Hamilton will take some beating

LONDON. – Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel both made telling comments after finishing first and second in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Mercedes driver Hamilton, fresh from a dominant victory that was far less nervy than expected before the race, was likening the 24-point championship lead he is taking into the summer break to a “dream”.

Sitting next to him in the post-race news conference, Vettel admitted: “Obviously something did not go as we planned.”
The Ferrari driver was talking about the specific details of his race but he might just as well have been talking about the way the momentum of the championship has turned against him at a time it really ought to have moved his way.

On current performance, Vettel should to be going into the four-week gap before the Belgian Grand Prix leading the championship. That he isn’t must surely be a cause for concern at Maranello, even if the German was not admitting it after the race.

This time last year, Vettel had a 14-point lead, and still contrived to lose the championship after Ferrari’s season unravelled in the Asian races that are still to come this season.

Now, he is nearly a clear win adrift of Hamilton in their private battle to become the first driver of their generation to win a fifth world championship.

Vettel, Ferrari, Hamilton and Mercedes arrived in Hungary all thinking this was a race the Scuderia would win.
But the rain in qualifying turned events in Hamilton’s favour. He and Valtteri Bottas locked out the front row of the grid; the Ferraris, struggling with a lack of tyre temperature in the wet conditions, behind them.

Overtaking is notoriously difficult at the Hungaroring but, even so, the concern at Mercedes before the race was how to prevent Vettel from beating them even from fourth, so much faster did they believe the Ferrari was in the hot, dry conditions.

They chose to start on ultra-soft tyres to maximise the grip off the line and minimise the chances of being jumped by the Ferraris, always quick starters, on the run to the first corner. Ferrari, as they expected, went for the more durable soft tyres for Vettel and decided to run long before their first stop and attack Hamilton at the end.

For a while, it looked as if it might be going Ferrari’s way. Hamilton was setting impressive lap times at the front, pulling a 6.5-second gap to Bottas behind him in 14 laps. Then Ferrari tried to set their trap.

They pitted Vettel’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen; Mercedes felt they had to respond with Bottas, and now Vettel was second behind Hamilton.

But rather than Hamilton’s ultra-softs dropping away as might have been expected, his lap times stayed good and he was able to extend his first stint to lap 24 before stopping.

Vettel was now in the lead and the plan was to pit, rejoin still ahead of Bottas, and attack Hamilton from a deficit of about 10 seconds with about 30 laps to go. It would have been close.

From lap 29, Vettel had enough of an advantage to pit and get back out in second, but Ferrari waited. And waited.
By lap 35, he was still 25 seconds in front – five more than he needed. But then he hit traffic, and began to lose time.

By the time Vettel pitted on lap 39, partly also thanks to Bottas upping his pace significantly, the gap was down to less than 21 seconds – very marginal. So marginal that any problem in the pit stop would cost Vettel position. And sure enough, the left front would not go on smoothly, and Vettel rejoined the track as Bottas blasted past.

So from hoping to attack Hamilton, Vettel was now faced with trying to pass the Briton’s team-mate.
Had Ferrari messed up?

“It was good we were faster and could pull a gap to Valtteri,” Vettel said. “Then, it is difficult to foresee the traffic and knowing how well you go through it or not. In that case, I lost quite a lot.

“Looking back at the race, Lewis’ stint in the first part with the ultra showed the ultra was a lot stronger than on Friday and what we expected.

“So you sort of know but you don’t know because, Lewis’ information, they don’t call us and say: ‘Our tyres still look good, you can come in earlier.’ That’s not how it works.

“And the worst that can happen is you fit the tyres, you gain a position and they fall apart at the end. You don’t want to do that.

“I think what we did was OK but as it turned out with the circumstances we lost out and we came out behind. Surely it didn’t help. Without that it would have been a much more relaxed last part of the race, probably hunting down Lewis. But with the gap he had, it would have been difficult to catch and then it is a different story to overtake especially around here
“I think we could have the catching bit but not really the overtake. It doesn’t change much the final result; it was just a bit more work than coming out ahead.”

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff was not so sure. “I think he would have made it to Lewis and the outcome could have been a different one,” he said.

It was the second time in seven days that events had turned against Vettel and Ferrari, after he crashed out in the wet while leading in Germany. It was, as Vettel said, a small mistake with big consequences.

Vettel won the race before that in Silverstone after a slow start by Hamilton. And while he was on the podium in Austria, it was a race he would have won – after Mercedes’ double retirement – but for a three-place grid penalty for blocking in qualifying.

All this at a time when Ferrari have made a decisive step forward in engine performance that has got tongues wagging in the paddock and caused concern at Mercedes that they are now definitively fighting a faster car.

Vettel said he was not concerned, either by his championship position or by comparisons with last year. – BBC Sport.

A Warrior’s dream

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor
WITH just over a month before the resumption of the African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Zimbabwe’s Warriors have stepped up their quest to have more of their foreign legion — including Germany-based striker Kelvin Lunga and the British Brigade — secure passports and become eligible to represent their fatherland.

The Warriors, who lead Group G, will get back to the business of trying to secure a place at the 2019 Nations Cup with a cagey assignment against Congo in Brazzaville on the weekend of September 7-9.

Zimbabwe opened their account with a 3-0 win over Liberia via a superb hat-trick by captain Knowledge Musona at the National Sports Stadium last year.

The Warriors are also still to play against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the same group.
But coach Sunday Chidzambwa is not taking any chances in that bid to be part of the elite cast of nations that will book their tickets to Cameroon for the Nations Cup jamboree and has tasked team manager Wellington Mpandare with ensuring that they assemble the best arsenal possible.

Chidzambwa has often argued that for Zimbabwe to go beyond just qualifying for the Nations Cup, they needed to have more players playing in the bigger and more competitive European leagues.

Mpandare hinted yesterday that he was closing in on a deal to secure the much-needed documents for the Warriors’ foreign legion including the British Brigade.

The Warriors team manager was, however, not amused with the frustration that has encountered in his bid to have the players available for selection.

More than a month after he raised serious concerns with the lack of support from the Sport and Recreation Commission on their bid to secure passports for players born to Zimbabwean parents but staying abroad, Mpandare, to his eternal credit has not thrown in the towel and has been fighting to assist the players to regularise their papers.

Mpandare revealed that the Warriors were still facing challenges to secure all the players that Chidzambwa has targeted but had not given up hopes of getting the likes of Tendai Darikwa, Adam Chicksen and McCauley Bonne to play for their country.
He also spoke of the frustration that striker Lunga had allegedly recently endured at the Zimbabwean embassy in Germany in his quest to become eligible for the Warriors.

Lunga, son of former Zimbabwe and Dynamos international Max Lunga Makanza has made no secret of his intentions of playing for the Warriors and had initially been included in the COSAFA Cup squad for the tournament in Polokwane early last month.

Mpandare said Lunga had the same enthusiasm as his colleagues most of whom are in the United Kingdom with all of them expressing a wish to turn out for Zimbabwe and helping their country become a force on the continent.

The players also seem to be drawing some inspiration from Alex Mudimu’s successful debut for Zimbabwe where the CEFN Druids defender was one of the stars of the COSAFA Cup show in South Africa.

“The youngsters are very keen to play for their country and they have been trying to follow all the procedures and avenues available for them to get their passports and I must say our UK embassy has been very supportive in that regard.

“I cannot say the same for the SRC who have continued to be unhelpful and I was also very disappointed that in Kelly Lunga’s case he was frustrated at the embassy in Germany even though he has a Zimbabwean birth certificate.

“He was told by Mr Enos Mafemba (Minister Counsellor) at the embassy that Germans would not be allowed to represent Zimbabwe and I even tried to assist him from this end and pleaded with him to allow the player to complete his forms and then let the forms be forwarded to the Registrar General’s office in Harare but the man kept shifting goal posts,’’ Mpandare said.

With Chidzambwa having indicated that he would want to be afforded an opportunity to travel and assess the players he is eyeing for the Warriors game against Congo, Mpandare said it was imperative that the foreign legion have their passports sorted on time.

“The plans to travel to the players’ bases are still very much in the pipeline but we need to have the passports issues sorted as soon as possible too’’.

While the Sports Commission may have claimed that associations leave it until the last minute to seek their assistance with such issues like travel documents, it has been more than four months since the Warriors indicated to them that they were keen on securing passports for such players like Kundai Benyu, Tristan Neydam, Reis Nelson, Darikwa, Chicksen and Lunga.

Most of the players, whom coach Sunday Chidzambwa has identified ahead of the resumption of the Warriors 2019 African Cup of Nations, were born of Zimbabwean parents but outside the country and have been playing for clubs in England, Scotland and Germany.

Mpandare said the issue had been politicised and the country was now suffering because some people wanted to nurse their egos.

Former Warriors defender George Mbwando has also previously thrown his weight behind the initiative that Chidzambwa and Mpandare have taken to rope in the British Brigade and other Zimbabweans dotted around the globe.

The 42 year-old former international who played professional football for a number of German clubs which include Bonner SC, Vfb Oldenburg, Vfb Lubeck, Alemania Aachen, SSV Jahn Regensburg and FC Ingolstad, reckoned that the new players would not only add to the Warriors depth but bring different dimensions to the Warriors’ game.

Mbwando revealed that he had watched big striker Lunga, grow through the development structures of German football and maturing into “a good striker who has strong eye for goal’’.

“I think the project to bring most of the Zimbabweans who are outside the country needs to be supported and the country should also afford Mhofu a chance to visit players in Germany, England, Belgium and any other leagues so that he can also assess some of the players who could not make the squad this time around.

“Reinhard Fabisch used to do that and he visited the likes of Henry McKop and Max Lunga at their clubs and it helped him a lot and Mhofu should be given the same kind of support.

“Football now is big business everywhere, it’s also business for the national teams and for clubs and countries to succeed they have to invest. You cannot reap where you did not sow.

“I believe there are plenty Zimbabweans and we have to appreciate that those who are outside are developing faster than those at home for obvious reasons such as access to the right facilities.

“The only solution to improve our football is to bring players from different leagues, if you look at the team that was in Gabon at the Nations Cup and other previous teams the bulk of the payers were always from South Africa and not that they were not doing well but with this diversity we will be much stronger,’’ Mbwando said.

Ngezi nick Nhivi…as Caps target Chungwa

STRIKER Simba Nhivi who dumped Caps United last week, is set to complete a move to Ngezi Platinum Stars where he has already passed medical tests.

by KEVIN MAPASURE

Nhivi’s destination, after he asked to be released by the Green Machine, has been a closely guarded secret, while it was also speculated that he might join Dynamos.

DeMbare have since signed Kingston Nkatha and will also register Denver Mukamba who walked out on Caps United.

A source yesterday told NewsDaySport that Nhivi agreed to join Ngezi Platinum Stars before he was released by Caps United.

The forward was said to have had a strained relationship with Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe, but the real reason he left the club was that he got a better offer from title chasing Ngezi Platinum Stars.

“Nhivi has since agreed to join Ngezi Platinum Stars. He has since had his medical examination and everything was all clear. The team needed a striker following the departure of Terrence Dzvukamanja and Nhivi was identified as the player that can bring goals.”

Tonderai Ndiraya’s men are pushing for the title and currently sit two points behind leaders FC Platinum.

Ngezi Platinum have been the best goal scorers in the league so far with 32 goals, but the departure of Dvukamanja has left them needing another lethal finisher.

Nhivi, who joins former Bulawayo Chiefs defender Polite Moyo as a mid-season arrival, has enjoyed good form for Caps United and has been scoring the goals.

Caps United themselves have added Mitchel Katsvairo to their ranks and could be further boosted by the return of Dominic Chungwa who was off-loaded in South Africa.

Chungwa is said to have held talks with Chitembwe with the view to rejoin the Green Machine.

Caps have been struggling to score since the start of the second half of the season and failed to get a single goal in their last three matches against Harare City, Bulawayo Chiefs and FC Platinum after playing out goalless draws in all those matches.

Chitembwe’s men are pushing to have a good second half of the season but sit 14 points behind FC Platinum and 12 adrift of Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Abbas Amidu is also back in the country after a short stint in Egypt and could be another option for the Green Machine.

With clubs running around to complete their transfer business before today’s deadline, its shaping up to be a season full of excitement and competition.

At some point it looked like it will just be a two horse-race between the platinum miners but with Ngezi Platinum going on a four-match losing streak as well as FC Platinum going winless in their last three matches, opportunities seem to be opening up for the likes of Chicken Inn, Highlanders and possibly Caps United and Triangle
After so much transfer business and investment before the start of the season, Ngezi Platinum Stars are under pressure to win the league title.

DeMbare who have done some good business on the market where they also clinched the signature of Brett Amidu, will be looking for a change of fortunes as they sit just three points above the relegation zone.

They have also struggled for goals having scored just 17 goals from 20 matches.

In Nkatha they have a proven goals scorer who will add value to their team.

Kadewere dreams big

WARRIORS star Tino Kadewere believes his move to France’s Ligue 2 side Le Havre AC is a big step in his dream to play in one of the big leagues in the world football.

BY HENRY MHARA

The 22-year-old signed a four-year contract with the French division one side for a reported fee of €2,5 million.
He joined from Swedish club Djurgårdens IF, where he had spent three years with the club, scoring 13 goals in 43 appearances.

Kadewere’s move from a league team in Sweden, which is set to play in the Europa League this season, to join a side who are playing in the second division looked like a step back, but the former Harare City striker, feels he made the right decision.

For him, playing in the French’s second tier league gives him a greater opportunity to make an impression on clubs in bigger European leagues.

“A lot of scouts watch French football, so I think it was a good decision for me, also taking into consideration that I’m still young and have a long way to go,” reckons Kadewere.

“Going to France is a big step for me and I’m really hoping that if I go there and perform well, and I do my best, I can make it to the bigger clubs either in France or in other bigger leagues in Europe, so that’s my hope now. I’m really happy at the moment, I can’t even express my joy because this is what I have been dreaming for, praying for, working hard for and now it is finally here. I just want to thank God and my family for being there for me always and helping me in everything that I do.”

The French second tier league has been a breeding ground for top clubs for some years now, and recently produced such stars as Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet and the Manchester City duo of Riyad Mahrez and Benjamin Mendy are products of Le Havre AC.

Kadewere, a former Prince Edward student, moved to Sweden during the summer of 2015 after he impressed during trials with Djurgårdens IF.

He also had trials with French Ligue 2 side Sochaux during that time, but decided to join Djurgårdens IF on a loan in August 2015 for the remainder of the season, with an option for the club to sign him permanently on a four-year deal at the end of the year.

He made his Allsvenskan debut in August 2015, and later made his deal permanently for a reported sum of €150 000.
Kadewere scored his first league goal for the club in July 2016, scoring a consolation goal in the 94th minute of a 3-1 home loss to GIF Sundsvall, having come in as a 85th minute sub.

It is this season though that the lanky striker took the Swedish league by storm.

He was the league’s top goalscorer with eight goals before his season was cut short by an injury last month, and had become a cult hero for his club, where he made history by scoring four goals in a league game against IK Sirius, making him the first Djurgården player since Tommy Berggren in 1978 to net four goals in a single league game.

His status ballooned even more when he helped Zimbabwe to win the Cosafa Cup in South Africa in June, scoring a brace in the final of the competition.

“It was a tough decision to make considering the years that I have spent in Sweden. It has been amazing being here, it has been really brilliant for me, but with so many injuries it was tough adapt but I’m grateful that this year it changed a bit and I managed to adapt to the system and started playing regularly.

“Eventually I got a chance to make it to a bigger football country with a big league so it was good option for me to go to France considering that it has one of the best leagues in the world. I joined a team in Ligue 2 but they play better football and better in terms of financial benefits as compared to Sweden.

The striker is currently rehabilitating from an injury he suffered last month playing for Djurgårdens IF in a friendly match against Danish side Aarhus and is expected to return to full fitness in three months’ time.

“From now on I just need to focus on my rehab and make sure I come back stronger,” he said.

Djurgårdens IF yesterday said they made a good decision to cash in on their star man, just like they did on Nyasha Mushekwi, who had been left with just a year and half on his contract.

Prince Dube on Highlanders radar

HIGHLANDERS target Prince Dube who is currently having trials at Maritzburg United as a possible replacement for compatriot Evans Rusike who moved the opposite direction to join Supersport recently. Dube has been playing at National First Division side Black Leopards on loan from Supersport. But recently Bulawayo giants Highlanders had reportedly upped their efforts to secure the services of the Zimbabwe international.

But with the domestic mid-season transfer window set to close tonight, it appears Bosso may not be able to get their man as he is currently holding trials at Maritzburg United.

According to reports from South Africa’s Kick-off magazine, Dube has since surfaced at Maritzburg and featured in a 1-0 loss to Golden Arrows in the quarter-finals of the KZN Premier’s Cup at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday.

Team of Choice coach Fadlu Davids told reporters after the pre-season contest in KwaMashu that they are assessing the Zimbabwean in their search for a top striker to fill in the gap left by the departure of Rusike.

“They (SuperSport) sent him for the weekend for this tournament and we’ll take it from there. The striker search is ongoing and we are lucky enough we have until the end of August to be able to fill that space.

“The search is ongoing and we are looking in all areas of the world to be able to find that striker that will give us that replacement for Evans Rusike, who we haven’t replaced for the last six months,” said Davids.

Rusike traded Maritzburg for SuperSport in January, having netted 21 goals in 80 appearances for the Team of Choice over three-and-a-half years.

At the time club chairman Farook Kadodia urged Mohau Mokate and Belgian forward Andrea Fileccia to step up and fill the void left by the Zimbabwean.

While a decision has not yet been reached on Dube, his former club Highlanders were keen to have the forward back in their ranks to prop up their campaign this season under Madinda Ndlovu.

But with the transfer window closing today and SuperSport United looking to go into a deal with Maritzburg, Dube will certainly not be part of the Battle of Zimbabwe showdown against Dynamos at Barbourfields on Sunday.

The 20-year-old forward had scored six goals last year before he was snapped by SuperSport following his exploits with the national team during the COSAFA Cup.

Dube signed for four years with Supersport as a long-term prospect and still has three years remaining on his contract. And when news filtered that he had been deemed excess baggage at the Pretoria outfit, at least for now, Bosso were hoping he could be loaned back to them in time for the close of the mid-season transfer window.

Highlanders are on a rebuilding phase and have already signed former How Mine striker Tinashe Makanda from South Africa National First Division side Stellenbosch.

Makanda however, is still to make his debut because paperwork has not been finalised by last week.
But DeMbare are likely to unleash their new weapon, veteran Kingston Nkhata, who completed his move to the Harare giants at the weekend after being released by Supersport United recently.

Quiet window for Makepekepe

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
GIANTS CAPS United have stuck to their guns that they will not be bargaining for players to beef up their stocks during this mid-season window although they still have room to register four more names ahead of the transfer deadline tonight.

Makepekepe signed forward Michelle Katsvairo at the weekend and it appears the former Kaizer Chiefs and Chicken Inn man could be the only new arrival.

Veterans Method Mwanjali and Hardlife Zvirekwi were registered recently but the giants have 21 senior players in their ranks, four less than the required maximum number.

However, the Green Machine are still confident they will pull through the remainder of the season despite striking off about half a dozen players from their roster in the last few weeks.

CAPS United have de-registered players that include goalkeeper Munyaradzi Diya, Oscar Machapa, Praise Tonha, Denver Mukamba, Simba Nhivi and injured Ronald Chitiyo during the transfer window.

The club’s chief executive Cuthbert Chitima yesterday said there will not be any last minute signings for Makepekepe, unless something special comes up.

“We have signed Katsvairo, we also registered Hardy and Method during the transfer window. That is all we have done so far. I really doubt if we are going to add more players unless the coaches advise otherwise,” said Chitima. Katsvairo joined the Green Machine on a one-and-a half year contract which will expire on December 31, 2019. The Harare giants are hoping the experienced forward will bring the required weight to their strike-force in their battle for a top four finish in this year’s campaign.

There are also talks of last year’s Golden Boot winner Dominic Chungwa could be returning after failing to make an impact at Polokwane City in South Africa.

Makepekepe are currently sixth on the log standings with 32 points from 20 games. They trail log leaders FC Platinum by 14 points.

Katsvairo comes in as replacement for Nhivi, who was given clearance at the weekend after featuring for the Green Machine in the first half of the season and scoring five goals.

Nhivi was one of the several players that were signed at the beginning of the season when Makepekepe made a heavy presence on the market.

But it seemed most of the signings have not yielded results with Tonha requesting for clearance to return to his former club Triangle after failing to cement a place in the team.

Goalkeeper Diya also left for Bulawayo City in search of game time. Midfielder Mukamba was sent back to Dynamos because of his delinquent behaviour while Machapa was offloaded after a largely disappointing six months. Makepekepe have also been forced to drop Chitiyo who was injured in a car accident before he had kicked a ball in the league competition upon his return from an ill-fated stint in Tunisia.

Chitiyo however, was due to be operated upon after a well-wisher offered to assist the midfielder with the procedure. Makepekepe will finish the season with two goalkeepers Prosper Chigumba and Cris Mverechena as the club have hinted they are not likely to replace Diya.

“We are going to work with those players that we have. As a club we are not going to be very active during this window,” said Chitembwe.

Makepekepe will face Black Rhinos at the National Sports Stadium this Sunday when the Premiership programme resumes. The league was suspended at the weekend to pave the way for the national harmonised elections, which took place across the country yesterday.

Coach quits over player mutiny

WELLINGTON. – Embattled New Zealand women’s soccer coach Andreas Heraf quit yesterday, ending a rocky era which culminated in most top players refusing to play for him.

The former Austrian international’s resignation came as the New Zealand Football Association (NZF) launched an investigation into complaints about the 50-year-old who has been on “special leave” since June.

NZF president Deryck Shaw accepted Heraf’s resignation but said the inquiry would continue into issues raised in written complaints from 13 players who said they would not play for New Zealand again if he remained in charge.

“Part of the resignation is that Andreas has confirmed that he will fully participate in the review and we will look to the findings of the review to determine the outcomes around this matter,” Shaw said.

Heraf quit with immediate effect as both coach of the Football Ferns, as the women’s team is known, and as New Zealand’s technical director.

He has not commented in New Zealand but in a recent interview with Austrian newspaper Der Standard he claimed there was a “large-scale conspiracy” against him. – AFP.

Chirume on Zim nationals

Takudzwa Chitsiga Sports Reporter

ONE of the finest bodybuilding scouts, Tarirai Chirume believes he has finally in Garikayi Mujuru, found the next Chenai Mambwere ahead of the Zimbabwe National Bodybuilding Championships.

Having served the industry with distinction the veteran bodybuilder thinks he has done enough for the upcoming event scheduled for September 29 at Sharon School’s Jubilee Hall in Milton Park. Chirume is confident that Mujuru could follow the footsteps of Mambwere who won the Zimbabwe National Bodybuilding Championships title five years after dominating a Mr Novice competition.

“I will be busy with work, may you please take care of Gari. I just want you to make him feel at home, it’s his first competition. I believe he will do serious damage,” said Chirume.

Gari competed and conquered beating the likes of the to be 2016 Ironman Champion, Blessing Saunyama in the process. Chirume unleashed a future champion at the Mr Novice 2013 who went on to take part in the Nationals the same year albeit in the lightweight division and came third behind ageless Isaac Chimuchenga and Lovemore Munyamana.

Although he didn’t conquer, he left the stage with a gait of a champion.

From that day, he is yet to place outside the top three at the Nationals.

Furthermore he is yet to sit out of the Nationals since 2013.

This makes him one of the most consistent athletes alongside Munyamana, Ndumiso Dlodlo and Champion Mbewe.

In 2018 Garikayi Mujuru placed third at the Arnold Classic Africa competition making him only the second athlete to finished in the top three in a senior men bodybuilding division at an IFBB rated international.

He joins Big Paul Goredema in that elite league.

There are respected voices who believe that Gari may have what it takes to compete and conquer at the Nationals.  However, the situation is complicated by the fact that Ndumiso decided not to turn pro in the Elite division as did Nigel Maphosa.

Maphosa believes he has unfinished business while the “Big Dog’’ wants to prove that his 2017 triumph was not a fluke.  Juandre Nel is also expected to compete making this year’s festival a completely unpredictable competition.

Unconfirmed reports are also saying that Vincent Kandiyero and Isaac Chimuchenga may step on stage this year.

The usual culprit, Edward Mutero will definitely cause all sorts of problems because he is dangerous.

Tembo on verge of SuperSport job

Ex-Warriors defender gets players’ backing

Sports Reporter

FORMER Zimbabwe vice captain Kaitano Tembo continued to edge closer to securing the SuperSport United coaching job, with the club’s players yesterday becoming the latest group within the club to throw their weight behind the gaffer.

There has been growing speculation on whether Tembo will be handed the job that fell vacant after Eric Tinkler left on March 1, following a string of poor results that left the Pretoria club lurking closer to relegation last season. But with just days before the 2018-19 ABSA Premiership bursts into life, it will be Tembo who will certainly be directing operation from the dugout.

Tembo has once again been SuperSport United’s caretaker coach, a situation the former Warriors defender has often found himself in at the club whenever there has been no head coach.

SuperSport will travel to Cape Town City for their first assignment of the Premiership season which gets underway on Saturday.

The club has also been rather quiet on the transfer market during the off-season and have instead offloaded two Zimbabwean strikers — Kingston Nkatha whose contract was not renewed and Prince Dube, who could yet be released on loan or sold outright.

Nkatha has since resurfaced at Harare giants Dynamos with whom he signed an initial six-month agreement up to the end of the season and could be immediately unveiled by Lloyd Mutasa when the Glamour Boys face old rivals Highlanders in a Castle Lager Premiership Battle of Zimbabwe clash.

There had been hopes too in the Bosso camp that Dube, on a four-year contract with SuperSport could be loaned out to Highlanders and also feature in their showdown with DeMbare at Barbourfields on Sunday.

It, however, emerged that Dube will not be coming to Bulawayo as he is being assessed by Martizburg United who are looking to take him as a direct replacement for their former hitman Evans Rusike.

But as SuperSport continued with their build-up to the start of the ABSA Premiership season, it was Tembo who moved an inch closer to getting the coach’s job on a substantive basis after securing the seal of approval from the club’s players.

SuperSport United captain Dean Furman told Enca television channel that the players were firmly behind Tembo and that they regarded him as the club’s head coach.

“For us from the moment coach Kaitano came in, he has been fantastic with us. He has known us for a long time, we have known him for a long time as players we are fully behind him. We have had a very solid pre-season working under him we hope that we can continue in a way that we ended last season and under his stewardship,” said Furman.

Veteran midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane also indicated that the SuperSport dressing room had warmed up to Tembo and backed him for the top job.

“For us as a club we have a coach and according to us he is our head coach we give him the same respect as someone who has a title of head coach we don’t care about a head coach or what we have a head coach Kaitano and we are planning properly for the new season,” Letsholonyane said.

But as he has often insisted, Tembo said he was not losing focus on the fact that he has an assignment to get SuperSport ready for the championship marathon.

“For me that’s not important (the talk about a substantive appointment), what matters for me is to do my job like I’m doing now like I did last season as if it’s my last.

“I don’t want to focus on other issues that I have no control of what I can control now is the responsibility that I have been given by the club and I really appreciate it and thank them for that for showing confidence in me the board the CEO”, Tembo said.

Tembo is a club legend at SuperSport United having played and coached there for a number of years.

The 47-year-old Zimbabwean lost just one Absa Premiership match from the seven he took charge following the resignation of Tinkler, guiding Matsatsantsa to safety and — with the help of some Ajax Cape Town’s Ndoro case — eventually led them to an unlikely seventh-place finish. Tembo worked closely with Stuart Baxter before the Englishman left to take over the Bafana Bafana job and was installed the caretaker coach prior to Tinkler’s arrival.

It appears that he was able to get a bit more out of the players going into the final few games when they appeared to be on the ropes.

Meanwhile, Khama Billiat continues to receive the backing to shine at his new club Kaizer Chiefs with former Mamelodi Sundowns skipper and Amakhosi defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele believing that the Warriors forward will be a huge asset at the club.

As they reunite at Naturena together with Leonardo Castro who moved to Amakhosi last December as well as defender Letlhogonolo Mirwa, Mphahlele has welcomed the reunion but dismissed the talk that Chiefs has become an extension of the Brazilians.

Mphahlele told kickoff.com that Billiat combining with Castro would bring the needed impetus to the Glamour Boys, who have struggled in the past seasons.

“Castro came in, in January, and he’s done well, so Khama now too. Of course we need experience, but most importantly we need players with a good mentality that come to the team and want to win and help.

“Yes, three years is not nice for Chiefs, but we will keep fighting. Unfortunately, if we as players give up then who’s going to bring a trophy?

“We have to bring the trophies, and the players have to work hard to bring the trophies. No one else can do it besides us, so we can’t give up.”

“By the way, Sundowns fans think I’m the one fetching them from Chloorkop. Guys, it’s not me, it’s football. Players move when they feel like they want to move.”

Bosso to test DeMbare

Remodeled Dynamos immediately face a test of strength when they clash with rivals Highlanders at the weekend in a Premier Soccer League match following a busy period during the mid-season transfer window.

BY TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA

Dynamos coach Lloyd Mutasa

The Glamour Boys had a disappointing first half of the campaign, which has seen them uncharacteristically hover just above the drop zone and currently sit on 13th place on the log standings with 22 points, just three points above Nichrut who occupy the last relegation slot.

They believe they are a club that should be fighting for honours at the top, but at this stage they are a massive 24 points behind log leaders FC Platinum.

Dynamos have overhauled their squad during the transfer window which closed yesterday − bringing on board veteran forward Kingston Nkatha, who has been plying his trade in South Africa to add bite to their attack which has been impotent, managing only 17 goals in 20 matches.

They have also roped in Munashe Kaseke, who has been playing in the United States while Denver Mukamba, whom they had loaned to Caps United, but has returned to the club where he is expected to play a huge role.

In addition, they successfully signed Brett Amidu on a loan deal and while Dynamos signed Tanaka Chinyahara, they could not register him because of limited slots.

To accommodate the new acquisitions, Dynamos had to sacrifice Valentine Ndaba and Tanaka Uswahwengavi.

With these acquisitions, Dynamos have been emboldened and freshened up, which has given them renewed hope as they seek to finish in a strong position.

The Harare football giants’ coach Lloyd Mutasa has vowed to give it a fight in the second half of the season where they target to collect the most points.

They have drawn twice against Chicken Inn and Shabanie Mine before losing 1-0 to Ngezi Platinum in their previous matches.

Their capacity will, however, be put to test on Sunday against a Highlanders side that still has mathematical chances of winning the biggest accolade in domestic football.

The Bulawayo giants sit on fourth place with 35 points after 20 rounds of matches.

After a spate of dreadful results which saw them falling to Bulawayo Chiefs, Platinum and Black Rhinos, Bosso responded by beating Herentals and Triangle in their last two matches.

Madinda Ndlovu and his men see the match against Dynamos as another opportunity to reignite their season.

While it looks like a fight for scraps for the traditional giants, it is likely to be fought in the true spirit of a big battle, albeit in their different ambitions. DeMbare want a strong finish that can lay the platform for a good start next term, but Bosso know they can whet their fans’ appetite once again with success over Dynamos, which if other results go their way can give FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum Stars something to think about at the top.

Bosso came to Harare in the reverse fixture and emerged 1-0 victors and are aware another victory at Barbourfields will see them complete a double over their traditional rivals.

Bulawayo City pin hopes on Ndlovu

BEKITHEMBA Ndlovu has taken charge of Bulawayo City on an interim basis with his prime mandate to save the team from relegation.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

His mission kicks off with a tough assignment against log leaders FC Platinum at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday.

The local authority side has already fired two coaches − Darlington Dodo and Amini Soma-Phiri − over poor results inside 20 matches.

Ndlovu took charge of two of the games where they won against Nichrut before suffering a defeat to Chicken Inn.

Bulawayo City chairperson Jerry Sibanda yesterday confirmed Ndlovu has been tasked to make sure the team remains afloat in the top flight league.

“Beke (Ndlovu) is the acting head coach up to end of the season with a mandate to save the team from relegation and we hope that the team survives. We will try to push to survive. We have given a number of coaches a chance to prove themselves but they have failed,” Sibanda said.

Since their promotion to the Premier Soccer League in 2016, Ndlovu becomes the sixth coach to take charge of the side with Philani “Beefy” Ncube, who got the team promoted starting in the top league in 2016 assisted by Farai Mukokoro and Try Ncube.

Try was to finish the last 13 games in 2016 after City parted ways with Philani Ncube and Mujokoro following bribery allegations in Beitbridge.

Bulawayo City finished their maiden season in the league in 2016 on position eight under Try Ncube.

Last year, they roped in Mandla Mpofu as head coach and the side survived relegation on the last day ending the season on position 14 in the 18-team league.

At the beginning of this year, they appointed Dodo who only lasted eight matches with Ndlovu taking charge of the two matches against Nichrut and Chicken Inn before Soma-Phiri took over.

Soma-Phiri was fired after 10 games and Ndlovu once again takes over the hot seat for the last 14 games starting with FC Platinum on Saturday with sources saying the club leadership had also approached former head coach Philani.

In 20 games this year, Bulawayo City have only won four times, drawn three and suffered 13 defeats leaving them on position 16 with 15 points, just four ahead of bottom-placed Mutare City and tied with Shabanie Mine.

Zimbabwe host Namibia in an Africa Gold Cup match in Bulawayo this Saturday − a game De Villiers’ charges simply must win with a bonus-point if they are to keep their qualifying hopes alive.

The Zimbabweans are yet to win a game in the 2018 Africa Gold Cup, having drawn with Morocco (23-23) and lost to Kenya (45-36) and Tunisia (18-14).

They are currently fourth in the six-team event and cannot qualify directly for the World Cup, but can still enter the repechage tournament if they finish second in the standings.

For that to happen, Zimbabwe must gain bonus-point victories in their final two games − against Namibia (August 4) and Uganda in Kampala (August 18).

The nation that does eventually enter the repechage tournament will face Canada, Germany and Hong Kong to do battle for the final spot in Japan.

The Namibians, meanwhile, currently top the standings in the tournament which serves as qualification for the Rugby World Cup.

Namibia beat Uganda 55-6 in their first match in Windhoek, before annihilating Tunisia 118-0 at the same venue the following week.

They then beat Morocco 63-7 in Casablanca, and a victory over Zimbabwe this weekend will take them one step further to qualifying for the World Cup.

Namibia’s final match will be against Kenya in Windhoek on August 18, where the winner of the group is likely to be confirmed.

The Kenyans are also unbeaten, but are three points behind Namibia as they failed to pick up any bonus point victories.

Kenya’s next match is at home against Tunisia on August 11.

The winner of the Africa Gold Cup, as well as the eventual repechage winner, faces the daunting prospect of being drawn in the same pool as the defending champion All Blacks, the Springboks and Italy.

Hondo Backs Sables Changes

Harare Sports Club coach Daniel Hondo believes the changes they have infused into the Sables could bring a fresh impetus into the remainder Zimbabwe’s Rugby Africa Gold Cup campaign that has terribly gone off the rails. Hondo, a former Zimbabwe international has been roped in by Peter De Villiers as the back line coach, at least for the two remaining group games against Namibia and Uganda.

The Sables will host their bogey side Namibia at the newly renovated Hartsfield Grounds in Bulawayo on Saturday before wrapping up their failed mission for a place at the 2019 World Cup finals, with an away date against Uganda in Kampala.

A 23-23 draw against Morocco in Harare in their opening game on June 16 was then followed by back to back losses to Kenya (45-36) in Nairobi and Tunisia (18-14) in Tunis.

Those results have left Zimbabwe’s World Cup hopes in smoke with the Sables instead now battling for survival in the elite Gold Cup as they are in fourth place on the six-team log table while the Namibians with, an unbeaten run and with a comfortable lead at the top, are primed to seal Africa’s ticket to the World Cup.

Following the changes in the technical set up that saw former captain and assistant coach Brendon Dawson being demoted to the development structures, Hondo has been roped in as De Villiers’ new lieutenant and specifically working as a backline coach.

Hondo in defending the changes said the move should not be “misread as a sign of doubt on the players” that had been doing duty in the last three assignments where Zimbabwe’s defending has also largely been poor.

“We’re not doubting the players that have been playing rather, it’s an opportunity for us to see what other players have to offer for our game on Saturday. Namibia remains unchallenged in the competition and we hope we will be the team that puts pressure on them,” Hondo said.

Hondo, who also represented the country at international Sevens tournaments with the Cheetahs has already led his Sports Club outfit into qualifying for the upcoming SARU Gold Cup.

Among those called up for the showdown with Namibia are the Cheetahs trio of backliners – Shayne Makombe and Tafadzwa Chitokwindo – and flanker Connor Pritchard.

Pritchard played against Morocco and Kenya but missed the trip to Tunisia as he returned home to join the Cheetahs ahead of their dance with the Sevens World Cup in San Francisco, United States. The Sables coaches have also roped in Germany based lock Antipas Kamkwindo who will be replacing Johannes Stander, Irvin Nduwa and recalled scrumhalves Hilton Mudariki and Jeremiah Jaravaza.

Mudariki who recently moved to the United Kingdom flew into Harare yesterday ahead of Saturday’s encounter and returns after missing the trips to Tunisia and Kenya.

After breaking on Sunday to allow the squad to join fellow Zimbabweans in participating in the country’s harmonised elections yesterday, captain Denford Mutamangira and his troops were expected to regroup and shift their camp to Bulawayo last night.

Sables squad:

Denford Mutamangira, David Makanda, Farai Mudariki, Irvine Nduwa, Fortunate Chipendo, Takudzwa Mandiwanza, Connor Pritchard, Tapfuma Parirenyatwa, Ernest Mudzengerere, Lenience Tambwera, Mathew McNab, Brandon Mandivenga, Kudzai Mashawi, Takudzwa Kumadiro, Shingirai Katsvere, Mathew Mandioma, Cleopas Kundiona, Lawrence Cleminson, Antipas Kamkwindo, Brian Nyaude, Hilton Mudariki, Ziyanda Khupe, Shayne Makombe, Tafadzwa Mhende, Lucky Sithole and Tafadzwa Chitokwindo.

Pat On the Back for Referees

The ZIFA referees committee is happy with the shift their officials have put so far this year in handling Premier Soccer League matches, with the association yet to receive a single official complaint from topflight teams. Ironically, the media has been overwhelmed by post match protest especially from coaches.

The referees committee this year set up the appeals committee for assessing the performance of their officials once in two months.

This committee which reviews the performance of referees through the evaluation of reports from match commissioners is again yet to find any bad performance by their members.

The referees’ boss Gladmore Muzambi said his committee has achieved an incredible milestone in their quest to handle matches fairly and making accurate calls.

“We are very happy by the work of our officials and I am happy to announce that there has not been any bad performance from our referees this year.

“We now have the appeals committee which reviews the work of officials and the good thing is that the committee is yet to see any bad performance by referees this year.

“What makes me very happy is that we are also yet to receive any single official complaint about our referees this year, I think that is a clear sign that we are doing very well,” said Muzambi.

“Referees are aware that if they are found on the wrong side of the law by the committee they risk serious punishments.

“We told the referees about the consequences and I think that is the reason for this good performance,” he said.

“I know that there are some clubs who might feel hard done by certain calls but my advice to them is making official complaints so that we look into the issue.

“Clubs must not hesitate to appeal but they need to be factual when preparing their appeal it helps us a lot in the hearing of their case,” said Muzambi.

It is a big surprise however, that clubs who often complain about the level of officiating in this country are not making formal complains.

It remains unclear whether the decision by clubs against appealing is lack of confidence that they would get any recourse or whether it is influenced by lack of strong arguments against the match officials.

Red cards for managers

LONDON. – Soccer managers and coaches will be issued with red and yellow cards for misconduct, according to new EFL rules brought in this season. Chief executive Shaun Harvey said the new initiative, which will apply to the English Football League, the EFL Cup, trophy and FA Cup, is intended to improve touchline behaviour.

Managers will be issued a yellow card for dissent, with a second card leading to a red card. Straight reds may be awarded in the case of serious abuse towards match officials, rival coaches and players. Cards will also be issued for actions including kicking or throwing water bottles, sarcastic clapping and the waving of imaginary cards.

Bookings will accumulate and lead to staggered suspensions. Four yellow cards will result in a one-match ban, 12 will mean a three-match ban, while 16 will bring about a misconduct charge. Previously, match officials only had the power to warn officials before sending them to the stands for more serious incidents.

“This isn’t about creating drama — this is about creating clarity, so everybody inside the stadium knows what is happening,” said Harvey. “You will be seeing it in the EFL as a first and it will be an interesting experience to see how it works.”

Tambwera doubtful for Sables

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor

ZIMBABWE’S preparations for their high profile Rugby Africa Gold Cup showdown with perennial rivals Namibia has taken a knock with influential flyhalf Lenience Tambwera a huge doubt for Saturday’s test at Hartsfield.

The Sables are desperate to make the most of their remaining two matches in this year’s Gold Cup campaign which is also serving as the African Zone World Cup qualifiers.

Peter De Villiers’ men have found themselves in a tight spot after a three-match winless start left them out of competition for the sole ticket to the World Cup jamboree in Japan next year.

De Villiers has remained optimistic even in the face of the tough times his Sables have gone through in a campaign that has yielded a 23-23 draw against Morocco and two away losses to Kenya in Kampala and Tunisia.

The former Springboks coach has made some changes in a bid to bolster his faltering side including calling up German-based forward Antipas Kamwkindo, the Cheetahs wing Shayne Makombe and recalling scrumhalf Hilton Mudariki, who is now based in the United Kingdom.

But just as they looked to strengthen their team ahead of their biggest challenge in the Gold Cup, the Sables may have to make do without Tambwera who has been a key figure in this team.

The Harare Sports Club man has been contributing points either from his boot or when touching down tries including the brace he scored in the 18-14 loss to Tunisia.

Tambwera confirmed that pressing work commitments related to the just ended harmonised elections, had left his availability huge doubt.

The Sables Number 10 has not been able to train with the national team since the start of camp last week.

“At the moment it’s 50/50 if |I am done early (with work commitments), I might go and join the squad but if am not I think I will miss this one,’’ Tambwera said.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union have also been hard at work handling the first phase of the refurbishment work at Hartsfield, which had been a pathetic state and barely resembled the home of rugby that the venue has traditionally been referred to.

More work is set to be done once the sticking points that have stalled the bid by Harare law firm Titan Law to fully renovate the stadium have been resolved.

ZRU vice-president Martin Shone who led the team that ensured Hartsfield would be ready for the Namibia game said the union was working to clear the frustrations that have derailed the bid by Titan Law to step in and renovate the stadium.

“The stadium is more than ready for the big game. A Lot of work has been done to refurbished the dressing rooms, the toilets and the pitch itself has been worked on extensively.

“We are just working on clearing on the unnecessary delays especially on the part of the Matabeleland Rugby Board in getting the deal with Titan Law done,’’ Shone said.

Shone, however, said the Local Organising Committee that had been working to prepare for Saturday’s game were ready to stage a fine rugby outing for the game’s enthusiasts.

Mourinho smiles at last

MIAMI. – Jose Mourinho praised the “phenomenal” efforts of his Manchester United players on their tour of the US after an encouraging 2-1 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera gave the Red Devils a win over the European champions in their final US tour fixture at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, ahead of the upcoming 2018/2019 English Premiership season.

Mourinho who had been a downcast figure throughout the tour heaped praise on the attitude of his squad that was missing a number of key players due to the World Cup. “In relation to the match, the result doesn’t change anything,” Mourinho said.

“My professional players were amazing all pre-season because they know we play against good teams, against good opponents.” We have just a few (senior) players here, lots of kids. Our kids are really, really young because the team of the older ones, on the pitch today we had a couple of kids who were 16 years old.

“People like Herrera, Bailly, Darmian, Mata, all these guys, were phenomenal during the whole pre-season, playing almost every minute of every game.

“So the game today, if we win 2-1, we lose 2-1 or draw 2-2, it doesn’t change anything but of course I know the players and I know I can count on them.

“I know that these guys are amazing professionals and I know that they give everything for the club, for the prestige of the club. I know it would have not been nice to come here today and lose 5-1 or 6-1 against Real Madrid. They were phenomenal and Karen (Shotbolt, press officer) knows that they were also phenomenal outside of the pitch with lots of commercial commitments, lots of meets and greets, lots of work with foundations. The guys were absolutely phenomenal.”

Mourinho has cut a miserable figure during their two week trip to the United States, lashing out at a lack of transfer activity while reserving stinging criticism for a number of first team players.

But seeing his side establish a two goal lead in the first half was encouraging, as was holding Real at bay after Karim Benzema’s goal just before the interval gave the Spanish side hope of mounting a comeback.

“I didn’t learn anything (from this tour),” said Mourinho. “I know what Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez are.

“I know the kids are very young and need time to grow up, I know my players gave everything and in the last 15 mins we are dead and they bring on Toni Kroos and Asensio and Isco and I thought we wouldn’t resist but we did.

“That’s the spirit we need because our first two or three weeks in the Premier League are going to be really hard for us because we didn’t prepare for that.”

The Portuguese has been without 12 key players for most of the tour with many enjoying an extended break following the World Cup. In front of 64 141 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, United were finishing off their pre-season preparations against a Real Madrid side just starting theirs.

La Liga starts a week later than the Premier League so new Real manager Julen Lopetegui was able to name the likes of Gareth Bale to start while Germany star Toni Kroos was on the bench.

Spanish international David de Gea was making his first start since returning from the extra time given to him following the World Cup and he was almost beaten in the eighth minute – Bale starting a move which saw Benzema fire just wide from close range.

Brazilian Fred, who was signed earlier this summer for £52 million, was making his first United start and looked comfortable in his new surroundings.

And on 18 minutes, United were ahead. Herrera fed Matteo Darmian and teed up Sanchez who clinically swept the ball home. It was Manchester United’s first real opportunity – and it was taken superbly.

“Alexis Sanchez is fresh, the way the man is running, I think he is in a fantastic condition,” said Mourinho.

The second goal which arrived on 27 minutes was equally impressive.

Darmian lifted the ball to Mata and once the Spaniard had regained his composure he crossed for Sanchez who was able to divert the ball into the path of Herrera who made no mistake.

Bale curled wide soon after but just before the interval, Benzema tapped in an excellent Theo Hernandez cross to give the vast amounts of Madrid fans in Miami something to cheer. Bale, a one-time target for Mourinho, was withdrawn for the second half as Lopetegui shuffled his pack and one of the substitutes, Martin Odegaard should have levelled on 56 minutes when he blazed over the bar from eight yards.

The Norwegian saw a free-kick saved by De Gea late on but United held firm to lift Mourinho’s mood. It was their first victory in regulation play this pre-season – AC Milan were defeated on penalties in Los Angeles last week.

Motor Racing Sensation Axcil Jefferies Shines in Belgium

Zimbabwe motor racing driver Axcil Jefferies is happy with the progress he has been making after grinding an impressive fourth place finish despite experience mechanical problems during the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe, which was held at the Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium during the weekend.

The 24 year-old star, whose dream is to become the first African racing driver to make it on to the Formula 1 starting grid since 1993 is in his second season in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship in the last two seasons.

At the weekend, Jefferies yet again proved why he is widely regarded as one of the world’s most promising drivers after almost securing a podium finish despite the problems with the gearbox in his car.

“I am very happy with my performance in Spa Francorchamps Belgium,” Jefferies told NewZimbabwe.com in an exclusive interview.

“Most of our competitors are racing in different championships and have had the opportunity to race and practice at Spa giving them an edge over us. So going into the weekend we knew we had a lot of work to do to be on pace. Then unfortunately in my practice session there was a red flag so I only managed to do 2 laps!! Effectively it meant I was in the deep end in Qualifying, but I squeezed every ounce of my ability to qualify 5th out of 46 cars… so was pleased with that,” he said.

“We prayed for rain in the race as I confident I can match or beat anyone in wet conditions; and the Almighty came through for us. Two minutes before the start of the race it started raining. On lap one I quickly made up two positions then unfortunately we encountered a gear box problem that we believed had been rectified on the previous practice day. It was very tough from there having to drive stuck in fifth with only occasional gear shifts but I am proud to say I was still able to set fastest sector and lap times in the tricky wet conditions and handed the car to my team mate Gerhard Tweraser in P3.

“He drove well to the end but sadly lost a place when he had a full lap stuck in fifth gear. So to finish 4th considering the above we are happy… but we know the win was easily possible!!”

Jefferies, who boasts of a wealth of experience having competed in the Formula BMW, Formula Two Championship, Indy Lights and the GP2 Series has been enjoying a lot of success with the German team Konrad Motorsport since shifting his attention to prestigious Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship at the start of 2017.

He has so far won back to back titles in the Middle East leg of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship before finishing second in the European Championship and the World Finals where drivers from four different continents made up a grid of 67 cars.

“As you all know I have won two championships in the Middle East and finished second in European championship last year and second in the World Finals so I feel very confident in my ability. I have qualified several times on the front rows against one of the most competitive championships in the world so I am happy with my progress,” he said.

“I am really happy being Part of the Konrad Motorsport family who have been 100% supportive and worked so hard all season to five us the best. Truly grateful to our team boss Franz Konrad for believing in me and giving me the opportunity.”

Now placed fourth in the race for the 2018 European Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship will be hoping to gain further ground in the next round to be held in Nurburgring, Germany during the weekend of September 14 to 16.
