night.

Solinas was asked about the growing influence of the promising Castro and Billiat combination at Amakhosi.

“Thank you very much for this question because you give me the opportunity to talk about Billiat and Castro. Billiat and Castro – it’s a privilege and an honour for me to coach them. And these players make the difference. So I am very happy that I have these players in my squad.”

Billiat’s strike was his first for Amakhosi, having played three games. He and Castro formed a part of the “CBD” trio at Downs – of Castro‚ Billiat and Keagan Dolly – who were so influential in the Brazilians’ 2015-16 league title.

London — Warriors striker Macauley Bonne has extended his stay with national league side Leyton Orient FC.

Macauley Bonne

In a statement, the club said: “The club is delighted to confirm that Macauley Bonne has agreed a new two-year contract.”

The Zimbabwe international scored 25 goals in all competitions for the Os last season following his summer move from Colchester United and opened his account for the 2018/19 season on Saturday with a brace against Barrow AFC and extends his stay in E10 until 2020.

The forward told leytonorient.com, that: “I’ve had the summer to sit down and talk to my family about it, and the right decision is to extend … It’s the feeling of being loved and wanted somewhere. It is the right decision to stay here and try and continue my performances this season.”

Head coach Justin Edinburgh said: “I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve secured Macauley for an extra year. First and foremost, I want to thank the chairman Nigel Travis and the board for resisting what were some serious offers for him through the summer.

“We were transparent with Macca and we told him we wanted to keep him and that he had unfinished business at the club and what has been refreshing has been his attitude, which has been first class and that has shown in his performances this season. I look forward to working with him into 2020.” – Leytonorientfc.com
