FC Platinum among Africa’s football royalty

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE Premiership kings, FC Platinum, will line up against, at least, nine former winners of the CAF Champions League when the draw for the group stages is held next week.

The platinum miners made a second successive appearance at the group stage after thumping Mozambican opponents UD Songo 5-2 aggregate in the second round.

Their compatriots Triangle are also on the brink of making the group stage in the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup after upsetting perennial campaigners Azam of Tanzania 2-0.

Triangle are set to meet one of the teams that dropped from the Champions League in a two-legged play-off.

The draw will be done simultaneously in Cairo, Egypt, where FC Platinum will line up among the giants of continental football.

The determination of the Champions League group stage entrants was completed at the weekend.

Lizwe Sweswe’s men have been perfect in the 2019 edition despite suffering the setback of losing head coach Norman Mapeza in the middle of the qualifying campaign.

Mapeza had steered them to a 3-2 win over Big Bullets before walking away from the club.

Still, they went on to beat UD Songo 1-0 at home two weeks ago and then completed a perfect double when they held their nerve in Beira on Saturday in a 4-2 win.

The draw, however, will be dominated by teams from the North African countries after Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia provided two teams each for the group stage.

Among the mini-league entrants are record eight-time African football kings Al Ahly of Egypt, holders Esperance of Tunisia, last year’s finalists and two-time African champions Wydad Casablanca of Morocco.

There are also winners of past competitions who include TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns (SA), Raja Casablanca (Morocco), JS Kabylie (Algeria) and DR Congo side AS Vita who won the old version of the competition back in 1973.

Angola also have two teams following the success of Petro Atletico and Primerio de Agosto, who played FC Platinum in the preliminary round last year.

DR Congo also have two clubs in TP Mazembe and AS Vita Club.

Five-time champions Zamalek of Egypt have one foot in the draw pending the boardroom determination of their controversial second leg tie against Generation Foot of Senegal which was abandoned at the weekend without a ball kicked.

Football secret behind Manyuchi’s recent success

Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter
NEW World Boxing Federation middleweight champion Charles Manyuchi spent the better part of last month playing football than in the boxing ring.

Manyuchi overcame Argentine Diego Diaz Gallardo, via a third round Technical Knock-Out, at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on Sunday morning.

But the former WBC silver welterweight holder spent close to a month on the football pitch than inside the ring.

His coach, Ali Phiri, revealed Manyuchi had to spend a significant period of time in football sessions to achieve balance and perfect leg movements. He was flawless in these aspects as he subdued his opponent.

“We camped for some time whereupon Manyuchi, along with other boxers from the Charles Manyuchi Academy, spent more of the time playing soccer,’’ said Phiri.

“Football is not just a game. It is both physical and mental. It helps boxers attain agility, strength, speed of execution due to pressure and above all focus.

“Good boxers do not just throw punches, they combine several motor skills to get a desired outcome.

“This is why we had to incorporate football into our training regime. It helped us a lot as Manyuchi was spot on.

“He had the endurance, he showed the ambition and retained maximum concentration to end the bout in the earliest possible time.

“When we were doing football lessons, the cardinal rule for either team (of boxers) was to score early goals. By so doing, it becomes mental and develops into a habit.

“This is why you saw Manyuchi, and even other boxers from the Charles Manyuchi Academy, looking determined to end their bouts early,” Phiri said.

Meanwhile, regional boxing legend Antony Mwamba of Zambia has hailed Zimbabwean boxers saying the country has potential to produce more world champions.

“I should start by congratulating Charles (Manyuchi) for this great win. He is surely back at his best and can actually do even better going forward.

“There is also something which I have just noted in Zimbabwean boxing.

“They are doing something very right. I was charmed by the boxers we watched in the ring today.”

Mapeza joins world’s most chaotic club

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
NORMAN Mapeza’s management team say their client’s interests have been safeguarded after the trailblazing gaffer took a huge gamble and plunged into the lion’s den, joining the world’s most turbulent football club.

The 47-year-old coach agreed to a three-year deal to coach South African Premiership side Chippa United, arguably the most chaotic football club in the world in terms of chopping and changing coaches, with more than 20 coaches having come and gone in the past six years.

The last coach in charge lasted just TWO games.

The longest-serving coach, Dan Maselela, was at the club for 402 days in which he took charge of 39 matches while Clinton Larsen, who was sacked this season, is the second longest-serving coach at the team after guiding them to 22 matches in 247 days.

Some of those who have been axed include Manqoba Mnqithi, Julius Dube, Roger Sikhakhane, who spent just 160 days, in which he took charge of 12 games.

The others are Wilfred Mugeyi, Farouk Adams, Ian Palmer, Vladmir Heric, Kosta Papic, Ernest Middendorp and Teboho Moloi. Middendorp is now in charge of Kaizer Chiefs.

Moloi lasted 170 days, taking charge of just 23 games, while the nomadic Mark Harrison, who has coached CAPS United and Harare City in the domestic Premiership, was only at Chippa United for 178 days and in charge of just 14 matches.

Joel Masutha lasted slightly over one month, 39 days to be precise, and guided the team for five games before the inevitable axe fell on him while Eric Tinkler stayed a bit longer, 102 days, and 10 matches in charge of the side.

Mapeza’s manager, Gibson Mahachi, told The Herald yesterday they had taken into consideration issues related to the huge turnover of coaches at Chippa United and came up with clauses, in the contract, that will guarantee the interests of the former FC Platinum gaffer.

“It’s one of the major things that we discussed and there were some clauses in the contract that we were not comfortable with because we felt that they would leave the coach exposed,’’ said Mahachi.

“We discussed those issues, including a clause where they had said they wanted to review the performance of the coach after three games, and we said that wasn’t feasible since the coach is coming into a side that already has players which he didn’t recruit and will need more time to understand the system and make decisions.

“They agreed to waive that and we also got some guarantees that protect the coach and, at the end of the day, we struck some agreement.

“The bottom line is that this is a result-oriented job and whichever way we look at it, whatever we say or want, the results have to be positive and we know that.

“Chippa United were intent that they wanted their man, they believe he suits perfectly into the kind of coach they were looking for, and it’s a chance for Norman to also go there and prove himself that he can make a difference.

“He is a young coach and has his ambitions and, at times, the best guys differentiate themselves from others by the way they are prepared to take risks, to go where others probably fear to go, and Norman is happy with the deal that has been offered and we have taken it.’’

Mahachi said it was Chippa United who made the first move because the club owner felt Mapeza could add real value to his team.

“They said they wanted the coach, because they believe he can bring value to the team, and we discussed a lot of things before we could commit themselves,’’ said Mahachi.

“We completed the deal from here in Harare and we have to wait for the paperwork to be conducted for Norman to then go and start his new job.’’

Reports in the South African media had suggested Mapeza was already in South Africa and was set to be in the stands last night to watch Chippa United battle Bidvest Wits in an ABSA Premiership match.

Mbuyiselo Sambu took charge of the team last night at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Businessman Siviwe Mpengesi, who owns the club, is known for his ruthless streak when it comes to the hiring and firing of coaches.

He is five years younger than Mapeza and arrived in Cape Town, at the age of 18, from his village in the Eastern Cape with not even a penny, nor an education, but only driven by his dreams.

Now, he is a millionaire businessman who has interests in waste management, trucking, print/mail, clothing, security and cleaning services and properties in Cape Town, East London and Johannesburg.

“We are happy to have a coach like Mapeza and we congratulate him. Not only is he highly experienced, but also he is highly regarded by colleagues in the football fraternity,” Mpengesi told Kickoff.com

“He brings a wealth of experience that will no doubt inspire the players and will take the team to greater heights.”

Former Chippa United coach, Masutha, who is now in charge of lower league side Real Kings, had also provided some advice this week to those interested in taking the job.

“You just need to go there with a laptop and the tracksuit you’re wearing, don’t bring anything else,” he told Kick.Off.com

Mapeza is no stranger to South African football after a short stint at Ajax Cape Town during the 2005/2006 season.

But, the gaffer, who won three league championships on the domestic front (two with FC Platinum and one with Monomotapa), has never been at a club as turbulent as Chippa United.

Even some of the players at the team have been coming out now to reveal that the frequent changes in their dressing room were affecting their performance.

“It’s really affecting us. You could see our performance especially in the first half, the way we were playing, players are down, we are not okay, we also feel that pain,” Andile Mbenyane, the most experienced player in the team, said.

Mapeza will become the second Zimbabwean coach in Super Diski with Kaitano Tembo doing well at SuperSport United who will play in the MTN8 Cup final on Saturday in Soweto.

Nakamba runaway winner as Zim fans flood Villa poll

Senior Sports Editor
ZIMBABWEAN football fans bombarded the Aston Villa official Twitter page and left Marvelous Nakamba a runaway winner in the poll for the man-of-the-match award for the English Premiership match against Burnley on Saturday.

The game ended 2-2.

Nakamba, who has forced his way into the starting XI at Villa after being given time to recover from the knock he received at the AFCON finals and also get himself into shape, was a clear winner of the poll with 57 percent of the vote.

Scotsman John McGinn, who scored for the Birmingham club on Saturday, came second in the poll with 38 percent of the vote.

Dutchman Anwar El Ghazi, who clipped Villa into the lead, finished last with just 2 percent of the vote, just behind Matty Target who had a 3 percent share of the poll.

A number of Zimbabwean football fans went onto the Villa official Twitter page to cast their vote, but to be fair, Nakamba was outstanding on the afternoon, a good number of others also voted for him.

Journalist Liam Bryan of SBNation had also named the Zimbabwean enforcer as his outstanding player during the match.

“It was another disappointing result at the true home of English football as Burnley came back twice from a goal down to draw with Aston Villa, a game that Dean Smith’s side should have realistically won,’’ Bryan wrote.

“One of the star men who marshalled the midfield throughout the fixture was my Man-of-the-Match Marvelous Nakamba.

“The Zimbabwean was a pivotal figure in Dean Smith’s side with the midfielder consistently pressuring Burnley in possession and for the majority of the time successfully intercepting the ball.

“With the club only spending £11 million on the 25-year-old from Club Brugge, Nakamba has completely re-energised the midfield with his tenacity and artfulness impressing the Villa faithful and if he continues to make an impression on a consistent basis then he could become one of the most important players in the squad.’’ The Birmingham Mail were also impressed by Nakamba.

“Neat and tidy once again, possesses a pinging cross-field pass and hammered a couple out to John McGinn and then El Ghazi. Villa’s insurance policy and broke up the play.

“A tidy, tidy player in the middle of the park but imposed himself less as Villa chased for a winner,’’ they said as they gave him a rating of seven out of 10.’’

And, this is what others said:

Adam Theofilatos

“The man is a machine. A joy to watch!!’’

Emmerson Shongwe

“I keep refreshing to check the results. Now the Nakamba Cruise is in the waters. Let’s go sailing.’’

Rich Smith

“Marvellous didn’t put a foot wrong… the man was the best player on the pitch 10/10, McGinn is a 9 or 10/10 every game.’’

Zach Hart

“McGinn for me. Nakamba a close second. Cool head on Nakamba but McGinn just didn’t stop running or tackling.’’

‘’Nakamba was reliable and played the right passes as the right time. He pushed play forward, but always safely.’’

‘’@AVFCOfficial is a Zimbabwean football club operating in England all majority Zimbabweans will vote for Nakamba.’’

Liam Bryan

‘’If even he doesn’t play, everyone from #Zimbabwe will still vote for him, for the best good looking substitute.’’

Williams fires Zim to win

SINGAPORE. — Sean Williams was not a happy man as he was presented the Man of the Match trophy on Sunday.

Singapore had upset Zimbabwe, winning their first game against a Test nation, and doing so after falling way behind in the game.

Williams berated himself for staying at the wicket long enough to finish that game and questioned his team’s mental strength after they spurned the upper hand against such an inexperienced team.

Faced with the same odds yesterday, when they faced Nepal, who too have been making a lot of waves on their way up to international cricket, Zimbabwe began poorly once again, slipping to 38 for 3 in five overs.

But out walked captain Williams and by sheer force of will took control of the game.

He hit 53 off 35 balls with four fours and three sixes to drag Zimbabwe up to 160 for 6 and that was plenty more than enough.

Williams, himself, was the one ensuring that, taking the new ball and striking in the very first over.

His left-arm spin took care of both Nepal openers and by the time he took his third wicket in four overs, the opposition was 111 for 8, way off their target with time running out.

After securing their second win in three matches, Zimbabwe, who have sent a largely developmental side, are now back on top the T20 tri-series table and will face Singapore again tomorrow — Cricinfo.

Vincent for Taiwan Open

ZIMBABWE’S sole representative in the Asian Tour, Scott Vincent, will be back in action at the Mercuries Taiwan Open at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club tomorrow.

Vincent is receiving rave reviews on the Asian Tour where he is sitting in seventh place on the order of merit.

He has so far taken part in 10 tournaments since the season began and will line up, from the first tee, alongside Hung Chien-yao and Steve Lewton.

The 26-year-old Vincent finished third at the Shinhan Donghae Open two weeks ago.

He then finished in 34th place last week at the Panasonic Open Golf championships.

Vincent will be part of the more than 120 players who will take part in the high-profile tournament backed by the Mercuries Group.

The Mercuries Taiwan Masters is the last qualifying event for the lucrative CJ Cup and WGC-HSBC Champions in Korea and China. The Mercuries Taiwan Masters, which was inaugurated in 1987, has been held annually on the region’s premier Tour since 2004.

The event offers an all-time high US$900,000 prize money in 2019, a US$50,000 increase from last year.

Former Royal Harare resident professional, Adison da Silva, is the defending champion.

“The win last year was absolutely stunning. Especially when I wasn’t really playing well before that,’’ he said.

‘‘I was practicing really hard and nothing was coming along. So, I was doubting myself and I just told myself to try my best as I know the course suits me.

“On the last day, I kept telling myself to stay in the present and play one shot at the time and just don’t get too ahead of myself.

“Over the years, I’ve found a way of playing this course. There’s going to be lots of swirling winds and you just have to trust what you are doing.’’

Tonderai Ndiraya psyches up his troops

Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter
DYNAMOS coach Tonderai Ndiraya has warned his charges against treating relegation-haunted Yadah lightly in their Castle Lager Premiership football battle at Rufaro this afternoon.

The Glamour Boys have gone for 11 games in the league, without defeat, but come into this tie a dejected lot.

They exited the Chibuku Super Cup in the first round following a 0-1 loss to bitter rivals Highlanders at the same venue on Sunday.

Ndiraya spent the past two days trying to psyche up his troops after a flat performance on Sunday. The DeMbare gaffer is worried his players could be tempted to underrate the basement side.

“I think what is important, in every situation, is to recover from setbacks like that,’’ said Ndiraya.

“We have forgotten about that (the defeat to Bosso).

“I think we have been given an instant chance to correct our mistakes and make our supporters happy.

“We just have to concentrate on the league, most importantly, the game tomorrow (today).

“The game against Yadah is very key to us considering what happened on Sunday. Of course, the players are a little bit down, in terms of their psychology, but we have spoken over about it.

“I expect them to push a little bit up and do the job for the team.”

Ndiraya said Yadah players have more top-flight experience than his greenhorns, most of whom are in their first year in the Premiership.

“Yadah are in the relegation zone but they have a very good team, that’s my honest opinion about them,’’ said Ndiraya.

“They have good experienced players.

“They have experience in every department. Look at their first eleven, they have just been unfortunate but I think on a good day they can beat any team.

“I have watched them in many games, they have been playing good football. We are not taking them lightly. They deserve to be taken seriously.

“Look, they posted a very huge result in Triangle the last time out so we cannot afford to take them lightly.”

The former Ngezi Platinum Stars mentor said his troops should play for their supporters who have rallied behind them despite an average season.

“Our supporters come first. They are the ones who drive us. We need to play for them and win for them.

“Look, they are always behind us even if the chips are down.”

Casemiro late header rescues Real Madrid

MADRID. – Casemiro’s late header rescued Real Madrid from an embarrassing defeat at home to Club Brugge last night as Zinedine Zidane’s side came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw.

Madrid were run ragged in the first half by a brilliant Brugge and their speedy striker Emmanuel Dennis, who scored twice at the Santiago Bernabeu and should have completed his hat-trick shortly after the interval.

Instead, Madrid came storming back as Sergio Ramos headed in, before Casemiro claimed a dramatic equaliser in the 85th minute, seconds after Brugge’s Ruud Vormer had been sent off for a second yellow card.

After losing 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain two weeks ago in what was Zidane’s worst ever loss as coach, Madrid will be relieved to have avoided another defeat that would have left them facing their first ever group-stage exit in this competition.

But there were no celebrations at the final whistle from those in white shirts after a chaotic performance checked any morale and momentum gained following three consecutive victories in La Liga.

Madrid’s fans whistled the players off at half-time and Zidane reacted by making two changes, replacing Nacho with Marcelo and his goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with Alphonse Areola, thrown on for an unforgiving debut.

Gareth Bale was fit but rested, although it was unclear why the Welshman was not even on the bench.

With three goals in his last five games, Bale might have been a useful option in the second half.

Madrid looked vulnerable to the counter-attack from the start and after nine minutes they were punished.

Two close offside calls went Brugge’s way as Percy Tau was played on by Ramos and then Dennis stayed level with Raphael Varane.

The finish was even more fortunate, the ball cannoning off Dennis’ right foot and rebounding off his left, before rolling agonisingly past the wrong-footed Courtois.

Luka Modric wanted a penalty for a clumsy challenge by Clinton Mata and then fired wide after a pull-back from Dani Carvajal.

In between, a sluggish Eden Hazard weaved through but lacked the acceleration, or perhaps confidence, to finish the run. It was symptomatic of his night.

Modric, forceful at one end, was then careless at the other as he was robbed by Dennis, who tore beyond the Madrid defence.

With only Courtois to beat, Dennis stumbled again but kept his footing to dig out a lifted finish up and into the net.

Zidane made the double change at halftime but Dennis should have had his hat-trick shortly after as Ramos gave the ball away only for Areola this time to shut down the shot.

Spared, Ramos then gave Madrid hope. Benzema chipped a cross to the back post where the defender, played onside by the left foot of Mata, headed down and in, VAR checking but allowing the goal to stand.

Brugge wavered and Madrid might have equalised when Modric blasted over, with a frustrated Benzema waiting inside him.

With six minutes to go, Vormer collected a second yellow card for a late lunge on the excellent Vinicius Junior and from the resulting free-kick, Madrid struck. – AFP.

Canada ready for All Blacks

TOKYO – Canada may be facing a hiding of historic proportions when they face the All Blacks today, but the amateur outfit are far from fazed by the prospect after taking time off work just to play in the Rugby World Cup.

According to coach Kingsley Jones, his amateurs in a professional world have “everything to gain and nothing to lose” against the three-time world champions.

“It’s a huge achievement to be here for the team and now we’re here we’ve got to be as competitive as we can,” he said.

At the top end of the World Cup scale are the Six Nations and Rugby Championship nations, with fully employed rugby professionals earning top dollar and playing year-round.

At the other end is former Wales international Jones, scrambling to get his Canadian side together for a brief period at rugby’s showcase event.

“Some of them had to compromise their jobs,” he said on the eve of Wednesday’s game against the All Blacks match in Oita, southern Japan.

“Nick Blevins, who played 12 the other night, he runs a business, a vegan food chain, and he’s had to take three months out and pay people to replace him.

“There’s also Gordon McRorie, the nine, he works in HR. His employers have been good but they can’t give people three, four months off, so there are players who (have) the extra strain of leaving the job.”

For Jones, who has made a career out of rugby as a professional player and now as coach, he was stunned by what confronted him when he took left the Pro 14 Dragons in 2017 to coach Canada.

“It was a real eye-opener to see some of the challenges around getting players released” from their day jobs, he said, adding it compounded the difficulty of competing in the regional Americas Rugby Championship which runs over three months.

“Players simply can’t do it. They’ve got families, they’ve got jobs.”

The Canadians, who were whipped 79-15 the last time they faced the All Blacks at the 2011 World Cup, are undaunted at the prospect of an even bigger scoreline in Oita.

They also don’t agree that blowouts between the top sides and the minnows are bad for the game.

“It’s an opportunity to measure ourselves against a great team and great players,” said Jones, who believes his side will put up a better showing than they did first up in Japan against Italy when beaten 48-7.

For captain Tyler Ardron, the game was all about showing improvement.

“I only know how to approach a game one way and it’s the same I’ve done it ever since I started playing rugby. We review the last game and try to fix up things we did not well and we just try to get better,” he said.

“We are just going to try to put a performance in that we are proud of.” -AFP.

THE Zimbabwe men’s marathon team arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Monday ahead of their race this weekend at the ongoing IAAF World Championships.

Coach Lisimati Phakamile said they expect them to post some good times although it’s going to be tough considering the tough conditions in Qatar.

The trio of Munyaradzi Jari, Isaac Mpofu and Ngonidzashe Ncube will represent the country in the men’s marathon on Saturday night.

The other two athletes for Team Zimbabwe, Rutendo Nyahora and Chengetayi Mapaya, were in action last Friday.

Nyahora finished in 21st place in the women’s marathon and triple jumper Mapaya was 25th overall after leaping 16.36m.

“For the men, we are expecting them to fight hard to improve their personal best times, make a name for themselves at the elite stage and also try to be among the top 10 finishers to (automatically) qualify for Tokyo Olympic Games,’’ said Phakamile.

“But the weather this side is extremely bad, we can’t judge by their qualifying times but, maybe, the strength of the runners.”

The national association are pinning their hopes on Nyahora and Mapaya to qualify for the Olympics after posting encouraging performances last Friday.

“Rutendo performed extremely well under the conditions in Doha,’’ said Phakamile.

“She finished 21st but the performance indicated very good strength and potential for more positive results to come.

“We are very positive that she will definitely qualify for Tokyo.

“Chengetayi faces a tough competition, as it was his first time at the big stage, he tried his best but because of the limited attempts he got he could not fully get to his top form.

“We still have high hopes as well for his qualification for Tokyo.’’

Mapeza’s Chippa Utd adventure

Grace Chingoma Senior Sports Reporter
NORMAN MAPEZA’S manager, Gibson Mahachi, says the Chippa United move is an adventure his client is willing to take as part of challenging himself.

Mapeza signed a three-year contract with the Port Elizabeth-based South African Premiership club yesterday.

Many local football fans took to Twitter expressing their concerns over the high-risk move.

Chippa owner, Siviwe “Chippa’’ Mpengesi, has a habit of hiring and firing coaches.

“We have been negotiating for the past one week,’’ said Mahachi. “It is one of those opportunities that the coach wanted to explore.

“Any coaching job is a challenge, when you start coaching, you don’t know when you will get fired.

“All the clubs fire coaches, some after one week, a year, or two years but the bottom line is once one is hired he will get fired one day.

“He is ready to start new things, in a new environment. In life you have to fall down to stand up.’’

Mapeza is expected to leave for South Africa soon to sort out his paperwork.

The coach parted ways with the Zvishavane side last month after indicating he wanted to take a break from football.

He had been in charge of the mining club for five years.

Darlington Dodo rallies his men

Takudzwa Chitsiga Sports Reporter
CAPS United coach Darlington Dodo says his men should keep their eyes on the ball in their quest for their main target of winning the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship.

The Green Machine host Triangle at National Sports Stadium this afternoon.

Makepekepe crashed out of the Chibuku Super Cup on Saturday, losing on penalties to Harare City, and now shift their focus to the league.

“We need to quickly forget about the past defeat and focus on work at hand, the game against Triangle,’’ said Dodo.

“We know they are doing well on the continental stage but this will be a different game.

“We need to remain within shouting distance and we cannot afford to lose another match.

“The boys have been training hard and I believe we are ready for the encounter, playing at home will come with its advantages as we will have our 12th man in the form of our supporters.’’

CAPS United fans came in numbers for the league match against Harare City at Rufaro, which the Green Machine won 1-0.

However, the turnout for the Chibuku Super Cup was small, as if to emphasise the fans want the league title.

Triangle have been doing well in the CAF Confederation Cup but, of late, have been finding the going tough at home.

Their home defeat at the hands of Yadah Stars illustrated their recent struggles on the domestic front. However, they have a tendency of rising to the occasion, when they come up against the traditional giants. In Russell Madamombe skipper Ralph Kawondera, Collins Dhuwa and the exciting Timothy January, the Lowveld side have a number of players who can make a difference.

THE Zimbabwe Defence Forces team will on Monday leave for Wuhan, China, for the annual World International Military Sports Council Games from October 15-18.

Speaking at a send-off ceremony for the 42-member team, Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Philip Valerio Sibanda, said the team should represent the country well and bring back medals.

“You are lucky to be part of this team, considering the level of competitiveness that is required for one to qualify,’’ said Sibanda.

“We would have liked to have more sporting disciplines, but it was difficult for us, I hope in the next edition we will have a larger contingent. But, in terms of participants, this is the largest contingent as we are always improving yearly.’’ Zimbabwe will host the 2020 international golf tournament in Victoria Falls.

“We are all aware that we will be hosting the International golf tournament at Elephant Hills next year and it’s you who will attract players at events like CISM,’’ said Sibanda.

“You cannot be in a competition to be a loser and we are looking forward to seeing you coming out with good results.

“The Games are aimed at building friendship through sport and that is what we expect from you,” said Sibanda.

Zimbabwe will be represented in three sporting disciplines — golf, which will have nine players, 14 boxers and 13 athletes.

Bamusi, Dodo’s enduring romance

THEIRS is a football romance that has refused to die.

Nine years ago, Phineas Bamusi (pictured) was plucked from the streets of Sakubva by Darlington Dodo who gave him his first test of Premiership football with Gunners.

Now, the two have reunited at a CAPS United side chasing the league title.

“Coach Dodo brought me to Gunners in 2010. He played a very big role in my career,” said Bamusi.

“As a small boy coming from Mutare, he showed confidence in me and signed me at Gunners when I was only 19.

“He helped me a lot in those early days. I remember he gave me my first Premiership match against Blue Ribbon at Lafarge which ended 2-2. It was a good feeling, the experience eye-opening.

“He is a father figure to me. He has always supported me. Even when he was coaching elsewhere, he always sought to support me.’’

Dodo was appointed Makepekepe head coach two months ago, replacing his former boss Lloyd Chitembwe.

“When the season started, we said we wanted to be champions and with nine games to go I think we have a good advantage,’’ said Bhamusi.

“We are five points clear and we are not putting ourselves under any pressure. I think we have done well as a team to be where we are at this stage.

“It’s not easy playing for an institution like CAPS United. It’s very demanding.

“The supporters and everyone associated with the club want results no matter what.’’

Bamusi was born and bred in Mutare.

He went to Rujeko Primary School, St Dominics Secondary and Mutare Boys High for his Advanced Level.

He began his football career at Mutare United in 2009. He joined Gunners the following year and in 2012 went back to Mutare, where he spent a season with Buffaloes.

He joined Harare City in 2013, before his first stint with CAPS United from mid-2015, where he won the title the following year.

He left briefly to join Triangle and inspired the Sugar Sugar Boys to their first silverware when they won the Chibuku Super Cup.

Netball problems need urgent redress

Ellina Mhlanga Sports Reporter

AFTER an impressive maiden World Cup appearance in July, there was optimism that the Liverpool experience would inspire network on the domestic front.

However, it appears, differences over governance issues and the way the sport is being run by the Zimbabwe Netball Association are threatening to derail the progress the sport had made.

Last month, various stakeholders submitted a petition to the Sports Commission over the way the national association was running the sport. Sports Commission acting director-general Charity Nyamayedenga, in a statement released yesterday, said they were now compiling a report to be submitted to the Board. “Upon getting the submissions from Zina, we are now in the process of compiling a report which we will submit to the board for their consideration and guidance.

“We remain committed to ensuring that Zina addresses the concerns raised by its stakeholders for the benefit of netball and our view is that there is need for Zina to leverage on the gains from the Vitality Netball World Cup held in July this year,’’ said Nyamayedenga.

Magaya dangles Yadah carrot

YADAH owner, prophet Walter Magaya, appears keen to see his team stay another season in the Premiership after he dangled a carrot on his boys in their battle for survival.

Magaya recently visited the players and promised bonuses and improved remuneration if they stayed in the league.

The Miracle Boys, who play defending champions FC Platinum at Mandava this afternoon, had gone for 10 games, over about three months, without winning a league game.

But, they have now won two and drawn one of their last three games.

They have beaten Triangle and Ngezi Platinum and drawn against Dynamos.

“The welfare side of the players has been addressed,’’ coach Genesis Mangombe said.

“The prophet talked to the players. The chairman (Evans Chatambudza) was there as well, as were the other members of the executive. We all agreed on the importance of playing Premiership football and it was also agreed that there will be improved bonuses and better remuneration if the team managed to survive the chop. So, the boys are on it.’’

Earlier this season, Magaya sent a signal he would dispose of the franchise because of the challenges it was facing.

“We need to be winning our games,’’ said Mangombe. “However, it will not be easy playing away against opponents of FC Platinum’s stature. They are the champions, they are a big team compared to us.’’

There is going to be an exciting contest at Rufaro this afternoon where Harare City and Mushowani fight to avoid the chop.

“By now, I was thinking we could have been somewhere but, unfortunately, it’s not just working,’’ said City coach, Lloyd Chitembwe.

‘’But I believe we have it in our locker. We just have to make sure that we change things.’’

Jonny consulted a local sangoma, George provided the drama, back in the Summer of ’69

Robson Sharuko on Saturday

THEY were born just three years apart, one of them died in 2004, but the other one still lives, an amputated leg just another reminder of the ravages of a life lived in football’s fast lane.

Fifty years ago, fate brought them together, on opposite teams, in the only World Cup qualifier, in history, which needed three matches to decide the winner.

Johnny Warren captained that Australian side, George Shaya was the emerging star of his national team.

The Mozambican coastal capital, Maputo, provided the neutral venue, and the Indian Ocean, provided the spectacular backdrop.

The men from Down Under won, finally defeating their plucky opponents 3-1 in the third game, after the first two matches had ended in draws.

Next month, it will be 50 years since those battles were fought.

Johnny was known as “Captain Socceroo,” featured in his country’s first World Cup in Germany in 1974 and, after his retirement, became a coach and television commentator.

He also turned into football’s greatest ambassador, Down Under, leading the crusade for the game to have a mass appeal among reluctant Aussies.

In 2004, at the age of 61, he died after losing his battle with cancer.

Just a year after his death, 83 000 fans poured into the Sydney Olympic Stadium to cheer the Socceroos, the Aussie national team, as they beat Uruguay to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals.

Journalist Chris Johnston captured the amazing sights and sounds of that landmark day in his report for The Age newspaper.

“There were a lot of poignant banners held aloft in the crowd of 83 000 in Sydney during that historic soccer game on Wednesday night,’’ he wrote.

“There was one that read, simply: ‘I TOLD YOU SO.’

“It quoted — and paid tribute to — Australian soccer’s greatest ambassador, Johnny Warren.

“Warren championed Australian soccer like a missionary (and) famously cried on national television when the team failed to qualify (for the ’98 World Cup) when it lost to Iran in 1997.

“He demanded the game be called football, not soccer, because soccer was an ugly word and football was a beautiful game.’’

This year, the organisers of the A-League grand final between Perth Roar and Sydney FC had to erect extra makeshift seating to expand the 60 000-seater Optus Stadium in Perth because of the huge interest in that match.

And, just as Johnny had predicted, football had finally captured the imagination of the Aussies.

POOR GEORGE SHAYA CAN ONLY IMAGINE AS HE WATCHES FROM A DISTANCE

The Aussies have never forgotten their “Captain Socceroo.”

Today, his statue stands proudly outside the Sydney Olympic Stadium, itself a milestone in a country which, for years, was only obsessed with Aussie rules football, rugby and cricket.

They also named the prestigious award, given to the best footballer in Australian top-flight league every year, after him.

The diminutive Warrior whom Johnny played against in that World Cup qualifier in Maputo in ’69, George Shaya, was crowned Soccer Star of the Year at the end of that year.

That was the first time such an award had been handed out to honour this country’s best footballer.

He was only 23.

Over the next eight years, George won half of the eight Soccer Star of the Year awards, including three on the bounce in ’75, ’76 and ’77.

Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the first year George won the award.

In an ideal world, in honour of the Silver Jubilee of these awards, the first man to win it, and the only one to win it five times, would possibly have had his name given to this award.

How appropriate would it be, in the year that marks 50 years after our first appearance in a World Cup qualifier, that one of those pioneers should be honoured by having his name given to this award?

How special would it be that George would be there to see us honour him?

For him to see how much we appreciate he is one of us, how honoured we are he played for us and how happy we are such a football genius was born among us?

But, it’s unlikely to happen.

Because we are a people the Devil cursed, a people allergic to such fine stories like the one George wrote, a people obsessed with negativity, who would rather hear George died than that he lived to see his community honouring him.

A people driven by hate, who thrive in the darkness, a community that would rather fly to see the Aussies unveiling Johnny with a statute than be in Harare to see George being honoured with the Soccer Star of the Year being named after him.

No, that will give an impression he was the greatest Zimbabwean footballer of all time, which is debatable, I can hear some argue.

But Johnny wasn’t even the greatest Aussie footballer of all time, but they still honoured him.

No, we can’t do that to someone who didn’t play his football in Europe, because Freddie Mkwesha, Bruce Grobbelaar, Peter Ndlovu and Moses Chunga did, I can hear others argue.

But, even Johnny, whom the Aussies honoured, didn’t even play in Europe like the likes of Tim Cahill, the country’s all-time leading goal scorer.

However, still, his people Down Under found it befitting to honour him.

No, we can’t do that to someone whose football was not seen by anyone who were born after Independence, I can hear some of you argue, and — if he was that great — why did Braga choose Mkwesha instead of him?

But, even Johnny, whom the Aussies now idolise, was someone whose best years came in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

And, the United Trinity of George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton, whose statues stand proudly outside Old Trafford today, all owe it to what they did in the ‘60s.

The simple reality is we just have hate ourselves so much that if we were given a thorough medical examination by experts, it’s possible we would be recommended for specialist treatment to cure some of the mental disorders we now take for granted as being normal.

On Wednesday, I talked to some guys about Johnny and George, the difference in the way they have been treated, and was shocked by the dominant theme, from that conversation.

Players like George, they said, used a lot of juju rather than pure athleticism.

Okay, even if that was true, I asked them, did they know the so-called Aussie Curse of ’69?

JOHNNY CONSULTED A SANGOMA, GEORGE TOOK THE GONG, BACK IN THE SUMMER OF ’69

Well, after those two World Cup qualifying games in November ’69 had ended in draws, and a third decider was ordered by FIFA, the Socceroos were approached by a Mozambican journalist.

He told them they needed the services of a sangoma, who had the powers to curse George and his teammates, to help them win the decider.

“The reporter assured them the practice was common in Mozambique, and seeing no harm in giving it a shot, a group of players went to see the nyunga (sangoma),’’ Matt Neal, of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, wrote in an article under the headline, “Socceroos, The Mozambique Witchdoctor And The Curse.’’

It was published on the ABC website on June 1, 2018.

“That night, the nyunga went to the pitch where the game was to be played, buried some bones near the goal posts, and placed a curse on the Rhodesian team.

“In the next match, Australia won 3-1, but as the Socceroos (were about) to leave, the nyunga approached the players and told them he wanted to be paid $1,000 for his services.

“The players were either unwilling, or unable to pay, leading the nyunga to reverse the curse and put it on the Socceroos.

“The godfather of Australian football, the late Johnny Warren, once said of the incident: ‘From that moment that he put the curse on, everything went wrong for the team.’’’

Heartbreaking defeats in the final game of the qualifiers for the ’94, ’98 and 2002 World Cup were all attributed to that curse.

The defeat in ’97, when they led 2-0 at home in the second half against Iran only for that game to end in a bizarre draw, denying them a World Cup place, stands out.

John Safran, a comic television host, decided to try and have the curse removed and took his production team to Mozambique where they met two sangomas named Paulino and Miriam.

“On the very football pitch where Australia defeated Rhodesia in 1969, Paulino channeled the spirit of the long-dead nyunga, who had placed the original curse, and performed a ritual to lift the hex, which included covering Safran in chicken’s blood,’’ the ABC report says.

“When Safran returned to Australia, he and Warren went to Sydney’s Olympic stadium and performed the second part of the ritual, which involved covering themselves in a special clay the nyunga had given them.

“Warren thanked Safran for breaking the curse, though, the former Socceroo did not live long enough to see if the hex had indeed been broken.

“Almost exactly a year after Warren’s death, the Socceroos qualified for their first World Cup in 32 years, defeating Uruguay in a penalty shoot-out at the Olympic stadium in front of 82,000 people.

“At the end of the SBS broadcast of the match, commentator and former Socceroo Craig Foster thanked Safran.’’

You see, even our white colleagues believe in all this supernatural stuff, but they don’t hate themselves and, instead, they honour their heroes.

If I were to meet Canadian rocker Bryan Adams, I would ask for his permission to rewrite some of the lyrics from his hit song, “Summer of ’69,’’ and I would say:

“Johnny consulted the sangoma, George provided the drama

They should’ve known the Socceroos would never get far

“Oh, when they look back now

That summer seemed to last forever

And, if they had the choice

Yeah, they’d always wanna be there

Those were the best days of their lives.’’

Nike close Oregon project

LONDON. – The Nike Oregon Project has been closed down in the wake of head coach Alberto Salazar being banned for four years after being found guilty of doping violations.

In a statement, a Nike spokesperson said the Salazar situation had become “an unfair burden” on NOP athletes.

The NOP’s website and social media channels have been taken down. Nike has always tried to put the athlete and their needs at the front of all of our decisions,” Nike added.

“This situation including uninformed innuendo and unsubstantiated assertions has become an unfair burden for current OP athletes. That is exactly counter to the purpose of the team.

“We have therefore made the decision to wind down the Oregon Project to allow the athletes to focus on their training and competition needs. We will help all of our athletes in this transition as they choose the coaching set up that is right for them.” – BBC Sport.
