DeMbare work ethic impresses Chigowe

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
DYNAMOS interim coach Lloyd Chigowe has praised the work ethic demonstrated by his charges at training and is hoping to transform the zeal into results when they face army side Black Rhinos in a Castle Lager Premiership soccer match at Rufaro tomorrow.

The Glamour Boys are engaged in a desperate fight to survive relegation in the last five games of the season.

Chigowe, who has so far presided over three competitive matches, winning two and losing one, believes the Dynamos players have been warming up to his football philosophy ever since he took over the reins from his former boss Lloyd Mutasa.

DeMbare are in high spirits following the 2-1 win over city rivals CAPS United in the Harare Derby last week.

“When you come into a crisis-like situation, you have to quickly try to change the mindset of the players and I think they have responded magnificently.

“Like last week we had asked them to absorb the pressure against CAPS United because our observation had been that CAPS United normally tire in the second half, just like what they did against Highlanders. I think they put up a good performance in terms of work rate. They were workaholics in the first half and then the second half they went out and did the job. So with a little bit more of time, I think they will gel. But I think we are coming up right. After the win last week, the self-belief is now there,” said Chigowe.

Dynamos will, however, be missing a number of players tomorrow, who include James Marufu, Godfrey Mukambi, Ocean Mushure and Jimmy Tigere. There are also doubts over Phamakani Dube and Denver Mukamba due to lack of fitness. Chigowe, who is being assisted by Murape Murape, began his tenure with a 2-0 defeat at champions FC Platinum, just two days after they had taken over from Lloyd Mutasa. But he has since helped DeMbare reach the semi-finals of the Chibuku Super Cup while also leading them in the relegation dogfight.

Their opponents Rhinos have been unpredictable in a season they have blown hot and cold. The army side won 7-1 against Mutare City in one game and then lost the next heavily when they were thrashed 4-1 by newboys Herentals. Rhinos bounced back with a 3-1 win over in-form Triangle in the following assignment before the 1-1 draw against Harare City last week.

Maruwa, who once worked under Callisto Pasuwa at Dynamos during the trailblazing run when DeMbare bagged four consecutive titles, said a lot has changed since he left the club.

But he fears DeMbare could be difficult opponents, especially when pushed into a corner. “It’s always tough when playing against a team that is in the relegation mix. So we need to be at our best to collect points against Dynamos. Of course I worked at Dynamos at some point, but many things have happened since I left. We won four championships, but now they are fighting relegation.

“So this is going to be a different ball game altogether. Dynamos are always Dynamos, they are fighters, especially when pushed into a corner,” said Maruwa.

Rhinos will be without their skipper Bruce Homora because of suspension, but Maruwa has match winners in the likes of Lot Chiunga, Allen Gahadzikwa, Masimba Mambare,

CAPS seek to retain ‘Cup Kings’ tag

CAPS United are hoping to finally win a knock-out tournament in a decade, but the Green Machine will have to be at their best if they are to eliminate holders Harare City in the Chibuku Super Cup semi-finals. The two sides were drawn to face each other in Harare yesterday, with the other semi-final pitting Dynamos and Triangle.

The games are scheduled for next weekend.

CAPS United have struggled to retain their status as the “Cup Kings’’ of Zimbabwean football since they won the BancABC Sup8r trophy under controversial circumstances in 2008.

Now they have set their eyes on the biggest knock-out tournament in the country, which comes with a ticket to represent the nation in the CAF Confederation Cup.

But they will have to first find a way past the Harare City hurdle in the semi-final.

Harare City have monopolised the competition in the last two years and they have been in terrific form in this year’s edition as they are angling for a hat-trick of titles.

CAPS United chief executive Cuthbert Chitima said his team would not be intimidated by the Sunshine Boys’ remarkable achievements in this competition.

Chitima, however, admitted that Harare City are not an easy opponent, but reckoned Makepekepe will progress to the final and ultimately win the tournament.

“Remember there are only four teams that are left in the tournament out of the 17 clubs which took part, so it’s obvious when only four are left it becomes tough. So it’s not an easy draw against Harare City.

“These are teams playing in the league, but as CAPS United, we are ready to face anyone.

“Definitely, CAPS United will be victorious, we are going all the way to the final. This is the cup that we have been waiting for and this is the chance,’’ Chitima said.

But CAPS United will need to improve on their precision if they are hoping to win this competition.

Lloyd Chitembwe’s men have not scored even a single goal in the tournament as they progressed from the first round against Chapungu and in the quarter-finals against ZPC Kariba via penalties, but Chitima believes that it is not a sign of weakness on his team’s part.

“All the matches which we have played were decided by penalties and its part of the game as well as the rules.

“So we didn’t labour to those victories, we are in the semi-finals because we deserve to be there.

“And like I have always been saying, we are going to the final and what we want is to lift the cup.”

The administrator said his team intends to have another dance in the African Safari, where they reached the CAF Champions league group-stages in 2017 after winning the Premiership title the previous year.

“The fact that winning the Chibuku Super Cup comes with an opportunity to represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup is another motivating factor on our part, looking at the fact that we have to go back to compete in Africa. I am quite positive and confident that we will play in Africa again.”

Chitima’s Harare City counterpart Tafadzwa Bhasera welcomed the draw and warned Makepekepe to brace for a tough ride.

“It’s a fair draw, definitely. Look, we have always been like that, any team that comes our way should be the one sweating over facing the defending champions. We have got that feeling that whichever teams comes our way, we are ready. So facing CAPS United in the semi-final is not an insurmountable task.” said Bhasera.

“It will take a lot more hard work from our boys to be champions again. We believe in ourselves and what we are capable of doing. Harare City is no longer a small team. We are eyeing a hat-trick.

Bhasera said her team will be out to win the trophy for a record third time in a row.

“We won the cup in 2016 as well as last year, so we can also do the same this time around. CAPS United is a big team, but we also have an exciting band of determined individuals who know what they are doing. We have always been ready to face any team, so there is nothing to panic about.

“We play in the same league and those are the same teams which were there when we won the trophy in the past two years.

“Obviously a lot might have changed since we beat How Mine in the final last year, but we are still Harare City and we have even improved in the way we play as evidenced by our performance in the league,” Bhasera said.

But, in the meantime, both clubs have their full attention in the league where they are fighting for strong finishes.

Harare City have a date against Shabanie at Maglas tomorrow, while CAPS United are away to ZPC Kariba this afternoon.

Mangwiro eyes second Chibuku title

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
TRIANGLE coach Taurayi Mangwiro has his eyes fixed on his second Chibuku Super Cup success despite being paired with resurgent giants Dynamos for the semi-finals of the premier knock-out tournament.

Mangwiro, who won the title with Harare City three years ago, welcomed the draw that was conducted in Harare yesterday.

The other semi-final will pit CAPS United against defending champions Harare City. Organisers said the matches will be played next week at venues yet to be advised.

“On my part, it’s good I have won it before and some of the players in this team have won the NetOne One Wallet Cup before with Triangle. So I am glad to be working with this group of players who have walked this road before. We all know what it means to win silverware. There is everything to play for.

“We had said before that we are ready for any team in the last four and now that we know who our opponents are, we have to plan accordingly. First and foremost, we need to clear this hurdle and get into the final.

“Of course we know that we are coming up against a big team, but we shouldn’t be showing too much respect to Dynamos by paying attention to their past achievements. On paper, and judging by the way Dynamos have been playing this season, it’s easy to think that we are going to steamroll over them.

“But this is a different competition with different rules and different incentives. Besides the chance to play in Africa, which of course is a huge enticement to any team, there are also monetary rewards that go with winning the cup. So we will be ready for them. We know that this is where their lifeline is.

“On one hand they are fighting to survive relegation and on the other they want silverware. They will not be easy opponents,” said Mangwiro.

The Sugar Sugar Boys thrashed newboys Nichrut 5-1 in the quarter-final after earlier dismissing Shabanie Mine 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out following a goalless draw in regulation time of their first round clash.

But Mangwiro believes his side has picked up momentum.

Dynamos booked their place with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Herentals.

The tournament organisers, represented by Chibuku Brand manager Karen Dhliwayo, praised the participants in this year’s competition for demonstrating the spirit of fair play. Harare City and Dynamos, who were the first two teams from the pot following a draw of lots, will technically be the home teams.

Dynamos treasurer Moses Chikwariro, who represented his club at the draw, said the Glamour Boys are prepared for any team, although they had fancied another clash with traditional rivals CAPS United, whom they beat 2-1 in a league match last week.

“We are excited with the draw and we are hoping with the way we are playing at the moment, we will be in the finals and we are expecting to meet CAPS United for the second time in a month (if they beat Harare City). Since we have missed out on the league championship, we hope that this is the cup we will have in our shelf this year, 2018.

“As an executive, we are hoping that we will win that game. We are not yet aware of the venue, but I think, being the home team, we will be in Harare and when we are at home we have got all the weapons to win the match,” said Chikwariro.

DYNAMOS legend Moses “Bambo” Chunga is today expected to be among the guests of honour at the inaugural Mabgwe Madzima Under-20 Invitational Soccer Tournament in Chinhoyi.

The tournament will be held at Madzima Business Centre in the Chitomborwizi farming area from 9am to 5pm.

There will be four local teams contesting in the inaugural tournament and if successful, it will be made an annual event.

The four teams — Highway, Matoranjera, Chitomborwizi and Portlett — are expected to feature in today’s event, which will be a knock-out tournament with the first prize being a full soccer kit and two soccer balls, second prize being two soccer balls and the third prize will be one soccer ball.

The event organiser, Englebert Runyararo Madzima, said that the purpose of the tournament is to motivate children to fulfil their dreams of playing soccer professionally.

“The aim of

the tournament is to help the children in our community to fulfil their dreams of playing soccer professionally by giving them opportunities to showcase their talent under a conducive environment. Those who excel will get noticed by various invited academies and some might even get scholarships to go to better schools where they will pursue their academic studies and playing football at the same time.

“We also want to keep the young ones occupied so that they do not do drugs due to idleness,” he said.

Apart from Chunga, the tournament will also be graced by other former top Zimbabwean soccer stars, including ex-Black Aces and national team defender Peter Manyara.

FC Platinum seek to maintain lead

Mukudzei Chingwere Sports Reporter
LOG leaders FC Platinum are hoping for perfection when they take their quest for a second Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship to relegation-threatened Nichrut at Ascot this afternoon. The champions are in a good position to retain the title after taking a five-point lead in what has been a riveting battle against fellow miners Ngezi Platinum, with as many games left before the close of the season.

Coach Norman Mapeza said his men will summon all their might to get maximum points against the relegation-threatened side as they push for another league success.

Mapeza, addressing his weekly Press conference, said the just-ended international break is likely to slow down his charges, but was quick to say his team long made a resolution to avoid losing to recently promoted teams.

The former Warriors coach said he was confident his charges would fight to keep their record intact.

Of the four teams promoted into the elite division this season, only Bulawayo Chiefs managed to collect a full set of points against the defending champions and the Shurugwi-based side will be hoping to emulate that success.

“It is the same mentality and principle that will never change, we will not lose to a team that was recently promoted into the top-flight league, I agreed with the boys long back and that still stands.

“There is no dropping points at this stage, we have to win this game, I do not care how we are going to get the points, but what we want is to win the game,” said Mapeza.

“Everybody knows that we have been having challenges every time after going for a break, we have not been doing well after these breaks, but we know the challenge we are going to be facing against Nichrut on Saturday.

“They are fighting relegation and we are also pushing for the championship and most importantly, we have been preparing for the last two weeks and everything looks okay.

“We just hope the journey to Gweru on Saturday will bring a good result back home.

“Breaks kill momentum, when we played against Dynamos we were cruising and going for the break would have a negative bearing on our momentum.

“At the end of the day, it is not only us but every club in the league might suffer the same scenario except for Dynamos, Highlanders, Herentals and others who were playing in the Chibuku Super Cup, so we cannot complain but we have to maximise the chances we get against Nichrut,” said Mapeza.

Chibuku separates giants

DYNAMOS and Caps United, two of the giants remaining in the Chibuku Super Cup, were kept apart for the semi-finals of the competition, following a draw that was conducted in Harare yesterday.

BY HENRY MHARA

DeMbare will host Triangle while the Green Machine has an equally tough assignment against the tournament defending champions Harare City.

All the four are out of the league title reckoning, and winning this tournament will go a long way in appeasing their fans.

More so, the rewards of lifting the Cup are massive. To add to a cool $75 000 winning prize, the winners will also get a ticket to represent the country in the Caf Confederations Cup.

Dynamos, Harare City and recently Caps United, have all tasted the sweetness of playing in the African Safari before, and will be hoping to take full advantage of the opportunity presented by winning the tournament.

“We are just 180 minutes away from Africa,” Harare City chief executive officer Tafadzwa Bhasera said with a broad smile on her face.

“The draw was fair, we were prepared to face any opponent that we were given. We are ready to defend our title, but it would obviously require a lot of hard work, as the other teams are also aware that winning the Chibuku Super Cup would mean everything to their season.

City won this competition last year but passed on the chance to play in Africa after they were demoted to Division One. They were only readmitted back into the top flight after How Mine pulled out.

“Winning the competition will be a morale booster for the players and the technical team, the administrators and the supporters of course. Basically, the club as a whole. We are happy as a club with the performance of the team. Remember last year we went under the tree, so to say. But we know they can do better than what is happening right now, but we are happy,” she added.

To reach this stage, City accounted for Bulawayo City and Highlanders. But they will have to be at their best to pass the next hurdle.

Caps United chief executive officer Cuthbert Chitima expects a tough duel, but is already looking beyond this fixture.
“Its not an easy draw for us, neither is it for Harare City but these are teams that are playing in the Premier League so as Caps United we are ready to face anyone. Definitely Caps will be victorious. This is the Cup we have been waiting for. It is our time.

“We are in the semis because we deserve to be there. We are going to the finals and what we want as Caps United is to lift the trophy. This is the only opportunity that we have of going to Africa and I’m quiet positive and confident that we are going back to Africa.”

United represented the country in the Caf Champions League last season, reaching the money spinning group stages of the competition. The benefits of reaching the stage went beyond financial, with the bulk of their stars getting good contracts outside the country after impressing in the competition.

Dynamos have had a terrible season, and are fighting to keep themselves in the league next season.

While they are generally expected to escape relegation, winning this tournament will provide enough consolation for their restive fans.

The club’s treasurer Moses Chikwariro is confident that his side will go past Triangle, and wants to meet Caps United, whom they beat 2-1 in the league recently, in the final.

“We are excited with the draw and we are hoping with the type of play we have at the moment, we will be in the final.
We expect to meet Caps United for a second time in a month and we hope that since we have missed on the league championships, this is the cup we will have in the cabinet this year. We are hoping to win against Triangle, because we are the hosts and when we are at home, we have all the weapons to win.” The games will be played next weekend.

ONE of Zimbabwe’s top junior motocross riders Regan Wasmuth is set to take a giant leap towards his dreams of becoming a fully-fledged professional rider when he joins fellow Zimbabwean biker Tanya Muzinda at the 47th edition of the annual Thor Winter Olympics Supercross and Motocross Championships in Florida, United States next month.

The Thor Winter Olympics is presented by Pro Circuit and is one of the premier amateur motocross racing events in the United States as it brings together riders from all over the world.

Riders battle for six days to be crowned Olympiad Champion. It is also a part of the American Motocross Championship Majors — an alliance made up of an elite group of race organisers that host premier amateur and professional motocross events in the United States.

This exciting event is held annually in November at Florida’s Gatorback Cycle Park, which is known for its mix of hard pack and sand, natural elevation changes and other obstacles.

This year’s Thor Winter Olympics Supercross and Motocross Championships are scheduled to run from November 19 to 24 and they will be graced by two of Zimbabwe’s top male and female riders Wasmuth (17) and Muzinda (14).

Wasmuth’s father, Warren, yesterday told The Herald that his son was recently invited by top American motocross coach Shannon Niday to compete at this year’s Thor Winter Olympics Supercross and Motocross Championships in Florida.

Warren said this will be Regan’s last chance to compete overseas as a junior rider as he will be moving up to race in the seniors MX2 or MX1 Class next year.

And Regan will wave goodbye to the junior ranks when he competes in next month’s Thor Winter Olympics Supercross and Motocross Championships in Florida where he will be joined by the poster-girl of local motocross — Tanya Muzinda.

Muzinda recently received her visa from the American Embassy in Harare and this will pave the way for her to compete at the 2018 Thor Winter Olympics Supercross and Motocross Championships in Florida next month.

Muzinda was recently invited by organisers of the race, Unlimited Sports MX, through their president Wyn Kern.

She will be accompanied to the United States by her father/trainer Tawanda and mother Adiyon.

Her two-month stay in the United States is being facilitated by her international manager Stefy Bau, a three-time World Women’s Motocross Champion from Italy.

Why Mnangwagwa Is Wooing White Zimbabwean Sports Stars

The Conversation

Sport in general, and particularly gifted sports people, have been known to rouse feelings of national unity. In the process, they instil a sense of patriotism and pride in their countries.

Good examples include George Weah, the soccer legend from Liberia now the president of his country and Imran Khan, the cricketing star from Pakistan, now its prime minister. Notable sports figures have managed, to some extent, to unify their troubled nations. In the process they have shown how powerful a force sport can be.

This salient observation has not escaped Zimbabwe’s newly elected president, Emmerson Mnangagwa. In a bid to restore and paper over the badly damaged relations between the governing Zanu-PF party and the country’s white community both inside and outside Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa has appointed the former swimming sensation, Kirsty Coventry as Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.

The 35-year-old is a seven-time Olympic medallist. She is the only African to break the 1:00 min barrier in the womens 100m backstroke. She also has the highest number of individual Olympic medals of all female swimmers in history.

But Coventry’s appointment is not where Mnangagwa ended. He also reached out to the flamboyant footballer, Bruce Grobbelaar, the former goalkeeper for the Zimbabwean national football team as well as British football club Liverpool whose nickname is “Jungleman”. In an interview he described Mnangagwa’s call which started with the president saying: “Hello, Jungleman, how are you?”

By wooing Coventry and Grobbelaar, Mnangagwa is clearly hoping to achieve a number of outcomes. The first is that he is hoping to repair the damaged relations between Zanu-PF and Zimbabwe’s white community. As a long shot, he might also be hoping that this will help normalise relations with the West which could, in turn, unblock much needed foreign direct investment.

Working with the hugely popular Coventry and equally liked Grobbelaar could also lure the young urban electorate back to Zanu-PF. They left the party in droves for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) when it was launched in 1999.

The history

When Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980 the country’s population stood at just over 7 million people. The white population was around 230 000. This began to decline steadily white Zimbabweans began to emigrate to countries such as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The exodus increased significantly after 2000, when the Zanu-PF government began embarking on violent land grabs that resulted in Zimbabwe’s economy going into meltdown.

The last census in 2012, put the number of white Zimbabweans at 28 000. This community has been very active and is still, to a limited extent, influential, in sectors such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing. Whites have also traditionally been active in sports such as cricket, rugby and swimming.

Zanu-PF’s fractured relationship with the white community dates back to Robert Mugabe’s rule. He presided over the breakdown in relations when he began implementing a violent land reform programme which ended up benefiting Zanu-PF members and chiefs.

But relations hadn’t always been bad between the party and white Zimbabweans. At the advent of independence, Mugabe famously pleaded with the white community:

Stay with us, please remain in this country and constitute a nation based on national unity.

And in 1980 Mugabe retained white Zimbabweans such as Ken Flower. Flower had been in charge of Rhodesian prime minister Ian Smith’s intelligence services which had been accused of masterminding the assassination of some of Zimbabwe’s leading nationalists such as Herbert Chitepo and Jason Ziyapapa Moyo.

Mugabe also appointed white ministers such as Dennis Norman (agriculture) and advocate Chris Andersen (mines) to his first cabinet.

But this rosy relationship turned sour in 1999 when the white community rejected a draft national constitution that included a clause on redistributing the country’s most fertile land – the bulk of which was in the hands of around 4 000 White farmers – without compensation.

This set the scene for violent land seizures. This, in turn, resulted in sanctions being imposed on Zimbabwe by a number of Western nations. These only served to harden Mugabe’s resolve towards the white farmers. In a presidential election rally in 2002, he thundered

Our party must continue to strike fear in the heart of the white man, our real enemy.

In the intervening years Zimbabwe’s political and economic landscapes have continued to deteriorate as the country became a pariah state and a basket case. This was largely because of the punishing ramifications of the sanctions and the corruption and ineptitude of the Mugabe regime.

Zimbabwe’s economic crisis reached its peak in 2008 when hyperinflation reached a stupendous 231 million percent, officially, even though leading inflation experts such as Steve Hanke estimate that the country’s inflation rate far exceeded the official figure.

Picking up the pieces

For his part, Mnangagwa has always cultivated good relations with white Zimbabweans. This goes back to the 1980s when he had cordial working relationships with people like Flower who were in intelligence.

In later years, Mnangagwa has been linked to a number of white business people in some of his business ventures.

In mending the relations with the white community by roping in Coventry and Grobbelaar, Mnangagwa might just have pulled off a masterstroke. He must be hoping it will eventually help extricate Zimbabwe from its economic quagmire.

Chunga calls for harnessing of talent

Sydney Kawadza in Chinhoyi

THE abundant football talent found across Zimbabwe should be harnessed for the country to go beyond its huge potential and win notable tournaments across the continent.

Zimbabwe, a nation that has produced some best exports, could also be a huge source of talented sports-people if the necessary measures available are put into practice.

This, according to soccer legend and former Warriors captain Moses “Bambo’’ Chunga, entails active participation from both the government and the corporate world.

The Dynamos legend, who was a guest of honour at the inaugural Mabgwe Madzima Under-20 Invitational Soccer Tournament in Zvimba during the weekend, said the government had set the right tone for the development of sport in Zimbabwe.

“There are legislative and other provisions that can promote the development of sport in Zimbabwe and in soccer, there is abundant talent, not only for Zimbabwe to win major tournaments but to export more players,” Chunga said.

The tournament held at Madzima Business Centre in the Chitomborwizi farming area featured four local teams contesting in the inaugural tournament and is expected to be an annual event.

The four teams — Highway, Matoranjera, Chitomborwizi and Portlett — played in a knock-out tournament with Chunga picking up seven outstanding players who will be invited to Harare to train with Castle Lager Premier Soccer League teams.

The tournament’s winners received a full soccer kit and two soccer balls, second prize being two soccer balls and the third prize one soccer ball.

Chunga also hailed efforts by the tournament’s organisers for nurturing talent in the rural areas where there was nascent talent waiting to be discovered.

“The corporate world should join hands with organisers of such tournament so that our national team selectors can have a large pool of players to select representatives for our country,” he said.

The event’s organiser, Englebert Runyararo Madzima, said the family organised the tournament to help nurture children’s talents while helping fulfil their dreams of playing professional soccer.

“If my memory serves me well, I think there was one player from our community who played in the then Super League.

“However, in athletics our community has great ambassadors to emulate the Gwanzura brothers who rose from this community and landed in America and Canada through sheer determination and persistence.

“We should have a culture as a community to laud such achievements by our own and use such achievements to inspire future generations within the community in whatever sport they pursue.” Madzima called for the training of teachers in various sporting disciplines to upgrade their skills so that they impart best skills to the children.

The recent appointment of swimming legend Kirsty Coventry as the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation has brought excitement and hope for the growth of sp

Hamilton waits for F1 title

AUSTIN. – Lewis Hamilton was forced to wait for a fifth world Formula One title when he finished third at the US Grand Prix on Sunday as Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen took a first victory in over five years.

Title rival Sebastian Vettel in another Ferrari was fourth meaning the championship race will probably be decided in Mexico next weekend instead.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished second after starting in 18th place.

Hamilton says Mercedes already understand more of the reasons for their surprise US GP struggle and will “go back to the drawing board” for Mexico, when he will have a second chance to clinch his fifth world title.

Hamilton was made to wait at least seven days to seal the Drivers’ Championship after slipping from pole position to third place in a pulsating Austin race won by Raikkonen.

Hamilton has won the previous four races but conceded Mercedes “weren’t quick enough” in Texas when he was beaten by both a Red Bull and a Ferrari.

“There are a lot of things that we could have done better and there are certain things that weren’t optimum for us which made it look even worse than it was,” said Hamilton, who was the only top-five finisher to make two pit stops.

“Ferrari gained a bit of pace and we seemed to lose a little bit of pace here. But we’ll go back to the drawing board and that’s why we’re the best because as a team because in there no one is to blame, we all take the blame                  together.

“I know the guys will do great analysis from today over the next couple of days and we’ll come back stronger the next race.”

Hamilton: Mercedes know where performance was lost.

Return of a hungry Ronaldo worries United

$

PARIS. – A familiar face returns to Old Trafford tonight for a critical Champions League soccer showdown.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus enter the match as the class of Group H, two points above second place Manchester United. Both sides feel frustrated after unsatisfying draws at the weekend.

Ronaldo will always be fondly remembered at Old Trafford, but as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner rolls back into town this week, this former hero may be the last sight Manchester United want to see.

Ronaldo made his name in Manchester, scoring 118 goals, winning three English Premier League titles and the first of his five Champions Leagues before a then world record move to Real Madrid.

Tonight he returns in the colours of Juventus, eager to let his football do the talking with the cloud of a rape accusation in the United States dating back to just before he made the move to Madrid in 2009 blighting his early days with the Italian giants.

Ronaldo strongly denies the allegation and has been backed by his club, but it remains to be seen if the hero worship afforded to the Portuguese on his last visit to Old Trafford in 2013 is dialed down a little by the United fans.

That night he broke United hearts, none more so than his old mentor Alex Ferguson in what proved to be his last European match in charge with the winning goal in a contentious tie.

“It was an unbelievable night, a very emotional night and what the supporters did for me was massive,” he said of his reception.

Ronaldo, though, has little room for sentiment when it comes to furnishing his own legacy. Five years ago, his mission to was to land Madrid’s long-awaited 10th European Cup. It took an extra year, but he eventually did so, as well as an 11th, 12th, and 13th before departing this summer. That is how Ronaldo rolls, and no one is more aware of that than his manager the night he last triumphed in Manchester, and now United boss, Jose Mourinho.

“Cristiano is still a top player. I think he likes to come back here, he did when he was with Real Madrid. But, of course, when he returns with a new team he comes to do a job, for them.”

On Saturday, the Reds blew a golden chance to end Chelsea’s unbeaten run and send shockwaves through the English Premier League.

Antonio Rudiger’s free header gave the hosts an early lead, but an inspired United emerged from the dressing room at half-time and flipped the script behind an Anthony Martial brace.

But, during the lengthy second half stoppage-time, that suspect defence broke down again. Ross Barkley slammed home the equaliser after United failed to clear the ball off a set-piece. What should have been a statement win for Manchester United instead ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

Afterwards, José Mourinho sounded unimpressed with the point: “If you say before the match one point at Stamford Bridge, it’s always a good result because it’s so difficult for teams to win here. But after the game, the way the game was, it’s an awful result for us and a phenomenal result for them.”

United can’t keep digging themselves a first-half hole only to switch on after the break. That might work against Newcastle, but not Chelsea. And certainly not Juventus. Before Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Genoa, Massimiliano Allegri’s side had won all 10 games this season. They’re well clear atop the Italian Serie A table and already look all but certain to make it eight Scudetti in a row. For Juve, though, this season isn’t about domestic honours.

THE strongly fancied three-year-old filly, Mia Finola, recorded her fourth win from eight starts in the ZRP Fillies Mile at Borrowdale Racecourse on Sunday.

Mia Finola, who runs under the leading Zimbabwe trainer for the 2017-18 racing season, Bridget Stidolph, hit most of the high notes on Sunday afternoon, saddling four of the winners on the seven-race Borrowdale Park card. She is owned by Newbury Racing and was bred by Piemonte Stud and regular partner Calvin Habib was in the irons.  The winning margin was 1.25 lengths and Missy Franklin was second as Party In The Park was third while Madonna’’s Flame completed the places.

Stidolph also had Coastal Torrent winning the 260 metres Maiden Plate and The Great Britain (GB) gelding was having his first outing at Borrowdale and had Collen Storey, as the pilot.

Coastal Torrent demolished this field and is definitely one to look out for in future. The newcomer bred by Ascot Stud managed to beat stable companion Akon Cagua by five lengths.

The somewhat unfancied Christofle, having his third start at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, and back over a shorter trip, won the 1200 metres MR 65 Handicap, beating Cool Solution by half a length.

By Tiger Ridge (USA) the four-year-old is trained by Bridget Stidolph and was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein.

Mourinho dismisses Real speculation

MANCHESTER. – Jose Mourinho has dismissed speculation he could return to Real Madrid and insisted he would like to stay at Manchester United beyond his current contract.

Mourinho has been linked with the job at the Bernabeu as a replacement for Julen Lopetegui, who has struggled since taking over in the summer. Madrid lost 2-1 at home to Levante on Saturday, a third successive defeat and only narrowly avoided a club-record goal drought.

Mourinho, who signed an extension at Old Trafford in January which could keep him at the club until 2021, is under pressure with United 10th in the English Premier League table, but the 55-year-old insists he is not thinking of heading back to Spain. “My future is here,” Mourinho told a news conference yesterday ahead of the Champions League clash with Juventus. “I have a contract and until the final days of my contract I only think about Manchester United. I would like to stay after my contract runs out as well.”

Mourinho has confirmed Alexis Sanchez will not face Juventus after missing training at Carrington yesterday morning. Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Scott McTominay and Phil Jones are also missing.

“The players you saw are the players that are available,” Mourinho said. “There is nothing to hide and Alexis is out.” Mourinho also took the chance to plead with Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri to give Marco Ianni a second chance following the touchline incident at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Ianni goaded Mourinho after Ross Barkley’s stoppage time equaliser – something Sarri was forced to apologise for after the game.

Phil Neville has called for Chelsea’s second assistant to be sacked but Mourinho wants Ianni to remain on Sarri’s staff. “I want to thank Sarri for his honesty, I want to thank Chelsea for its honesty, too,” Mourinho said. “But I’m not happy that it is going too far with the young boy, I don’t think he deserves more than what he got.

“He apologised to me, I accept his apologies, I think he deserves a second chance, I don’t think he deserves to be sacked. His club was strong with him and he went through a situation he recognises he was wrong.

“So I hope everybody does the same as I did which is not to disturb a career of a young guy which is probably a great guy, is probably a coach of great potential and I’m not happy with it more than that.

“It is end of story, with me, in the minutes he apologised to me. But I would really like the boy not to go through more than that. Let him work, everybody makes mistakes, I made mistakes, I hope they let the kid go.”

Harare City stand in Ngezi’s way

AFTER delivering the final punch that knocked the life out of poor Shabanie and confirmed their relegation into Division One on Sunday, Harare City look to hand another blow to title-chasing Ngezi Platinum Stars when the two teams clash in a Castle Lager Premiership tie at Rufaro tomorrow.

The Sunshine City Boys were unforgiving as they dismissed the Zvishavane team at Maglas, courtesy of a late solitary strike by substitute Tatenda Tumba.

The result condemned Shabanie to the second tier world of Division One football while taking the visitors to within three points of their targeted fourth place.

Barely three days after pushing Alexio Sigion’s team down to the second-tier league, Harare City could also erase faint title hopes for Ngezi Platinum at Rufaro tomorrow.

With Ngezi Platinum, seven points adrift of leaders FC Platinum, the Mhondoro team will surrender the chase for a maiden title if they lose to Harare City while the latter record a victory at home to Chicken Inn on the same afternoon.

With only four rounds of fixtures remaining on the Premiership calendar, FC Platinum could be crowned champions as soon as tomorrow if Ngezi surrender the maximum points to their hosts while the reigning champions collect a full set of points in their own game.

Harare City are keen to finish the marathon in the top-four and their coach Mark Harrison has since warned Ngezi to brace for a tough ride. Harare City fell 1-3 to Ngezi in the reverse fixture and they will be out for revenge.

The Sunshine Boys had initially set their target on just surviving relegation, but after putting some fine displays, they have since revised that and are now aiming for a top-four finish.

Harrison reckons that his team have to beat Ngezi Platinum if they are to retain those aspirations.

“I am glad my charges are displaying some good show which is very encouraging. We played according to instruction and bundled out Shabanie and on Wednesday (tomorrow), we are going all out for three points.” said Harrison.

“We know it will not be easy beating Ngezi Platinum at a time that they are fighting for every point to try and wrestle the championship from FC Platinum.

“They are not a bad team but we are not exerting any pressure on ourselves and that will give us an advantage.

“We are playing against them at home on a turf which we are familiar with, which allows us to play good passing football. “They are fighting for what they are fighting for but we will not aid their cause. We have our own targets and we should keep on pushing.

“Our game against Ngezi Platinum Stars will most predictably be tough, I mean very tough but we want it as much as they do.”

Pasuwa in winning start

Sports Reporter
FOUR years after his last dance with club football, former Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa is back in the trenches of the league game and got off to a good start in his new job as head coach of Malawian soccer side Nyasa Big Bullets at the weekend.

Pasuwa last Friday ended a long hiatus from active coaching that spanned nearly two years, when he inked a short-term contract with the Malawian giants.

He has been out of a job since parting ways with the Warriors after their failed African Cup of Nations campaign in Gabon in February last year.

As he returned to the coaching trenches, Pasuwa got the kind of welcome he desperately needed when his side beat Dwangwa United 2-0 at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday afternoon and edged closer to winning the Malawian TNM Super League title. Bullets opened up a four-point lead over second-placed Silver Strikers with three games in hand.

The ex-DeMbare coach was unveiled by the club on Friday with the mandate to win the championship and lead them into CAF Champions League.

Big Bullets marched closer to the title after a strike in each half from Chimango Kayira and Chiukepo Msowoya. As much as it was a good take off for Pasuwa, the victory eased pressure on the entire technical panel after the club had experienced a barren spell stretching more than three games.

Pasuwa, who also played and was linked with a coaching role at Be Forward Wanderers early this year ahead of their Champions League participation, has been in negotiations with Bullets since coach Rodgers Yasin and his deputy Elias Kananji were sacked early this month.

The duo was fired following a disappointing loss of form and their failure to meet their targets.

Nyasa Bullets top of the 16-team league table with 55 points from 23 games. They opened a four-point barrier between them and the second-placed Silver Strikers, who, however, have played three games more. Bullets, who were adopted by former Malawian President Bakili Muluzi in 2003, boast of 13 league titles, a CAF Champions League group stage appearance and are also on course for their 14th league title. Pasuwa joins Bullets with a rich CV having led Harare giants Dynamos on an unprecedented run of four consecutive Premiership titles between 2011 and 2014.

He also helped the Warriors qualify for last year’s Nations Cup finals in Gabon, his team achieving the feat with a game to spare.

Bullets CEO Fleet-wood Haiya said the club has set him the target of lifting the Malawi league title and guarantee participation in next season’s Champions League and with ambitions to reach the group stages. Haiya said they have given Pasuwa a two-and-half month contract with a long term agreement on the horizon if he impresses.ort in Zimbabwe.

Masakadza rues death bowling

DHAKA. – Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza blamed death-over bowling for his side’s 28-run defeat against host Bangladesh in the first ODI at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.

Visitors Zimbabwe were in the driving seat in the game at a stage when the Tigers were reeling on 139/6 in 29 overs.

But opener Imrul Kayes produced a crucial century and a record 127-run seventh-wicket stand with all-rounder Saifuddin to bring Bangladesh back into the game.

Zimbabwe in the last 10 overs leaked 85 runs courtesy a couple of dropped catches and misfields on the boundary, topped by aggressive batting from Imrul and Saifuddin.

“It’s fine lines,” lamented a disappointed Masakadza to the media on after the match.

“I thought if the catches had been taken definitely it would have been a turning point. But it’s fine lines in cricket. Sometimes you get those and sometimes you don’t. (Yesterday) we did not get it and that had set us to the back foot,” said the Zimbabwean skipper. With 272 runs to get, Zimbabwe imploded after a decent start.

Masakadza’’s needless run out and left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam dismissing wicketkeeper-batsman Brendan Taylor and all-rounder Sikandar Raza by two stunning deliveries rattled the chase.

At a stage, even 200 looked a distant thing but all-rounders Sean Williams and Kyle Jarvis exhibited some big hitting to take the score past the 240-run mark. Williams remained unbeaten on a 58-ball 50.

“I thought the guys played really well to get us that close. I did not really think we could get where we got to. Like I said we lost the last block on 10 with our bowling quite badly which really set us back. If we had bowled better in the death we would not have been chasing so many runs. We won the one in the batting but we lost the one in the bowling by too far,” the Zimbabwe opener explained.

“I think there are lots of positives to be taken from this game. So it is not going to be really that hard. You just need to make sure we win a few more blocks of 10 other than we did. And just push a little bit from where we were,” said the 35-year old.

THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship title is now virtually for FC Platinum to lose after the defending champions took giant steps towards the Promised Land at the weekend by opening a seven-point lead at the top.

In fact, the Zvishavane platinum miners could wrap up a second successive title race tomorrow if they win their home match against Chicken Inn in the event that their nearest rivals Ngezi Platinum lose away to Harare City.

FC Platinum moved to 68 points following the 1-0 away to Nichrut while Ngezi continued to lose ground with a goalless draw against Chapungu which left them on 61 points.

Norman Mapeza’s men will move to 71 points tomorrow if they are victorious and will have an unassailable 10-point lead if Ngezi lose to Harare City with three games remaining in the season.

FC Platinum gaffer Norman Mapeza nevertheless explained that things are not as easy as they look.

The champions host Chicken Inn tomorrow at their Mandava fortress and will play relegated cross town rivals Shabanie Mine next.

In their last two games, they host Ngezi Platinum before travelling to Bulawayo to bring the curtain down on the 2018 season with what is most likely to be a dead rubber against Highlanders. However, despite what looks like a favourable fixture schedule ahead and with the way closest rivals Ngezi Platinum have been blowing hot and cold, Mapeza insisted that it is not over yet.

“It is about mental strength, we have travelled and like I said during the first half of the season it is a marathon.

“(It is like) we have been running for about 996km and it is only four kilometres to go we have to push, these last four games will not be easy for us but we just have to push,” he said.

“We still have two more games away from home and I have talked to the boys we still have to push.

“If we maintain the same mentality with the same attitude like we did against Nichrut I think we will be okay,” said Mapeza.

FC Platinum forward Rodwell Chinyengetere has proved himself a cut above the rest in what has largely been a mediocre season.

Chinyengetere, who is favourite to retain the Soccer Star of the Year award scored the solitary goal at Nichrut.

He has now moved his goal tally to 16 and is also leading the race for the Golden Boot award. The miners are out of the Chibuku Super Cup and will have another mini-break before the league’s deciding matches.

SHOW US RESPECT

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor

ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa has demanded that his leadership be accorded respect as they battle to keep national football afloat in a tough operating environment under which many an institution could easily have closed shop.

The association has battled long and hard in a harsh economic climate to ensure that national teams fulfil their international obligations with Chiyangwa, his deputy Omega Sibanda and board member Philemon Machana the principal figures in that tireless fight.

The latest of such crucial obligations were the back-to-back African Cup of Nations qualifying matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo where ZIFA had to part with more than $200 000 to ensure a successful fulfilment of the home and away assignments.

Yet in fulfilling such international obligations for the Warriors, the Mighty Warriors and the Young Warriors, the association have had to dig deeper into their own resources and rely on the ingenuity of their board.

It is against this background that Chiyangwa believes his leadership deserves some respect for bringing back a business approach to an institution that had earlier in 2015 been declared technically insolvent, only for the Sport and Recreation Commission to sit on the findings of the Obadiah Moyo probe team.

The ZIFA boss has been telling those who care to listen, especially those in a poisoned football environment that his board needed to make some tough business decisions for the association to stay afloat and ensure that the Warriors are back playing again.

As the Warriors stand on the threshold of a return to the Nations Cup show-piece, Chiyangwa said his ZIFA would continue with their business approach and ensure there is stability in all of the domestic game’s organs.

The Harare business tycoon had earlier also taken time to tell listeners on Capitalk 100.4 FM that his board would continue to pull all the stops to ensure they fulfil their mandate to govern and develop the game in the country.

A case in point is when the Warriors travelled to Kinshasa where they had to source for the scarce foreign currency for the airfares to fly the players from their different bases in Europe and South Africa mostly for the training camp.

The association also needed the hard currency for the Warriors trip to Kinshasa, their upkeep in the DRC capital where to their credit Chidzambwa’s men went a little earlier in order to accord themselves enough time to settle down, get down to some hard work and still have occasion to recover.

“I think when I came in (December 2015) there was a crisis which you are all well aware of and I sort of came in as a crisis manager.

“We had to get rid of the negativity that had become the order of the day, there was no day that would pass without the media reporting on the negativity that was prevalent in the game.

“I am doing the best I can with the team that I have and we are not going to look back, we just want to continue to achieve more,’’ Chiyangwa said.

World soccer governing body FIFA have also restored confidence in ZIFA and have resumed release of tranches of FIFA Forward Funds upon presentation of audited accounts and budgets.

Chiyangwa admitted, however, that ZIFA still needed to improve on game management with the Warriors night match against the Leopards which raked in just over $78 000 providing them some harsh lessons from the problems encountered during that match.

ZIFA also apologised to the fans who ensured a frustrating night at the turnstiles with Chiyangwa indicating that the future solution lies in securing machines that would scan out any fake tickets.

“Zimbabwe Football Association would like to express sincere gratitude to all supporters who watched the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match between the Warriors and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday night. We are humbled by your support.  A total of 13 090 fans paid to watch the match and we collected a gross amount of $78 669,00.  However, it is the organising committee’s contention that approximately over 30 000 were at the National Sports Stadium to watch the match.

“The Association regrets the unfortunate crowd trouble and stampede which occurred at some entry points. We are very thankful that no life was lost.

“The match organisation committee which comprises of all relevant stakeholders met on Friday, the 19th of October to introspect on what went wrong and to proffer solutions going into the future.

“We would like to inform our beloved fans that gates were opened at 4pm, well ahead of the 7pm kick-off.  Twenty-one (21) gates were opened out of the thirty (30) gates because the other nine (9) were not functioning,’’ ZIFA said in a statement.

But it is the bigger picture of the achievements that the national teams have recorded that Chiyangwa, who also dramatically rose to become the COSAFA president and a member of the CAF executive committee, believes even their biggest critics and detractors, needed to respect them.

ZIFA have also opened up to players around the globe who are of Zimbabwean origin to take a crack at selection into the Warriors.

As a result of that new approach, Nottingham Forest defender Tendayi Darikwa and CEFN Druids’ Alec Mudimu have already made their mark in the Warriors with more players such as McCauley Bonne and Kelvin Lunga among those expected to regularise their documents before the 2019 Nations Cup qualification campaigns ends.

The ZIFA boss is well aware of a number of machinations that have been made to try and make football ungovernable while others have been clandestinely working to dislodge his

board via what he termed “The Pull Him Down Syndrome’’ And hoping to use results to strengthen their agenda.

Chiyangwa also insisted that one of the major distinctions between his leadership and some previous administrators was that he had not come at the association to make a living.

“We had people who were in football for money, people that were fleecing this association for their selfish gains and when we came in we said let anyone who is owed by ZIFA bring physical proof of what they did and they all ran away.

“ZIFA’s current position is very good, we don’t want people who will destroy our game anymore but if one thinks he wants to come on board, let him or her do so. Certainly I cannot please anybody but if people want our football, our Zimbabwe to shine, they must give me that space and let me do my job.

“ZIFA was broke before because anyone could make a decision, some bad decisions which would not ensure that the players would still be able to come here and play. All I want is for Zimbabweans to enjoy their football again and to provide a platform for players to come and express their talents and put the country on the map.

“Football is business and in business you cannot afford to be apologetic,” said Chiyangwa.

Chiyangwa also laughed off at suggestions that he needed to step aside from the game and focus on his position in parliament arguing that many football administrators across the continent have been politicians but still holding offices at their various associations.

“Are people aware that the man I campaigned for to be CAF president (Ahmad) was a politician, a speaker of parliament (of Madagascar)? A number of FA presidents we have now are also politicians but like we are saying as long as one meets the requirements as spelt out in the constitution let them come on board and be in the race,” said Chiyangwa.

ZIFA’s election season is now heading towards its business end with nominations now open for those seeking places on the board.

Nichrut appoint Ngore new coach

Mukudzei Chingwere Sports Reporter
Nichrut have appointed former ZIFA High-Performance Committee member Michael Ngore to take charge of the team’s remaining four league matches as they push for survival.

The Shurugwi-based side’s technical department was left handicapped following the injury to coach John Nyikadzino who was involved in a road accident on the Shurugwi-Gweru highway on his way to a league match against Harare City.

In his absence the miners have struggled in the elite division and are now deep in the relegation zone following their defeat to FC Platinum at home on Saturday.

Last week they had settled for former Dynamos assistant coach Philemon Mutyakureva to take charge of the team, but the deal collapsed after they failed to agree on personal terms with the gaffer.

Nichrut chief executive Admire Hapazari told The Herald that they have roped in Ngore to help the team avoid demotion with plans to engage the former ZIFA coaches administrator full time as assistant to Nyikadzino. Ngore, who at some point acted as ZIFA technical director, is a holder of a CAF A coaching Licence.

“Yes that is very true, Ngore is now our coach and has started training with the team,” said Hapazari.

“Coach Nyikadzino is still injured and is likely to be out for the rest of the season. We have now agreed to have someone to come and help those who are already with the team.”

Chisora-Whyte II in ‘massive danger’

LONDON. – Dillian Whyte admits there is a “massive danger” of Dereck Chisora missing out on a rematch — and has called on his British heavyweight boxing rival to agree terms this week.

The Brixton heavyweight is training towards a possible date of December 22 at The O2, but Zimbabwe-born Chisora is still yet to agree terms for a second fight, even after hiring David Haye as his new manager last week.

Whyte is growing frustrated at the drawn out negotiations and warned Chisora that he could switch his attention to an alternative opponent, if a deal is not reached in the next few days.

“I think it needs to be done this week, if it’s going to be him (Chisora),” Whyte told Sky Sports. “There’s other options on the table we are looking at. (Promoter) Eddie (Hearn) is speaking to a few people.

“Chisora is a fight the fans want to see, and it’s a fight I want to have, because I want to bash his head in, and just get the stoppage that I should have taken care of the first time around. Let’s see.

“There is a massive danger he will miss out on a career highest pay day. At the minute, as the deal stands, it’s getting worse. I’ve got options, he ain’t really got no options.

‘‘The Anthony Joshua fight is there for me, there’s other fights that are there for me, and I’m just 30, so I’ve got so many options.”

The unlikely partnership of Chisora and Haye has not unsettled Whyte, who hopes the former WBA heavyweight champion can help to reach a resolution.

“It’s good that those two are working together, but Dereck Chisora has got no morals and no class,” Whyte added.

“This is the same man that humiliated him and beat him up. Chisora is a bit lost, so I think he needs David Haye for stability.

“I wasn’t surprised. Dereck is an idiot. He does weird stuff. A lot of what Dereck does, does not make logical sense, or financial sense.

“Haye is a bit more professional, and a bit more logical than Chisora is, but Haye is a massive ego-maniac, so you never know. He’s a lot more sensible than Dereck Chisora is, but this is David’s game we’re talking here, so I don’t know.”

Whyte remains willing to fight other contenders instead, including Cuban Luis Ortiz, who had suggested he would battle “The Body Snatcher” in Britain.

“(Dominic) Breazeale, Luis Ortiz or Adam Kownacki, [Jarrell] Miller, all of those guys,” said Whyte. “Those are the kind of guys I would like to fight, so let’s see what happens.

“Eddie is actively in talks with some of them as well.

“Ortiz is silly. Ortiz is just a desperate old man. The grandad needs some pension money, that’s all.”
