PSL – Dynamos Edge Zpc Kariba 1-0 – Mutasa’s Charges 13th in the League

Dynamos celebrated their coach Lloyd Mutasa’s birthday with a 1-0 victory over ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager Premiership tie at Rufaro on Sunday.

Mutasa turned 51 on Thursday and, with team manager Richard Chihoro turning 62 Sunday, Dynamos fittingly responded with a win that had become stubbornly elusive.

The Glamour Boys had gone for four games without registering a win in the second half of the campaign.

Skipper Ocean Mushure, marking his return to the team after a long lay-off, was the architect of the goal, striking a brilliant free kick on 53 minutes, that was met by Emmanuel Mandiranga who flicked the ball it into the nets.

Midfielders Denver Mukamba and Brett Amidu also made the starting line up on their return, but it was Mukamba who impressed with his silky skills and trade mark passing range.

Amidu was largely anonymous and was guilty of missing a glorious opportunity from five yards out on 59 minutes, sending his effort over the bar in a one on one with goalkeeper Takabva Mawaya.

On any other day, he could have scored that one with his eyes closed.

Gift Saunyama also came close three minutes later from a set piece by Mushure.

The visitors however, threatened with some dangerous raids. David Temwanjira terrorised the Dynamos defence with his pace and aggression.

He thought he had the ball in the back of the nets on 18 minutes but Dynamos goalkeeper Simbarashe Chinani reacted quickly to clear the ball out of the line.

Mukamba could have added his name on the score board on 27 minutes, unleashing a stunning free kick near the edge of the area that troubled Mawaya.

Three minutes later Tawanda Nyamandwe broke free but Chinani reacted quickly to thwart his effort.

On 38 minutes, Munyaradzi Kunyarimwe watched in disappointment his brilliant free kick being tipped over by Chinani.

Dynamos coach Lloyd Mutasa was delighted to secure maximum points. “It’s our first win in four starts in the second half and am happy,” he said.

“It’s a morale booster for the team going forward. It was my birth day last week and today, its team manager Richard Chihoro’s birth day. I couldn’t ask for more from the guys.”

ZPC Kariba counterpart Godfrey Tamirepi said his team lost concentration.

“We were in control in the first 25 minutes and created chances. But I thought were too slow in our movement and in the second half we lost concentration.

“We were under pressure to win this but at the end the best team won. We have been good travellers but today we were just unfortunate, and we have to move on.”

Why Schools Require Pupils to Play Sports During Examinations

$

SOME pupils, and even parents, come out with the line that they are very sorry, but their child cannot take part in a school sports fixture or even practice because they have to study for their exams. Apart from the fact that it is extremely unlikely that the child would spend all the time they should have been at sport studying (they would “waste” the vast majority of that time sleeping in late, communicating on social networks, playing computer games, watching television programmes, talking with friends), it has to be argued that it is imperative that they do in fact continue with their sport.

Parents know all too well that ATS (Association of Trust Schools) schools are committed to the holistic education of their child and that sport is integral to their education, teaching vital lessons that cannot be learnt in the classroom. Sport is not an extra-curricular activity, where the word “extra” suggests that it is voluntary (a way of keeping the child amused, active or busy, if the parent or child feels like it), but a co-curricular activity – it has a key part to play in the whole curriculum being presented by the school. That does not change when exams come along! In fact, it is even more important that they continue with the sport and cultural activities when examinations come along for a number of reasons.

Secondly sport keeps our children focused on their studies. People cannot sit in front of books for long, long periods so a break is vital – the right sort of break. Sitting in front of a television or computer screen is not a break and will turn the brain off rather than stimulate it.

Thirdly, sport provides a necessary break to be refreshed. It changes their interest for a while in a positive manner. It can clear the mind so that when they come back it is fresh and stimulating.

Fourthly, sport teaches our children about determination, perseverance, commitment and patience, among other values and qualities, all of which are equally vital for examinations–in fact, they are even more important when it comes to examinations. A focused, determined pupil will do well.

Consequently, there is absolutely no need for any pupil to complain of being asked to do sport when examinations approach, not least as they know well ahead of time what is required. If they study throughout the year, with some revision done during holidays, they will not need to come up with stories that they suddenly need to revise; if they work through the year, continuing with sport and culture activities, they will be absolutely fine when it comes to examinations.

There is no denying that continuing to play sport requires an element of sacrifice, but that is, after all, what examinations are about — it is only a matter of what is to be sacrificed. It should not be sport that is sacrificed, but rather the other forms of relaxation — television, computer games or social media. For a short period, it is better to sacrifice some social interaction for healthy activity in order for the best results to be gained.

It is perfectly possible, reasonable and appropriate to continue with all those things that we believe make up education even when examinations come along. Sport does not suddenly lose its value, significance or importance just because examinations come along. Our children can do their studies as well as their sport, easily, fruitfully and successfully. Doing so is their greatest examination.

Warriors’ double blow

WARRIORS star Marvellous Nakamba and Ovidy Karuru have been ruled out of Zimbabwe’s trip to Congo Brazzaville for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier early next month due to injuries while the trio of British born Zimbabweans Tendayi Darikwa, Adam Chicksen and Kelly Lunga are a major doubt for the match.

BY HENRY MHARA

Belgium-based Nakamba reportedly aggravated the injury he sustained in May this year after returning to training with champions Club Brugge a fortnight ago.

The midfielder sustained a knee injury at the end of the season in May, which saw him sitting out his club’s last league match and missing the Cosafa Cup tournament for Zimbabwe in June.

Warriors manager Wellington Mupandare yesterday told NewsDaySport that he had been told by Club Brugge’s medical staff that Nakamba is down again, and is expected to be out for at least five weeks.

“Nakamba had returned to training and they had hoped that he could be back into the team for their match last weekend. Unfortunately, I have been told that he got injured again, and would be out for four to five weeks so he is definitely out of the match against Congo Brazzaville,” Mupandare said.

“I spoke to the team’s doctors on the phone and they have promised to send me the medical report. We would see if it’s necessary to invite the player here so that we can do our own assessment but as it stands, he is out.”

The Warriors travel to Congo Brazzaville on September 9 for the Afcon qualifiers, looking to consolidate their position at the top of Group G where they currently sit after beating Liberia 3-0 in their opening qualifier.

The group also consists of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who are second on the standings by a goal difference after their 3-1 win over Congo in the opening fixtures of the campaign.

Two teams from the group qualify for the finals to be hosted by Cameroon next year.

Nakamba’s absence is a major blow to the Warriors who would also be without Karuru who is yet to fully recover from an ankle injury he sustained at the Cosafa Cup tournament in South Africa.

The midfielder was on the receiving end of a nasty tackle in the Warriors’ quarter-final clash against Namibia, which forced him out of the team’s semi-final and final matches in which Zimbabwe went on to win.

Mupandare said Karuru, who was the captain for the Warriors at the tournament, had started training with his South African premier league club Amazulu, but thinks the Afcon match could come a bit too early for him.

“He has started training, but has a limp. I have spoken to him as well as his club, but I don’t think he will be available. We will keep checking up on him though,” Mupandare said.

The Warriors manager also gave an update on British-born Zimbabweans Darikwa, Chicksen and Lunga, who were all named in the provisional squad for the match against Congo.

Mupandare said there has been very little progress made to make sure that the trio acquire Zimbabwean passports to enable them to feature for the Warriors.

“So far there is no joy. We wrote to the Sports and Recreation Commission so that they can facilitate the process with the Registrar-General’s Office, but every time I go there (Registrar’s Office) to check, they don’t seem to know what is happening. Their chances of getting the papers are very slim. We have made contingency plans just in case they don’t make it.”

The quintet are part of the 28-member provisional squad that was announced by coach Sunday Chidzambwa last week, and their absence could be a major blow to the Warriors’ hopes of making a quick return to the continental jamboree, having participated in the last edition.

Chidzambwa was also forced not to include one of the team’s stars Tino Kadewere who recently moved to France, due to an injury.

But with the likes of skipper Knowledge Musona, Khama Billiat, Costa Nhamoinesu and the returning Nyasha Mushekwi available, the squad still looks formidable and capable of getting a result in the Republic of Congo.

Warriors provisional squad

PDV upbeat over Sables future

ZIMBABWE rugby team coach Peter de Villiers believes the tough times endured this year have laid the foundation for future success after the Sables voided relegation from the top tier of African rugby with a convincing 38-18 victory over Uganda at the Kyadondo Rugby Club here in Kampala on Saturday.

BY DANIEL NHAKANISO IN KAMPALA, UGANDA

The Sables managed just a single win and a draw out of five Tests in De Villiers’ first season as head coach, ultimately missing out on a place to next year’s Rugby World Cup after finishing fifth in the six-nation Gold Cup, which doubled as the qualification tournament to the global showpiece.

The former Springboks coach, who resolutely kept faith in a core group of young players, is positive about the outlook of Zimbabwe’s future and believes his charges can mount a strong challenge for a place at the 2023 World Cup if given the necessary support.

“We are at this stage in a great place to be and these youngsters can only grow and I think Zim rugby can have years of rejoicing. We didn’t make it for the World Cup, but we’re going to work hard now to bring back the trust of the people for 2023,” he said.

“I’ll sit down with the bosses and see what is in their minds. We need to get most of these guys to sign up with us so that we can give them a good offseason and preseason programme. They are our assets and if you look after them properly, definitely we will be proud of these guys,” he said.

While everything finally came together in a clinical performance against Uganda the Sables had in their first four matches produced good play in passages, but critical lapses had proven damaging and prevented them from producing complete performances.

In fact, De Villiers’ men could have been firmly in contention of either the automatic ticket to the World Cup or the place in the repechage playoffs eventually claimed by Namibia and Kenya respectively if they had fully utilised their opportunities against Morocco, Kenya and Tunisia.

“That is why professional rugby is so important, the more you play, the more you understand these things. As I said two weeks ago, scoreboard pressure was always against us and then the individuals were trying to go and fix it on their own and today when we actually controlled the scoreboard you could see they were actually calm under the circumstances and got the ball in the right areas.

“Today it was a good team performance where the forwards set the platform for us and when the spaces were there the hard running backs took it and made good choices. Well done to the team” he said.

Sables captain Denford Mutamangira also echoed his coach’s sentiments and called on the local rugby governing body, Zimbabwe Rugby Union and their sponsors such as Zerttew Resources, Titan Law, Portnex International and Canterbury and others to continue supporting the team.

“It’s a very young team with an average age of around 24 or 25 years and my call to the union and the corporate world is for them to keep on supporting the team. It will be a process and results don’t just come overnight. Imagine where we could be in the next two years, I believe this will be the team to beat. I hope our sponsors keep up supporting this team and looking after the current players that we have and develop them into better players, they can only get better,” he said.

Mutamangira also expressed his delight after his charges finally managed to repay the faith shown in them by their coach.

“We just needed this as a team, like what I’ve always been saying this team has got a lot of potential and we owed it to our coach. He’s been with us right from the beginning and throughout all the criticism, he said I’m not going to change my team. He said I believe in you guys, you’re the best and I’ve picked the right guys for Sables and today we’ve just shown it and I’m really proud of the boys and we can only grow from here,” he said.

Bosso laying foundations

HIGHLANDERS assistant coach Mandla Moyo has reiterated that the club is currently laying the foundation to mount a serious title challenge in the next two years.

BY TERRY MADYAUTA

While they are looking to pick up as many points as possible in what is left of the season, Bosso believe the championship may not be within their reach this term as their priority is to build a team that can win it after two years.

After 22 rounds of matches the Bulawayo giants are fifth on the log table with 36 points, 16 points behind log leaders FC Platinum and Moyo is satisfied with the progress of their rebuilding process.

Boasting of a sterling home record, Bosso have lost three times this season and the former Bulawayo City mentor is dreaming of brighter days at Highlanders.

“We want to take each game as it comes and we want to collect as many points as possible,” he said.

“The objective of the club is clear, we are building a team that can compete and win championships in the next two or three seasons or so. We are preparing, so this year is just about preparing and so far so good, we are all happy with the progress and the determination which the boys have been showing each and every game since the beginning of the season.”

On Thursday they take an inform Chicken Inn at Baborfields Stadium in a potential thriller for the bragging rights of the City of Kings.

“Our next game is going to be very crucial, and I hope the boys will come to the party and get a set of maximum points. Perhaps the long lay-off had an impact on our performance against Nichrut but I hope that will not be the case when we play against Chicken Inn,” said Moyo.

Bosso have been impressive since the arrival of Madinda Ndlovu who bestowed his faith in building his squad around youngsters, which saw him offloading the likes of Simon Munawa, Eric Mudzingwa and Tendai Ndlovu.

Manyuchi defeat draws fire

CHARLES Manyuchi’s fighting style has again come under scrutiny after the boxing star lost to Magomed Kurbanov in an International Boxing Federation super welterweight non-title fight at the DIVS Arena, in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Sunday.

BY HENRY MHARA

The former World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight champion lost by a unanimous decision against the undefeated local, who improved his record to 15 wins out of 15.

While Manyuchi faced a formidable opponent in his bid to return to the limelight after a facial defeat to Uzbekistan’s Qudratillo Abduqaxorov to relinquish the WBC title in Singapore last year, some critics believe that the Zimbabwean could have fared better had he not repeated his old mistakes.

Manyuchi was heavily criticised for his casual approach against Abduqaxorov when he tried some “drunken master” tricks, but was caught with a sharp jab for a TKO defeat in the first round of the title fight.

Former Commonwealth flyweight boxing champion Alfonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika then ripped into the boxer’s trainer Mike Zulu for the manner in which the boxer had approached, and tactics used in the fight.

That criticism has resurfaced again after the latest defeat — that further pushes the star away from the limelight — with former boxer and UK-based trainer Fellow Nousenga calling on Manyuchi to immediately change his management team.

He questioned Manyuchi’s showboating as well as keeping his guard down throughout the rounds.

“Charles Manyuchi is a very good boxer, we can’t take anything away from him, but I don’t think he is getting proper training. From this fight, you could see that he hasn’t changed from the old Manyuchi. He was repeating the same mistakes he made from last year when he was knocked out. As a coach myself, you are supposed to tell your boxer what to do. You will be calling all the shots,” Nousenga opined.

Manyuchi is managed by Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions of Zambia and is coached by renowned trainer Zulu.

“I don’t see this current trainer being able to change Charles’ style of fighting. He keeps his guard down most of the time, and if you look at the fight, there were moments he would let his opponent easy access to the face. He would let the opponent punch him and that way he was losing points. And they forget that they were fighting against a person at home, who would easily get a home decision if the fight goes down to points. And the most disappointing thing is that the boxer whom he faced was not even that good. So when something like this continues to happen in your camp, the best thing is to look for another trainer, and see if the fortunes can change for the better. It’s something that happens all over the world. Even Manny Pacquiao changed his trainer at some point in his career.

He added, “Manyuchi should also do his sparring with real welterweight champions, because to be honest the fight was boring. That is not the standard that we expect from our champion because like I said, the opponent was not that good.”

Promoter Craig Rousseau of No Pain No Gain was equally unimpressed.

“Sorry Chris (Malunga), but honestly I’m not impressed. He is still doing his funny, unnecessary showboating,” said Rousseau, who manages current Commonwealth female lightweight and African Boxing Union Female Super Featherweight champion Anisha Basheel.

Chris Malunga is Manyuchi’s manager.

FC Platinum to sign Chafa

DEFENDING Champions FC Platinum have set sights on acquiring the services of midfielder Devon Chafa (pictured) as part of their Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions league reinforcements.

BY TERRY MADYAUTA

The 27-year-old ex-Dynamos and Caps United utility player left Zambian side Buildcon early this month.

Chafa, together with compatriots Nqobizitha Masuku and Partson Jaure, left the Ndola-based side less than a year into their contracts on mutual agreement having failed to excel at the ambitious outfit.

Chafa, a player of vast experience, could come handy to Norman Mapeza who for the second time in a year is set to lead FC Platinum in the Caf Champions League that is slated for December.

FC Platinum and Harare City were handpicked by the Premier Soccer League to represent Zimbabwe in the Caf Champions League and the Confederations Cup respectively though the latter turned down the offer.

FC Platinum Media liaison officer Chido Chizondo said they are considering signing Chafa as a Caf Champions League reinforcement.

“We could consider signing him with a view of the Caf Champions League and at the recommendation of the technical team and engagement will also be subject to medicals and registration. He will be coming through either on Wednesday or Thursday for the negotiations,” she said.

The Zvishavane side were not so active during the mid-season transfer window, having only acquired former Ajax Cape Town forward Thomas Chideu, while releasing Nigel Papias, Hilary Bakacheza and Brett Amidu to Shabanie, Triangle and Dynamos respectively.

The platinum miners will be looking forward to re-write history at the continental stage after a forgettable campaign early this which saw them bowing out of the prestigious tournament in the preliminary round at the hands of Desportivo de Agosto of Angola.

City target Platinum points

HARARE City coach Mark Harrison has predicted a tough duel, as they host log leaders, FC Platinum, in a Castle Lager Premiership tie at Rufaro Stadium tomorrow.

BY TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA

The Sunshine City Boys on Sunday suffered a dispiriting 1-0 defeat to Bulawayo Chiefs in their bid for a strong finish to the campaign.

Harare City had drawn their previous four matches before embarking on the trip to Bulawayo where they returned with tails behind their legs.

While acknowledging it would be a tough contest, Sunshine City Boys coach Harrison is looking forward to the match with optimism as he looks to recover from the weekend defeat.

“Obviously, this is going to be a tough match. We are meeting the champions and current log leaders. We are hamstrung, but we are going into the match with a positive mind, a positive attitude. We have to push for three points. We have to try and get maximum points,” Harrison said.

Harare City will be missing some of their key players among them goalkeeper Ryan Harrison who is sick, Raymond Uchena and Hastings Chapusha who are suffering from groin and knee injuries, respectively.

The Harare side, however, faces a team that is high on confidence after FC Platinum emerged huge beneficiaries of a stumble by Ngezi Platinum, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Chicken Inn at the weekend.

The Zvishavane-based side took advantage when they overcame Chapungu 2- 0 to open a four point lead at the top.

The victory took the Platinum miners’ points tally to 52 from 22 matches while closest challengers Ngezi Platinum fell four points off the pace after the draw against the Gamecocks.

With the championship race shaping up to be a contestation between the two platinum miners, FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza will be looking to collect maximum points against Harare City as they hope to pull away from their nearest rivals.

However, the Wednesday fixtures appear to be kind to Ngezi Platinum. The Mhondoro-based side have what looks like a relative easy assignment than the log leaders as they host a limping Shabanie Mine.

The Zvishavane-based side are currently at the foot of the table with a paltry 15 points, having lost four of their last five matches including the weekend defeat to lowly Mutare City.

Ngezi will be banking on their home record where they have lost only to the log leaders thus far. After the draw against Chicken Inn, Ndiraya will be praying fervently that they post a win against Shabanie and FC Platinum stumble against Harare City.

Harare giants Dynamos will be looking to build on their weekend victory over ZPC Kariba when they host Yadah FC.

The Glamour Boys, who had gone for four matches without a win since the start of the second half of the campaign, finally secured maximum points in a laboured 1-0 victory over ZPC Kariba at Rufaro on Sunday.

They now have 25 points and are in 13th position.

Lloyd Mutasa will be banking again on the returning trio of skipper Ocean Mushure and midfielders Denver Mukamba and Brett Amidu whose display breathed some life into the team bidding for a strong finish to the campaign.

Fixtures:

Tomorrow; Harare City v FC Platinum (Rufaro), Bulawayo Chiefs v Mutare City (Luveve), Chapungu v Black Rhinos (Ascot), Yadah v Dynamos (NSS), ZPC Kariba v Nichrut (Nyamhunga), Ngezi Platinum v Shabanie Mine (Baobab), Bulawayo City v Herentals (B/F),

Thursday; Caps United v Triangle (NSS), Highlanders v Chicken Inn (BF)

We are letting Ariel down: Nyoni

HIGHLANDERS’ skipper Gabriel Nyoni has said the team is letting goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda down by failing to complement his brilliance in goals with end product upfront.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

While Sibanda has been doing well between the sticks, Bosso have struggled for goals upfront.

In their last match, Sibanda saved a Themba Ndlovu spot-kick for Highlanders to settle for a goalless draw against Nichrut.

The veteran shot-stopper saved Highlanders from the blushes of another defeat in their previous Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie from marauding Triangle at Gibbo Stadium last month when he saved another penalty in a game that the Bulawayo giants eventually won 1-0, courtesy of a Newman Sianchali goal last month.

Nyoni wants to see his team improving their conversion rate.

“We are not scoring as a team; from defenders, midfielders, wingers and strikers. He (Sibanda) has been saving us from point-blank saves to penalties but we are not scoring to complement his brilliant work. For how long will he continue to save us? We need to look at ourselves and start scoring as a team,” Nyoni said.

This followed an earlier post on Twitter after the Saturday game in which Nyoni said as a team, they were letting Sibanda down.

“We are letting you down big man. Thank you for the penalty saves. Two games, two penalty saves and 11 clean sheets,” Nyoni said.

In May, at Barbourfields Stadium, Sibanda also saved Highlanders from a Caps United onslaught by making spectacular saves which saw Highlanders get away with a point, in a match that the Green Machine dominated and ended in a goalless draw.

Highlanders have another tough assignment on Thursday when they host in-form Chicken Inn at Barbourfields Stadium.

The two sides drew 2-2 in a four-goal thriller at the same venue in April.

Ndiraya sweats over suspensions

NGEZI Platinum coach Tonderai Ndiraya was not amused at seeing his striker Clive Augusto shown the red card for the second time this season, raising concern that his team could suffer due to suspensions in the title run in.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

Augusto was given his marching orders in the 66th minute for a second bookable offence in the 1-1 draw against Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium on Saturday, with FC Platinum having opened a four-point lead after beating Chapungu 2-0 at Mandava Stadium.

It was the second red card for Augusto, who was also dismissed in June at the same venue when Ngezi Platinum lost to Bulawayo Chiefs in a game that also saw midfielder Xolisani Moyo being red-carded.

“We are worried and the fact that it has happened to the same player speaks volumes about the player in question, although I thought this time it was a bit different. Last time he got a second yellow card for remonstration against the referee but today (Saturday) I thought the decision was a bit harsh, particularly the second one. But it is something which is very worrying as a coach and you really want to improve on that. These cards will affect us going forward. I am not quite happy about the way we are picking up cards and it’s something which we really have to go back, sit down with the boys and talk about,” Ndiraya said.

Augusto will miss the mid-week game against Shabanie Mine tomorrow at Baobab Stadium.

However, Ndiraya is happy with his side’s run so far having gone four matches without a defeat as Ngezi Platinum attempts to catch up with FC Platinum, while Chicken Inn also close in.

“At the moment all the 17 teams’ eyes are on FC Platinum. I am happy we are still within touching distance after this very difficult encounter. We just need to manage the remaining 12 games and see what happens. We are getting into a very difficult phase now. The next five games will not be easy for us, but we just have to manage and keep the pressure on FC Platinum. What is important is to focus on the next match and make sure we collect maximum points at home. I am happy so far. I just hope we will maintain the form and make sure that we collect as many points as possible and try to reduce the gap in the next five games,” he said.

After Shabanie, they have two away matches against Mutare City and Highlanders before heading back home to host ZPC Kariba.

ZIFA CLEAR THE AIR ON KATSANDE

$

Mukudzei Chingwere in GWERU and Grace Chingoma in HARARE
ZIFA have said they have no issues with former Warriors captain, Willard Katsande, being considered for national duty but the decision to either include, or leave him out of the side, lies sorely with coach Sunday Chidzambwa. The gritty midfielder announced his retirement from international football at the end of the 2017 AFCON finals in Gabon and has not featured for the Warriors since then.

However, Katsande told The Herald last week he would reconsider his stance and return for another dance with the Warriors should the coach believe he could add value to the battle for a place at next year’s AFCON finals.

There had been expectations that, after Marvelous Nakamba and Ovidy Karuru were ruled out of the match against Congo in Brazzaville next month, Katsande would be recalled to bring in the experience needed in the team.

Some reports had suggested that Katsande was one of the players who were banned for playing for the Warriors in the wake of the fallout that followed the boycott of a farewell dinner, organised for the team, last year.

However, some of those players who were said to have been blacklisted, including Nyasha Mushekwi, have bounced back into the team.

ZIFA said they did not interfere in decisions made by Chidzambwa who had the freedom to choose the players he believes would suit well in his team.

“Chidzambwa is free to call anyone he wants to be part of his team,” said the association’s communications manager Xolisani Gwesela.

“ZIFA takes pride in the independence of our coaches, we do not interfere in team selection, and coaches use their own discretion in selecting players.

“The duty of the association is to facilitate in bringing the players the coaches would have selected, if there are injuries to the initial squad, the coaches are free to consider anyone of their choice.’’

Chidzambwa yesterday drafted Ngezi Platinum utility player, Liberty Chakoroma, into the squad after some players were ruled out because of injury.

“We selected players with a provision to cover for injured players, the squad will actually be trimmed but, maybe, we will add one or two players to the squad,’’ the coach said.

“The issue of who will come, we will have to discuss that with other coaches, as for Katsande, I cannot say yes or no, in fact I can not comment about that.

“There is an issue where it is said he retired so I do not want to say anything about that because I do not know the circumstances surrounding his retirement.

“But, for more information, you can go and speak to the association’s spokesperson.’’
Zimbabwe will battle Congo in Brazzaville on September 9.
The Warriors have been hard hit by a number of injuries to key players.

Belgium’s Club Brugge midfielder Nakamba, who aggravated the injury he has been carrying for the past two months, has been ruled out for, at least, five weeks.

Midfielder Karuru, who has been on light training since the South African Premiership resumed, has also failed to recover to play in the AFCON game.

Ironically, the Warriors were also without talisman Khama Billiat when they started their 2019 AFCON campaign with a 3-0 win over Liberia at the National Sports Stadium in June last year.

New captain, Knowledge Musona, scored all the three goals that afternoon.
The duo of British-born players Tendayi Darikwa and Adam Chicksen, as well as Germany-based Kelly Lunga, are still doubtful as efforts by ZIFA to secure Zimbabwean passports for them have been in vain so far.

ZIFA have been running around to secure the important documents, which are needed in the competitive international matches, but the association have been saying they have been receiving little, or no support, from the Sports Commission.

Relations between ZIFA and the Sports Commission remain frosty and, unfortunately, their differences are now affecting the Warriors.

Yesterday, Warriors team manager Wellington Mpandare said, for now, they have only added Chakoroma to the initial squad of 28 players announced last week.

Mpandare believes Chakoroma can perfectly fit into the team and coach’s plans.
“Liberty is a more of a utility player. Remember at his club he plays as a centre-back and at the national team we have used him as a midfielder.

“He can play as a holding midfielder, he can also play as an attacking midfielder, so he is very useful and considering that Nakamba, who is more of a box-to-box midfielder, as well as Ovidy (Karuru), who can play the same attacking midfield role, are out, Chakoroma can fill in that role and replace those two,” said Mpandare.

He becomes the second player from Ngezi Platinum Stars to be drafted into the national team after goalkeeper Donovan Bernard was included in the original list.

Polokwane City’s George Chigova headlines the list which also has Witbank’s Edmore Sibanda and Talbert Shumba of Chapungu United.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KHAMA…but Zim football ace continues to split opinion

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
KHAMA BILLIAT turned 28 on Sunday, but the Zimbabwe international forward, widely believed to be the highest paid footballer in South Africa, continues to be a source of friction as the wounds inflicted by his decision to join Kaizer Chiefs refuse to heal.

The Amakhosi took to Twitter and Facebook to congratulate their prized possession after the Soweto giants, who are the most popular football club in South Africa, broke the bank to lure Billiat into their kraal.

The forward allowed his contract at Sundowns to come to an end.

Billiat had a successful marriage with Sundowns where he won three league titles, including one in his final campaign with them, and also helped the Pretoria side write their first African Champions League success story when they transformed themselves into kings of the continent.

He also won the Nedbank Cup, the premier knock-out football tournament in South Africa, with Sundowns while also winning the Telkom Knock-out Trophy and the CAF Super Cup during his stay with the Brazilians.

Two years ago, Billiat was also honoured as the Footballer of the Season, ABSA Premiership Players’ Player of the Season and the ABSA Premiership Midfielder of the Season at the PSL awards where he swept the honours and took home R450 000.

There were expectations that he would move to Europe, after his contract had expired at Sundowns, but Billiat chose to cross the floor and join Kaizer Chiefs who struggled badly last season, leading to unrest among their fans who were unhappy with the team’s poor campaign.

The Zimbabwean was the marquee signing that Chiefs believed would turn the Amakhosi into a competitive team once again, good enough to fight for honours, including the league championship, but after a promising opening day when they drew at champions Sundowns, it has all gone downhill for them.

This is now the worst Chiefs start to the season in the era of the South African Premiership and Billiat is yet to score a league goal in the few games he has played for them.

The Amakhosi congratulated him on his 28th birthday, using their Twitter and Facebook accounts, but the responses show the deep divisions that have been created by his decision to leave Sundowns and move to the Soweto giants.

‘’Happy Birthday Khama #BilliatsBirthday #HailTheChief #Amakhosi4Life,’’ tweeted Chiefs.

Billiat also took to Twitter to thank everyone who had wished him well on his special day.

‘’Thank you all for the birthday wishes, gifts, calls, May God be with you,’’ he said.

However, there were some mixed responses, which show the divisions which his move to the Amakhosi triggered in South African football.

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender, Thomas Sweswe, a fellow Zimbabwean who is now the secretary-general of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe, said ‘’happy belated birthday mafana,’’ while someone Boyzee Lizza said, ‘’you’re one of the best Africa has ever produced.’’

Trevor Matengu said although he was a Downs fan, he found it necessary to wish Billiat a ‘’happy belated birthday boy, I am a true Downs fan but I like you a lot. Good luck (at) your new team,’’ while Vusumuzi Oscar Zulu said, ‘’we thank the Mighty Lord for keeping you safe. Guys can you be aggressive towards goals please.

‘’We know you can do better.’’

Veli Magubane was not complimentary, though.

‘’I am also suspecting the guy is here to milk Chiefs. He is uncharacteristically wasteful,’’ he said, while Richie Mofokeng said, ‘’happy birthday Brilliant Billiat . . . just play (your) normal game, we will definitely win the MTN8 Cup to ease the pressure on the camp.

‘’The team is playing well but the pressure of winning is getting to you guys, the real Khosi nation understand that we are in a transition phase.’’

Here are some of the responses:

Sibusiso Shezi

‘’Happy birthday #Khama, you’re a great player every coach would like to have in his team, no wonder your previous mentor was so furious with you leaving the team. Even the supporters from your previous team are calling you nasty names today simply because they didn’t expect you to leave their beloved club for a club that they thought couldn’t afford to pay you a salary that’ll make you happy.

‘’We as Chiefs fans love you boy, as a result you’re being supported and loved by millions of football fans instead of thousands because Chiefs will forever dominate in terms of the supporters. Feel at home, everything will fall into place soon, nobody can take that talent away from you, they’ll just hate and that’s all.’’

Lindelani Neuvhirwa

‘’Khama R833 000pm (per month) for nothing, Billiat, milk Kaizer Chiefs until they become dry mfana wami. Make sure you don’t disappoint.’’

Luzuko Ningo Bobo

‘’Happy birthday Khama but I’m honestly starting to lose patience with you buddy. Reason is that we signed you to give us goals as you were giving Sundowns but now I see a more relaxed Khama, unlike the one that was at Downs. Pull up your socks, please.’’

Mansie Victorias

‘’Pisto (has) remarkable skills of building, perfecting and combining players, Billiat joined Sundowns from Ajax as (an average) player, after joining Sundowns he was nominated for the best African Player and also became a Player of the Season in 2016.

‘’We cannot deny the fact that Pitso played a vital role on Khama’s success, I think this was supposed to be a good season for him at Sundowns after Percy Tau’s exit, but I can honestly say that there are no prospects of success for Billiat at Chiefs.’’

Lerato Mpiti

‘’Happy Birthday Khama, we know you gonna bring it, irrespective of what others believe, it’s something within you, the best ever known.’’

Petros Yedeh

‘’Khama is (an) overrated player. Last season he scored less than 10 goals in an entire season. We should invest more into youth development to discover a new Phil Masinga, Fani Madida, Mbesuma, Ndlanya who have abilities to score in front of goal.’’

Sihle Catingan

‘’I love Khama Billiat but stop trying to play like CR7 because you cost our team against Maritzburg United.’’

Denver Battles Bad Boy Tag

Denver Mukamba says he is a victim of malicious individuals who want to see him fall, even on occasions when he is battling long and hard to become a good person and better footballer. The former Warriors skipper has been enduring a tough time, with questions over his state of mind and he was kicked out of CAPS United after going AWOL for weeks.

He is now back at Dynamos, the team which had shipped him to the Green Machine, after he fell out with coach Lloyd Mutasa because of indiscipline.

The two have since resolved their differences and Mukamba played his first match for the Glamour Boys this year at Rufaro on Sunday.

He was the team’s star player as DeMbare edged ZPC Kariba 1-0.

However, there were some social media reports that he arrived at training in a drunken stupor and created problems.

Mukamba said he didn’t understand why he was always being targeted.

“A lot has been said and written about me, of course,” he told The Herald.

“I cannot waste a lot of time trying to be defensive, but what I can promise you at the moment is that my performance will do all the talking.”

Dynamos team manager, Richard Chihoro, appealed to the team’s fans to be patient with the player while dismissing the reports circulating in social media.

“He might have done some bad things in the past, but we have to appreciate the effort he is making in trying to reform.

“He has been working hard since he rejoined the team from CAPS United mid-season. What you saw on Sunday is simply the implementation of what he has been learning during training.

“The performance he gave on Sunday cannot be given by a player who is not working hard at training.

“So far, so good, in terms of his behaviour and we are all hopeful to see more of what he did on Sunday.

“He is back and will actually improve both on and off the field as we have sat down with him and he is willing to learn.”

Chihoro said Denver was now being targeted by those he claims find joy in seeing him in trouble.

“To then hear people saying that he has been causing commotion is very unfortunate. Today (yesterday), he trained with the rest of the squad in preparation of Wednesday’s (tomorrow) fixture against Yadah,” said Chihoro.

“We have covered much ground in trying to re-align the player to lift him to the professional standards which we expect at the club.”

Dynamos coach Lloyd Mutasa says his troops need to remain focussed as they seek to rise from the bottom half of the table.

The Glamour Boys welcomed back Denver and Brett Amidu on Sunday.

“Obviously, you look at the experience they have and the shift they will bring to the team, I think it is needed in our team,” said Mutasa.

“The victory which we posted on Sunday will obviously act as a morale booster ahead of our tie against Yadah on Wednesday (tomorrow).

“You know, when you are not winning, it’s difficult to psyche the youngsters, but when they get a win, they become a bit motivated.

“But, they should keep their feet on the ground and should keep working hard. It is just unfortunate that we have dropped a lot of points in the past games.

“We were unlucky at times and we were not playing well at times. We are not impressed with the position we find ourselves in at the moment. We are a great footballing institution and for us to be where we are is just unacceptable.

DeMbare play Yadah in a tricky encounter at the National Sports Stadium tomorrow.

“Yadah might look like a small team, but their performances in their last games show that they are a team which is difficult to play against,” said Mutasa..

“They have good players, some of whom are national team material. They should be treated with respect.

“The match will obviously be tough. Yadah will be trying to recover from the defeat they suffered in their last encounter.”

Fixtures

Chiyangwa Challenges Refs

ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa has challenged local referees to exercise professionalism and to take advantage of football’s global power and appeal to grow their profiles beyond the domestic scene. Chiyangwa, in officially opening a FIFA Member Associations referees’ course at Prince Edward School yesterday, told the participants the game afforded opportunities.

The ZIFA and COSAFA president, is also the chairman of the association’s referees committee, with veteran administrator Gladmore Muzambi being his deputy.

FIFA referees’ instructors Felix Tangawarima, Mark Mzengo of Malawi, who handles the fitness aspects and Somalia’s Ali Ahmed are conducting the course which started yesterday and will end on Friday.

Chiyangwa also assured the referees of ZIFA’s and his personal support for their welfare, but warned them against corruption and match-fixing.

“Football is a gateway to a lot of things, you have seen it with many African players who have gone on to play and earn big money in Europe.

“You, too, can grow your profile and find your way into such institutions like FIFA, CAF and COSAFA. I want to say that Felix and myself are the faces of Zimbabwean football to the world, but we should empower more people to get into these different bodies.

“I am happy with the numbers, (of participants) but I would want to see the training cascade down to the lower leagues so that we can increase the production,” Chiyangwa said.

He said although Muzambi was literally in charge of the referees, he had retained an oversight role on the developments in that key sector of the game, and wanted to see more female officials being developed.

“If you do a service, you should be paid. If anyone doesn’t pay the referees, I will go after the person. You should also shun dubious money games and any corruption,” Chiyangwa said.

Tangawarima, who flew into the country on Sunday after completing another course in Botswana, told the officials that FIFA and CAF placed a lot of significance on integrity.

“I think you heard a few months ago that your referees actually exposed some of the corruption which was there and for FIFA and CAF this is a very, very important development, not only to the referees themselves, but to the country as a whole,” Tangawarima said.

Tangawarima also said the FIFA instructors had from this year, taken a different approach to the teachings they are imparting to the referees across the continent.

“The local instructors will go to the other parts of the country to do what we would have done here. The approach we are taking now is different from what we have been doing in the previous courses,” said Tangawarima.

“This time around, we are more in the field of play because we have discovered that the mistakes do not happen in class.

“In class, the students can memorise the theory and answer all the questions correctly, but that doesn’t remove the error of judgment in the field of play.”

Nyasha Mushekwi’s goals in the Chinese Super League have taken him into elite company of multi-millionaire footballers, including Brazilian ace Oscar, who last year was among the 20 highest paid footballers in the world with rich pickings of about $25 million for the year.

The Zimbabwe international has been scoring freely for his Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang and a brace on Saturday, which powered his team to a 2-1 win over Henan Jianye, took his season’s tally to nine league goals this season.

That is the same number of goals that Oscar, the former Chelsea star who is now playing for Shanghai SIPG, has also scored all season in a Golden Boot race that is being led by Chinese international Wu Nei with 18 goals.

But, what has been remarkable about Mushekwi’s goals, is that they have come only in the 11 league matches he has played for his club while the majority of the players have played about double the number of matches he has featured in.

The Zimbabwean, who took his tally to five goals in his last two matches, was initially ignored by former Dalian Yifang coach Ma Lin and spent the first two months of the season on the sidelines with the gaffer preferring other players.

However, the coach’s dismissal, and the arrival of former Real Madrid boss Bernd Shuster, opened a window for Mushekwi who has now become his team’s main supply for goals and has been destroying defences at will.

Other stars who were named in that multi-millionaire Top 20 Club were Manuel Neuer, Paul Pogba, Edisnson Cavani, Thomas Muller, Alexis Sanchez, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Andreas Iniesta, Antoine Griezmann, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos, Gerard Pique, Gareth Bale, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The Chinese Super League has been growing in leaps and bounds and with average attendance figures of 23 766 it was the fifth highest of any league in the world behind the German Bundesliga, the English Premiership, the Spanish La Liga and the Liga MX of Mexico.

A breakdown of Mushekwi’s statistics, in a game that has gone very scientific, paints a beautiful picture of how he has been impressive this season once he was given the chance to lead the attack in a team that also features Belgian World Cup star Yannick Carrasco and Argentina’s Nicolas Gaitan.

The Zimbabwean has played 941 minutes in the Chinese Super League for his nine goals in 11 matches and has a pass percentage success rate of 64.1 percent, has been winning 57 percent of his aerial duels, has been man-of-the-match four times and an average rating per game of 7.72 points.

However, he is rated as being weak, in terms of holding on to possession, and his discipline has also been questioned with four yellow cards this season.

His ratings in the games he has played have been impressive.

In his first match against Shanghai Shenhua he didn’t score, even though he played the entire match, and had a strong rating of 7.63 out of 10 while, in his season game, in the 3-0 win over Guangzhou Evergrande, he scored one goal and played the full 90 minutes for a rating of 9.2 out of 10.

He didn’t score in his third game, against Jiangsu Suning FC, which his team lost 0-1 and had a rating of 7.19 out of 10 in 90 minutes while his fourth game came against Guizhou Hengfeng, which they won 2-1, with the Zimbabwean getting a rating of 8.46 out of 10 in his 90 minutes.

He was on target in the 2-3 home defeat to Tianjin Teda, in a game he played for 90 minutes, and got a rating of 8.23 out of 10 while he played only 45 minutes in the 0-3 loss to Changchun Yatai with a rating of 6.16 out of 10.

Mushekwi was unstoppable in the 3-0 rout of Guangzhou R & F as he scored all his team’s three goals and received a perfect 10 out of 10 rating after playing for 85 minutes.

Then, on Saturday, he scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Henan Jianye in which he received a rating of 8.09 out of 10, in 90 minutes of action, in a starring role for his club.

The Zimbabwean international has been setting the bar a little higher, in elite company, in the Chinese Super League in which he has shown he belongs to the group and is certainly not excess to baggage.

The veteran forward, who has also played in South Africa and Sweden, has been recalled into the Warriors side for the 2019 AFCON qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville next month.

Coach Sunday Chidzambwa felt that Mushekwi’s strength could come handy against the tougher and stronger opponents whom the Warriors next meet.

FCP Eye Chafa for Champs League

FC PLATINUM gaffer Norman Mapeza has started assembling his team for the 2018 /2019 CAF Champions League adventure, with former Warriors midfielder, Devon Chafa expected to join the miners tomorrow on trial. The 27-year-old midfielder recently terminated his contract with Zambian club Buildcon following a frustrating stay across the Zambezi.

FC Platinum have opened a four-point advantage over closest rivals Ngezi Platinum Stars, but Mapeza feels he needs a proven holding midfielder to provide the muscle in the African Safari.

This year’s Champions League campaign is starting in December after the continental motherboard agreed to change the calendar of Champions League and Confederation Cup matches to match the European schedule.

Though Chafa has performed consistently at the top with the Warriors, as well as CAPS United and Dynamos, Mapeza still needs to check on the central midfielder before sanctioning his signing.

Club spokesperson, Chido Chizondo, confirmed the latest developments.

“We expect him to be with us this week and we will have a final position after the technical team have done the necessary assessments.

“There is also the issue of medicals, as well as clearance from his previous club, before signing him if he impresses the technical department,” said Chizondo.

Former FC Platinum son, Nqobizitha Masuku, has also left Buildcon and might be in line for a return to Mandava.

The Zvishavane miners had a poor run in this year’s CAF Champions League where they crashed out of the competition at the first hurdle and Mapeza will be hoping to quickly make up for that bad run with a descent campaign this year.

Luke “Vahombe” Masomere says only a miracle can stop Manica Diamonds from winning the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One championship race. His men powered to a 15th win of the season by defeating Masvingo Pirates at Mutare Boys High School at the weekend.

“I believe we have a comfortable lead in the league, although it’s not the moment to relax,” said Masomere.

“It’s now high time we defend and maintain our unbeaten record as a way through to the Premier Soccer League next year.

“I have been encouraging the team, especially with this big lead, to remain focused and walk over the upcoming games.

“I have been impressed with my boys, especially the team work.”

The Gem Boys powered to victory through a penalty converted by veteran midfielder Steven Sibanda in the 65th minute.

The other matches saw second-placed Tenax beating seasoned campaigners Buffaloes in a Mutare derby.

Sables Find Winning Formula

Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Aaron Jani was a relieved man after the Sables finally found a way to win with a deserved 38-18 victory over Uganda in Kampala on Saturday. The victory ensured they avoided relegation and retained their place in the Rugby Africa Gold Cup.

The Sables’ poor campaign had not only ended their hopes for a place at next year’s World Cup in Japan but had also heaped pressure on coach Peter De Villiers, the players and Jani’s leadership.

Jani, in rallying the Sables ahead of their clash against Uganda, challenged them to fight for their reputations and the reputation of the country.

The ZRU boss praised his players’ work ethic and “never say die spirit.”

“I am just relieved that we live to fight again next year,” Jani said.

A drop into the Silver Cup would have meant less international assignments for the Sables and crucially made it difficult for the senior team’s brand to attract the kind of interest and support they received from players, the corporate world and other stakeholders this year.

“We also need to, at least, come number two in the Gold Cup next year so that we can get an extra three internationals in the Hong Kong Asia tournament.

“There is an automatic invitation to the number Two team.

“Obviously, number one means more resources from World Rugby. A balance is required and we need to consult widely on the best way forward for our team,” Jani said.

Sables captain Denford Mutamangira reckoned his team had a lot of potential that deserved to be rewarded by more than just securing their place in the Gold Cup. The Sables responded like cornered animals when they overpowered Uganda in a make-or-break Test at Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala on Saturday.

Zimbabwe’s victory ensured that the Sables avoided the chop while, the team that surprisingly held them at home in their opening game of the campaign in Harare on June 16 – Morocco – were relegated.

Favourites Namibia sealed the Gold Cup for the fifth successive time title and qualified for the 2019 World Cup in Japan as the Welwitschias made it five out five wins courtesy of a 53-28 triumph over Kenya. Kenya, who finished runners-up, will have another chance to claim a spot at the World Cup when they play the repechage qualifiers in November.

“We just needed this as a team and like I always said this team has so much potential to end the campaign without a win,” said Mutamangira.

“The guys really worked hard.

“We needed it for ourselves, we needed to win for our coach, we owe him big time, he has been with us right from the beginning and he said I believe in you guys, I believe I have picked the right guys for the Sables and we have shown that. We can only grow from here.”

Mutamangira said the average age of the squad that had been assembled promised a lot for the future.

“It’s a very young team, I think average age of about 24, 25 and definitely I would encourage the union and the corporate to support the team.

“It’s a process and results don’t just come overnight like now we managed to win our last game.

“I would say keep supporting the team, develop the players and we can only get better,” Mutamangira said.

Bosso Throw in the Towel

Highlanders have thrown in the towel in this year’s championship race after letting pacesetters FC Platinum open a 16-point advantage with 13 games to go. Bosso assistant coach Mandla Mpofu, who presided over their stalemate against Nichrut over the weekend, said they were not in the race for the championship.

He said winning the title this year, in a season they want to lay out a platform for the team’s revival, was always going to be difficult.

Mpofu said the quest for the league title was never part of their agenda this season.

“We are not racing anything, we are taking each game as it comes, we want to collect as many points as possible and we cannot complain about winning a point on the road,” said Mpofu.

“The objective of the club is clear, we are building a team that can compete and win trophies and win championships in the next two years or so.

“This year has always been about preparations for the coming years, but we need to win as many games as we can and so far, we are in the right direction.”

Mpofu said the extended break affected their rhythm.

“Looking at the three-week break that we had, it could have been a factor, but it is not excuse because we were training.

“First half we did not play well, but in the second half we came back strong and we were doing very well, so it also acted as part of the preparations for our next game on Thursday,” said Mpofu.

Bosso goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda, who has transformed himself into a penalty-saving specialist, saved a penalty in that match against the miners. It’s the second straight game that Sibanda has saved a penalty.

Bosso forward, Gabriel Nyoni, said the forwards were letting down the goalkeeper.

“We are letting you down big man,” Nyoni said on Twitter.

“Thank you for the penalty saves, 2 games, 2 penalties saved, 11 clean sheets.”
