Serena, Osaka in US Open final

NEW YORK (Sky Sports) –  Serena Williams will play Naomi Osaka in the US Open tennis final today after they came through Thursday’s semi-finals.

Six-time champion Williams cruised past Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-0 before Osaka made her first Grand Slam final by beating last year’s runner-up Madison Keys 6-2, 6-4.

Victory for Williams over Osaka in today’s final will equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams (36) became a mother last year after suffering life-threatening blood clots during her pregnancy, and said post-match on Thursday: “To come from that, in the hospital bed, not being able to move and walk and do anything, now only a year later, I’m not training, but I’m actually in these finals, in two in a row.

“To come this far so fast – I’m really looking forward to the possibilities.

“I just feel like there’s a lot of growth still to go in my game, that’s actually the most exciting part,” she said.

“Even though I’m not a spring chicken, I still have a very, very bright future.”

Victory today will equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

“It is really incredible. A year ago I was literally fighting for my life at the hospital after having the baby,” said Williams, who missed last year’s US Open because of the birth of her child, Olympia.

“Every day I step out on this court I am so grateful to have an opportunity to play this sport.

“So no matter what happens in any match, I already feel like I have already won.”

Williams was out of the game for over a year after announcing her pregnancy in April 2017 and then giving birth last September.

Now, she is back playing at her home Grand Slam and looking close to her very best.

A dominant win over older sister Venus laid down a significant marker in the third round, before a straight-set win over Czech eighth seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals showed she was able to compete with the world’s best players once again.

That meant she came into her semi-final as the favourite against a player who had never before reached a Grand Slam semi-final.

But the ease with which she ran away with the match – winning 11 of the final 12 games and losing just 12 points in the second set – was startling.

“This is just the beginning. I’m only a few months in and really looking forward to the rest of the year and next year,” Williams said.

“I just feel like there’s a lot of growth still to go in my game. That’s actually the most exciting part.

“Even though I’m not a spring chicken, I still have a very, very bright future.”

Japan’s Osaka is 16 years younger than Williams and will get the chance to play her heroine in the US Open final.

Mutasa backs Shabba

Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter
DYNAMOS coach Lloyd Mutasa says his assistant Joseph “Shabba” Takaringofa has enough experience to mastermind the downfall of Highlanders in the Battle of Zimbabwe shodown at Barbourfields tomorrow.

Mutasa will be away with the Warriors as one of Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa’s assistants in the AFCON qualifier against Congo Brazzaville in Brazzaville on the same day.

“Shabba can win the match against Highlanders as he is confident and experienced enough. He is a fighter, aggressive, and has all what it takes to mastermind a win for Dynamos over Highlanders,” said Mutasa.

“In him I see as someone who can be trusted, someone who can guide the sheep to the right grazing pastures.

“I have no doubt he will be able to stand the heat at Barbourfields. After all, this is not his first time to be in the Barbourfields dugout this year as he was also there with Mutare City earlier this season.’’

Mutasa said Takaringofa showed a lot of potential when his Mutare City narrowly lost 0-1 to Bosso in May.

“Although I didn’t watch that match I was told it was a big contest in which the teams matched each other and fans were treated to some beautiful football.

“Given the two teams’ contrasting form during that period, when Mutare City were struggling while Highlanders were leading the pack, to think that Shabba’s team were just unfortunate to lose in that game, shows he is a good coach who can stand the heat against such tremendous opponents.

“The good thing this time around is that Takaringofa will be coaching Dynamos, the biggest brand in domestic football circles and although it comes with a little bit of pressure, I know he is capable of delivering the goods as he thrives under pressure.’’

Mutasa said he was confident Dynamos will beat Bosso.

“I am very confident that the team will fight for the points,’’ said Mutasa.

‘’Highlanders are a big team and they beat us in the first leg and I am glad the boys and Shabba know that we should win this one.

“We cannot fall to Highlanders twice in a single season. I am very confident the team will win the match.’’

The blockbuster showdown will be the only Premiership match on this weekend.

Stanbic tourney hailed

THE curtain came down on a fun-filled week of grassroots cricket last week with seasoned players, coaches and parents hailing the Stanbic Bank-sponsored Stragglers Cricket Festival.

Some of the current Zimbabwe players, led by their captain Hamilton Masakadza, took time from their training camp with the senior side to sign autographs and support the future stars of the game in the country.

Masakadza was joined by P J Moor, Brandon Taylor, Ryan Burl and the youngest member of the Chevrons, Liam Roche.

All the five participated in the festival when they were still at primary school from grades 4 to 7.

Former cricketer, Stewart Matsikenyere, also showed up at the festival as a parent as his 11-year-old son, Jayden, was playing.

These cricket stalwarts gave their thumbs-up to the week-long cricket festival, describing it as “the best tournament for junior cricket development in the country.’’

The annual Stragglers Cricket Festival burst into life on Monday 27 August at Hartman House and St George’s College, with over 200 boys, aged between 9 to 12, taking part, each playing five matches where they all batted and bowled.

While the matches were competitive, the Stragglers Festival organisers ensured that the highest level of fair play was upheld.

Masakadza became the youngest cricketer to score a century on Test debut at the age of 17 years and 254 days with a brilliant 119 against the West Indies.

This record has, however, since been eclipsed by Mohammad Ashraful.

“Stragglers is a very important festival and is an excellent platform for not only identifying talent but for young people to enjoy themselves playing the game they love.

‘’I definitely would like to see it continue into the foreseeable future,’’ said Masakadza.

YESTERDAY marked a new chapter in the history of sport with swimming icon Kirsty Coventry being appointed Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.

Coventry becomes the second female to hold such a portfolio in Government after former Vice-President Joice Mujuru, who held the post in the 1980s when she was Minister of Sport, Youth and Recreation.

Zimbabwe Aquatic Union president Mary Kloppers said they look forward to a future where all sport codes get the recognition they deserve.

“As the Aquatic Union we are delighted because she comes from swimming background. . .just from what she has achieved in the sporting administrative position, in the last couple of years, we really believe she is the right person for the job and she will get things done,’’ she said.

Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Aaron Jani commended Coventry’s appointment.

“This is a masterstroke, finally one of us has been appointed Minister. It’s the first time l think a Zimbabwean athlete has been honoured this way.

“This is a big step towards restoring sporting pride in Zimbabwe. I really wish the Minister well and l hope this is the turning point for all national sports. She has the stature, knowledge and respect from both domestic and international spheres,” said Jani.

The seven-time Olympic medallist with two golds, four silvers and one bronze retired from swimming after the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Earlier this year she was appointed chair of the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission.

She had been a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission since 2012.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission has received the news of the latest appointment of Hon. Kirsty Coventry with great joy and pleasure.

“This is indeed a pleasant surprise but a well-deserved appointment to one of our most distinguished sportspersons in the name of Kirsty Coventry,” said SRC corporate communications officer Tirivashe Nheweyembwa.

ZIFA, led by their president Philip Chiyangwa, joined the rest of the associations in congratulating Coventry and pledged their support.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association president, Philip Chiyangwa, the Executive Committee, the Council and the Secretariat would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Honourable Kirsty Coventry on her appointment as the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation .

“We will give her all the necessary support as she settles into her new role and we believe she has the capacity to deliver without any doubt,” said Chiyangwa.

Polo Association of Zimbabwe chairman, Bob Crossley, said they were hopeful of the future.

“I have known Kirsty a long time, she is very capable person. She has been involved as we all know in the IOC, the Olympic Committee and she is highly rated over there and she has always been very supportive of sport in Zimbabwe.”

Zimbabwe Olympic Committee president, Admire Masenda said with her experience as an athlete and administrator, she has an insight of what needs to be done.

AFCON debutants rally Warriors

AFTER playing key roles in the Warriors COSAFA Cup success story in South Africa this year, Marshal Munetsi and Aleck Mudimu are to ease into the AFCON trenches in the Warriors colours in Brazzaville tomorrow.

The Warriors left for the Central African country yesterday.

Munetsi, who plies his trade at ABSA Premiership giants Orlando Pirates, said they have to be cautious since they will be away from home.

‘’It’s quite a good experience for me as I have been selected to play a role in this AFCON qualifying match for my country,” said Munetsi.

“I am getting to my full fitness. I am happy to be here to represent the country and I will throw everything for the success of the team.

‘’It is important for us to win the match against Congo as the points will put us in a very good position.

“We have to do all we can to bag maximum points. This is my first time to participate in this tournament and, I know, we have some fantastic players in the fold who can make the country proud.

“We should qualify for the finals, that’s the only aim. We have to compete and at the end of the day, it is about how committed we are.

‘’And, from the look of things, we have a group of committed, patriotic players who are driven by the desire to do well.’’

Mudimu, who like Munetsi had a fantastic COSAFA Cup, is set to make his debut in the AFCON finals and is expecting a tough match against the Congolese.

“It always feels good for one to be called to represent their national team. I feel humbled and honoured. It’s a dream come true,” said Mudimu.

“This is a tough game and we shouldn’t take it lightly. We have to prove why we are in this exclusive group of the finest players.

“We should work hard on the day because from what we all know, it’s always difficult to play away from home. Football is the same but we have to make sure our play is compact because mistake away from home is punishable.

“This is the pinnacle of football at continental level and we should be able to rise to the occasion. It will be good for the country if we manage to post a victory in Congo.

“We stand a very good chance of qualifying for the finals if only we win this match. I think we have this advantage of having started the campaign on a high as compared to Congo, one factor which will put them under a little bit of pressure going into the match.’’

Chiyangwa scales dizzy heights

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor
PHILIP Chiyangwa continued to rise in the corridors of international football when the ZIFA and COSAFA president was unanimously endorsed as the regional body’s new representative on the Confederation of African Football executive committee.

The Harare property tycoon replaces Zambian Kalusha Bwalya who was last month handed a two-year ban from football activities by FIFA and fined $100 000.

COSAFA secretary-general Sue Destombes confirmed the regional body’s resolution in a statement issued after an executive meeting in Johannesburg yesterday.

“The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations has resolved to endorse its president Dr Philip Chiyangwa to replace Kalusha Bwalya on the Confederation of African Football Association’s (CAF) Executive Committee after a meeting held in Johannesburg on Friday.

“The position became available after Bwalya was banned from all football related activities for two years by FIFA after he was found guilty of violating articles 16 and 20 of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

“Dr Chiyangwa will be a strong candidate to replace Zambian Bwalya and is already vice-president for the Africa Cup of Nations Committee that is overseeing preparations for the 2019 event in Cameroon.

“Meanwhile, South African Football Association President Dr Danny Jordaan has been endorsed as the region’s candidate to contest the vacant seat on the FIFA General Council.

“A position on the FIFA governing body has become open after the resignation of Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi and is to be contested only by candidates from English-speaking countries on the continent.

“The seat will be filled following a vote at an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on September 30.”

Chiyangwa’s remarkable rise in just over two years has left the domestic football purring and underlines his leadership qualities which not only charmed the ZIFA assembly but transcended the country and the region’s borders.

The COSAFA president, who hogged the limelight when playing an influential role in ending Issa Hayatou’s 29-year reign as CAF president on March 16 last year, saluted his colleagues in the regional body for investing their confidence in to move to the continental body’s executive.

“It is with great humility that I have received the decision by the COSAFA executive to endorse me as the region’s representative on the CAF Executive Committee.

“I would like to thank the COSAFA executive who met in Johannesburg to make the resolution and indeed the leaders of the COSAFA member associations for once again reposing confidence in me.

“I will take this as another responsibility placed on my shoulders by the Southern African region to take my leadership of the bloc a step further and enhance COSAFA’s voice at CAF.

“As COSAFA we have our vision and views on the development of football and having someone who sits on both the COSAFA and CAF executive committees bodes well in terms of articulating the set objectives.

“I am confident that as a united bloc we will achieve great strides in growing our football on both the regional and continental levels and indeed more exciting times are in store for African football,” Chiyangwa said.

ZIFA also immediately saluted their president.

This is a kick in the teeth of some hawks within the football structures who have unsuccessfully been trying to question and undermine his legitimacy and have even enticed the Sport and Recreation Commission into trying to set up a “normalisation committee” ostensibly to restore order in ZIFA which they claimed was facing a leadership crisis.

ZIFA communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela issued the association’s congratulatory message to Chiyangwa.

“The ZIFA Executive committee, council and the secretariat would like to congratulate its President Hon. Dr Phillip Chiyangwa following his unanimous endorsement by the COSAFA congress today to sit in the Confederation of African Football Executive Committee as an Executive committee member.

“Dr Chiyangwa’s phenomenal rise in continental football will benefit not only Zimbabwe and COSAFA but football development in Africa. It is remarkable that he has risen so high but it’s also a clear testimony of his leadership par excellence and vision.

“We believe this is just a small step, even bigger things are yet to come. Congratulations, Makorokoto, Amhlophe,” Gwesela said.

It’s now 14 years since Charlie slipped into Okochamania

SHARUKO ON SAT
WEDNESDAY inevitably came and went and, for many, the dominant theme emerged from the lawmakers of the Ninth Parliament, including the country’s top two football leaders, who were sworn in to begin their adventure in the august House.

And, just a few hours after being sworn in as legislators, ZIFA boss Philip Chiyangwa and his deputy Omega Sibanda, rushed to the National Sports Stadium where they addressed the full complement of the Warriors.

You know it’s the WARRIORS WEEK when two legislators, just hours after having been sworn in, dash for a date with the senior national football team in camp for a 2019 AFCON qualifier against Congo in Brazzaville tomorrow.

You know it’s a WARRIORS WEEK when the entire ZIFA leadership, in their expensive tailor-made suits, descend on the giant stadium and, for an hour or so, take their seats on the stands, watching the boys sweating it out for the cause of their nation.

And you know it’s a WARRIORS WEEK when a good chunk of curious fans also come to the giant stadium to catch a glimpse of their boys preparing for a mission on behalf of their motherland.

When the WARRIORS WEEK comes along, as it did this week, when our boys come home in the name of either an AFCON or World Cup service for their nation, it has this amazing power to relegate everything, in our sport, into the shade.

Including, of course, the Battle of Zimbabwe tomorrow, conspicuously set at around the time the national team will be in action, with the big match in Brazzaville starting while the second half at Barbourfields will be in progress, as if to suggest DeMbare and Bosso fans don’t have any interest in watching their national team in action.

Not even the outrageous rentals of $8 000 a month for a house which the PSL have been paying for renting an Eastlea home in Harare which they converted into their headquarters could manipulate its way into the back pages of the newspapers in the week the Warriors were in town.

That the league have blown more than half-a-million dollars renting a property whose cost is not only outrageous, but borders on flagrant abuse of public funds, paying collectively to date more than four times what would have been the cost of buying a similar property defies logic.

But, not even such a ridiculous arrangement plucked from hell, which would even not have been justifiable if the house was located in Borrowdale Brooke, or those who were forking such outrageous costs were the richest organisation in the country, could smuggle itself into the back pages during WARRIORS WEEK.

When you consider that this monthly rental translates to a staggering R123 477, using Wednesday’s exchange rate of the United States dollar to the South African rand, you probably understand why nothing can relegate the Warriors from the back pages when the boys are in town.

Especially when you realise that a cool R123 477 would be enough to pay for seven months of rentals at R18 000 a month for a three-bedroomed penthouse in Hyde Park, a wealthy suburb of Johannesburg, which billionaire businessman Richard Branson chose as the place where his airline, Virgin Atlantic, had to have their main offices in South Africa.

Or, alternatively, enough to pay for the monthly rentals of six such penthouses in this neighbourhood, which was named after London’s famous Hyde Park.

The same amount the PSL are forking into rentals for their Eastlea office would pay for a YEAR’S rentals for a better two-bedroomed apartment in Rivonia, one of the most affluent suburbs of Johannesburg, or SIX months for an elegant two-bedroomed apartment in Sandown, a stone’s throw from Sandton, built over 208 square metres.

It could also pay for a YEAR’S rentals of a three-bedroomed penthouse in Benmore Gardens, 11 MONTHS rentals for a three bed-roomed penthouse in Braynston, both prime areas in Johannesburg, 13 MONTHS of rentals for a three bed-roomed penthouse in Plumstead, with the Table Mountain in the background in Cape Town, and EIGHT months of rentals for a similar exclusive property in Three Anchor Bay in the Mother City.

But, not even all that – as ridiculous as it appears – could push the story about the outrageous rentals which the PSL have been paying, into the back pages of this newspaper because the boys who really matter in this game, the Warriors, were in town and everything else has to be relegated into the shadows.

IT’S SEPTEMBER AND IT’S ONE HELL OF A DRAMATIC MONTH

It has been quite a week to remember – Joe Mugabe, the Kode from Mabvuku, turned 50 on Monday and

this CAPS United legend told us his adventure into football is only starting.

Japhet “Shortcat” Mparutsa, a man who defined greatness between the posts playing for arguably the strongest and most consistent Dynamos side of all-time that emerged just after Independence, is back home in Mbare today to donate to the school where his career started.

It’s this old neighbourhood that Charles Mabika, a man still trapped in the beautiful romance of Afro hairstyles, who calls himself CNN, also calls home.

Long before his golden voice transformed him into the greatest football commentator this country has ever known, and before his face became a common denominator to football discussions on our national television, Mbare was his home sweet home.

Across the street, there also lived Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa, who was so good back in their days as boys in the hood, the opposition football team would always demand to be allowed the privilege of fielding an extra player whenever this genius was playing for Charlie’s team.

To them, Stix was too good he had to be counted as two players, something which Charlie’s team didn’t mind, knowing fully well their little magician would still destroy the opposition.

Maybe, it was living next door to this genius, more than his limitations as a footballer, which made a young Mabika make a decision his future in the game was not going to be best served as a player, but as a commentator.

Others will probably argue the late Evans Mambara, with his high-pitched voice style, borrowed from the legendary Denis Liwewe of Zambia, was a better commentator than Charles Mabika.

While that’s a fair argument, in a world where divergence of views is the bedrock of democracy and should be appreciated and defended, I will stick with Charlie and, in the process, also make it clear that’s not a decision to undermine the brilliance of the great Mambara.

Well, with the Warriors in town in September, for Charles Mabika, it’s a reminder of the events of September 5, 2004, when the National Sports Stadium provided a stage for events that would culminate in the commentator, and not the result from the match, making headlines around the world.

CHARLES MABIKA, JAY JAY OKOCHA AND THAT MONTH FOURTEEN YEARS AGO

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were in town that day and, with the mercurial Jay Jay Okocha at his very best, the West African giants powered to a 3-0 victory over the Warriors in that World Cup/AFCON qualifier.

But the talking point, long after that contest had ended, was the way Mabika had seemingly went into overdrive, praising the talent and performance of Jay Jay, it landed him into trouble with his superiors at ZTV.

A few days later, Charlie had been switched off the air, and his story was making headlines across the globe, including a slot on BBC.

“The recent decision of Zimbabwe Television to sack commentator Charles Mabika was a shock to viewers that loved his unique perspective on matches,’’ BBC said in their report.

“Known to his fans as ‘The Voice of Football’ and ‘CNN,’ Mabika is loved for his fast, high-pitched commentaries interspersed with jokes and humorous tales.

“Mabika began radio commentary in the mid-1980s and covered the 2004 Nations Cup finals, Zimbabwe’s first appearance, for ZTV.  But his career came to a bizarre end after Zimbabwe’s 3-0 home defeat to Nigeria’s Super Eagles in September’s World Cup qualifier.

“Labelled as being ‘biased and unpatriotic’ by ZTV executives for his praise of Nigeria’s performance, his sacking was announced on the evening news two days after the 5 September match.

“He was accused of paying too much attention to the skills of the Super Eagles and, in particular, midfielder Jay Jay Okocha. His excited description of the trademark somersaults of Julius Aghahowa, who scored Nigeria’s opening goal, also came under criticism.

“But the phone-in programme ‘This Is Football,’ formerly presented by Mabika, has had many callers asking for the return of their favourite commentator.

“However, ZTV’s head of sport, Josephine Zulu, has emphasised that he will not be allowed back (saying); “We have positioned ourselves as the leader in Zimbabwean sport and this essentially demands unswerving loyalty to the national team, whether it is winning or losing, like any employer, ZTV reserves the right to hire and fire employees, guided by both professional and legal considerations.”

But, amid all that storm, it was the way Mabika responded to those challenges that impressed many, especially his refusal to be described as someone who was not patriotic to the cause of his beloved Warriors.

“My life starts and ends with football, I love my country very much, and I will always remain the Warriors’ number one supporter,” he told the BBC.

“Football and I are inseparable, because that is the only thing I talk, eat and sleep about.”

There is no doubting Charlie’s passion for the Warriors and his country.

That is why on Wednesday, exactly 14 years to the day he ran into the challenges that saw him briefly being pushed out of the job that gave him his name and fame, he remains in the trenches of football commentary and analysis as the leading pundit of the game at the national broadcaster.

They say you can’t pull a good man down and good, old Charlie, is one of those jolly nice fellows.

And it’s refreshing that 14 years after his darkest day, when he made headlines across the world for being dismissed for doing what his then superiors felt was something unprofessional, he remains standing tall and doing what he knows best.

I am yet to meet a more passionate journalist when it comes to the Warriors than Charlieboy, and now and again, I have even clashed with him when he has felt my criticism of the team has gone beyond the acceptable, because – to good, old Charlie, this team can virtually do no wrong.

He is quick to forgive them on the occasions they fail to perform to expectations, something which was probably nurtured in the ’80s and ’90s when failure was part of their DNA and doomed AFCON campaigns were a big part of their identity and the only consistent thing about them was their inconsistency.

He will tell you, now and again, they tried their best, but unfortunately, their best was not good enough, in a graphic and remarkable illustration of a unique relationship between a team which has punched below their weight in this game, and a super fan, who is also a commentator, who has refused to let that diminish their great romance.

He has been with them from the very beginning in the ’80s when they returned to the big stage, back in the days when they were good enough to beat Nigeria 2-0 in an international friendly on August 1, 1981, to those dark days of September 5, 2004, when they slumped to a 0-3 defeat at the hands of the same Super Eagles at the National Sports Stadium.

The very game, which 14 years ago, briefly cost him his job.

He has seen the best of his Warriors – from the king himself Peter Ndlovu, at the very peak of his athletic powers to Agent Sawu establishing himself as a goal-scorer par-excellence for the Dream Team.

From Vitalis Takawira scoring a hat-trick in a four-goal demolition of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to Knowledge Musona becoming the team’s first skipper to score an AFCON hat-trick.

He has also seen the worst of his Warriors – including that destruction at the hands of the Super Eagles 14 years ago, which briefly pushed him out of a job he has seemingly been doing all his life, before he bounced back to provide the voice that has always been the team’s accompanying soundtrack.

And, tomorrow, when they plunge into another AFCON adventure away from home, he will still be with them, supporting them, as he has done all his life, praying that they do well, believing that they will script another success story.

The players have come and gone, the coaches have come and gone, but one thing has remained a common denominator – his golden voice, his distinct Afro hairstyle and his love for his national team.

A number of upstarts have also come onto to the scene, including some ambitious ones who have tried to challenge him for the throne, but good old Charlieboy has remained the leading light.

Wednesday might have brought back bad memories of that day, 14 years ago, when his romance with his team was tested by a cocktail of events beyond his control, which led to him being briefly taken off air.

But time has shown that, while challenges will come and go, they can’t wash away the reality that good old Charlieboy is a damn great Warriors fan.

And, given, he also has a love for music, he could have converted the lyrics of Don Williams’ all-time classic, “Good Ole Boys Like Me,” which, as fate might have it, was released in March 1980 on the eve of the Independence that brought the Warriors back into international football.

When I was a kid Uncle Michael put me to bed

With a picture of the Mastermind George Shaya above my head

Then daddy came in to kiss his little man

With gin on his breath and a Bible in his hand

He talked about honour, football and things I should know

Then he’d stagger a little as he went out the door

When I was in school, I ran with a kid down the street

And I watched him burn himself up on bourbon and speed

But I was smarter than most, and I could choose.

Learned to talk like the man on the six o’clock news.

When I was eighteen, Lord, I hit the road

But it really doesn’t matter how far I go

I can still hear the soft southern winds in the Mbare mango trees

And those boys from my old neighbourhood still mean a lot to me,

Stix and Japhet the Shortcat

I guess we’re all gonna be what we’re gonna be

So what do you do with good ol’ boys like me?’’

WTA backs Serena Williams

LONDON. — Serena Williams’ claims of sexism in the US Open final have been backed by the governing body of women’s tennis.

WTA chief executive Steve Simon said the umpire showed Williams a different level of tolerance over Saturday’s outbursts than if she had been a man.

She got a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for calling the umpire a “thief” in the loss to Naomi Osaka of Japan. The American said it was “sexist” to have been penalised a game.

“The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men versus women,” Simon said in a statement.

“We do not believe that this was done last night.”

He also called for coaching to be allowed “across the sport”. Umpire Carlos Ramos penalised Williams after seeing her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, making a hand gesture. The Frenchman later admitted he was trying to coach his player.

The head of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which organises the US Open, said men “are badgering the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens”.

“We watch the guys do this all the time,” USTA chief Katrina Adams said.

Mighty Warriors midfielder Emmaculate Msipa believes they have the pedigree to claim their second COSAFA Women’s Championship title when they battle it out at this year’s edition in South Africa.

The Zimbabwe senior women’s side won the tournament in 2011 when they beat rivals South Africa in the final.

Msipa was part of the team.

Banyana Banyana had won the championship three times going into the 2011 competition. The tournament took a six-year break before it returned last year and Zimbabwe, hosting the event in Bulawayo, could not retain the championship after finishing runners-up to South Africa.

Msipa missed the tournament last September due to work commitments.

But she is part of the team that will be carrying the nation’s hopes at the regional showpiece that kicks off on Wednesday.

It runs until September 22 and the Mighty Warriors are scheduled to leave for South Africa today.

NEWLY-APPOINTED Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry says she is honoured to be part of the new Cabinet sworn in by President Mnangagwa yesterday at State House. The seven-time Olympic medallist takes over from Kazembe Kazembe, who is now Information Communication Technology and Courier Services Minister.

“I am extremely honoured to be included in the Cabinet and in the ministry. So it’s a huge honour.

“It’s another way in which I can work for my country, it’s another way in which I can help uplift our country and, hopefully, bring many more athletes with me.

“It’s very exciting. I think I am definitely looking forward to the opportunities and even the challenges that lie ahead,” said Coventry.

She said for the next couple of weeks she will be reaching out to various stakeholders and advisors to hear what’s happening on the ground, so that they make informed decisions going forward.

Coventry has been part of the International Olympic Committee for the past six years and currently chairs the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

“I think that’s part of what I think is exciting. I have been learning and I have been a part of the International Olympic Committee for the last six years now.

“So I have been learning a lot about administration. I have only been retired for two years, I still consider myself a little bit of an athlete. But all of those things will help guide me in this next position.

“I think the biggest thing is that there will be a good team. I have always managed even in my sporting career to ensure that I had the best team possible that could allow me to do anything and everything that I wanted and that will not change.

“I will be assembling a great team here. I have a great team already within the International Olympic Committee. I have dedicated staff to the Athletes’ Commission and to myself in Lausanne. So, now, it’s about setting up the same sort of team and environment,” said Coventry.

She was last year elected one of the two Zimbabwe Olympic Committee vice-presidents.

As she assumes her new post, Coventry said there shouldn’t be conflict of interest regarding her position at the IOC but is still waiting for feedback from her advisors.

“I have to obviously get feedback from some of my advisors and that will be done in the next few weeks.

“As I am aware, with the International Olympic Committee, there really shouldn’t be any sort of conflict.

“Actually, I believe from what I have been told, part of the reason I was appointed to this post because of those relationships like sitting on the International Olympic Committee.

“Again, I think it all comes down to the team that I am allowed to put into place and how they can support me in achieving the goals that we want to here,” said Coventry.

Coventry’s husband Tyrone Seward and her parents also attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Chidzambwa happy with draw

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor
WARRIORS coach Sunday Chidzambwa was satisfied with the point his charges gained on the road and believes his side will get stronger as the AFCON campaign gathers momentum.

The Warriors emerged with a crucial point from their assignment against Congo at the Stade Alphonse Massemba Debat in Brazzaville following a 1-1 draw with the hosts.

Khama Billiat scored the Warriors goal. As his team prepared to leave Congo for their flight home, via a night stopover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia yesterday, Chidzambwa told The Herald from Brazzaville of his reflections on the match.

“I think the guys played well in the first half and in my view that performance deserved at least, two or more goals, but we couldn’t take all our chances,” he said.

“Those missed opportunities gave them a chance to come back. “In the second half they seized control of the midfield up until we introduced Tafadzwa Kutinyu (for Kuda Mahachi) and we improved and matched them again.

“We had another brilliant chance to score again with Knowledge, (Musona) but those things happen in football.

“But, overall, I think the guys tried their best, they were complaining that the artificial pitch was slowing the ball and they also complained of pain in the ankles.”

The veteran coach said he told his players, including Nations Cup debutants such as Wales-based centre back Alec Mudimu and Orlando Pirates’ Marshal Munetsi, to be prepared to play in any conditions.

“Although the players were complaining about the artificial turf we will get a chance to give the Congolese a good run on natural grass when they come to Harare.

“I told the guys that they need to get used to such conditions and such kind of games because that is what we will find in some parts of Africa.

“We have a very good squad and considering that we were also missing some key players because of injuries, I think we are on track,” Chidzambwa said.

Chidzambwa is hopeful that some of those sidelined by injuries would have recovered in time for the Warriors back-to-back assignments against DRC in Kinshasa on October 10 and at the National Sports Stadium on October 13.

The 66-year-old coach said he would convene a technical meeting on return home this week to ensure they have early preparations for the crunch clashes against DRC.

Chidzambwa said he was also surprised by the outcome of Liberia’s match against DRC in Monrovia.

“To me it was a surprise result. Who would have thought that Liberia could draw with DRC? It just shows that teams are improving in Africa and you cannot afford to underestimate any side anymore.

“There were so many surprise results across Africa this weekend. Comoros holding Cameroon, Madagascar drawing with Senegal, Kenya beating Ghana, Namibia drawing against Zambia, Mauritania beating Burkina Faso.

“I think we should start to prepare our team early and start by assessing the injured ones and checking who is going to be available and who hasn’t recovered before we name the team that will travel to DRC,” Chidzambwa said.

Goalkeeper George Chigova was happy with the manner in which the Warriors went about their business.

“A draw is better away, but we could have won that match. I think it was a game of two halves really and in the first half we had them under pressure, we controlled the game well and I am sure if we could have managed to get the second goal before half-time, it was going to be difficult for them to come back.

“In the second half they never gave us much time on the ball and they put us under pressure, but even though we conceded an early goal in the second half, I thought we managed to control the game and they never really threatened us that much in that second half.

“I think their midfield must not be allowed to have more numbers like what happened for some parts of the second half, but we are very happy with the way things are going for us.”

It was the first time that the big Polokwane City goalkeeper had been breached in this Nations Cup campaign after keeping a clean sheet in the 3-0 demolition of Liberia at the National Sports Stadium in the opening game in June last year.

The top two teams from each of the groups will automatically qualify for the Nations Cup jamboree being scheduled for Cameroon in June next year.

Clubs salute Jere

Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE’S Premiership clubs have hailed Farai Jere as their substantive leader, with many pinning their hopes on the Harare businessman to drive a revolution that will turn around the top-flight league.

Jere beat Triangle United’s Lovemore Matikinyidze to become the PSL’s substantive boss.

The PSL had been without a substantive leader since Peter Dube’s departure nearly two years ago.

Jere went straight into business yesterday by having a meeting with his deputy, Lifa Ncube, whom he described as an outstanding and visionary individual who can help him transform the league.

He then went on to meet the PSL secretariat, led by chief executive Kenny Ndebele, where he assured the league’s workers that their jobs were safe contrary to speculation that they will be fired should he take over.

Jere has also invited ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa to make his first visit to the PSL offices this morning as he preaches the gospel to end the boardroom battles which has plagued the two organisations in the past.

And the PSL clubs believe they have the right man for the job.

Harare City chairman Alois Masepe said they had trust in Jere.

“Harare City Football Club would like to congratulate the newly-elected Premier Soccer League chairman whom we believe will steer the ship and help transform local football to a better level.

“It is our fervent hope that he will work hard to professionalise the league. He is a man who is capable of doing wonders for the league. We should be somewhere in terms of running the league.

“Jere is a man of dignity and has always shown the zeal to administer football given the way he has managed to professionalise CAPS United.

“We will support him unconditionally in this journey. He needs support from stakeholders and I am quite convinced he will be able to deliver. We wish him the best in this journey in his four-year term at the helm of PSL,” Masepe said.

Ngezi Platinum Stars chairman, Jeremiah Gasitene, said Jere was capable of turning around the fortunes of PSL and deserves all the clubs’ support.

“We would like to congratulate him (Jere) for his election to the PSL’s chairmanship position.

“It’s a sign that the league stakeholders trust his leadership qualities. We all hope to work with him. What we do not doubt is his ability to deliver. We hope he will implement his vision well.

“We will all be looking up to him for guidance. It’s always good to have someone of repute at the helm of the PSL and we hope he will do well,” Gasitene said.

Giants Dynamos were also happy with Jere’s election with president Solomon Sanyamandwe wishing him well.

“Dynamos Football Club is fully behind the new PSL chairperson whom we are very confident will take us to the Promised Land.

“There is no doubt about his capabilities. His management skills are there for all to see. Look at how he has managed CAPS United.

“He is an accomplished administrator who deserves the post and we will support him as much as possible because we know he will take our football far.”

Premiership newboys Herentals might have missed on the chance to vote after their representative arrived at the election venue late, but they also saluted Jere.

“The experience we have had in our stay in the top-flight tells us that we needed someone of Farai Jere’s calibre at the helm of the PSL.

“We would like to congratulate him on his ascendency,” read a statement from Herentals.

The Premiership will play their first games under the Jere era when the league, which had taken a break due to international fixtures, resumes with eight matches lined up for tomorrow and one on Thursday.

Birthday Boy Nyoni Stars As Highlanders Thrash Dynamos

HIGHLANDERS captain Gabriel Nyoni celebrated his 26th birthday in style after scoring a goal and setting up another as the Bulawayo giants put Dynamos to the sword with a 3-0 victory in a rescheduled Castle Lager Premier League match at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

It took an inspired Bosso only 13 minutes to open the scoring after Tafadzwa Sibanda capitalised on some poor defending from the Dynamos defence to nod the hosts ahead from Nigel Makumbe’s corner kick.

The visitors could have forced parity but they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal with Kuda Kumwala wasting a good chance in the 16th minute after blazing his effort wide with only the keeper to beat before Peace Makaha was brilliantly denied by Ariel Sibanda.

The balance of play remained fairly poised until nine minutes from time when Nyoni doubled the lead as he headed home Highlanders’ second from a corner kick.

It was Nyoni’s fifth goal of the season and third goal in successive Premiership matches after recently scoring against Black Rhinos, Chicken Inn and Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Desperate to get back in the game Dynamos pilled more players forward but a quick counter-attacking move by Highlanders saw Nyoni beat his marker before setting up substitute Newman Sianchali who made no mistake to make it three for the host in the injury time.

The comfortable victory meant Highlanders completed a double over Dynamos, who were missing the guidance of their coach Lloyd Mutasa.

Mutasa, who is the national team assistant coach to Sunday Chidzambwa is in Brazzaville, Congo with the Warriors.

Congo … … … … … … … … .(0) 1

Zimbabwe … … … … … … .(1) 1

KHAMA BILLIAT scored his third goal, in 41 minutes, for the Warriors but his superb strike was not enough to give his team victory as hosts Congo fought back strongly in the second half to force a draw in this 2019 AFCON qualifier in steamy testing conditions at the Stade Alphonse Massamba-Debat in Brazzaville yesterday.

The 28-year-old Kaizer Chiefs forward, who took a huge gamble to play in this match after a week in which he battled a hamstring strain that even threatened to elbow him out of the contest, thrust the Warriors into the lead in the first half after hammering his shot into the roof of the net from close range.

But Thievy Bifouma, the new golden boy of football for the hosts, who was born in Paris and even featured for the French national youth teams before choosing to play for his fatherland at senior international level, equalised for his team five minutes after the interval.

The result, coupled with Liberia – who crashed to a 0-3 defeat at the hands of the Warriors in their first qualifier in Harare in June last year – finding a way to hold the Democratic Republic of Congo in Monrovia, meant that the Warriors remained top of the group with four points from two matches.

The DRC also have four points from two games but trail the Warriors because of an inferior goal difference while Congo-Brazzaville and Liberia have a point from the same number of matches

The highly-rated DRC, who started off their campaign with a 3-1 win over their Congolese neighbours in Kinshasa in June last year, were starring defeat in Monrovia yesterday when William Jebor put the hosts into the lead in the 62nd minute.

But substitute Meshack Elia scored with seven minutes remaining in regulation time to force a draw.

The Warriors, whose camp was ravaged by injuries sustained by some key players in defence, midfield and attack, have largely struggled on the road but they took the game to their lethargic hosts in the first half to silence a partisan crowd.

They kept their shape intact, on an artificial surface, and the pace of their attack kept worrying the hosts who found themselves gradually being pegged back as the match progressed.

And, in the 22nd minute, the Warriors struck to take the lead.

Fine work down the right channel, in which the visitors pushed the ball through some tight avenues, opened the hosts and left them duly exposed when the ball was finally threaded into the path of Knowledge Musona who was hanging on the shoulders of the defence.

The skipper took a touch as he bought a bit of time for his teammates to attack the goal, his drawback across the face of goal was exquisite, splitting the Congolese rearguard and desperately crying out for a touch.

It came from Billiat, whose connection with his right foot lifted the ball into the roof of the nets, in a fitting provision of the end product to a fine move by the visitors.

It was more than the Warriors deserved, at that stage of the contest in which they kept asking questions with the pace of their attack giving the hosts, who appeared ordinary and overawed, struggled to impose themselves.

This was Billiat’s third goal in his last 41 minutes in the colours of his country, after scoring twice in extra-time, in helping script that remarkable success story over Zambia in the COSAFA Cup final in Polokwane.

For a player who spent the whole week battling with the demons of doubt if he could make it in this game, because of a hamstring strain, his goal was worth its weight in gold and justified all the sacrifice made, personal and professional, to ensure he featured in this game.

It should have been two for the visitors as Musona ran to a ball switched to the left and some step-overs left his marker in wonderland as the Zimbabwe skipper drifted, not for the first time, towards the edge of the box. His pass found Danny Phiri, running to provide the reinforcement to the attack, and the midfielder’s shot was struck with venom but lacked the precision needed, always rising, always missing, as it flew over the bar.

Maybe, with the benefit of hindsight, Deco could have laid the ball into the path of Khama, who was unmarked at the edge of the box, and whose confidence had been boosted by the goal he had scored moments earlier.

However, the chance that Musona soon got should have been buried, without a doubt, by a player of his pedigree and that could have been game, set and match.

Another quick Zimbabwean break freed Evans Rusike down the right channel as the Congolese off-side trap was breached, the SuperSport United forward charged into the open spaces and spotted his skipper coming in from the blind side.

His pass was perfect and Musona, all alone inside the box, could even have afforded the luxury of a touch and then placement of his shot but, for a player usually the epitome of coolness in such occasions, his adrenalin let him down as he went for a first time effort.

The shot was hard but straight at the ‘keeper and the rebound came quickly at him he could only poke it out of play with his left foot.

That should have been a second goal for the Warriors, without a doubt, and that they failed to get it, gave the hosts hope that they could strike back, which they did shortly after the break, in a half in which they were the better side.

Musona, though, had another chance to win it for the Warriors but his firm shot was expertly dealt with by the ‘keeper in the dying stages of the match.

Hba League Back Next Week

Harare Basketball Association teams have intensified preparations ahead of the 2018-19 season which gets underway next weekend.

The HBA had been scheduled to start this weekend but an urgent meeting by the league’s executive resolved to postpone the season by a week in order to provide enough time for both the clubs and stakeholders to putin place everything necessary.

The HBA held an urgent meeting on Saturday at the City Sports Centre and a number of resolutions were made.

HBA president Sunny Mbofana confirmed the development in a statement yesterday.

“This is a bid to give ample time to both the clubs and the executive to put everything in place.

“Club subscription fees of $300 on the 12-team Men’s A League, 16 Women’s League and a sliding scale and lesser fee for the 16 Promotional and Developmental or Non-Promotional League.

“The lesser fee on developmental league is a way to incentivise and encourage more teams and clubs to come on board while registration fees for each player is $2.

“Sports and Recreation Commission membership registration fees is $4, which includes every participant – that is both players and officials paid through the mother board Basketball Union of Zimbabwe – and BUZ’s handling fee is $1 per member.

“A budget of $15 600 was passed with recommendations that the association concentrate more on the leagues with minimal budgets covering accommodation, affiliation and meals put in place for Interprovincials and Youths Games.”

Mbofana added that they were blessed to sign a contract with Genius Sports, fronted by Allen Mavunga (Head of Partnerships in Africa for Genius Sports Group).

“Genius Sports is a global leader in sports data technology, distribution and commercialisation services and it provides innovative and data-driven solutions to sport, media and regulated betting markets.

“The organiaation will assist HBA leagues to start using FIBA LiveStats and FIBA Organiser for it to capture the statistics of the games being played and also have their clubs and players registered online and bring worldwide recognition to the federation,” he said.

HBA have appointed Chipo Mashingaidze as head of the HBA Marketing Commission in which she becomes a member of the HBA executive.

Warriors face defining DRC double

THE Warriors face the biggest test of their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier when they clash with Demoratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in back to back matches that will be played early next month.

BY KEVIN MAPASURE

Zimbabwe picked up a precious point when they played out a draw against Congo Brazaville on Sunday evening while DRC needed a late equaliser to rescue a point against Liberia.

The results left log leaders Zimbabwe and DRC, who both have four points, still carrying an advantage over the other two teams even though the Group is still open.

Having sat at the top of the log from the first round of matches, the biggest test comes when the Warriors travel to Kinshasa for the first match that will be played on October 10 before they host DRC on October 13 in Harare.

Zimbabwe will be looking to avoid defeat away from home and try to clinch all three points when they play at home.

Coach Sunday Chidzambga said before the Congo match that a point away from home is a good result.

Captain Knowledge Musona said he was disappointed that they did not get maximum points, but said a point away from home was still a good result.
“It’s a little disappointing that we drew, but a point is not bad playing away from home. We all know that we can do better. Well done guys I’m really proud of you,” he said in a tweet after the match.

Zimbabwe and DRC last played each other in 2000 and 2001 where each won their home game in Afcon qualifiers.

Chidzambga will be hoping that by the time they play DRC a number of injured players would have recovered.

The Warriors missed strikers Nyasha Mushekwi, Tino Kadewere and Ovidy Karuru while midfielder Marvelous Nakamba and defender Costa Nhamoinesu who are both based in Europe also failed to make it due to injuries.

On the other hand the coach had also called in the pair of Tendayi Darikwa and Adam Chicksen but the two failed to secure Zimbabwean passports on time.

They also had a half-fit Khama Billiat, who went on to score the important goal that clinched the single point.

Billiat had been struggling with a hamstring injury.

Despite all these problems, Zimbabwe still managed a draw in a match they probably should have won.

Importantly, everything is still in their own hands and they know that if they can collect four points against DRC, they will be closer to qualifying for the finals that will be hosted by Cameroon.

Kirsty to dive into problem sports

NEW Sports minister Kirsty Coventry has promised to bring sanity and discipline into the country’s problematic sporting associations.

BY HENRY MHARA

Coventry, the country’s most decorated sportsperson was last week appointed at the helm of the ministry, and was part of the Cabinet members sworn-in by President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House yesterday.

Her appointment has been well received across the political divide as well as the sporting community.

However, she will be the first to admit that she’s really got her work cut out for her.

Sport, just like any other sectors in the country, is in the critical care unit, with disciplines such as football, cricket and rugby, in a complete mess. Her task is to bring sanity to those, as well as help grow some of the minority sports.

Speaking to journalists soon after taking oath of office, the global swimming sensation admitted that there are “hot spots” in the sector that need her immediate attention.

The chairperson of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, a body that represents all Olympic athletes worldwide, Coventry said she would soon put up an A Team to deal with issues at hand.

“I want to do research, do background search into specific hot topics if we can call them that. I want a better understanding of a few of the problems that we are having, and once I have discussed with my team the best way forward in how to handle some of those, I would let you (media) know,” Coventry said.

“Cricket is one of them and we will be looking at it seriously and once we have done that, then we will figure out how best to manage it. We have to create an environment in which our athletes can thrive and that would be one of my main goals.”

She added, “We are assembling a great team here. I have a great team already within the International Olympic Committee. I have dedicated staff to the athletes’ commission and to myself in Lausanne, so now it’s about setting up the same sort of team and environment.

“That’s what athletes do really well as they put together their entourage together and they lean on them and they can focus and get a lot more achievements. It’s not for one person, it’s going to take a team to really make sure that in these next five years we make a proper difference and not just that, but to create a good foundation for years and years to come so it can’t be done by just one person. It requires a big team effort.
The 34-year-old is the first sport professional to be appointed a Sports minister in the country’s history.

She was richly rewarded by the previous government for her sporting excellence, with former President Robert Mugabe awarding her $100 000 in cash for her 2008 Olympics performance where she won gold and three silver medals, but she ranks the latest honour as the best.

“I’m extremely honoured to be included in the Cabinet and in the ministry. It’s a huge honour, it really is. It’s another way in which I can work for my country, help uplift our country and hopefully bring many more athletes with me. It’s very exciting especially for women, it’s one of the biggest honours that I feel personally given by the President.

“Recognising a female athlete and being allowed to step into this role is very exciting, it’s these types of things that will encourage female athletes’ participation. It would encourage family members to support their daughters, their wives, and siblings to continue following their dreams in sport. To have our leadership believe that as well is a powerful statement, and it has given me a lot of confidence knowing that I can do this job.”

DRC back-to-back ties crucial for Warriors

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE’S upcoming back-to-back assignment against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers next month is likely to define their campaign.

The Warriors, who drew 1-1 with Congo-Brazzaville on Sunday, returned home yesterday high in confidence, with coach Sunday Chidzambwa and his troops declaring they have fixed their attention firmly on the impending blockbuster.

Most of the South Africa-based players immediately connected to their bases, while skipper Knowledge Musona flew straight to Belgium.

“Right now I don’t want to talk about being at the top or who is at the bottom.

“We just have to take each game as it comes. All we want to fight for is to go and play in the finals in Cameroon.

“I think we have to fight hard and try to get a good result, especially in the away game (against DRC),” said Chidzambwa.

Zimbabwe gave a decent account in Congo, especially in the first half, when they took the lead courtesy of midfielder Khama Billiat.

“We could have wrapped up the game with the chances that we got, but that’s how football goes. I am not really disappointed, but to tell the truth I think we should have come back home with three points. We have to work on all the areas of our game – defence, midfield and attack,” said Chidzambwa.

Warriors’ midfielder Billiat yesterday urged his teammates not to sit on their laurels.

“We just have to be mentally and physically strong and make sure we come here with one purpose to help one another to qualify again.

“We know how it is to qualify and the feeling never fades away. It’s still in our hearts, it still feels like it happened yesterday.

“So we want to make it again.

“But God always has better plans. There are ways that we want things to be done, but God always prepares something better.

“So we just have to look forward and soldier on, take each game as it comes and make sure we collect as much points as we can,” said Billiat.

The Kaizer Chiefs forward said he was happy with the Warriors’ play although he felt they needed to be more lethal in their finishing.

“You can only get worried when you don’t create chances.

“But if you create chances and you miss you should be happy, at least, because when you go back to training you know you have to work on finishing.

“It’s unlike having no chances created at all. I always say that I am one player who doesn’t chicken out whenever it gets tough.

“I want challenges. I want to go back to the same position again and see if I can repeat the same mistake.

“That’s how we grow as footballers. As a player, you need to challenge yourself continuously, otherwise there is no room for mediocrity.

“I don’t think it’s the kind of result that we wanted, but a point away is something that we can take.

“We are happy we played better and we created more chances. I think we are moving in the right direction.

“Against DRC, it’s a tough game. We just need everyone to be fit, raise their hands to represent their country and we need to score goals obviously for us to win the game.

“We are looking forward to it. We are going back to our clubs and make sure we are in the right shape for the upcoming AFCON qualifier.”

FORMER Warriors gaffer Norman Mapeza wants to tighten his grasp on the Castle Lager Premiership League race when they face Black Rhinos this afternoon. The coach is seeking his second title on the bounce.

“After the break, all the clubs have been working so hard to rectify the problems they have been facing in previous matches and it’s the same with Black Rhinos,’’ said Mapeza.

“We just have to play to the best of our capabilities and make sure we come back with a positive result.

“Each and every game differs, every coach will tell you that if there is an opportunity to hit 10 goals, go for that.

“For us, at this stage of this season, the most important thing is to get three points.’’

Meanwhile, cross-town rivals Shabanie Mine face Yadah at Maglas, hoping to save their Premiership status.

Coach Alexio Sigion said his team was in a desperate position.

“We are in a very desperate position because of the challenges we have been facing of late,’’ he said.

“I do not want to dwell much on our problems, but what I can say is that we need to be at our very best and hope other results go our way.

“Yadah is a very good team and it will not be an easy game for us,” said Sigion.

Another battle for survival is on at Ascot, when Shurugwi-based side Nichrut host fellow strugglers Bulawayo City in a relegation dogfight.

“Our objective is to survive relegation this year and we are fighting for that.

“In the second half of the season, we have been playing good football, but we have succumbed to some unfortunate losses, like our game against CAPS United.

“We need to start winning against Bulawayo Chiefs for us to have a chance of surviving, even if we win, we will remain in the relegation zone, but we just need to start collecting maximum points,” said Nichrut coach John Nyikadzino.

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
JUST two days after his election as Premier Soccer League chairman, Farai Jere rolled out the red carpet for ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa at the top-flight league’s offices last night, where the two parties agreed to bury the hatchet and work together for the good of the game.

The CAPS United boss campaigned on the promise of ending the feud between ZIFA and the PSL, which has transformed the domestic game into a toxic sport, saying a lot of time was being spent on the boardroom wrangles instead of developing the game.

And, after winning the right to be the substantive PSL chairman for the next four years, Jere delivered on his promise when he invited Chiyangwa to visit the top-flight league’s offices in Harare for the first time since he became ZIFA boss in a symbolic show of solidarity.

Chiyangwa was accompanied by his deputy Omega Sibanda, while Jere was in the company of the PSL chief executive Kenny Ndebele at the meeting which dragged on for more than two hours last night, with both parties emerging from it shaking hands.

“We had to move fast because the sponsors are tired of these boardroom wars and the negativity that they generate in the newspapers and other media platforms and they want to see us delivering on our promise to make a difference,’’ Jere said.

“During my campaign, I made it clear to the clubs that this war, or whatever we call it, with ZIFA was not necessary and it was dragging us backwards at a time when we have bigger challenges to deal with which need our undivided attention.

“I said that it will be a thing of the past and there must be mutual respect from ZIFA that we are an entity that have to run their affairs the way we believe will provide a dividend to our membership without being bullied and also, crucially, while also recognising them as the mother body in the game in this country.

“That is why I invited the ZIFA president and his deputy to come to our offices so that we could share some notes and try and reach out to each other, see exactly where we were having issues and try and find solutions to those challenges.

“I am glad that the meeting went very well and there was a lot of respect from either side, and we both shared the vision that football should be the ultimate winner and the game needed us to be leading it to a better future rather than flexing our boardroom muscles while pulling it backwards.

“The ZIFA president and his deputy were frank on a number of issues and that was refreshing and it also quelled this myth that they are on a campaign to try and take over the PSL because they made it very clear to us that they have too much on their books to even worry about trying to run our league.’’

Jere said they also discussed the proposal that next year’s domestic league championship should start from August and end in May 2020 because the season was changing in the CAF calendar and they had to adapt to those changes.

“The proposal for our season calendar to be changed, starting from next year, was also discussed and ZIFA told us that they were okay with it because everywhere across the continent, including the CAF competitions, things were changing to adopt the season used in Europe,’’ said Jere.

“There was a buy-in from the ZIFA leaders and that’s a plus, but of course, it’s still early stages yet and a lot of other parties have to be brought into the discussion so that we are seen to be doing things according to consensus and not dictating matters.

“The issue of infrastructure was also discussed in detail and, at this stage, it’s too early to talk about it, but what I can only say is that there will be some big changes to the game and we will let our work do most of the talking.’’

Chiyangwa said he was happy that they have held a clear-the-air indaba in which they showed each other a lot of respect and where the focus was on the development of the game and not petty boardroom wars.

“One thing I can tell you is that I told Kenny Ndebele that he is a very influential man in our football and he should be seen to be playing that influential role, and not withdrawing himself into the shadows because he is the man who is administering our main league,’’ said Chiyangwa.

“The meeting helped me to make it very clear to Kenny that all those who have been saying that I want to get him out of football, those who specialise in spreading false rumours and feast on such negative stories are dreaming.

“He shouldn’t lose sleep over that, but he should instead be empowered to ensure that he administers our main league in a way that makes all of us proud because the winners of the PSL become the face of our football too when they play in the CAF Champions League and when they succeed, it gives our game a good profile.

“I am encouraged by the new thrust in terms of developing football which I can see from this PSL leadership, and I believe that they will be some major changes to our game as we go forward because we can empower the PSL, we have the connections all over the world and we should be seen to be helping them.

“We have no interest whatsoever in running their league. We have the Warriors, we have the Mighty Warriors, we have the Young Warriors and we have the whole football in this country to regulate, we don’t have time to take over the PSL.

“What we should be doing, and what we will be doing now going forward will be to ensure that some of the leaders of the PSL also get posts on influential committees at CAF or, better still, even at FIFA because that is the best way we can develop their capacities and also empower them.’’
