PARIS. – Teenager Mason Greenwood scored as Manchester United cruised into the Europa League football last 32 with a 3-0 win over Partizan Belgrade at Old Trafford on Thursday, while Celtic stunned Lazio with a last-gasp goal in Rome to progress.

Anthony Martial doubled the advantage after the half-hour mark with a brilliant individual goal, before Marcus Rashford lashed home the third four minutes after the interval.

“I think it was a good performance but there are things we can improve on,” Rashford told BT Sport.

“We managed to score three goals but it could have been a lot more.”

AZ Alkmaar thrashed Astana 5-0 in Kazakhstan to keep control of the race for second place in Group L behind United, eliminating their hosts and moving four points clear of Partizan.

Olivier Ntcham scored a dramatic injury-time winner to grab Celtic a 2-1 victory at Lazio.

Neil Lennon’s outfit remain top of Group E with two games remaining, seven points clear of third-placed Lazio after their second straight win over the Romans.

“It’s great to have qualified with two games to spare,” Celtic manager Lennon told uefa.com.

“It’s too early to say how far we can go in this competition but we can be a difficult opponent for anyone.”

Celtic’s Old Firm rivals Rangers gave their hopes of reaching the knock-out stage for the first time since 2011 a massive boost with a 2-0 victory over Porto at Ibrox.

Second-half goals from Alfredo Morelos and Steven Davis fired Steven Gerrard’s men second in Group G, three points ahead of Feyenoord after the Dutch side’s 1-1 draw with Young Boys.

“He has been outstanding for us all season and he has turned up again tonight and got a very important goal for us to set us on our way,” Davis said of Morelos, after the Colombian’s 11th Europa League goal this term – AFP.

THE Zimbabwe Korfball Federation will hold their annual meeting at Queen Elizabeth School this morning.
The association will meet with their stakeholders as they plan to spread their wings to all the provinces and form structures.
Tarirai Chadhebha, the association president, said they will hold the indaba to update stakeholders on the journey they have travelled so far.
“We are going to hold our first open discussion at Queen Elizabeth where we have invited several stakeholders like NAPH and NASH as we seek to spread our wings to all the provinces.
“We do not have meaningful structures in most provinces so we will meet and discuss the way forward.
‘‘The meeting will also help us come up with a strategic plan that will be effective and compliant.
“As an association, we have been having challenges and do not have full-time employees, so we need to deal with some of those issues during the discussions,” said Chidhebha. The team, which failed to send a team to the World Cup in South Africa earlier this year, do not want a repeat of that scenario in the future.
“We got an invitation for next year’s junior World Cup and we need to plan in advance.
“Our junior national team have been invited for the Word Cup which will be held in Taipei from July 11-19, 2020, and we don’t want to miss out again,” said Chidhebha.

THE ZIFA Eastern Region championship race enters a decisive phase this weekend as leaders Tenax take on third-placed FC Makaha at Chikondoma.

Second-placed Buffaloes travel to Ruwa to face unpredictable Ruwa ProGroup.

Blessing Madhombi’s Tenax have a slender one-point after moving to 59 points with three games remaining.

Their opponents, FC Makaha, are seven points adrift.

“This is an important game and we are ready although it is difficult to play FC Makaha at their Chikondoma backyard,’’ said Madhombi.

“We need to win and remain on top. The game is going to be a tough one as they (FC Makaha) still have a huge chance to remain in the race with a win.

“We respect them as they boast of an experienced coach in Paul Chimalizeni, but I told my boys to remain focused.

‘’We will not be looking at Buffaloes’ results as we need to do the job on our own.’’

Chimalizeni said they will play for their badge.

‘‘We have confident players whom you will not believe joined the Division this season,’’ said Chimalizeni.

‘‘The boys are hungry for success and we are ready for Tenax.’’

In ZIFA Central Region Division One League, Sheasham remain at the top and today travel to Mbizo to face Dendairy. Second-placed Whawha travel to Gokwe North.

The two teams are separated by four points.

Afcon qualifiers: Heart condition rules out Bonne

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
ENGLAND-based forward Macauley Bonne apparently had an appointment with a cardiologist to attend to an urgent heart condition, ruling him out of the AFCON qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia. Bonne, who got a Zimbabwean passport last Friday to enable him to feature for the Warriors for the first time, was scheduled to have a cardiac MRI conducted at the St. George’s University of London yesterday.

His management team indicated, in the communications between them and the local football authorities gleaned by The Herald, that the procedure was urgent.

“Macauley has an urgent heart scan tomorrow (yesterday). This is a major issue. I will explain shortly and send you the documentation,’’ his agent.

“Unfortunately, with Macauley’s heart complication, this will rule him out for, at least, the first qualifier. This is very much regretful, but the heart condition needs to be investigated before anything else.

“I have requested that his club send a formal email tomorrow, informing the relevant parties. He is absolutely delighted to have his passport, but this has come at an unfortunate time.’’

The 24-year old had appeared frustrated over the years by the delays in getting a Zimbabwean passport.

Bonne, who has scored five goals in eight appearances for English Championship side Charlton Athletic this season, did not rule himself out future engagements with the Warriors.

“I am both delighted and privileged to be selected to join the Zimbabwe national team and I appreciate all those involved in securing my passport,’’ Bonne said in a statement.

“I’ve been working extremely hard at club level and to receive this, is something I (dreamt) of as a boy.

“Unfortunately, and reluctantly, I am unable to travel due to unforeseen medical grounds, which is a huge frustration to me, as it will be to the people of Zimbabwe.

“The messages of support, via social media, are much appreciated and although I cannot reply to every message, I do take every one to heart.

“I’d like to wish the entire Zimbabwe team the very best of luck in the coming game(s). In the meantime, I will maintain a line of communication to Welly Mpandare and the ZIFA representatives.’’

ZIFA yesterday described the latest developments as a setback.

“We are still to get the official communication from his side. We understand the nation was expecting to finally see him in Zimbabwean colours this week,’’ said ZIFA spokesperson, Xolisani Gwesela.

“But we understand his position from the statement he made and we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him in the near future.’’

Bonne’s withdrawal leaves Warriors caretaker coach, Joey Antipas, with 22 players expected in camp ahead of the preparations which begin today.

Zimbabwe are set to play Botswana at the National Sports Stadium this Friday and then travel to Zambia for the second match in this Group H four days later.

Another Warriors striker, Tino Kadewere, has also been ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury while on duty for his French Ligue 2 side Le Havre last Friday.

“I definitely had him in my plans. So this is a big blow to the plans but life has to go on,’’ said Antipas.

“I believe we have some good players in the squad and the likes of Knox Mutizwa have been enjoying good form of late. I am sure they will be able to stand up and get the job done.’’

Antipas had requested a number of first time foreign-based players from the British Brigade but, as it stands, he is only able to have Cliff Moyo of Kidderminster Harriers.

This follows the withdrawal of Swansea teenage sensation, Tivonge Rushesha and Jonah Fabisch.

The others Douglas Nyaupembe, Martin Mapisa, Adam Chicksen and Jordan Zemura were dropped along with Admiral Muskwe of Leicester City last week with ZIFA citing financial constraints.

“I would have loved to have them and have a look at the lads but my hands are tied. This time around it was not possible.

“Hopefully, we will be able to get these players and more in the future, just to try and add quality and depth in our squad,” said Antipas.

The Warriors yesterday received the bulk of their players, mostly from South Africa.

Midfield star, Khama Billiat, led the arrivals with goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, Alec Mudimu, Marshall Munetsi and England-based Cliff Moyo also joining in.

The South Africa-based duo of Terrence Dzvukamanja and Kuda Mahachi and midfielder Thabani Kamusoko, who plies his trade in Zambia, were the early birds on Sunday.

Marvelous Nakamba, who featured for Aston Villa in the English Premiership match against Wolves on Sunday, is expected today while captain Knowledge Musona is the last player expected tomorrow.

Goalkeepers: Elvis Chipezeze, Simbarashe Chinani, Talbert Shumba

Joey Antipas takes a dig at PSL

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
WARRIORS coach Joey Antipas has criticised the failure by the Premier Soccer League to observe the FIFA international break. Antipas, who also doubles as the national team coach, is expected to go in camp today with the Warriors to prepare for the back-to-back 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia.

This has left him with added pressure as he needs to take care of his side Chicken Inn’s title charge in an away match against Mushowani Stars at Trojan tomorrow.

Chicken Inn edged to within two points of leaders CAPS United with a controversial 2-1 win over Triangle at the weekend.

There are four games remaining in the season and it is getting tense at the top.

“It’s only fair that I have to give due attention to my team because that’s my bread and butter,’’ said Antipas.

“So, I will see how I will balance the scales. But this whole thing is a mess because this is a FIFA week. Everywhere in the world there are no local games being played.

“Mind you, the national team games take priority over the domestic programme. I think we had too many stoppages during the season and now it is the clubs that are paying heavily for that.”

Ironically, Antipas’ boss at Chicken Inn, Lifa Ncube, is the Premier Soccer League vice-chairman.

The Premier League have put together a full programme for the midweek and another full menu is expected at the weekend in a bid to end the season on time.

The games are expected to finish early December with the Castle Super Cup, featuring the league winner and the Chibuku Super Cup champions, bringing the curtain down.

PSL spokesperson, Kudzai Bare, said the league games should go ahead as scheduled this week since no club has more than three players in the Warriors squad.

This is in accordance with the PSL Rules and Regulations.

There are only five local players in the Warriors squad and these are Prince Dube (Highlanders), Ian Nekati (ZPC Kariba), Partson Jaure (Manica Diamonds) and goalkeepers Simba Chinani (Dynamos) and Talbert Shumba of Chapungu.

“I understand the Warriors match against Botswana is on Friday and then they play again next week in Zambia. So, the scheduling of our games do not directly interfere with the national team matches.

“What we usually do in such circumstances when the national team is playing, if a club has three or more players in the squad, their game is postponed. But if there is no team with more than three players, the domestic games will continue as scheduled.’’

She said the clubs knew the rules and regulations very well.

“The clubs are aware of this because it is there in the PSL Rules and Regulations. That’s where we picked this from and since there is no club with more than three players, the games will continue as scheduled.

“I am sure we are going to finish the league programme on time. That’s why our schedule had been a bit hectic of late.

“We are doing our best to finish all the matches early December,” said Bare.

Thank you Sugar Sugar Boys

DEAR Sugar Sugar Boys,
I find it strange that although it is with a somewhat heavy heart, laden with gloom and despair, as I write this letter to all of you, there is a certain tinge of delight at how you acquitted yourselves as Zimbabwe’s ambassadors in the CAF Confederation Cup.

I also know that the whole football family, in and around the Lowveld and, in fact, the whole country, were saddened by your exit at the hands of Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibbou after you eventually lost 3-4 on aggregate.

I think that 2-0 loss in the away leg, after that disastrous three-minute blitz following a lapse in concentration by the defence, put a heavy burden on the shoulders of some of you who were not experienced enough to come out of such a scenario.

But, hey, how well you took the bull by the horns and fought bravely to post a 3-2 victory in front of your Zimbabwean fans at home last Sunday.

Sadly, it was not enough to overcome the visitors.
However, sad and frustrated some of you might still be, just remember the joy that you gave to some of us in this journey, starting with that roller-coaster ride in the preliminary round against Uganda’s Rukinzo in Bulawayo on 11 August.
And how sweet that victory was — just like the sugar cane you harvest at Triangle — when you blasted five goals past the hapless Rukinzo ‘keeper without reply.

Of course, the second leg, away, was just academic as the match ended goalless.
And then when you were drawn against Tanzanian outfit Azam in the first round, the prophets of doom had already inscribed your tomb’s epitaph.

But, again, you sent all of us wild with delight with those identical 1-0 wins in both legs, with skipper Ralph Kawondera and gangling midfielder Trevor “Yaya” Mavunga scoring the goals.

For a change, it wasn’t Dynamos, CAPS United, FC Platinum or Highlanders hoisting the country’s flag on the continental football front.

This proved, indeed, the great Pele’s immortal mantra when he said that football was, indeed, “the world’s most beautiful game”

Because when you have the same actors being cast in repeat roles, the plot does get somewhat thin and monotonous.
Although I will not pick out any outstanding characters in your “technicolour spectacle” I think head coach Taurai “Bla Jack” Mangiro and his technical team, and your club’s effervescent president Adelaide Chikunguru, deserve special mention for the unwavering roles they displayed as they persevered for history to be made from the Lowveld.

Chikunguru led from the boardroom with gusto while Mangwiro rolled out a true gaffer’s procession from the touchline.
And, of course, I would also like to pay tribute to the thousands of fans who journeyed from the Lowveld and afar as they joined hands in a truly national cause during the campaign.

As you prepare for the remainder of your season, I just want you to know that there is no dishonour in doing what you did on the continent.

You fought a good fight, for a team making their maiden appearance at this stage of the game, and you made all of us proud.
Once again, thank you Sugar Sugar Boys for that good adventure.
Yours in Football
Charles Mabika

NAAZ retain partners

Grace Chingoma Senior Sports Reporter
THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe, who released their 2020 calendar yesterday, are happy to retain their partners who will continue to sponsor their events next season. The athletics season will begin early January with the national season-opening cross-country events.

NAAZ indicated they have retained Old Mutual, PPC Matopos, Mr Pace and JM Busha Races who, over the years, have been the main races.

Tendai Tagara, the NAAZ president, said the coming season will not be business as usual.
“We have retained our partners. We have retained JM Busha which will be bigger and better.
“For the sake of risk management, we want to advise those organising fun runs and aerobic runs outside their facilities and grounds that anything more than 5km is not a fun run and must be sanctioned by NAAZ.

“This issue was raised by the Athletes Commission and, as the mother-body, we must be seen in charge because if a person is run over during these fun runs, the association is held accountable by the Sports Commission and Government.

“They don’t look for organisers. We have very tragic experience in this regard. So, anything more than 5kms, must be registered with NAAZ.

“Athletes are complaining that they are being exploited in the name of fun runs for charity,” Tagara said.
NAAZ have pegged the sanctioning fee at $10 000.

“Sanctioning fee was US$$1 000 but we have changed this on value and reverted to local currency,” said Tagara.
To avoid athletes exploitation, NAAZ have said the organisers of such races should publish the prize money, at least, a month before the event.

“Any road race should publish prizes, latest a month before, so that athletes make an economic decision and not to ambush athletes,’’ he said.

“We are here to serve the athletes. Surely, a sponsor cannot invite athletes to a 42km race and say it’s a fun run.
“This must come to an end.”
Meanwhile, sprinter Ngoni Makusha says he is preparing for the upcoming season with the Africa senior championships and Olympic qualification as his top priority.

The sprinter, who was part of Zimbabwe world relay team at the IAAF World Relay in Japan this year, is still chasing the Tokyo 2020 qualification.

That process ends in June next year.
The other members of the team are Tatenda Tsumba, Daniel Kamungeremu and Itayi Vambe.
The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee have since partnered the relay team since the athletics is one of their priority sport code.
“The qualifying period ends in June, so I have to get as many races between now and then,’’ said Makusha.

“I will be starting my season in January or February, my first races will be in South Africa and right now I’m planning on going to the Pretoria High Performance Centre for training.
“I sent a proposal to help me with the funds and I am still waiting for the feedback.
“I have to go from this month to the end of December. It’s good to train there as there are better training facilities than here.”

CAPS legends donate kits

CAPS United legends in the United Kingdom yesterday donated football kits to several academies at Harare Sports Club.
The CAPS United Legends UK treasurer, Timothy Chirozvani, who arrived in the country on Saturday, handed over the kits worth more than £400 to more than 15 academies.

The kits featured soccer balls, cons, bibs and hurdles. The beneficiaries include the Dynamos Under-18 team, Alois Bunjira’s Albun Academy, Stanley Chirambadare’s Revival Academy, Thomas Banda’s MC 15 Academy, Jimmy Malomo’s La Sakubva in Mutare, Friendly Academy, Howard Primary School, Peter Nkomo’s Goalkeepers Academy in Bulawayo and Beitbridge’s Dulibadzimu Primary School.

Dynamos Under-18 were included by virtue of being last year’s Under-18 champions in the Harare Junior League. Chirozvani said he looks forward to seeing some talented footballers emerging from their efforts.

“I am so happy to be back home and donating these kits to academies who carry the future of our football,’’ he said.
“We are grateful, as CAPS United Legends UK, to give back to the communities.

“We have managed to identify several academies and I believe this will go a long way in identifying some stars.
“We look forward to producing more talented footballers and academies are the way to go as we have a good example of Methembe Ndlovu whose Bantu Rovers project is bearing fruits. “We hope we can have more (Marvelous) Nakambas from these projects.”

Chirozvani also saluted teams who still have vibrant junior sides.
“It is good that we still have some clubs who have junior clubs like Dynamos who have an U-18 side who were beneficiaries,’’ he said.

“There is need to give the youngsters a chance from grassroots level.”
Bunjira, the former CAPS United and Zimbabwe forward, said he was happy to receive such support.

“I am so happy to be part of the beneficiaries and this is going to go a long way in helping the youngsters I am training.
“There is need for support, from both former players and all interested in the development of football in the country.
“The kits we received will go a long way in developing the players and I am thankful to the team for the good gesture and we will put this to good work,” said Bunjira.

Chirambadare said academies could not do them on their own.
“It is difficult to part ways with money these day but the Legends felt otherwise and have donated,’’ he said.
“We are happy that they did not chose the beneficiaries in a wrong manner but they included everyone.

The initiative is the brainchild of former CAPS United skipper Joe “Kode” Mugabe who serves as the organisation’s chairperson.

Other members of the executive include Frank “Dealer” Nyamukuta, Artwell Mabhiza, Cannisius Tongesai, Tichaona Nyenda, Leonard Chirozvani, Sam Huwa and Charles Chikeya.

Denver plots DeMbare pain

BY TERRY MADYAUTA

CHAPUNGU midfield magician Denver Mukamba is plotting to put up one of his best shows when he comes against his former employers Dynamos in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Ascot Stadium tomorrow.

Mukamba comes up against the club that made him popular for the first time since his return from the wilderness, having taken a break from the game last season.

The forward wants to shine on the big occasion against the most popular team in the country.

Dynamos have been struggling for form and have drawn all of their last eight matches and Mukamba is determined to capitalise on that slump in form.

He said the match against DeMbare was very important to him as an individual as well as for Chapungu.

“It’s a very important and emotional match to me. I have to prove myself, I have to inspire in this one,” Mukamba said.

“Matches like this come with a lot of pressure, but it is my target to inspire a win in this match.

“Dynamos are a big team which I respect a lot, though in this match, we need maximum points and it will be a great honour for me to get a goal for my current club.

“We lost our last match and we want to collect maximum points in this one because dropping points means we also drop on the log.

“Our coaches have stressed on the need to collect as many points as we can until the season ends so that we may probably achieve our season’s objectives.”

Chapungu lost their last assignment 1-0 away to Yadah Stars and they will be looking to bounce back to winning ways against Dynamos.

However, Ascot has proven to be a favourable hunting ground for Dynamos, as they have collected maximum points at this venue for the last three seasons against the same opponents.

The reverse fixture between the two sides ended 1-0 in favour of the Tonderai Ndiraya-coached side and they will be looking to complete a double over Chapungu.

Bonne pulls out

BY HENRY MHARA

MACAULEY Bonne (pictured) has pulled out of Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group H qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia, raising fears that the striker might be turning his back on the Warriors as he expects to get a call-up with England in future.

Born in the United Kingdom to Zimbabwean parents, Bonne is eligible to represent either England or Zimbabwe.

There were expectations in Zimbabwe that the 24-year-old, who plays for Charlton Athletic in the English Championship, would finally begin his international career with the Warriors in the two upcoming Afcon qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia.

Bonne used his Twitter account to deliver the news that he would not make it for the two matches, saying that he had to withdraw on medical grounds.

“I am both delighted and privileged to be selected to join the Zimbabwe national team and I appreciate all those involved in securing my passport,” he wrote.

“I’ve been working extremely hard at club level and to receive this is something I dreamed of as a boy. Unfortunately and reluctantly, I am unable to travel due to unforeseen medical grounds, which is a huge frustration to me, as it will be to the people of Zimbabwe. I’d like to wish the entire Zimbabwe team the very best of luck in the coming games. In the meantime I will maintain a line of communication to Welly Mpandare and the Zifa representatives.”

He secured a Zimbabwean passport last week following several years of concerted effort from himself and members of the Warriors technical team to have him regularised to play for the team.

The Registrar-General Clemence Masango announced last Friday that Bonne’s passport, together with that of defender Adam Chicksen, who plays for Bolton Wonderers, also in the English Championship, were ready.

Jordan Zemura, of Bournemouth in the English Premiership, and Cliff Moyo, who plays in the lower leagues in that country, are expected to get their travel documents this week.

Mpandare, who has played a key role in securing passports for players born abroad, yesterday confirmed that Bonne had pulled out.

The striker was part of the 24-man squad, but has excused himself despite playing the whole match in his club’s 2-1 loss to Millwall at the weekend.

Chicksen and Zemura have been dropped.

“He has indicated that he has a heart problem and has been booked by the doctors. We hope that he will come for future national team assignments because we consider him a very important player and that is why we have made efforts to get him the passport,” Mpandare said.

Having played the whole match on Saturday, Bonne’s pull-out from the Warriors squad could be viewed as a snub to Zimbabwe, with reports emerging from England that the highly-rated striker has reportedly set his sights on a possible England call-up in the future.

According to a report by an English sports radio station, Talksport, which has extensively covered Bonne’s rise from the lower leagues, the striker could be about to pause his international career with Zimbabwe as he sets his sights on a possible England call-up in the future.

The radio station believes that Bonne’s current form can see him persuade England coach Gareth Southgate to consider him in the Three Lions’ squad.

“Charlton Athletic striker Macauley Bonne could be about to pause his international career as he sets his sights on a possible England call-up in the future,” Talksport reported.

“The Addicks ace has had an excellent spell in the side as a replacement for Lyle Taylor, scoring five goals in seven starts, and given his exceptional rise at 24 years old, there is a chance he could replicate the fortunes of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, who went from Stocksbridge Park Steels all the way to Euro 2016 with the Three Lions.”

Added Talksport: “Bonne has not turned his back on Zimbabwe, the homeland of his parents, but is considering the options he has after frustrating complications as he attempted to get a passport ahead of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament. He was ultimately unsuccessful and missed out on the opportunity to play in the competition.”

Bonne made his debut for the Zimbabwe Under-23 side in a friendly match against Morocco national team in 2014, scoring a goal.

The following year, he was called up for the 2017 Afcon qualifiers against Guinea, but pulled out of the squad due to club commitments.

He was called up again in 2016 for Zimbabwe’s Afcon 2017 qualifier against Swaziland, but was again forced to withdraw from the squad, on this occasion due to passport technicalities.

Bonne played for the Warriors in friendly matches against Namibia and Lesotho in 2017.

His unavailability could be a huge blow to Warriors coach Joey Antipas, who has also lost another striker Tino Kadewere for the two matches due to injury.

Kadewere, who is also enjoying the best form of his life in the French second division, picked an injury playing for his side Le Havre at the weekend.

The team’s other senior striker, Knowledge Musona, has struggled for game time this season, spending most of the time featuring for Anderlecht’s developmental side in Belgium.

Antipas’ only reprieve is that Knox Mutizwa has hit top form at the right moment after he scored a brace in Golden Arrows’ 3-2 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premiership.

Mutizwa and most of South Africa-based Warriors stars were expected in camp at 5pm yesterday alongside Marshall Munetsi and Alec Mudimu, who are based in France and Wales, respectively.

Star midfielder Marvellous Nakamba and Teenage Hadebe are expected in Harare tonight.

Mpandare said Bonne and Kadewere would not be replaced, leaving only 22 players set for camp for the two Afcon matches.

The match against Botswana is set for the National Sports Stadium on Friday, before the team travels to Zambia for the second group qualifying match four days later.

The group also has African champions Algeria, who Zimbabwe will face next year.

Top two teams from the group will qualify for the Afcon finals set for Cameroon in 2021.

Cephas Chimedza defends Musona’s inclusion

FORMER Zimbabwe international Cephas Chimedza says Knowledge Musona will always remain a key member of the Warriors.

He says he doesn’t understand the debate surrounding the decision to draft the Smiling Assassin for the 2019 AFCON qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia.

Musona is expected home today.

The debate about Musona’s suitability for the matches against the Zebras and Chipolopolo has spilled into Belgium with concerns about the talismanic forward’s readiness for the two matches. Although Musona has not played competitively for his club Anderlecht in the Belgian top-flight league this season, Warriors caretaker coach, Joey Antipas, drafted him into the squad for the battles against Botswana and Zambia.

Chimedza, one of the few Zimbabweans to score a goal at the AFCON finals when he found the target against Ghana’s Black Stars at the 2006 Nations Cup in Egypt, says Musona is an important member of the Warriors.

“For our national team he is important,’’ said Chimedza.

“Just like when (Thomas) Vermaelen was not playing (for) Barca but was always in the Rode Duivels (Red Devils, the Belgian national team).’’

Chimedza was responding to a report in Belgium which highlighted the debate surrounding the decision to call Musona for the two matches.

Vermaelen moved from Arsenal to Barcelona in August 2014 after the Gunners accepted a £15 million offer from the Catalan giants for the services of the defender.

He signed a five-year contract with Barca but he was plagued with injuries and was loaned to Italian side Roma.

After his return to the Catalan giants, he failed to impress and in July this year moved to Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

Chimedza believes the same treatment, which was given to Vermaelen, who continued to be called for national duty despite his struggles with his club side, should also apply to Musona.

The former CAPS United and Dynamos star was responded to media reports in Belgium. “At KV Oostende he was one of the star players but at Anderlecht he can’t even get out of the stands anymore,’’ a Belgian independent website, Voetbalkrant, argued.

“Knowledge Musona topped the charts at KV Oostende, but is not having a very good time in Anderlecht — especially under Franky Vercauteren.

“The Zimbabwean has not played a game for the Purple & White (Anderlecht) this season and is mainly filling his time with the promises.

“It’s a situation that is also closely monitored in his home country.

“In Zimbabwe there was even a debate about the footballer in the media because he was called up for the national team.’’

Yesterday, Antipas said Musona was the kind of player he couldn’t ignore.

“Knowledge is the type of player who can turn it on in an instant,’’ he said. “Guys like Knowledge, being around, he is the type of player you can’t overlook.’’

Meanwhile, Khama Billiat has explained what has led to the team’s resurgence this season and how they have managed to become the team to beat in the South African Premiership where his Kaizer Chiefs lead the race for the championship with a 10-point cushion. Chiefs have shown an incredible turnaround from last season’s disastrous campaign. Many people have been surprised by the note on which Amakhosi have started the 2019/20 season, after majority called for the sacking of coach Ernst Middendorp during the off-season.

But Billiat has outlined what has paved the way for this drastic improvement under the German tactician, which sees them topping the standings with a 10-point lead.

“I really need to give credit to our defensive line; our defensive organisation is something that we have mastered very well,” explained Billiat of his side’s impressive record of having conceded just seven goals in their opening 11 games.

“That’s why we don’t concede as much as we used to, or the easy goals that we used to, but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.

“We just started understanding each other better as players, as well as the coach’s philosophy. It took us a bit of time, but I think we’re getting into it and we really look like a team right now.

“We are a unit; we are united, and when you’re in a good space then everything just starts flowing very nicely.”

The discipline in defence is in fact not only in the back five — including the goalkeeper — but in the entire team’s efforts to track back in transition, and the Zimbabwean has admitted it’s something they didn’t quite understand the value in when Middendorp first arrived.

“I think it’s one thing we didn’t get right when the coach arrived, and we never really knew our roles or how to set up in certain moments,” he added.

“We’re starting to understand him better now, and things we thought were difficult for us have become so easy, and it’s through hard work and paying attention to details.

“So, everything seems to be working for us and we just hope that it will continue for quite a long time.” — Sports Reporter/Kick-Off.

Billiat donates to former school

Grace Chingoma Senior Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWE international Khama Billiat yesterday gave back to his former primary school, Gwinyiro, in Mufakose, when he donated a consignment worth R100 000.

The donation was made through his recently-launched Khama Billiat Foundation.

The goods contained soccer and netball kits, cones as well as sanitary pads.

The vision of the Foundation is “to contribute to society by positively impacting on the lives that matter.’’

Billiat, who flew in from Johannesburg with the members of his Foundation, first presented the goods to the school before joining the Warriors at their first session in the afternoon.

The diminutive forward started Grade 2 at Gwinyiro in 1998 having been at Marimba Primary in Grade One.

By the time he was in Grade Three, he was already playing for the school team.

In Grade 5, his brilliance caught Marc Duvillard’s attention who sent his manager from Lord Malvern to the parents with the offer to cater for Billiat’s school needs and fees.

And, by the time he was in Grade Six, Billiat was already boarding planes to feature in football tournaments with Aces Academy.

He was born at Mufakose Clinic on August 19 in 1990.

“I was giving back to the school that l went to. I brought some sanitary pads, soccer kits, netball kits,’’ said Billiat.

“It took long for me to do it, I don’t know why but I thought, maybe, I would do it with the Khama Billiat Foundation.

“It’s still new and we started it not so long ago.

“I found it proper for my team to fly this side and do it here while I am in camp. It is not about soccer only, we just want to try and help as much as we can.

“And, that includes the disadvantaged people and the disabled people.

“Everyone needs help but we should be honest with ourselves that there are some people who need help more than others.’’

Currently eight members are running the Foundation with some members based in Harare while the rest are in South Africa.

And, after making the first donation at his former primary school, the midfielder said the Foundation will venture into more projects.

“I was scared, we didn’t know what to expect since it was my first time but it all went well and we are happy,’’ said Billiat.

“It’s so good to be welcomed in such a way and now we know and we want to do as much as we can to so many lives.’’

At the moment Billiat is wholly financing the Foundation.

“We are trying by all means to get partners who can join us, we have a couple of companies and people willing to help but we thought we had to do it on our own the first time and see how it is,’’ said Billiat

“We are just honest people who want to help as much as we can and we don’t want to have people on the board who have wrong intentions and end up making all of us look bad.

“We have people who have same goals with us, that is to touch so many lives, so we will not just accept offers without a clear idea of what they want.’’

Khama Billiat Foundation spokesperson, Thabang Sibeko, said the interventions would be in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

“We recently launched the foundation this year. The whole intention was to get a structured platform to give back to the communities, both here in Zimbabwe and South Africa,’’ he said.

“And, we will still need to do more work because there is so much in terms of people needing some kind of assistance.

“We are not specifically saying we are doing football stuff, there is another important element about the donation, the sanitary pads, so we will see how much difference we can make in people’s lives.’’

Billiat’s mother, Rosa, also attended the ceremony.

Rosa, who is her son’s biggest cheerleader and a devout Christian, said she made the effort to grace the occasion and give it her blessings though she had a bereavement in the family after her sister lost a child.

Gwinyiro school pupils cheered the star during the donation.

Tasha Dube, a Grade 5 pupil who plays basketball, said she had learnt that dreams can come true.

“I was happy that he donated kits to our school. I know him from the television pictures but today I saw him.

“I was also happy that he gave our headmaster a present of a soccer jersey,” she said.

Billiat’s Grade Three teacher, Eunice Mhembere, who is still at the school, also spoke about Khama’s football prowess.

Deputy school headmaster, Anna Chingora, who was already at the school when Khama arrived, paid tribute to the soccer star.

“We feel humbled and really appreciate the warm gesture. Some students never turn their backs once they leave the learning institutions but he spared his time, and finances to come and assist the school.

“He is a good example to all the pupils, especially when you meet someone in flesh and blood, someone you always see on television, you feel the touch of gold and we are really proud of him,” she said.

Bosso’s flying Dutchman speaks on PSL

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor

HIGHLANDERS’ Flying Dutchman, Hendrik Pieter de Jongh, has questioned the professionalism of the domestic Premiership after the top-flight league came up with a full programme of fixtures during this FIFA international football week.

The Bosso coach even joked he could field himself in his team’s league match against Ngezi Platinum Stars at Barbourfields today in an apparent jab at a system that comes up with league matches during the window set aside by the world football governing body for international matches.

The match at Barbourfields is a dress rehearsal of the 2019 Chibuku Super Cup final which will see the two teams clash after they emerged triumphant in their semi-finals at the weekend.

The PSL leadership have said that their rules and regulations stipulate that matches can only be put on hold for clubs that have more than three players in the national team.

The Warriors take on Botswana in the first of their 2019 AFCON qualifiers at the National Sports Stadium on Friday evening before taking on Zambia four days later.

Virtually all the top-flight leagues around the world have put their league programmes on hold but the domestic Premiership will be in full swing. And, De Jongh, who has enjoyed a flying start as Highlanders coach, is not amused by the domestic set-up.

“FIFA calendar (says) no league in professional football leagues during qualify matches for the national team, only Zimbabwe league (does not) follow the rules,’’ De Jongh tweeted yesterday.

He had earlier tweeted a photograph of himself heading a ball with the caption, “good memories, I’m considering myself in the Wednesday line-up.’’

His decision to question the decision to have a full programme of league matches, just days before the Warriors start their AFCON qualifying campaign, attracted a number of responses on Twitter.

“I know, only Zimbabwe breaks all the records,’’ replied Emmanuel Mberi.

Another respondent, Leslie Nyoni, said it was crazy this was even being taken as normal.

“Seeing that everyone thinks this is normal, so you’re all saying our football will never grow since the little things are the major factors that lead to our bad performance in major stages in the world?’’

Another respondent, Velie J, said this was how things were done in this country.

“Relax my coach, that’s how we roll this side of the world, we don’t care about what others do or say, we do what we do.’’

The Bosso coach recently said the fierce battle for the league championship will only make the domestic Premiership a better league.

“In Zimbabwe you have about eight teams that are all favourites to win the title at the start of the season,” he told our sister newspaper, The Chronicle.

“You have Highlanders, Dynamos, CAPS United, FC Platinum, Ngezi, ZPC Kariba, Triangle, and Chicken Inn all in the running to win the title.

“The league is not easy; those teams are playing for the title every season.”

De Jongh becomes the second high-profile coach to question the decision by the PSL to have league matches this week.

On Monday, Warriors coach, Joey Antipas, criticised the arrangement and said he would have to leave the Warriors camp to be with his club Chicken Inn when they take on Mushowani Stars today.

I think we had too many stoppages during the season and now it is the clubs that are paying heavily for that.” PSL spokesperson, Kudzai Bare, said the league games should go ahead as scheduled this week since no club has more than three players in the Warriors squad.

CAPS United cry foul

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter

PREMIERSHIP log leaders CAPS United have cried foul over the decision by the PSL Disciplinary Committee to arraign the club, and four of their key players, before their tribunal today.

The timing of the move, on the eve of a crucial Castle Lager Premiership match against ZPC Kariba at Rufaro, has been described as suspicious.

The Green Machine are locked in a fierce race for the league championship with Chicken Inn and FC Platinum.

Midfielder Ronald Chitiyo, Carlos Rusere, Dominic Chungwa and John Zhuwawu are expected to withdraw from camp today to answer to charges related to the post-match disturbances which followed their league match against Chicken Inn at Barbourfields last month.

The PSL said the players, and the club, were being charged for breaching the Premier Soccer League Rules and Regulations, in particular Order 31, that deals with acts of violence.

However, Makepekepe coach, Darlington Dodo, yesterday felt the timing of the hearing disrupted their focus on the preparations of the game against ZPC Kariba tomorrow.

He says this could deny his team a level playing field in this year’s tense championship race.

Dodo believes, whatever the outcome of the hearing, his players will be left with a heavy psychological burden to deal with ahead of tomorrow’s league clash with ZPC Kariba.

“I don’t need to wish ourselves the worst, I have to be positive always and I know I don’t have to comment about the allegations and everything else,’’ he said.

“What I have to do is to prepare the team that I have at my disposal. I will leave everything to the authorities.

“But the time was wrong, I don’t think it’s proper. It’s very unfortunate to have such actions before a crucial game like the one we are playing against ZPC Kariba.

“The good thing is we have been psyching up these players in terms of their mental attitude. They are seasoned players.

“They know what they want to achieve. The time that we are in, they really know what we are pushing for.

“Hopefully, it won’t disturb us. The timing is very unfortunate, it was going to be better off if our game was brought back and then we play after the hearing rather than having the players going for a hearing and then play the next day.

“But I hope and trust they will be in good mental state.”

Makepekepe lead the race with 51 points, two ahead of FC Platinum and Chicken Inn.

Their opponents ZPC Kariba are six points off the pace but they can still fancy their chances, with four games remaining in the season.

CAPS United officials said they have been unsuccessful in their efforts to persuade the PSL to allow them to play on Wednesday and then have the hearing afterwards.

They also questioned the decision to have their team play on Thursday when most of the teams involved in the title race were playing today.

Chicken Inn travel to relegation-threatened Mushowani this afternoon while FC Platinum are away to Manica Diamonds at Vengere.

English Premiership sharpshooters in AFCON

LONDON—English Premier League football sharpshooters Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah flew to Africa this week, seeking goals as 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying kicks off.

New Arsenal captain Aubameyang has claimed eight league goals this season and Liverpool duo Mane and Salah seven and six respectively, putting the trio among the top 10 scorers.

The form of Gabonese Aubameyang, Senegalese Mane and Egyptian Salah will encourage their nations as they face two matches each between this Wednesday and next Tuesday.

Mane, who is looking good to succeed two-time winner Salah as African Footballer of the Year, will be first into action with Senegal hosting Congo Brazzaville in Thies today.

Having scored for Liverpool in a 3-1 triumph over reigning champions Manchester City Sunday and travelled to Dakar Monday, Mane will have little time to prepare for the Group I clash.

Fortunately for 2019 Cup of Nations silver medallists Senegal, whose defence is marshalled by Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, Congo have not impressed recently.

Any outcome other than a comfortable win for Senegal would be surprising as the nation currently ranked first in Africa launch another attempt to win a maiden Cup of Nations title.

Aubameyang and Salah play tomorrow with Gabon away to central African neighbours the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group D and Egypt at home to Kenya in Group G.

Salah will work with recently appointed Egypt coach Hossam el Badry for the first time, having missed a warm-up win over Botswana last month because of an injury.

El Badry succeeded Mexican Javier Aguirre, who was sacked after the Pharaohs flopped as 2019 Cup of Nations hosts, losing to South Africa at the last-16 stage.

Another English Premier League star available to the new coach is Mahmoud “Trezeguet” Hassan, who scored for Aston Villa in a weekend defeat at Wolves.

Kenya appeared at a Cup of Nations this year for the first time since 2004 and edged Tanzania between group losses to eventual champions Algeria and runners-up Senegal.

Aubameyang, the son of a former international, and Gabon have unhappy memories of recent Cup of Nations.

They could not win any of three 2017 group matches despite being hosts and made a humiliating first round exit before faring even worse in the following edition by failing to qualify.

Aubameyang struggled for form in Africa and refused to travel from Gabon to South Sudan for a 2019 qualifier because he believed the chartered aircraft was unsafe.

Only a handful of countries leave DR Congo capital Kinshasa with maximum points and a realistic target for new Gabon coach Patrick Neveu would be a draw.

Algeria star Riyad Mahrez has managed only two English Premier League goals for Manchester City this season and was an unused substitute at Liverpool.

The “Desert Foxes” hope this will not affect his performance when the trophy-holders host shock 2012 African champions Zambia, who failed to qualify for the last two Cup of Nations, in Group H.

Nigeria, third at the 2019 Cup of Nations, have called up Premier League midfielders Alex Iwobi of Everton and Wilfred Ndidi from second-place Leicester City to face Benin in Uyo.

Saudi Arabia-based captain Ahmed Musa returns for the Group L match after missing a friendly draw with Brazil in Singapore due to injury.

Although Ghana are the third most successful country in the Cup of Nations with four titles, the last came 37 years ago when Abedi “Pele” Ayew was a teenager.

Now retired after an illustrious career, he will watch England-based sons Andre and Jordan tackle unpredictable South Africa in Group C in Cape Coast. —AFP.

Pep scot free

LONDON — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will face no action from the Football Association for his actions during the defeat by Liverpool on Sunday.

Liverpool beat the Premier League champions 3-1 at Anfield to move eight points clear at the top of the table and nine clear of Guardiola’s City.

It came after City had two penalty appeals for handball turned down.

Guardiola could be seen saying “thank you so much” as he shook referee Michael Oliver’s hand after the match.

Asked about the incident, the Spaniard said: “No, it was not sarcastic. It was: ‘Thank you so much’.

“I said the same thing after the Tottenham game. ‘Thank you so much’.

“I go over to the referees and my colleagues and I say ‘good luck’ all the time.”

City were convinced they should have been awarded a penalty for a Trent Alexander-Arnold handball moments before Fabinho struck the opening goal.

Guardiola appeared visibly upset by the decision to allow the goal, suggesting any questions about it should be put to Mike Riley, general manager of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the body responsible for referees in English professional football.

The City manager offered no comment on the incident beyond saying: “Ask Mike Riley and his people please.”

Guardiola was again animated on the touchline when the ball struck Alexander-Arnold on the arm from close range late in the match.— BBC Sport.

Kundai Maguranyanga wants to shift base

Collin Matiza Sports Editor

AFTER spending almost two years on an athletics scholarship at Drake University, promising Zimbabwean sprinter Kundai Maguranyanga is now seeking greener pastures at another college in the United States.

Maguranyanga (22) wants to move from Iowa’s Drake University to Texas Christian University in Texas to re-unite with the man who discovered him when he was still a high school pupil at Pamushana High School in Masvingo — Darryl Anderson.

Maguranyanga first caught the attention of the world renowned American sprints coach Anderson when he visited Zimbabwe towards the end of August 2016 where he conducted a workshop for athletes and coaches at NUST in Bulawayo in collaboration with the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.

And, after watching Maguranyanga clocking an astonishing 5,83 seconds in a 60-metre dash, Anderson was impressed by the young Zimbabwean sprinter’s talent and said his performance makes him eligible for an athletics scholarship at any top university in the United States.

Maguranyanga won himself a four-year athletics scholarship at Drake University after he was convinced to join the Iowa-based college by fellow Zimbabwean Ngoni Makusha.

Makusha, a bronze medallist for Zimbabwe in the men’s long jump at the 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea, was at that time an assistant coach for sprints, hurdles and jumps at Drake University.

But Makusha has since left Drake University and is now coaching at the University of California in the United States.

Maguranyanga is no longer “feeling at home” at Drake University following the departure of his fellow Zimbabwean.

“Kundai has already submitted a transfer portal to the authorities at Drake University and as soon as his name is in the transfer portal they won’t be able to stop him.

“The dangers are that if those universities which were promising him scholarships disappear, he is in trouble.

“However, there are four coaches who have already contacted him for his signature but he wants to move to Texas Christian University where he will re-united with Darryl Anderson and I don’t think there will be any complications in this move,” the source told The Herald yesterday.

So what is this transfer portal?

Essentially, it’s a database of every player or athlete who has interest in transferring from his or her current school.

The portal includes every collegiate sport, so a coach could theoretically track the athletes’ transfers.

How does a student-athlete enter his/her name into the portal?

According to ESPN, it’s very simple:

They go to their school’s compliance department and tell them they want to be entered into the transfer portal. Some schools ask the student-athlete to tell the coach first, but once a player goes to compliance and makes the request, they have 48 hours to be entered into the portal.

Compliance and/or the coaching staff can’t say no; they can only delay it for a day or two. At the end of the day, the transfer request has to be fulfilled.

Once a student-athlete’s name is in the portal, schools can begin to contact him/her — unless the student-athlete puts “do not contact” on the entry. Also, being in the portal doesn’t necessarily mean the athlete is leaving. A player can remove his/her name from the portal.

Prior to his arrival at Drake University, Maguranyanga was placed second in 200m at 2017 Junior African Games and was placed first with Zimbabwe 4x100m relay team at the same championships in Algeria.
