Bafana Bafana still to get AFCON dues

$

THOUGH the Warriors of Zimbabwe hogged the limelight for all the wrong reasons, demanding to be paid upfront at the 2019 AFCON finals, it has emerged Bafana Bafana players are still to be paid for their exploits at the tournament.

The stand-off between the Warriors and ZIFA, over hefty payments, during the tour of duty in Egypt, dominated Zimbabwe’s participation at the showcase.

The Warriors repeatedly threatened not to fulfil their group matches, until certain payments were made, including US$5 000 appearance fees for every game.

Now, it has emerged Bafana Bafana, who did better than the Warriors at the AFCON finals by reaching the quarter-finals, after knocking out hosts Egypt in the Round of 16, are still waiting to be paid for their exploits.

SAFA have not yet received R11-million prize money they are supposed to get for reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament.

And, without that financial injection, one of the continent’s richest football associations have not been able to pay the players who represented Bafana Bafana in Egypt.

SAFA, though, are not the only ones affected.

The Nigeria Football Federation reportedly only received US$600 000 from CAF back in August, from the total sum of US$1.4-million they won for the third place at the continental tournament.

The NFF hosted the Warriors in a warm-up game and then flew the Zimbabwe delegation to Egypt for the AFCON finals on the same plane as the Super Eagles.

Winners Algeria, runners-up Senegal and fourth-placed Tunisia are also yet to receive their full winnings two months since the competition took place.

Acting SAFA chief executive, Russell Paul, says everything regarding the issue will be much clearer by the end of this week.

“We are just seeking their full clarity,” Paul told KickOff.com.

“Although they (CAF) have now started to give clarity, so I don’t want to comment on it until maybe Friday. We are exchanging communication at the moment so I don’t want to comment until I get the final comment from them.”

Asked if the African football mother body, at least, explained what was causing the delay, the answer was negative.

“No, that’s why I’m saying we are in discussion with them, they are just talking to us at the moment, they are making clarity,” Paul said.

“They have made some payments but we are not sure what those payments are for. So that’s why I don’t want to comment until they have clarified all of that over the next two, three days.” — Sports Reporter/Kick-Off

Marshall’s masterclass blunts PSG’s US$534m machine

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor

MARSHALL MUNETSI produced a midfield masterclass, which crippled Paris Saint-Germain’s US$534m machine led by Brazilian superstar Neymar and, in just one-and-a half hours, sent his transfer value soaring past the US$30m mark.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwe international, in his first start for French side Stade Reims, announced his arrival on the global football stage with a big bang with a blockbuster man-of-the-match show at the iconic Parc des Prince in Paris on Wednesday night.

Signed for just around US$500 000 from Orlando Pirates two months ago, Munetsi saw his transfer value storm past the US$30m mark, a 600 percent rise, after a vintage individual performance.

“That was a US$30m-player performance,’’ an agent, who felt revealing his identity would be inappropriate because Munetsi is under the management of a different stable, told The Herald yesterday.

“This boy has just changed his story in one game and I can tell you he has thrust himself under a lot of pressure going forward.

“A number of the traditional giants in the game will be analysing his performance on Wednesday and they will be sending people to keep a close look on him in every game he plays from now onwards.

“His imposing frame, which is a reminder of Yaya Toure at his peak, is just what the top coaches want in their teams, his movement with the ball is impressive and he plays without fear, it was very difficult, at times, to believe he was making his first start and playing against PSG.

“That was an amazing display and if Idrissa Gueye (the Senegalese defensive midfielder) cost PSG £30m (about US$37m) in July this year to get him from Everton, and he is 30 years old, I can tell you that — because of the relative youthfulness of Marshall — what we saw on Wednesday was a US$30m player and that’s just a starting value.

“The top coaches and clubs are always on the lookout for the fresh talent that is coming into the game and such box-to-box midfielders, with the ability to defend and also to create for their teams, are in real demand and that performance by Marshall is the kind of stuff that just changes everything.” France Football, the influential weekly magazine that organises the Ballon d’Or, yesterday praised Munetsi’s performance in Stade Reims’ 2-0 win over PSG, describing him as one of the best players in the game.

It ended PSG’s unbeaten 22-match at home in French Ligue 1, stretching over 16 months, and came just a week after the Paris giants had crushed Real Madrid 3-0 in a UEFA Champions League match at the same venue.

“Arriving from South Africa, and more specifically Orlando Pirates, the Zimbabwean had not yet had the opportunity to show himself,” France Football stated.

“Covering every blade of grass, he finished the match with five tackles, the best total of the match, six interceptions and won eleven duels.”

Munetsi also completed 25 of his 30 attempted passes with a successful completion rate of 86%, including providing the assist for the first goal when his cross was headed home by Gambian forward Hassane Kamara in the 29th minute.

“What an amazing performance . . . so happy to have made my first full debut. GOD IS GREAT,’’ Munetsi said on Twitter.

The Zimbabwean performance also saw him being named in the L’Equipe Team of the Week with a top ranking of eight out of a possible 10 points.

PSG were without the rested Gueye, the suspended Marco Verrattiand the injured Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani but they were still able to field a US$534m machine, led by Neymar, who had scored a last-gasp winner in their last match.

Costa Rica international goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, French/Senegalese defender Abdou Diallo, Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, Spain’s Ander Herrera, Julian Bernat, Angel Di Maria, Pablo Sarabia, Thomas Meunier, Marquinhos, Eric maxim Choup-Moting and Neymar all played parts in the match.

But it was Munetsi who overshadowed everyone with a powerful performance which lit the Parc des Princes and, if he can keep this kind of form, it would be difficult for Stade Reims to keep hold of the midfielder.

Ironically, the French club brought the Zimbabwean to France as a player they could develop into a key member of their squad in the future.

“The recruitment of Marshall Munetsi is part of a logic of the future . . . He is a referenced player in Africa who has climbed the ladder, one after the other, and displays good experience at his age with high level matches in the CAF Champions League,’’ Reims’ director general Mathieu Lacour told the club’s website in July.

“Marshall has a great versatility since he can evolve at different positions in the middle of the field. His characteristics, in particular, his athletic density and his volume of play, correspond to a rare profile which was checked by the staff.

“The idea, at first, will be to accompany the player in the discovery of European and French football so that he develops his full potential at the Stade de Reims.”

However, after the player’s show on Wednesday night, against a giant like PSG and such superstars like Neymar, could change all that.

Petros Kausiyo in DOHA, Qatar

ZIMBABWE’S road queen, Rutendo Nyahora, is banking on her mental strength to see her through when she competes in the first midnight marathon at the 2019 World Athletics Championships here tonight.

Nyahora is the only female in the five-member Team Zimbabwe that will be at the global athletics showcase, which bursts into life at the iconic Khalifa International stadium today.

While the Team Zimbabwe cast easily pales into insignificance, when compared to such sides like the strong 141-athlete Unites States contingent, which includes eight world champions and 13 Rio Olympic gold medallists, Nyahora insists it will all be about the heart when she takes to the road at midnight.

Day-time temperatures of 38-40 degrees Celsius have meant the marathon, staged around DOHA’s waterfront called the Corniche, will be run against the backdrop of a beautifully illuminated skyline in the Qatar capital.

For those in the magnificent 48 000 seater stadium, which has undergone massive renovations, including the installation of air-conditioned warm-up facilities for the athletes, the conditions will be cooler at around 23 degrees.

International Association of Athletics Federations president Sebastian Coe, unanimously re-elected for a second four-year term on Wednesday, has also heaped praise on the renovations undertaken at the Khalifa stadium.

Nyahora’s countryman, Chengetai Mapaya, will have better weather conditions for his triple-jump event, which also starts with the qualifying heats today.

“When I arrived yesterday in the morning, I was so stressed at the airport because I could not breathe (well) at first, the heat was too much as I had just landed,’’ said Nyahora.

“But, when I went for a jog and to see how the conditions are like, I realised that I could actually breathe and these are conditions you can still run in but you lose a lot of water quickly like in a space of five minutes.

“You just have to drink lots of water and I think I am going to do my best and I am injury-free.’’

Nyahora said a lot of focus was needed for her to ensure she runs within her capacity with the aim being to meet the personal target of running the marathon under 2hrs 40 minutes.

“I will have to go with the pace I can handle, the target I have been given by my coach is to run the marathon under 2.40 and my training has been going on well,’’ she said.

“If I can run a marathon under 2:40 I will be happy.

“If I can have a good position, I will be happy.

“I am not thinking about the Olympics because I already have a race next year which I will try to use to qualify for the Olympics.

“When I was discussing with my coach we said there is no way I could run my fastest here in Doha but, if it does happen that I qualify for the Olympics, it will be a huge bonus.’’

Zifa leaders defend funds movement

ZIFA president Felton Kamambo yesterday defended his association’s decision to shelve FIFA fans in the accounts of an association executive board member and also rejected claims his leadership took their girlfriends to the 2019 AFCON finals instead of genuine Warriors fans.

Kamambo appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Recreation in the company of ZIFA acting vice-chairman, Philemon Machana, and the association’s spokesperson, Xolisani Gwesela.

The ZIFA leaders’ appearances before the committee had been postponed, for a number of reasons, in the past but yesterday the country’s football leaders faced the legislators who were demanding a number of answers to issues that have dominated the running of the national sport.

Kamambo told the committee that, indeed, funds from FIFA were moved from the association’s bank accounts to bank accounts belonging to a board member, Machana, through his company Conduit Holdings.

However, the ZIFA boss said the transaction was done to safeguard the funds, after they had received a tip-off that their bank account would be garnished, which would have seen funds, channelled into the association from FIFA for development purposes, being gobbled by other activities.

“Some of these moneys found themselves into the accounts of individual ZIFA members, that is true chairman, I must admit,’’ Kamambo said.

“Our intelligence had shown that the account was going to be garnished and FIFA money cannot be used to pay legacy debt.

“Once that is done, they (FIFA) will stop supporting Zimbabwe (financially).’’

Kamambo also rejected claims that the ZIFA board flew their girlfriends to Egypt, for the AFCON finals, instead of the fans who were supposed to back the Warriors.

“We had councillors who went there, our councillors, we wanted them to support the team,’’ said Kamambo. “At the same time, there was need for benchmarking.

“Our intention is that one day we will also be hosting AFCON.

‘’The supporters that went to AFCON, each Premier League club was represented by supporters. In terms of girlfriends, we were not sure whether, among the supporters, there were people who were in love.’’ Mhondoro-Ngezi legislator, Tavengwa Mukuhlani, said the committee didn’t have any problem with whoever ZIFA chose to take to such events like the AFCON finals but they had issues when such trips were undertaken against a background where the players were having issues over payments.

Last month FIFA have turned down a request from the Sport and Recreation Commission to use their power to remove the entire ZIFA leadership from office, and replace it with a normalisation committee, to run domestic football for a specified period.

FIFA said while they expect bodies like ZIFA to be fully accountable and, if required, submit to the authorities all relevant information regarding the use of public funds, they didn’t believe there was need for the removal of Kamambo’s ZIFA leadership.

Should the ZIFA leadership be replaced by an interim committee, at the instigation of the SRC and the Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Ministry, FIFA said that would be deemed to be interference in the affairs of the association. And, it could result in ZIFA’s suspension from FIFA, with the country’s national teams barred from international competitions.

Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter

CHARLES Manyuchi’s principal sponsors, Tinmac Foundation, have increased their sponsorship package for the middleweight pugilist.

He takes on Argentine boxer, Diego Diaz Gallardo, for the World Boxing Federation title at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) tomorrow.

And Tinmac Foundation, who have bankrolled the former World Boxing Council silver welterweight champion’s activities since his victory over Pablo Ezequiel Acosta at the same venue on May 25, have topped up their sponsorship purse for the 30-year old fighter.

Tinmac Foundation director, Tinoda Machakaire, confirmed his organisation had increased their sponsorship package for Manyuchi.

“As Tinmac Foundation, we have sought to motivate our boxer Charles Manyuchi by increasing our package.

“We have also pledged some monetary rewards which will be given to the pugilist at the venue after the fight.

“We are very committed to the growth of boxing in the country. This is one sport which we feel is underrated in the country yet it has a lot in terms of potential.

“Charles is one of the boxers who have proved that the sport can help put Zimbabwe on the map.

“He deserves every Zimbabwean’s support. We appreciate other corporates who have come on board to help his cause. The WBF is one of the main titles.’’

Tinmac’s pledge comes on the back of another bumper sponsorship package announced by NetOne on Wednesday.

Several other corporates, including Nyaradzo, have also come aboard.

Manyuchi’s coach, Ali Phiri, yesterday said the boxer will do well.

“As Team Charles Manyuchi, I believe we have done everything to prepare Charles, and other boxers from the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, for the crunch event.

“We believe Manyuchi is going to implement everything in the ring.

“He is an outstanding boxer. We know he is up against one of the best boxers around the world but we are fighting in Harare.

Nine other bouts, including the WBF (light-weight) title fight between Brandon Denes and Malawi’s Byson Gwayani, are on the undercard.

ZIMBABWE will be looking for a boost when they begin their participation in the T20I Triangular series in Singapore which begins today with a match against Nepal.

The Chevrons will be led on the tour by Sean Williams in a squad that largely reflects the development thrust Zimbabwe Cricket want to embark on.

This will be first T20I status series of matches coordinated by the Singapore Cricket Association after ICC had granted international status for all T20 matches played among member nations in January 2019.

Zimbabwe have dropped to 14th place on the ICC T20I rankings, three places below minnows Nepal, who are their opponents in today’s match.

With no big matches on the horizon, ZC have indicated the tour of Singapore will be development-oriented after including largely untested players such as Tony Munyonga, Daniel Jakiel, Tino Mutombodzi and William Mashinge.

They have also sent in experienced players like Craig Ervine, Regis Chakabva, PJ Moor and skipper Williams.

For the hosts, this series will prove to be a good test for their team who are ranked 21st in official T20I rankings.

Nepal are ranked 11th and Zimbabwe (14).

The hosts are preparing for the ICC T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers in Dubai, UAE in October 2019.

Nepal will miss the Global Qualifiers after losing to Singapore in the decider.

Zimbabwe will be returning to Singapore’s shores after 20 years, having last played in a 50-over Tri-series against India and West Indies in the Singapore Coca-Cola Challenge in 1999.

Mire lands academy post

FORMER Zimbabwe international cricketer, Solomon Mire, has taken up a new role as academy and coaching strategy director at Cutting Edge Cricket Academy in Australia.

Mire, who ventured into academy coaching a few years back, is excited about taking the new challenge.

He is a Cricket Australia-accredited coach and has previously worked in coaching roles at the academy.

“Excited (with) the opportunity to help others reach their cricket goals,” he posted on his social media pages.

Mire hung up his bat in July soon after the suspension of Zimbabwe Cricket by the International Cricket Council two months ago.

He immediately retraced his footsteps back to his base in Australia.

There were mixed feelings over the decision to leave international cricket with some feeling it was premature.

But the dreadlocked opening batsman felt his time to leave international cricket had come. The Cutting Edge Cricket Academy also felt they will benefit a lot from his experience.

“We are pleased to announce that former Zimbabwean International, Solomon Mire, has taken on new role as Academy & Coaching Strategy Director at Cutting Edge Cricket.

“Solo’s cricketing journey has been well documented.

“He is passionate about sharing his learning experiences as a player at all levels around the world and he brings this vast experience to the Cutting Edge Academy.

“He draws his coaching experience from working with, and under various elite coaches, and is a CA Accredited Coach.

“Stay tuned for more details regarding our new programs set to commence at the end of October,” said academy in their official announcement.

Mire made his cricket debut for Centrals in 2007, scoring 94 runs against the Southerns in the Faithwear Inter-Provincial One-Day competition.

In 2008, he was part of the Zimbabwe Under-19 team’s unsuccessful trip to the Youth World Cup in Malaysia.

He also played in the Australian Big Bash League for Melbourne Renegades between 2013 and 2014. Mire’s last match for Zimbabwe was on July 14 this year during the tour of Ireland.

He bowed out of the game after representing his country in two Tests, 47 ODIs and nine T20s, scoring over 1000 runs.

Zim football legend Hamid Dhana dies

Grace Chingoma Senior Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE football legend Hamid “Muzukuru” Dhana, who passed away yesterday, has been described by his wife Brigit as a fighter who fought till the end.

He was 61.

He died at his Braeside home in Harare after losing his battle with colon cancer.

The former Dynamos, Arcadia United and Black Rhinos midfielder was diagnosed with colon cancer three years ago.

His wife told The Herald Dhana was a man who was loved by his community.

“He was diagnosed three years ago and could have had the cancer for a little longer but, because he was active, we only knew about it three years ago,’’ she said.

“He fought a good fight and fought to the end. He was a soldier and a fighter. He was a loving person and was loved by the community and was a good football player.’’

Mourners are gathered at 4 Nightingale Close in Braeside.

Dhana is survived by wife Brigit, six children and 11 grandchildren.

Brigit said the funeral arrangements were yet to be put in place since his children had just returned to the United Kingdom and Canada last week and would have to make new plans to return home.

Former Dynamos midfielder and coach David “Yogi” Mandigora, who was Dhana’s teammate at the Glamour Boys, said it was another sad day for football.

“I can’t say much at the moment. It’s a sad day. We got along very well. He was a very nice guy and I was disappointed when he left for Black Rhinos.

“We played together at Dynamos and the national team.’’

Dhana’s close friend, Charlie Jones, described the former midfielder as a gentleman.

“It’s very sad to lose a legend of his calibre. We will sadly miss him. He was always a gentleman and a close friend,” he said. Veteran broadcaster Charles “CNN” Mabika, who had dedicated yesterday’s Battle of Zimbabwe between Dynamos and Highanders to Dhana and Madinda Ndlovu, who is also under the weather in Botswana, said the former midfielder’s death had come as a shock.

“It is a shock to me because he seemed to be on the mend. Football is a loser. He was one of the finest midfielders this country has ever produced,’’ said Mabika.

“He was a jovial fellow. I remember him during the Warriors’ trips, he was always cracking jokes.

“My deepest condolences to the Dhana family, his football legacy will live forever.’’

Mabika had written glowingly about Dhana in The Herald on Thursday.

“Dhana will forever be remembered for his unique and mesmerising swivel, with the ball firmly under control, followed by a defence-splitting pass to set up the likes of Gift Mpariwa or Oliver Kateya,” he wrote.

In that same article Mandigora recalled that golden era.

“Hamid is, undoubtedly, one of the most skilful players I have ever played alongside,’’ said Mandigora.

“I was more of a defensive shield at both sides while Dhana would be given the licence to roam around the field and create openings for the strikers . . . and boy, he do it so diligently.

“Then, of course, there is that inimitable back body swerve where he would be facing his own goal and, all of a sudden, his marker would stumble following that miraculous swivel.

“And, he would glide up-field as he looked for an opening to cause more havoc,” said Mandigora.

His daughter, Syreeta, last year had told the world how shattered she was when she learnt about her father’s condition.

“Learning how short life is and as we experience life’s lessons and how our decisions make, break and change our lives entirely, I wish I had made some different decisions and spent more time going back home to Zimbabwe to see my dad,’’ she said.

“Having only seen my dad once in 17 years. I leave next month to go hold his hand, play cards with him at home and try to boost his spirits to help him kick this demon called cancer, but we need your help please.

“His mind is tremendously strong, his spirit unfailing and his heart solid. That great ‘midfielder’ is ready to physically kick this Cancer!’’

Yesterday, Dhana lost that battle.

TELONE coach Rahman Gumbo snubbed the post-match interviews in frustration after his charges crashed out of the Chibuku Super Cup following this first round loss at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

Melvin Mekiwa’s strike in the first half and an own goal by Emmanuel Mandiranga in the second ensured the hosts secured their place in the quarter-finals of the country’s biggest knock-out tournament.

The former Warriors assistant coach remained on the pitch long after the final whistle and showed no interest in attending the presser.

Black Rhinos coach, Herbert Maruwa whose club is also in the title mix, was ecstatic after the match.

“It’s a feel good factor to see your charges play with so much conviction,’’ he said.

“They looked very comfortable on the ball and did everything to win the match.

“It’s unfortunate we failed to score more goals. Otherwise it was a good game from the guys.

“Cup games need fighting spirit and confidence. We had those two qualities and I hope we will do well going forward.”

Maruwa’s troops looked dangerous right from kick-off with Warriors international Wellington Taderera dictating the game in the middle of the park.

Francesco Zekumbawira should have helped the army side turn their dominance into a goal 15 minutes into the match but failed to hit the target when fed by the impressive Taderera.

Ten minutes later, Mekiwa rose unmarked in the box to plant a header, off a perfect corner kick by Jameson Mukombwe, to give Rhinos a deserved lead.

Gumbo’s charges, who are also not safe from relegation in the league, tried to come back into the game, especially in the opening minutes of the second half.

But they were soon to undo themselves, Mandiranga turning into his own nets a long throw from Andrew Thandi.

From then, Rhinos made sure they retained a lion’s share of possession and had the luxury of missing several clear chances while their goalkeeper Blessing Mwandimutsira was never called into full action.

Manyuchi makes history

CHARLES MANYUCHI’S journey towards redemption continued to gather momentum when he became the first boxer from this country to win a world title in the early hours of yesterday.

Manyuchi beat Argentine fighter Diego Diaz Gallardo via a third-round technical knockout at the Harare International Conference Centre to land the World Boxing Federation world middleweight title.

The former World Boxing Council silver welterweight champion paid tribute to former and current boxers for the feat.

“I’m ecstatic after this win over Gallardo. Look at what he has done in the past. He is a fantastic star but it’s only that I had a good strategy to counter him,’’ said Manyuchi.

“Becoming the first person to do anything is always remarkable. Knowing that I am the first Zimbabwean to win a world title makes me feel even more inspired.

“But, this is not for me, definitely not for my family alone. It is our achievement as a country.

“Let me also make it clear that it is fellow boxers, both amateur and professional, who help me do what I have just done.

“Former boxers also played their part. They laid the foundation which we are building on.”

Zimbabwe Professional Boxing Control Board chairman Richard Hondo congratulated Manyuchi.

“As the board, we would like to congratulate the new World Boxing Federation middleweight champion Charles Manyuchi,’’ said Hondo.

“I can also confirm that Manyuchi is the first world champion from Zimbabwe. Of course, others have done remarkably well in the game but Manyuchi is the first to bring home a world title.’’

He said the legendary Langton” Schoolboy” Tinago, who died in July last year, also remains the best-ranked fight by the World Boxing Council.

Tinago was at one time ranked sixth in the world. Fresh from being treated to some bruising battles in the preceding supporting act, including the WBF lightweight title fight between Brandon Denes and Malawi’s Byson Gwayani, which the Zimbabwean claimed via a knockout in the penultimate round of 12, the fans’ attention switched to the main bout.

But, as soon as the opening bell sounded, at about 12:17am yesterday, Manyuchi showed no intentions of giving his opponent a chance and 14 minutes later, it was all over.

He was always in control as he toyed with the 39-year-old veteran, a two-time holder of the belt.

His combinations always appeared programmed to end the bout early but, somehow, Gallardo managed to survive the first two rounds.

But there was no way he was going to stand the third-round blitzkrieg.

Referee Patrick Mukondiwa had to step in, to save the Argentine, giving the fight to Manyuchi via a technical knockout.

The Zimbabwean took his record to 24-4-1.

“I’m overjoyed by this big win. Gallardo is a good boxer but my strategy worked very well,’’ said Manyuchi.

“I put a lot in training in the past three months. I had to sharpen my strengths and improve on my weaknesses.

“The fans were amazing today. Thank you so much Zimbabwe. This victory is for you all. We did this together.

“I am short for words when it comes to our sponsors. I appreciate their sincerity in helping us out. They include NetOne, Nyaradzo, Majestics, Country Lodges and Tinmac Foundation, among others. Without them I am nothing.”

Manyuchi’s principal sponsors, Tinmac Foundation, whose director Tinoda Machakaire was part of the crowd, pledged a windfall for all boxers from the boxer’s Chivhu stable.

“As Tinmac Foundation, we would like to congratulate Charles Manyuchi and his boxers for flying high the country’s flag. We will soon be announcing the full package for the boxers,’’ he said.

“We are proud to be associated with the Charles Manyuchi brand.’’

The foundation gave Manyuchi $100 000 in May after his victory over Acosta.Fittingly, boxers from the Chivhu stable showed they are under the tutelage of a good leader with strong performances.

Young Tinashe Majoni and Tatenda Biningu also won the national titles in the super flyweight and bantamweight categories.

Women International Boxing Association super bantamweight title holder Kudakwashe Chiwandire knocked out Malawi’s Euria Matoga while Hasan Milanzi did the same to Audrey Masamba, also from Malawi, in the same category.

Prince strikes again to dump DeMbare

Highlanders ………………………… (1) 1

DYNAMOS coach Tonderai Ndiraya yesterday had no kind words for his players after his side fell to old rivals Highlanders in a drab first round of the Chibuku Super Cup at Rufaro.

In-form Bosso striker Prince Dube continued with his scoring streak as his solitary strike separated the two giants and gave their new coach Hendrik Pieter de Jongh a dream start.

Dube capitalised on a schoolboy defensive blunder by Munyaradzi Mawadza in the 29th minute and neatly tucked the ball past the advancing goalkeeper Simba Chinani.

Ndiraya was incensed by the way his team failed to show up and, in particular, the “silly” goal that they conceded.

“We came into the game really wanting to win in spirit but I thought physically we were not prepared to win today,’’ he said.

“I think we were just poor, if I want to be honest.

“We were playing at home against a team that has played two games in the last five days.

“We were fresh and I thought we would really push ourselves but we didn’t do that. I am quite disappointed with the way we went about our business today. It was just a poor show by the team.

“We wanted to win this trophy because it’s something that we had control over (unlike the league). I thought we would fight to get a result but it wasn’t to be.

“It looks like each time we play Highlanders we tend to score against ourselves. After having had a good run of results, previously, we lost to Highlanders.

“We had gone for so many matches again this time and we have lost again to the same

opponents.

“Quite frankly, I think Highlanders won this game. I give it more to them than our team. We didn’t really apply ourselves in a good way. I am very disappointed.’’

Highlanders opened the scoring virtually out of nothing after Mawadza mistimed a bounce inside his own half and Dube pounced on the chance.

The game, which was almost tainted by an ugly pre-match brawl between the rival supporters at the City End bay, attracted a poor crowd. And it failed to flow as both teams struggled, the players at times were getting too physical and forcing numerous stoppages.

Tinashe Makanda’s dipping shot bounced off the crossbar. Bosso coach, De Jongh, was still thrilled by the result.

“We scored at the right moment and I think we had another opportunity for a second goal.

“The second half was a lot more difficult because Dynamos played a lot of long balls trying to push us backwards.

“But okay, we won and I am happy. The next round is important for the group, the fans and also for me. We look forward to the future,” said De Jongh.

Teams:

Dynamos: S. Chinani, E. Jalai, T. Muringai, J. Tigere, M. Mawadza (S. Mupamawonde, 58th min) , A. Maliselo, G. Mukambi, G. Murwira, N. Katawa, T. Macheke (J. Ngahan, 72nd min), N. Mangala (J. Jarrison, 58th min)

Highlanders: A. Sibanda, M. Phiri, M. Ndlovu, A. Mbemba, P. Muduhwa, N. Masuku, D. Mhindirira, B. Banda, R. Lunga (A. Silla, 83rd min), T. Makanda (Nyirenda, 75th min), P. Dube

Petros Kausiyo in DOHA, Qatar
YOUTH Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister, Kirsty Coventry, wants national associations to have a shift in focus and put more emphasis on quality over quantity when they register for major international competitions.

Coventry made the remarks after paying a courtesy call on members of Team Zimbabwe at the on-going IAAF World Athletics Championships here yesterday.

The Minister, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, is in Doha for a joint meeting between the IAAF and the IOC which was held on the sidelines of the global athletics show-piece at Khalifa International stadium.

Coventry met with National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president Tendai Tagara, coach Lismati Phakamile, and athletes — road runner Rutendo Nyahora and triple jumper Chengetayi Mapaya — at their hotel. The men’s marathon trio of Munyaradzi Jari, Ngonidzashe Ncube and Isaac Mpofu, who had been training in Zimbabwe, are expected to arrive here today ahead of their race on Saturday.

Coventry said she was not particularly worried about the small size of the contingent which NAAZ sent here insisting she would, during her tenure in the government, emphasise that Zimbabwean associations focus more on producing quality than quantity.

“Something that I want us to focus on as Zimbabwe is to have a strategy where we just don’t bring hundreds of athletes but work on quality over quantity.

“I am going to ask the associations to be deliberate on the little money that we get and we have to be methodical about it.

“We need to have some research on how we are measuring up against the other countries,’’ Coventry said.

An Olympian gold medallist during her swimming career, Coventry knows the significance of the big stage and she also commended both Nyahora and Mapaya for having qualified for the World Championships.

“The facilities here in Doha are amazing, the people have been great, receptive and very welcoming for our athletes and I think with the Olympics coming next year it is a good opportunity competing with the other athletes, they can see where they are and measure themselves up.

“It is a huge experience. The conditions have been tough, the weather, especially the marathon runners, but I am very proud that we finished because nearly half the athletes couldn’t finish because of the heat and it shows the toughness of our athletes.

“I hope the guys that are coming in will also do the same’’.

Coventry said the staging of the Doha Championships ahead of the Olympics was timely for the Zimbabwe.

“World Championships before the Olympics is always about seeing where you are where the other guys and when you go back keep training and working harder’’.

Felton Kamambo Special Correspondent
THE Zimbabwe Foootball Association would like to congratulate Zimbabwe’s representatives in the CAF Total inter-club competitions FC Platinum and Triangle FC for their splendid performances in the African Safari.

FC Platinum triumphed over UD Songo of Mozambique 5-2 on aggregate to qualify for the group stages of Africa’s most prestigious club competition, the Total Champions League for the second season in a row.

Evidently, the Zimbabwean champions picked valuable lessons in their last group appearance and have put all their hands on the deck to qualify again and hopefully do even better this time.

Triangle FC also emerged victorious after beating Azam FC of Tanzania on a 2-0 aggregate to qualify for the play-off round of the Total Confederation Cup.

This is Triangle’s debut in Africa and the Association is delighted with such performances, especially noting that most of their players have not played on the continent before. The two Premier Soccer League clubs have done us proud and this is abundant evidence of the great strides the Association has taken in developing, supporting and growing football in the country from grassroots to the top flight league.

That the pair has managed to ride over all obstacles, home and away, shows the strength of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League and its endeavours to continuously have its clubs dance with the top giants of African football.

The Association would like to wish both teams the best of luck as they embark on the next important stages of the CAF inter club competitions.

ZIFA reiterates that it will continue to render all the necessary support to our clubs to ensure sustained success in Africa.

Sikhumbuzo Moyo in BULAWAYO
SHEER brute force and determination saw FC Platinum turn on the power in the second half to outsmart and outscore hosts UD Songo of Mozambique in the second leg of the CAF Champions League encounter in Beira on Saturday.

Down 0-2 before the half hour mark, the Zimbabwe champions were facing possible elimination.

But, everything changed after the break.

“Our plan remained the same, especially in terms of changing pace when going forward,’’ said coach Lizwe Sweswe.

‘’After being unfortunately down by two goals in the first half, we told the boys not to panic but to stick to the game plan.

“We knew that a two-nil scoreline was very dangerous to our opponents because if we just got a goal, they would panic and start coming hard on us in search of a third goal to cushion themselves.

“But, in the process, they would be opening up spaces in the back and that is exactly what happened.’’

That vital away goal for FC Platinum came in the 52nd minute through a flashing header by Rodwell Chinyengetere off a Gift Mbweti cross from the right flank.

The goal changed the identity of the team that would now progress to the group stage as it meant and, in the 61st minute, they stunned the Mozambicans by drawing level through Never Tigere.

The visitors were now playing like men possessed as they kept on probing forward instead of defending the two goals with Perfect Chikwende a handful to the hosts’ defence while midfield enforcer Kelvin Madzongwe was commanding the area well.

“Being 2-0 down in the first half actually gave us the power to push forward and show the world who we are,’’ said hat-trick hero Rodwell Chinyengetere.

“The coach gave us specific instructions and we did just that and here we are now, through to the group stage of the tournament.’’

Siyachitema on life after WC

Ellina Mhlanga Sports Reporter
TWO months after she led the Zimbabwe senior netball team to their maiden Netball World Cup, former captain Perpetua Siyachitema says life could not be better.

She is now focusing on her coaching career full time.

The 36-year-old called time on her playing career soon after the World Cup.

Siyachitema was the assistant coach for the Under-21 side that competed at the World Youth Cup in 2017 in Botswana.

She is now in charge of Glow Petroleum, a club that plies its trade under the Rainbow Amateur Netball League.

She had been a player-coach since 2014.

“I have been focusing on my coaching career and studying beauty therapy,’’ she said.

“Playing at the highest level of netball, the World Cup, was always been my dream and after participating in the 2019 World Cup, I felt I had seen it all and gained the experience I wanted.

“So, I thought of focusing on my coaching career and share my experience and knowledge.’’

After captaining the Gems for close to a decade, Siyachitema says she is enjoying her new role.

“I am really enjoying it because I can now fully focus on one thing. Being a player and a coach is difficult,’’ she said.

“You can’t correct a player when you are also making some mistakes and you can’t see every mistake.’’

She says she picked lessons in Liverpool at the World Cup.

“I want to bring the fast type of netball, fast transition because that’s where we suffered mostly at the recent World Cup,’’ she said.

“I want to teach people it is necessary to have physically fit athletes, it’s not (achieved) just by running but understanding that going to the gym is a necessity.’’

For someone who was used to being on the court, as a player, she admits it has not been easy to try and inculcate what she knows into her charges.

“I have to be patient and try to teach my players how it’s done and in most cases it takes time to implement what you would have taught them,” said Siyachitema.

Siyachitema attributes her success in netball to her husband, Dalubuhle Nyoni, who has been very supportive.

“There were times when I felt like giving up but he kept pushing me. The journey hasn’t been a smooth one, trust me, training under harsh conditions, without enough time in camp.

“We would travel to as far as Tanzania by road, we would go to RoadPort and board a bus full of other passengers for three to four days just to go for a tournament with very little allowance.

“But, I kept going and pushing, just telling myself that one day things will be cool.’’

Away from netball the mother of one enjoys watching social soccer and basketball.

“I enjoy basketball and used to play and I am looking for a team to join just to keep fit and I enjoy watching social soccer every Sunday,” said Siyachitema.

Although her side is still to find the touch that saw them finishing second at the end of the 2018 RANL season, she remains hopeful of better fortunes in the future.

The Mids with a Midas Touch

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
THE last happy family gathering for Hamid Dhana was a perfect picture of what he had been for more than half a century of his life – a jolly good fellow, a knife in his right hand, cutting his birthday cake, and a glass of beer in his left hand.

His beautiful wife Brigit by his side and two banners of his beloved Liverpool either side of them in the background.

That was in May last year in Braeside, his community, among this people, with his family and friends, the celebration of his 60th birthday anniversary.

Even now, there was no questioning, as he posed for cameras, the power still remained concentrated in his left leg, that special one which had helped him craft a career in football.

Not as one of the ordinary players, who have graced the domestic game, but as one of its all-time greats.

Remarkably, for a man who was being tormented by cancer of the colon, Mids, as Dhana was affectionately known by those close to him, appeared cheerful.

But, that had always been what made him different, what made him special, the ability to always face his battles head on, without displaying any signs of weakness or any hint he was being overwhelmed by the fight.

“He fought a good fight and fought to the end,’’ his wife Brigit told The Herald. ‘’He was a soldier and a fighter. He was a loving person and was loved by the community and was a good football player.’’

Of course, he was.

For one to make the Arcadia United, Dynamos and Black Rhinos teams of the ‘80s, they simply had to be good – there was no room for the average, those who were not good enough were simply exposed at the training sessions, and cast away from the stars.

They loved him at DeMbare, back in the days when the Glamour Boys represented greatness, long before they had been reduced to this shell, and they called him Muzukuru.

They loved the value he brought to their team, that cultured left foot, helping them maintain their status as the dominant team in domestic football, before his departure to Black Rhinos, along with many other stars, helped transform the army side into a formidable force.

The first team, after Independence, to find a way to stop DeMbare from winning the league championship, something the Glamour Boys had monopolised from 1980 to 1983, until Rhinos captured the championship in 1984.

Dynamos, with a new jewel in their crown in the form of Moses Chunga, stormed back to win the league championship in 1985 and defended the title again the following year before, once again, their steamrolling machine was stopped by Rhinos who grabbed their second title in 1987.

In those eight seasons, the Glamour Boys won six of the eight league championships, including four on the trot between ’80 and ’83, while Rhinos took the other two.

While the ‘80s represented the golden years for Dhana, Brigit and his family, which would grow to six children and 11 grandchildren by the time the legendary footballer died on Sunday at the age of 61, the past few years were difficult as they dealt with his battle against cancer.

‘‘Last September his wife Bridgit Dhana shared with his children that he was suffering severe stomach pains and digestive discomfort,’’ the website www.justgiving.com http://www.justgiving.com reported in November last year as they announced a crowd funding initiative to raise funds for the legend’s medical bills.

‘‘Mids learnt ‘late in the game’ that there was a mass that ‘could be’ cancerous and that he would have had to undergo an operation to remove this mass immediately.

‘‘Mids was on a solid medical aid scheme for many years. However, never having been taken ill he saw no cause to visit the doctor and decided that the continuation of the subscriptions was unnecessary, it was when he started complaining of severe tummy pains and he had the first surgery that Bridgit registered him onto a new medical aid scheme .

‘‘He has been on this medical aid scheme from January this year (last year) and as such the medical aid will not cover any operations or chemo/radiation for another 12 months.

‘‘It was because of this that his children immediately rallied around him and managed to garner the finance for the surgery, to remove the mass from his large intestine. The surgery appeared successful.

‘‘However, eight months later, (May 2018) his wife shared with his children that the pain was back and that he would have to stop working.

‘‘The toll that this took on him physically, and mentally, was immediately visible and day by day that larger-than-life spirit began fading. He underwent further tests and on July 20th, 2018 was diagnosed with aggressive Colon Cancer, stage3.

‘‘This came as huge shock to his loving children as he never showed a down moment and during conversations and messages with him, he always made it about his children and their lives, never mentioning the pain, he was obviously experiencing, or the very grave possibility of the outcome.’’

That grave possibility came on Sunday when he passed away.

His daughter, Syreeta, probably made the one statement that touched many lives back then in November.

‘‘I wish I had made some different decisions and spent more time going back home to Zimbabwe to see my dad,’’ she told www.justgiving.com. Having only seen my dad once in 17 years. I leave next month to go hold his hand, play cards with him at home and try to boost his spirits to help him kick this demon called Cancer.

“His mind is tremendously strong, his spirit unfailing and his heart solid. That great ‘midfielder’ is ready to physically kick this Cancer!’’

Of course, it turned into a battle even this legendary midfielder couldn’t even win.

Muzukuru was a rare breed of footballers

Charles Mabika Special Correspondent
Hamid “Muzukuru” Dhana, who passed away on Sunday after a long battle with colon cancer, was a rare breed of special footballers.

He had a bouncy spring in his step and possessed an inimitable body swerve that mesmerised his markers.

And, he scored special goals.

He had a flashy smile, most of the time, you always wondered if he ever got upset.

And he was also a larger-than-life character who always lit up the after-match celebrations with various jokes.

For over a decade, Muzukuru paraded his array of midfield wizardry at Arcadia United, Dynamos, Black Rhinos and the Warriors in the late ‘70s and ‘80s Golden Era after he left Morgan High School.

Many of us, who had known about his illness after he was diagnosed with the dreaded ailment three years ago, still believed if there was anyone who could beat this, then it would be the creative midfield genius.

But how wrong and foolish we all were because the man who lit up stadiums here, and elsewhere on the African continent with his imperious vision and dribbling ingenuity, peacefully breathed his last at his Braeside residence on Sunday afternoon.

His long-time colleague and former teammate at Arcadia United, Charlie Jones, said the local football fraternity had been robbed of a football great.

“I am really saddened by Mids’ passing on because we had talked about various soccer development projects once he recovered but, sadly, the Almighty decided to call him up above for more projects,” revealed Jones.

Muzukuru’s cabinet chest has various gold medals, among them the Super League title with Dynamos in 1982; the North Zone Division One championship crown with Rhinos in ‘83 and the Super League’s “Cup and League double” with the army team, a year later.

That season, Rhinos fashioned a record, which still stands today, of being the first and only side to win the league title in their debut top-flight season.

That Rhinos squad is arguably the finest.

It had the likes of Stanford “Stix” Mutizwa, Stanley “Sinyo” Ndunduma, Japhet Mparutsa, Gift Makoni, Maronga Nyangela, Jerry Chidawa, Leslie Kamuyoyo, Simon “AK” Mugabe, William Greene and William Chikauro.

Former Dynamos, Rhinos and Warriors head coach, Shepherd Murape, who brought Dhana to Dynamos from Arcadia United and then lured him to the army side, spoke of his shock when he heard the midfielder had passed away.

‘‘I am stunned . . . unbelievable because Mids was the kind of guy you never associate with death because of his jolly character.

‘‘That Rhinos side which won the League and Cup double was so amazing that my assistant, Ashton ‘Papa’ Nyazika, and I, never had to sweat hard by telling them what to do.

‘‘They were all telepathic, especially that attack-minded trio of Dhana, Mutizwa and Ndunduma .

“Players like him are so special that it takes another lifetime to produce one like him,” said Murape. A long-time fan of Arcadia United, who are now in Division Two, Funny Mushava, said there was no way one could compare today’s midfielders with the likes of Dhana.

“You see, guys like Muzukuru would make the ball ‘talk’. And that body swerve of his was pure magic. I’m almost certain he could split defences with those amazing passes with his eyes closed,” he said.

Dhana was a staunch follower of English Premiership side Liverpool, who are currently on top of the standings, and had, at the start of this season in August, predicted they would finally lift the league.

He had promised all his long-time friends who are fans of the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea, he would have the last laugh – in their faces – this time around.

And, maybe, Muzukuru might still have that last laugh from a special place up above.

Aston Villa fans hail Nakamba

BIRMINGHAM. — Aston Villa fans on Twitter are drooling over Marvelous Nakamba’s performance on Saturday.

Dean Smith’s side were held to a 2-2 draw with Burnley at Villa Park, having taken the lead on two occasions.

It was a bitterly disappointing day for Aston Villa, who have lost eight points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, but there were some positives.

John McGinn enhanced his reputation with a third goal of the season, Matt Targett made his Premier League debut and a certain Marvelous Nakamba showed English football what he could do.

The Zimbabwe international is looking like an exceptional find by Smith, who spent only £11 million on taking him to the West Midlands.

He posted another accomplished, tidy performance in midfield and one that should’ve been for a winning team.

In possession and out of it, Nakamba looks the real deal.

The Zimbabwean was a pivotal figure in Dean Smith’s side with the midfielder consistently pressuring Burnley in possession and for the majority of the time successfully intercepting the ball.

Nakamba has completely re-energised the midfield with his tenacity and artfulness impressing the Villa faithful and if he continues to make an impression on a consistent basis then he could become one of the most important players in the squad. — sb.nation/HITC.

Grace Chingoma Senior Sports Reporter
STANFORD ‘‘Stix’’ Mutizwa says Hamid Dhana, who died in Harare on Sunday and is likely to be cremated on Friday, was one of the finest midfielders to grace domestic football.

Mutizwa played alongside Dhana at Black Rhinos where, in one of their finest hours, they beat Zambian club Power Dynamos in the Champions League.

“I first played against him when he was at Arcadia and I was at CAPS United,’’ said Mutizwa.

‘‘Then we met at Black Rhinos during the formation of Rhinos in 1982. I was part of the formation but, unfortunately, didn’t play due to contractual issues with CAPS United until 1984.

‘‘We played in the Champions League and I remember we beat Power Dynamos and we were the first team to beat them (in Zambia) and made history.

‘‘They had nine players who were in the national team, the likes of the Musonda brothers Emy and Michael, Alex Chola, Peter Kaumba and Lucky Msiska.

‘‘The team was coached by Praise Mwila, Zambian first export who played at Aston Villa. We won 2-0 in Lusaka and drew 1-1 at home to qualify for the quarter-finals.

“I had a terrific combination with Joel Shambo in midfield at CAPS but l went on to have a similar combination with Dhana.

“As Black Rhinos Legends we are saddened by the death of one of us. I would like to thank wife Brigit for supporting him throughout his long illness. She did a great job.’’

Another former player Charlie White, who is based in the United Kingdom, said Dhana was a multi-talented footballer.

“Sad to hear the untimely death of Hamid Dhana. He was a multi-talented player when we were at Morgan High.

‘‘Apart from playing football, he played cricket, basketball and tennis. He would have excelled at any sport except for rugby and athletics.

“He was also good pals with ex-DeMbare players from Arcadia, Peter Sanderson and Dexter Rawson. We played together at Morgan High and Arcadia,” said White.

Former Black Aces and Chapungu linkman Moses “Gwejegweje” Chasweka said the legend still had a lot to contribute to football.

“He still had years to contribute something to football, especially now that Arcadia is back in the lower leagues. He was very humble and accessible. He was always smiling. May his dear soul rest in peace,” said Chasweka.

ZIFA also sent their condolence message.

Dhana died on the same day as former Highlanders star, Charles ‘‘Chief’’ Chilufya, who passed away in Zambia.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association joins the nation in mourning the passing of legendary former footballers, Hamid “Muzukuru” Dhana and Charles ‘Chief’ Chilufya on 29 September,’’ ZIFA said in a statement.

‘‘Chilufya played for Premier Soccer League sides Hwange FC, Railstars FC and Highlanders FC and was one of the key players in the CAF Champions League then under Eddie May.

‘‘Together with the likes of Zenzo Moyo, Joel Luphahla, Thabani Masawi, Amon Chimbalanga, Bekithemba Ndlovu and Tapiwa Kapini, they changed the face of the top-flight with their ‘never say never spirit.’

‘‘Dhana played for Dynamos, Arcadia, Black Rhinos FC and the national team, forming fearsome combinations with various players. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.’’

The Sports Commission also sent their condolence message.
