Chitembwe predicts tough duel

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe has predicted a tough encounter against Highlanders, but remains confident his charges will prevail when the two teams clash in the biggest fixture of the Week Two programme at Barbourfields on Sunday.

The Green Machine are coming from a fine season-opening victory over new boys Manica Diamonds, a result which Chitembwe believes gave his team some confidence ahead of the epic clash. But the gaffer knows Bosso are a tricky customer especially when they are playing at their Barbourfields fortress.

Highlanders will be desperate to get their season going after they dropped two points in their 1-1 draw against Black Rhinos last week.

Makepekepe have been boosted by the recovery of striker Dominic Chungwa who was initially feared to miss action for at least a fortnight after he hobbled off with a groin sprain last week.

Chitembwe has declared all his players fit for selection in the build-up to the clash.

“We are expecting a very difficult game against Highlanders on Sunday. It’s never easy playing Highlanders especially at Barbourfields,” said Chitembwe.

“It is going to be a very difficult game. It’s important to win games. That’s obviously the reason why we train and compete.”

Chitembwe reckons his team is not yet in the shape he wants them to be.

“We are not yet a finished product. There are still a lot of things that I personally feel we need to work on for us to be at a level where we really feel that we are ready to win games.

“So we still have a lot of work to do. The game against Highlanders hasn’t come too early because we are both big teams needing to win at all costs.

“But I am sure we have the capacity and the belief to go out there and compete. Our aim is to go out there and win.”

Chitembwe’s team boasts of former Highlanders players including Newman Sianchali, Gabriel Nyoni as well as Valentine Ndaba but the mentor has no special instruction for them.

“There are no any special instructions which I am giving former Highlanders players like Gabriel Nyoni and Newman Sianchali. I believe they are professionals and know what it means to play in a big game.”

Beast braces for mind boggling record

JOHANNESBURG. — Sharks’ Zimbabwe-born prop Tendai Mtawarira says he never thought he would one day become the most capped South African in Super Rugby history.

That is exactly what will happen today, though, when the Sharks take on the Lions at Ellis Park.

Mtawarira will earn his 157th Super Rugby cap, moving one ahead of former Springbok captain Adriaan Strauss, who ended on 156 having represented both the Bulls and the Cheetahs in his career.

“It’s mind-boggling to realise that I’ve played so many games,” the man affectionately known as “Beast” told media in Durban on Wednesday.

“I never thought about achieving big milestones in my career. I just wanted to keep on improving and that every opportunity I got to pull on the jersey was an opportunity for me to play my heart out.

“I focused on enjoying every single game and every moment. Before I knew it, it was 50 games and then 100 and now 157 on Saturday. I’m just very grateful.”

It was a long time ago, but Mtawarira still remembers his Super Rugby debut vividly.

“It was against the Waratahs in 2007,” he recalled.

“I got picked by Dick Muir on the bench and I came on for the last 20 minutes.

“We won that game and went on to have a great season and we lost to the Bulls right here at Kings Park.”

That final was the one where that famous Bryan Habana try broke Sharks hearts, but that season was the beginning of what will go down as one of the most illustrious careers in the history of Springbok rugby.

Kick-off in Johannesburg today is at 7:10pm.

Nyagura ready for WBA title

ZIMBABWE Boxing guru Stalin Mau-Mau has tipped Kudakwashe Nyagura to prevail in her historic Women International Boxing Association Intercontinental super fly weight title bout against highly rated Alice Mbewe of Zambia.

The two will trade leather at the Lusaka Government Complex in Zambia tomorrow.

This is the first time a female boxer from Zimbabwe will be contesting for a WIBA title and for Nyagura, who is affectionately known as the “Small Dynamite” in the ring, the opportunity to fight for the vacant title came as a surprise as she only has three professional bouts under her belt.

But, the 19-year old, who hails from Hatfield, is scheduled to fly to Zambia this afternoon and ready to tussle for the prestigious title against her more fancied opponent who has been in the trenches for many years.

Mau-Mau who manages Nyagura from his stable and also had former Commonwealth champion Arifonso “Mosquito’’ Zvenyika under his wings, described his latest find as “a boxer who has a big heart which can carry the day for her.

“This is a historic event for female boxing in the country. It is extremely inspiring to other female boxers. I am very optimistic that Nyagura will make a big impression in the bout.

She has prepared hard and her work ethic is super, I am confident, she will make it,” he said.

On the same bill, Charles Manyuchi’s Academy boxers will also have a chance to participate in preparatory contests.

The young boxers will be looking to participate in a big rehearsal against the Zambians.

Manyuchi still has a running contract with Zambian promoters Oriental Quarries and he is not new to the Zambian terrain.

Now he wants his boxers to navigate the ways which led him to both fame and fortune.

National bantamweight champion Hassan Milanzi will take on rising Zambian prospect Philemon Hara with Brendon Dennis set to exchange leather with Raphiel Kasoma in the lightweight category.

The ever-improving Evans Usavihwevhu will be keen to extend his unbeaten run against Bazla Ngoza in the lightweight division.

The only female boxer from Manyuchi’s stable going to Zambia, Kudakwashe Chiwandire has a date with Sandra Phiri in the bantamweight pool while Tinashe Majoni’s flyweight opponent is yet to be determined. Manyuchi expressed confidence his boxers will prevail.

“We are busy preparing for the May 25 fight and it is against this background that we are taking boxers from this country for the Zimbabwe versus Zambia contest. This is a perfect platform to prepare the main event on May 25.

“At the moment it is preparation time and we hope that the boxers from Zimbabwe will hoist high the Zimbabwean flag.

“Some of the boxers going to Zambia will be involved in title fights on May 25, so they will have to see which areas they still need to work on,’’ Manyuchi said.

Makusha, Tsumba set for Euro tour

HARDLY a week after being part of the Zimbabwe men’s 4x100m relay team that broke a 12-year-old national record, doors to international stardom have opened for two of the country’s promising sprinters Ngonidzashe Makusha and Tatenda Tsumba who have been invited to participate in five high profile track and field meetings in The Netherlands and Belgium in May and June.

Last Saturday, Makusha and Tsumba joined forces with Itayi Vambe and Dickson Kamungeremu at the Lefika Athletics Club Relays and Hurdles Event in Gaborone, Botswana, where they wrote their own piece of history by setting a new national record when coming first in the 4x100m relay in 38.95 seconds.

This saw them qualifying for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Relays Championships to be held in Yokohama, Japan, in May.

The quartet’s winning time also bettered the previous 4x100m national record of 39.16 seconds set by Ngonidzashe Makusha, who is now based in United States and not related to the other Makusha and namesake who is in the current team, Gabriel Mvumvure, Brian Dzingai and Lewis Banda at the 2007 All-Africa Games (now African Games) in Algeria.

And Zimbabwe men’s 4x100m relay team’s recent feat in Gaborone caught the attention of a number of top athletics agencies, including former Zimbabwean sprinter and Olympian, Lloyd Zvasiya, who has now engineered a move for two of the team’s members, Makusha and Tsumba, to go and compete in five track and field meetings in The Netherlands and Belgium next month.

They will be joined there by another promising Zimbabwean athlete Panashe Majuru, who is a 400m specialist and a 110m hurdler.

In fact, after learning about the Zimbabwe men’s 4x100m relay team’s feat in Gaborone last Saturday night, Zvasiya, who is based in the UK, immediately got in touch with Peter Wolters, the director and head coach of the Dutch-based Milers Foundation, who invited the trio of Makusha, Tsumba and Majuru to compete in five international track and field meetings in that country and in Belgium between May and June this year.

Started in 2015 with the ambition of Sanne Wolters-Verstegen to run 1’59” in the 800m, the Milers Foundation was set up to create a full-time training environment with appointed head coach Wolters.

And according to the invitation letters sent to Makusha, Tsumba and Majuru by Wolters on Wednesday this week, the three Zimbabwean athletes have been invited to first compete in the Ter Specke Bokaal track and field meet at Lisse, Netherlands, on May 18.

They will then move on to Oordegem, Belgium, for the International Flanders track and field meet scheduled for May 25 and five days later the Zimbabwean athletes are expected to compete in the Harry Schulting Games in Vught, Netherlands.

Another international track and field meet — Putbos Meeting — awaits Makusha, Tsumba and Majuru in Oordegem, Belgium, on June 2 before they wind up their tour of Europe by competing in the Gouden Spike meet in Leiden, Netherlands, on June 9.

Speaking to The Herald yesterday, Zvasiya, who is based in the UK, said as a former top Zimbabwean sprinter, he just wanted to help his fellow countrymen to realise their dreams of becoming top international track and field stars.

But Zvasiya said Makusha, Tsumba and Majuru will have to raise their own air fares for the trip to Europe while food, accommodation and other expenses will be catered for by their hosts Milers Foundation.

“It looks like the guys will first go and compete at the 2019 IAAF World Relays, which will be held in Yokohama, Japan, from May 12 to May 13 and I think instead of flying back to Zimbabwe after this competition, they should connect to The Netherlands where they will be hosted by the Milers Foundation from May 17 to June 10,” Zvasiya said.

Makusha, Tsumba and Majuru have all been cleared by the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe to tour Europe between May and June this year.

Arsenal duo fit for Toffees clash

LONDON. — Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny are expected to shrug off knocks to feature against Everton tomorrow in the English Premier League. Wales international Ramsey was forced off in the second half of the win over Newcastle United on Monday, with what at first appeared to be a recurrence of his recent thigh problem.

Koscielny sat out the encounter against the Magpies but now the Frenchman and Ramsey are thought to be ready for the trip to Merseyside to face Everton.

There are still some doubts for manager Unai Emery over the fitness of Switzerland international Granit Xhaka, who suffered an abductor injury playing for the national side and faces a race to be fit for the clash at Goodison Park.

But Arsenal manager Unai Emery is “very happy” with how Mesut Ozil has responded to his demand for the German playmaker to become more consistent.

Ozil found himself out of favour with the Spaniard after the Christmas period, appearing in just one of seven games for Arsenal, as Emery called for him to give more effort in training.

The 30-year-old has gradually worked himself back into the first-team reckoning in recent weeks, appearing in each of Arsenal’s last five league matches, and starting in three of the last four.

Asked if Ozil is working harder, Emery replied: “Yes. He is working very well, he is playing well and he is helping us. I am very happy with him.

“I think now in the team we have a good atmosphere and good spirit. Each player is helping us with his quality and with good behaviour.

“This is the spirit I want so they are doing that, and Mesut is also.”

The Gunners are currently fourth in the Premier League table as they battle to guarantee Champions League football for next season.

Meanwhile, Son Heung-min labelled himself the “happiest guy in the world” after securing his place in Tottenham’s history.

The South Korean became the first player to score a competitive goal at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs celebrated moving home by beating Crystal Palace 2-0 in a housewarming party to remember.

He takes his place in the record books alongside Tom Smith, who scored the first goal at White Hart Lane way back in 1899.

Asked if the goal, which was heavily deflected and eased the tension after a nervy opening 55 minutes, was the best moment of his Spurs career, he said: “Yes, probably. Every single moment at Tottenham is special.

It means a lot, especially tonight I am very proud of my teammates, proud of this stadium, proud of the fans. Everything is positive at the moment. I am really the happiest guy in the world.

“It is amazing, to play in this amazing stadium and give me this opportunity, it is unbelievable. It was a great result, that is the most important thing.”

Spurs were away for 689 days and had to play at Wembley 51 times while White Hart Lane was demolished and their majestic 62 062-seater stadium was built.

The win over Palace, which was secured by Christian Eriksen’s late goal, was only the second time Spurs’ players have been to the stadium but Son says it already feels like home.

“It sounded very loud,” he said. “Wembley is one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world but it was not actually our home.

“We finally felt like we came back home, on the pitch, but also in the stands as well, it was so loud, it gave us a boost for this moment.”

Tongoona exudes confidence

Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE’S Davis Cup non-playing captain Gwinyai Tongoona is optimistic they can pull off an upset against Romania in their Europe/Africa Group II tie after a fair start that will see them going into today’s matches tied at 1-1 with their opponents. Zimbabwe’s number two player Benjamin Lock ranked 546 had a good day on the court upsetting Romania’s Marius Copil ranked 80 in the first rubber of the tie 6-4, 7-5 as he set the tone for the day.

Although the hosts appear to be the favouriets, ranked number 42 against Zimbabwe, who are ranked 61, Benjamin proved that anything is possible as he made the day for Zimbabwe when he overpowered Copil to take Zimbabwe into the lead.

However, in the second rubber Takanyi Garanganga went down 3-6, 3-6 to Dima Dragos. Both teams have everything to play for when the tie continues today with the doubles and the reverse singles.

Tongoona said it’s anyone’s game and is hopeful they can get a favourable result today.

“Very good performance from both (players). Benjamin really played well and I think this is the first win by a Zimbabwean player over someone in the top 100 in a long time.

“Takanyi was unfortunate not to get a result but he played a very high level game. Hopefully we can pull off a couple of wins tomorrow.

“Yes they (Romania) are favourites, they have higher ranked players and more experience. But as a team we know that if we work hard and fight for each and every point we are capable of causing an upset,” said Tongoona.

Zimbabwe will be hoping to draw some inspiration from Benjamin’s win yesterday. The 26-year-old is set to partner his younger brother Courtney for the doubles which will be the first match of the day. They will clash with Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea.

Garanganga will then face Copil and Benjamin will take on Dima in the reverse singles.

Shot in the arm for Chapungu

Mukudzei Chingwere Sports Reporter
GWERU-BASED Premiership football side Chapungu United and mobile network service provider NetOne renewed their vows, giving the airmen wings to make a big impression in the ongoing league marathon. Coach Rodwell Dhlakama’s men started the season with an imposing 5-0 drubbing of Bulawayo Chiefs last weekend and the sponsorship package of RTGS$170 000 they received yesterday at Josiah Tungamirai Airforce Base is likely to motivate them further.

Chapungu host fellow uniformed forces Black Rhinos at Mandava tomorrow and Dhlakama said the new sponsorship package came in at the right time to boost his players’ morale.

Rhinos are also sponsored by NetOne.

“We need this kind of motivation to have a good impact on the league and I think this will help us achieve the objectives of the team, which initially is a top six finish.

“This is a derby and my bosses do not want to lose to Black Rhinos, we have never had problems in beating Black Rhinos and I think we will do that again,” said Dhlakama.

Chapungu’s chief executive Elisha Masakadza expressed gratitude over the package and also assured club supporters that the team will be back playing at their fortress (Ascot) in the not-so-distant future.

“Among other things, this sponsorship package will take care of the winning bonuses of players, which is a motivation on its own and we are very happy with the sponsorship package.

“Ascot Stadium is owned by Gweru City, but I want to assure the people of Gweru that playing at Mandava is a temporary measure and very soon we will be back at Ascot so that they can watch their team in action.

‘There is some work being done at Ascot and soon it will be ready,” said Masakadza.

NetOne chief executive Lazarus Muchenje said they are happy to be associated with Chapungu because of their exceptional service excellence.

“We want to be associated with people who do not damage our brand and the way Chapungu, their players and coaches conduct themselves motivates us to continue associating with them.

“I also want to clarify that those who are paying with One Money at any stadium in the PSL will pay half price and the difference will be paid by NetOne,” said Muchenje.

Bonne gets passport boost

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
MACAULEY Bonne is excited with the strides he has made in applying for a Zimbabwean passport which could make him eligible for selection for the upcoming African Cup of Nations football finals in Egypt. The England-born forward, however, might need to go through a complex process before he can be available for the Warriors following the recent amendments to the Zimbabwe Citizenship Bill.

Bonne, who has been a long time target for successive Warriors coaches  — Callisto Pasuwa and Sunday Chidzambwa — has been dithering in the past, but he announced yesterday that he has completed the first part of his passport application.

Marshall Gore of the Team Zimbabwe UK said the forward has received assistance from the Zimbabwe Embassy in England.

“We’re pleased to inform you that we have successfully facilitated and completed the first phase of Macauley Bonne’s passport application at the Zimbabwe UK Embassy today.

“We’re now working very close with the national team manager Wellington Mpandare in ensuring that the process is completed and finalised in Zimbabwe without any further delays.

“Macauley was so pleased and relieved to see this process through. He is fully committed to be part of the Zimbabwe national team in future assignments.

“We want to thank Macauley’s family and his agent Matthew Halford for their support in making this mission possible. We would also like to thank the staff at the Zimbabwe Embassy for being helpful,” said Gore.

Team Zimbabwe UK are one of the pressure groups that have been pushing for players with Zimbabwean roots to come back and represent their fatherland.

Nottingham Forrest defender Tendayi Darikwa has played a role in the national team’s qualification for the upcoming African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt.

Leicester City Under-23’s Admiral Muskwe, although he did not feature, was part of the squad that played the last game against Congo which Zimbabwe won 2-0 to seal their qualification. Warriors coach Chidzambwa had wanted Bonne for the Congo game, but the player was taking his time to present his papers to the passport office.

But Bonne this week also had a chance to officially meet Zimbabwe’s ambassador in England, Christian Katsande, who welcomed him at Zimbabwe House and wished him well in his endeavours with his club and the national team.

His papers will be sent to Registrar-Genera’s Office in Harare for processing.

The next target for the Team Zimbabwe UK is England Under-21 midfielder Reiss Nelson, who is currently in the books of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in Germany.

“We want to reassure all the Warriors fans that we’re fully behind the national team and we will continue to work in close collaboration with ZIFA, supporting fully the gradual integration of the Diaspora-based players in the national team set-up based on merit.

“Our next target now is Reiss Luke Nelson. He is eligible to play for Zimbabwe due to his Zimbabwean heritage through his father.

“We’re currently working very closely with Mr Mpandare, pursuing discussions with the player’s management team. We’re hoping for a good outcome,” said Gore.

But the efforts could face some hitches after Cabinet recently approved the amendment of the Zimbabwe Citizenship Act which permits dual citizenship only for citizens by birth.

The development will see every Zimbabwean citizen by birth, especially those in the Diaspora, being entitled to dual citizenship and that the law will not require them to renounce their foreign citizenship before they could be issued with a Zimbabwean national identity document.

Once it’s signed into law, the situation will be a complete opposite for those who were born outside and want to claim citizenship by descent. The likes of Darikwa, Bonne and Nelson were born in UK.

However, Mpandare said they are looking to get exemptions as has happened before with the likes of legendary goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar and golfer Nick Price who represented the country with distinction on the international stage.

ZRU speak on Cheetahs

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor
ZIMBABWE Rugby Union have hailed the culture of foreign-based Zimbabweans to support their national teams and insisted that the gesture extended to the Cheetahs by the Hong Kong community was not a sign that Gilbert Nyamutsamba and his men had been reduced to beggars at the ongoing World series tournament. The Cheetahs are in Hong Kong where their bid for qualification for the world Series took a knock after suffering defeats to Tonga and Hong Kong in their opening pool games.

Tonga handed the Cheetahs a 29-12 defeat before the Southern African team lost to Hong Kong. The two defeats left them lying third in Pool E with two points and four behind leaders Hong Kong and Tonga who both have six points. Philippines anchor the standings after also suffering heavy defeats to Tonga and Hong Kong. Earlier in the week the Cheetahs were hosted by the Hong Kong community which includes some Zimbabweans based in that country who had mobilised some funds and boots which were donated to Nyamutsamba and his men.

But some sections of the local game interpreted that to mean that the ZRU had literally abandoned the Cheetahs and left them to go to Hong Kong to beg for everything including their meals and accommodation.

ZRU president Arron Jani and his leadership which also includes Martin Shone and Losson Mtongwiza also joined the Cheetahs in Hong Kong early yesterday morning.

The union, also spoke on the Cheetahs situation through a statement they issued yesterday.

“Following reports this week on the Zambezi Cheetahs we believe we should assist with giving additional information regarding the team’s affairs at the Hong Kong Sevens.

“The Cheetahs were invited in 2007 and have taken part in the tournament since, the Hong Kong Sevens Tournament is the best funded tournament that the Cheetahs take part in.

“Flights, all the meals, refreshments, all the transfers and accommodation is catered for, has been and still is world standard.

“Our boys have stayed at some of the best hotels in Hong Kong and the ZRU caters for medical cover and whenever possible allowances.  “Being an amateur sport in Zimbabwe, boots are and have always been a personal item which is funded personally, in some occasions as with all sports players attract individual sponsors as they did at the world cup in San Francisco last year where Mizuno sponsored the players.

“Individuals such as Tendai “Beast’’ Mtawarira have also made individual donations of boots etcetera and we are grateful for their generosity. “The Hong Kong community of fans has always held fundraisers for the team, it is the culture of foreign based Zimbabwean fans in any sport to support their players in the ways they relate to them — this has been a gesture of adoration more than anything else,’’ the ZRU said.

“As a union we face the challenge of access to foreign currency for our travelling teams as the availability of it, in the timelines we need it is a hurdles we always have to jump — one which the Reserve bank of Zimbabwe has sometimes aided us when we needed it’’.

Meanwhile the much awaited Super 6 league gets underway this afternoon, starting a 12-week marathon that will culminate in the cup final on August 24.

The league will run concurrently with the Harare Province League which features men’s Division One and Two leagues as well as the Women’s League — both divisions are the lower tier promotional competitions comprising of nine teams in each.

At least 35 matches will take place during the 12 weeks of the Super 6 action with two breaks slotted in between to allow for the Sables’ participation in the SuperSport Challenge from May 4 to June 16 and in the Rugby Africa Gold Cup from July 6- 13.

There is no doubting that the biggest game of the opening weekend of Super 6 action pits Old Georgians Dragons against bitter rivals Old Hararians in Groombridge.

In other matches today Old Miltonians face Matabeleland Warriors at Hartsfield while Harare Sports Club host Mutare Sports Club in the clash of the lions at The Machinery Exchange Stadium.

Odds against CAPS at BF

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
THE odds are stacked heavily against CAPS United ahead of their Battle of the Cities clash with traditional rivals Highlanders, but the Green Machine believe they could start a new chapter when the giants clash at Barbourfields in a league match tomorrow.

CAPS United left for Bulawayo yesterday with unwanted records hanging over their heads as Barbourfields apparently turned into a miserable hunting ground over the years.

Makepekepe have only won once in over a decade. Successive coaches and players have struggled to find the formula to break the jinx and this has led current coach Lloyd Chitembwe to summon all his faculties this week.

No doubt, it is going to be a difficult outing as Chitembwe acknowledged during the weekly Press conference, but the Green Machine are in high spirits following the unveiling of a $700 000 sponsorship package by NetOne and the 2-0 win over newboys Manica Diamonds in their opening match at the National Sports stadium last week.

This blockbuster Battle of the Cities may have come earlier than is usually expected, but Chitembwe believes the stability brought by the financial injection in their camp will help work the miracle this season.  Highlanders are also bankrolled by the telecommunications giants.

“It’s a huge feeling within the club, an unbelievable feeling within the playing team and it’s great to have NetOne in there,” said Chitembwe.

“In any case, they have brought in the much-needed stability in as much as the spirit is concerned because what stabilises the spirit is when the finances are okay.

“I am sure at the moment our finances are okay and we are looking forward to make sure we play with responsibility in terms of protecting the brand and I am sure we are more than capable of doing that,” said Chitembwe.

Makepekepe have all their players available for the game except probably for returning striker Dominic Chungwa, who picked a groin injury last week.

Strikers Gabriel Nyoni and Newman Sianchali, who crossed the floor during the pre-season break, could also be part of Chitembwe’s plans to upset their opponents. Makepekepe last won a match at Barbourfields five years ago when they dispatched their opponents 1-0.

This was only the second time that they had beaten Bosso at Barbourfields since 2006.

But after last week’s display with goals from Joel Ngodzo and John Zhuwawu, Chitembwe is hoping for more from his charges. He wants to see them winning away. “I hope to see a reaction after a good home performance.

“I just want to see how they react away from the usual and familiar environment. I am looking forward to experience that,” said Chitembwe.

Highlanders started off their campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Black Rhinos.

But the Bosso family believe it will be a changed script at fortress Babourfields where Madinda Ndlovu’s men will be hoping to make first impressions on their multitude of fans.

They will no doubt also bank on history to repeat itself.

New deal for Messi on the table

BARCELONA. — Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says he is determined to ensure Lionel Messi remains a “one-club man” forever and is ready to offer him a new contract. Messi, who joined Barcelona as a 13-year-old, signed a new four-year contract at the Nou Camp in November 2017 but Bartomeu says the club are already looking to extend that deal.

The 31-year-old has been in sensational form this season, scoring 42 goals in 39 games, and Bartomeu wants Messi to be forever linked with Barcelona, even after he hangs up his boots.

“We would like to renew his contract, that’s the idea. He is young – you can see that – and he still has two years on his deal,” he told ESPN.

“He’s always improving, always innovating. I believe he still has many years in front of him and in the coming months we will sit down with him so that he has many more years at Barcelona.

“Messi is a one-club man. It’s more than what he does on the pitch – his relationship with Barca will last forever. I use the example of Pele, who was always at Santos. We want Messi to always be at Barca, whether that’s playing or linked to the club.

“We want him to have a really long career so we can keep on enjoying him. Lionel’s managed to break down borders. Everyone admires him and he’s applauded at other stadiums by rival fans.”

Messi has won nine La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and six Copa del Rey crowns, with Barcelona eight points clear in the league and in another domestic cup final already this season. They are also set to face Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

DeMbare to unleash Cameroonian Mbega

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
DYNAMOS’ Cameroonian midfielder Vincent Hevre Mbega has promised to live up to the hype that greeted his arrival at the Harare giants in the pre-season. Mbega is likely to make his debut for the Harare giants tomorrow when they host fired-up Premiership returnees Hwange at Rufaro. The former Cameroon youth international and his compatriot Claude Junior Ngahan were yesterday cleared by the Immigration Department to work legally in Zimbabwe after missing the opening fixture against Mushowani last Saturday.

“Dynamos are a good side. I think I have fallen in love with the club during the brief period that I have worked with them. I promise to put my best and help get the team to the top.

“I just hope I get selected to play. I watched from the terraces last week when we played our first game and it seems we have the potential. I also observed areas that need strengthening and if given the opportunity to play, I hope to add value.

“I know many things have been said and written about me and it strengthens me. Above all, I hope to deliver on my promises,” said Mbega.

DeMbare started off on a bright note when they dismissed the newboys 2-0, courtesy of a brace by Congolese forward Ngandu Mangala.

Their opponents Hwange beat Yadah by the same margin at the Colliery and will bring a largely unchanged squad to the capital.

Unfortunately for DeMbare, their striker Mangala may not be available for the game tomorrow after picking up an ankle injury in the season opener.

Captain Edward Sadomba returns to the battlefront after recovering from the knee injury that sidelined him from the first game.

DeMbare coach Lloyd Chigowe believes his side is still to get to the level he expects but is confident they will take it up from where they left off.

“From the starting point team building is always a process but I think if we put on the good shift we are good to collect the three points and as we go on our exhibition will be much better than it is now,” said Chigowe.

The coach appealed to the club’s fans to rally behind their team especially at Rufaro where they are set to play not less than 23 games this season.

Chigowe, however believes there is no advantage in playing more games at their fortress.

“There are pros and cons. It means there are many local derbies, there will be no easy game for us. Every Harare team wants to get one over Dynamos so it will be a fight.

“There is no advantage to Dynamos, there is no advantage to the opposition but we will fight and find a way through,” said Chigowe.

Fixtures:

Darikwa’s romance with Mbare

Ellina Mhlanga Sports Reporter
THEY had never met before and a call-up to the senior national football team was all the England-born star needed to get connected to his family in Zimbabwe for the first time.

Tendayi Darikwa was born 27 years ago in England and had not found an opportunity to meet his paternal aunt Mary-Emma Kumbirai Darikwa. Having spent all his life in Nottingham, England, Tendayi made his first visit to Zimbabwe in 2017 after a call-up to the Warriors as the drive to include players with Zimbabwean roots based in Europe started to yield results.

Mary-Emma Darikwa, who stays in Harare’s high-density of Mbare, describes her first meeting with her nephew as one of the best moments in her life.

“We first met in 2017 when he came to play for the Warriors. That was our first physical meeting.  Then he came back last year and this year again for the national team games. But over the years we had been in touch and they used to send us pictures.

“When he came for the first time, he actually called and told us that he was at Rainbow Towers, so we went there to meet him.

“When we got there he had gone to his room, so when he came back where we were waiting for him, he just started jumping and he was asked by (Warriors manager) Wellington Mpandare if he knew us and he said these are my relatives. They are look-alikes with my father.

“I was really happy, overjoyed because we used to talk over the phone and they would send their pictures but we had not met in person before. I was with my mother and my son Tino, so we were really overjoyed.

“His call-up to the Warriors was something huge for us because it’s something positive for our family name. We feel so proud and a lot has changed since he first came home. We feel so close and it’s a perfect family reunion,” said Mary-Emma.

Although distance has kept them apart, she says they have always heard about their nephew’s passion for football since he was young.

And when she speaks about Tendayi, one can see from the smile and glow on her face that she is a proud aunt.

“He has always been passionate about football. The interest was always there because as early as seven years he was already playing football, we would communicate with his father saying he has taken him for practice. So the signs were there. We wish him the best in his career.

“His father was also good at football, but he never showed serious interest. But we had our younger brother, Tendayi’s uncle David (also Tendayi’s middle name), he used to play football. He played for Dynamos juniors but then decided to pursue his academics.

“He used to play with Clayton Munemo, they went to the same school at Mufakose High 1. So I can say it’s something that runs in the family although most of them did not really pursue it’’.

The family have made it a point to go and watch the Warriors matches when Tendayi comes for national team duty. On the other hand, the Warriors defender makes sure he visits his aunt whenever he comes to Zimbabwe.

“We always go to watch him playing when he comes here. We went for the DRC game and on March 24 (when Zimbabwe played Congo) we were there together with his grandmother. As a family we are proud of him, it brings joy to us to watch him playing.

“He also comes here in Mbare to visit us and we spend lots of time together. Most of the time we talk about football even when he is in camp we send him messages just to encourage him. He is very friendly, humble and always interacts with people around here when he comes.”

Tendai “Ndado” Mupeta, a Dynamos and Warriors fan who stays in the same neighbourhood with Darikwa’s aunt near Mbare National’s popular Jabulani Stores area just opposite Beatrice Cottages, said many folks who stay around there were surprised to see the Nottingham Forest defender visiting his aunt every time he comes for national team duties.

“The first time I saw Tendayi Darikwa coming out from his aunt’s place I indicated to them that the England-based Warriors defender was in our neighbourhood and they thought I was bluffing.

“And they finally realised that I was telling them the truth when he (Tendayi Darikwa) started interacting with us and they could tell that he was not a local lad because of his English accent.

“Many couldn’t believe that he would come down here and sleep at his aunt’s place in Mbare . . . Imagine one coming all the way from England and sleep at some kind of a match-box house here in Mbare.

“A lot of people from this area just couldn’t believe it. But Tendayi Darikwa is just a humble and a down to earth man and he was fascinated to see the new surroundings in this old high-density suburb of Mbare and its dusty streets . . . We were all really chaffed to have him as our guest,” Mupeta said.

But unbeknown to Tendayi Darikwa, Mbare National has produced a number of talented players who went on to play for both the Young Warriors and the Warriors and these include Dynamos captain Edward Sadomba who was born and grew up in Muchirahondo Street together with his former teammate at DeMbare goalkeeper Tichaona Diya.

Muchirahondo Street is just a stone’s throw away from the house where Tendayi Darikwa’s aunt lives.

Mbare National is also the home of former Black Aces dribbling wizard Benard “Machipisa” Dzingayi, ex-Dynamos centre striker Boniface “Achimwene” Kabwe, former Black Aces skilful midfielder Moses “Gwejegweje” Chasweka and his younger brother Alex “Chola” Chasweka.

Another former Black Aces player Innocent “Mbazo” Musapenda also hails from the same area in Yotamu Way together with the ex-Premiership side’s goalkeeper Leon “Tingo” Linyama, father to former Dynamos and Black Rhinos defender Sydney.

And by the way, the country’s most popular club — Dynamos — have their roots firmly in Mbare.

UPCOMING athlete Vimbai Maisvorewa is seeing her prospects of representing Zimbabwe at the Africa Junior Track and Field Championships vanishing into thin air as she is struggling to fund her trip to Ivory Coast. Maisvorewa is facing a shortfall of US$100 and RTGS$600 to cater for her kit and travel needs. The 18-year-old managed to set new records in athletics after being discovered in the Osborne Dam community and offered a scholarship at Hillcrest College where she is doing Lower Six. The school’s athletics coach Ted De Wolfe said the teenager, who has won several medals in international competitions, has been hampered by lack of funding.

“Vimbai is not just a super athlete. She deserves every chance to use her God-given talent and to move forward with her career, but funding has been a huge challenge. She was born in humble circumstances, but is gifted incredibly in sport,” said De Wolfe.

Maisvorewa was scouted from the community and offered a full bursary by Hillcrest College, where she has made it to national championships and set new records in 400m and long jump. On April 13, she is meant to travel to Cote d’Ivoire, but the school has emptied their coffers and her coach De Wolfe took an advance on his salary to help fund the trip.

“We are now out by US$100 and $600 bond notes so that this young girl can go and represent our country. Teachers at Hillcrest have voluntarily taken part of their salaries to give to Vimbai because they know her future is bright.

WARRIORS goalkeeper George Chigova regrets the yellow cards he accumulated during Zimbabwe’s successful campaign in the AFCON qualifiers after CAF confirmed he will be suspended for the opening match at the finals in Egypt.

The giant goalkeeper, who is set to make his debut at the AFCON finals, picked up two yellow cards during the later stages of the qualifying campaign.

According to the rules, the penalty will follow him to the tournament proper and this would mean the giant goalkeeper will delay his AFCON debut.

“The referee’s decision is final, but that guy from Congo kicked me and I felt I needed medical attention. But now it’s painful, I am going to miss the game. This is supposed to be my first AFCON finals and I was looking forward to be playing the first game, but such this things happen in football.

“We all just need to stay focused. Remember (Marvellous) Nakamba missed the first game at the last AFCON also, but I trust whoever is going to be called for the job will do it well for the nation,” said Chigova.

Defender Tendayi Darikwa and Tinotenda Kadewere were also booked in that match.

CAF wrote to ZIFA on Sunday, reminding them of Chigova’s suspension.

“We would like to confirm the disciplinary measures taken against player(s) of your team at the above-mentioned match.

“We remind you that the referee report is authoritative regarding incidents that occurred on the field of play. The referee of the above-mentioned match has reported to the Disciplinary Board that the following players were cautioned: Tendayi David Darikwa, Philana Tinotenda Kadewere and George Chigova. For having received two cautions in two different matches in the frame of this competition (matches #139 and #67), player no. 16 George Chigova is automatically suspended for his next match.

“Seeing as your team was qualified for the final tournament of the 32nd Edition of Total Africa Cup of Nations 2019, player no. 16 George Chigova will be suspended for Zimbabwe’s first match in the frame of the AFCON 2019 group matches,” reads the letter.

UAE ropes in Cremer

THE United Arab Emirates team have turned to former Zimbabwe cricket captain Graeme Cremer for advice as they get ready to take on his old team in a four-match ODI that begins tomorrow at Harare Sports Club.

Cremer, who was the Zimbabwe skipper until the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier last year, was removed from captaincy after his team suffered a heartbreaking three-run loss to UAE, which resulted in them missing a spot in the main event.

The 32-year-old put his career on hold and moved to Dubai with his family, where his wife works as a pilot for Emirates Airlines, and has recently started working as a coaching consultant for the UAE’s representative teams.

The invitation for consultancy was extended by the national coach Dougie Brown and performance manager Will Kitchen, and he now faces the prospect of helping UAE go up against his former colleagues. “It happened overnight that Dougie and Will contacted me. We had a good chat, and it has been nice to be involved with the main side,” Cremer told The National.

“They are a great bunch of guys, and I enjoy working with Dougie and Will. It is really nice to be wanted, coming in to a consultancy role like this. I was really happy to come and help these guys because I knew they were really talented. They just haven’t been exposed to that higher level yet.”

Cremer, who has played 19 Tests, 96 ODIs and 29 T20Is for Zimbabwe, was particularly lavish in his praise for UAE’s leg-spinner Imran Haider, whom he thinks is a “real asset for UAE cricket”.

“I was really happy to come and help these guys, because I knew they were really talented.

“I haven’t seen an Associate leg-spinner like him. He has all the tricks, and has a good head on his shoulders. There is not much that needs changing there, but I think there are tactics and strategy where he could really learn a lot. He is a real asset to UAE cricket.”

Haider, who has 30 wickets in the 16 ODIs so far, acknowledged Cremer’s contribution to his development.

“It’s been great to have him working with us, as he’s a very experienced player, and it’s especially helpful for the spinners,” Haider said.

“He talks about the variations in bowling in the middle overs . . . and the right field to set when we are bowling, which has been very helpful.” — Sports Reporter/ICC Cricket.

Spurs ready to rock Man City

Hugo Lloris has endured a mistake-filled season, but the Tottenham goalkeeper knows his costly blunders will be forgotten if he can lead his side to Champions League football success against Manchester City.

Lloris will captain Tottenham in tonight’s All-English quarter-final first leg showdown with City at the north London club’s new stadium. The match kicks-off at 9pm.

And the France star will be firmly in the spotlight on what promises to be a busy evening given City’s attacking prowess.

Lloris has been well below his best for much of this term, with his latest clanger coming in the last minute of a damaging 2-1 defeat at Liverpool last weekend when he sparked a Toby Alderweireld own goal by spilling Mohamed Salah’s header.

The 32-year-old has shown alarmingly bad judgement all season.

In Tottenham’s 2-2 group stage draw against PSV Eindhoven, Lloris suffered a rush of blood as he needlessly sprinted outside his penalty area to foul Hirving Lozano, earning a straight red card that inspired the Dutch side to snatch a last- minute equaliser.

Lloris had already been at fault for Barcelona’s opening goal in the 4-2 group stage defeat at Wembley, which saw Tottenham fall behind with barely a minute on the clock.

The France captain was also embarrassed in last year’s World Cup final by Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic, although that blunder was ignored as his country carried home the trophy.

In the midst of these howlers, Lloris was arrested for drink-driving in London, an offence that earned him a 20-month driving ban and £50 000 fine.

Despite such a wretched run of form, Lloris has retained the support of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Reports in recent weeks claim Pochettino has no intention of looking for another keeper at the end of the season, such is his faith in Lloris.

Part of that belief is grounded in Lloris’s role as an influential figure in the dressing room.

That leadership earned him the captain’s armband and was on show as he issued a rallying cry to his team-mates ahead of the City clash.

With Tottenham bidding to reach their first European semi-final since the 1984 UEFA Cup, Lloris knows the team will need the vocal backing of the home support to rattle City.

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League title chasers are eyeing an unprecedented quadruple after reaching the FA Cup final and winning the League Cup already this season.

Chapungu, Rhinos Share Spoils

Zvishavane — Chapungu United and Black Rhinos lit up Zvishavane with a thrilling stalemate in a Castle Lager Premiership football match at Mandava yesterday.

Gweru-based side Air Force of Zimbabwe side Chapungu are temporarily using the stadium in Zvishavane as their home ground awaiting the completion facelift.

Chapungu came twice from behind to ensure a share of spoils against army side Black Rhinos in a match they both showed they can be surprise packages this season.

Moses Demera and Masimba Mambare were on target for Rhinos but all their efforts were cancelled out by Brighton Mugoni and Ian Nyoni who replied for the home side.

Chapungu started the campaign on fire with a convincing 5-0 drubbing of Bulawayo Chiefs at Mandava last weekend and yesterday’s result means that they are now on four points out of a possible six.

Rhinos last weekend drew against Bulawayo giants Highlanders and after yesterday’s game they remained unbeaten in two games with two points.

The visitors surged ahead after 17 minutes when Demera headed home Farai Banda’s cross.

Five minutes later the army side was asserting themselves into the contest when former Dynamos striker Francisco Zekumbawire’s rising shot crashed against the woodwork.

Ten minutes after the opening goal, Mugoni equalised for the airmen when he tapped in to level the scores after he was exquisitely fed by Allen Tavarwisa who had done some beautiful work on the left.

After half an hour of action, Mambare capitalised to give the visitors another lead, firing beyond Talbert Shumba who had failed to convincingly deal with an earlier effort.

Five minutes later the airmen were refusing to be cowed into submission and Nyoni was well positioned to fire home an intelligent rebound for another equaliser.

After the breather Chapungu were the better side asking all the questions following the tinkering of the engine room by coach Rodwell Dhlakama.

The airmen will feel they deserved full points but were not clinical enough to bury their fellow service men as Black Rhinos goalie Ashley Reyners produced a top drawer save right at the death to deny Nigel Hunga’s goal bound effort.

Chapungu coach Dhlakama said his team is still work in progress but expressed satisfaction that their progression is positive.

“We have started the campaign very well, though the team is not yet there I am happy with where we are at the moment.

“It was a good game of football and a point is not a bad result, focus is now on the next game and we want to work for maximum points.

“Everyone loves to play in front of their home supporters and it would have been good for us if we were playing in Gweru,” said Dhlakama.

Black Rhinos coach Herbert Maruwa commended his men for a good game and was happy that goals are coming.

“It was a good game and the good thing is that we managed to score first the only problem is that we failed to defend our goals.

“It is not easy to build a team but we are in the right direction and the good thing is that the goals are coming,” said Maruwa.

Teams

Chapungu: T. Shumba, E. Chitauro, H. Mugoniwa, C. Kwaramba, B. Mbavarira, E. Muzanenhamo, I. Nyoni, G. Mleya (N. Hunga, 50th min), A. Tavarwisa (M. Nyawuyanga. 87th min), B. Mugoni, X. Ncube (P. Marufu, 50th min).

Black Rhinos: A. Reyners, J. Mkombwe, F. Banda, B. Homora, A. Tandi, G. Saunyama, W. Taderera, M. Mambare (H. Chimutimunzeve, 81st min), T. Sibanda (E. Chigiji, 50th min), M. Demera, F. Zekumbawire (W. Kapinda, 63rd min)

Manica Diamonds Stun Harare City

Castle Lager Premiership football newcomers Manica Diamonds collected their first set of full points in a commendable fashion after dismissing an out-of-sorts Harare City at Gibbo yesterday.

The expensively assembled Manica Diamonds came into the match under pressure after losing 2-0 against CAPS United in their first league match last weekend.

Manica Diamonds had to come from a goal behind after conceding a second penalty in as many games.

Harare City took the lead on the 27th minute through Moses Muchenje who converted from the spot.

Manica Diamonds restored parity from the spot in the 44th minute through Tendai Kachambere.

The Gem Boys, as they are affectionately by their legions of fans, sealed the match with second half goals from the impressive Marshall Mudehwe in the 78th minute before Timire Mamvura put the final nail on Harare City’s coffin two minutes later.

Manica Diamonds gaffer Luke Masomere was ecstatic after the win.

“We were more organised than what we did against CAPS United. We are now looking forward to our next match against Triangle at this stadium (Gibbo) and it is going to be an interesting match, it motivates us to play good teams,” he said.

His counterpart Mark Harrison said Manica Diamonds deservedly won the match and was not happy with his players’ character in the opening two games.

“They deservedly won the match, the players were disappointing today (yesterday), we are going back to the drawing board so that we can correct our mistakes, we have a good squad and players,” Harrison said.

Manica Diamonds had a slow start to the match and they were almost punished just three minutes into the match after goalkeeper Jorum Muchambo made a suicidal error but thanks to Charlton Munzwamba who cleared the ball off the line after Ishmael Wadi’s effort at goal.

Manica Diamonds had their first real chance in the 11th minute when they won a free-kick on the edge of the box and Mudehwe’s shot was tipped over the bar for a corner by Maxwell Nyamupanedengu.

Harare City, who were pressing harder for the opener, were finally awarded a penalty in the 27th minute after Mpelele handled inside the box and referee Jimmy Makwanda correctly pointed to the spot.

And upstepped Moses Muchenje who sent Muchambo the wrong way for the game’s opener.

Harare City went to concede a penalty with just two minutes before the breather.

Tendai Kachembere did not hesitate to take the spot and scored his side’s first goal in the Premiership.

Manica Diamonds created more chances than their counterparts after the breather and were duly awarded with a nicely taken shot from Mudehwe outside the box in the 78th minute.

Former Dynamos player Timire Mamvura came to haunt Harare City three minutes later with a similar shot just outside the box to beat Nyamupanedengu.
