Coventry Calls for Athletes’ Support

$

YOUTH, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry says there is need for stakeholders to find a way to work together and ensure there is consistent support for athletes.

Coventry graced the belated 2018 Annual National Sports Awards last Friday night in Harare to honour outstanding athletes, officials and administrators.

Speaking on the sidelines of the function, Coventry, a former athlete herself, said there is need to ensure athletes are supported throughout the year.

“I think we have to be consistent. And I think we have to come together and figure out how we work together in terms of the different organisations — national federations, Government and the Sports Commission in terms of supporting the athletes consistently throughout the year, not just right before the big games.

“To do that and to try and do that constantly,” said Coventry.

Although the annual awards have become a permanent feature on the sports calendar, the local sporting fraternity have over the years cried foul over lack of funding.

And, of late, the awards seem to be losing their relevance, with some national associations choosing not to submit their nominations or, in some cases, there is no clear tracking system on athletes’ achievements.

Coventry said they have a lot to do if they are going to bring back corporates into sport and ensure there is a sense of trust within the fraternity.

“We need to work extremely hard to ensure that we have corporate sponsors coming back on board.

“And that’s only going to happen when we can start proving that there are some good things and good changes in sport.

“Hopefully, that’s going to happen in the next few weeks.

“I think that there is always improvement, I think we always have to try and be better.

“I think when it comes to what I was just talking about, the structures and re-looking at getting people on board, there has been a lot of mistrust from corporates, from national federations, and we have to win back that trust.”

The minister said while they can only encourage the national associations to submit their nominations, they were going to re-look at their structures, with the process to appoint the Sports Commission board underway.

The previous board was dissolved last October.

Bosso player strike persists

BY FORTUNE MBELE

DESPITE assurances that their salaries will be deposited soon, the majority of Highlanders’ senior players yesterday continued to stay away from training with the strike entering the second week ahead of the ZNA Charity Shield final at Barboufields Stadium on Sunday.

The striking players made it to Barbourfields Stadium yesterday, but refused to train and an address by chairman Kenneth Mhlophe did not yield any positive outcome as the players remained defiant saying they would only start training after their salaries reflected on their bank accounts.

The players embarked on an industrial action once again last week demanding their January and February salaries.

Emerging from the meeting with the players yesterday, Mhlophe confirmed the boys had refused to train.

“I don’t know who they want to trust if they cannot trust me. I told them that as I addressed the meeting, their monies were being processed and would reflect any minute and they should go for training. But they refused. I asked them what they were going to do if their monies reflected. Would they go for training?
And what are they going to say to the coach; that we are back?” he said.

Mhlophe said the boys were going to have problems with the coach and there was no way they were going to take part in the ZNA Charity Cup without training.

“The coach has also said that he cannot use players that are not training because that will be unfair to the players that are training. They cannot be training for others. Most likely, the players that are at training will play in the ZNA Charity Shield.

Coach Madinda Ndlovu has selected a number of players from the club’s Division One side Bosso 90, who trained together with striker Prince Dube, defenders Andrew Mbeba and Vincent Moyo as well as Mbekezeli Sibanda and Russell Chifura.

Dube signed with Highlanders in October last year together with Bukhosi Sibanda, while Mbeba and Moyo were promoted from Bosso 90.

Mbekezeli signed in January this year and played for Division One side Talen Vision before he went to Slovakia where he had a brief stint with Division Three side MSK Puchov, while Chifura is from Aces Youth Soccer Academy in Harare.

Bukhosi Sibanda was not part of the players on industrial action and did not train because he was recovering from an injury.

The senior players who were not part of the training yesterday include Peter Muduhwa, Ariel Sibanda, Tendai Ndlovu, Denzel Khumalo, Brain Banda, Mbongeni Ndlovu, Maclive Phiri, Adrian Silla, Ben Musaka, Tinashe Makanda, Ray Lunga, Godfrey Makaruse and new signings Nqobizitha Masuku, Cleopas
Kapupurika and goalkeeper Wellington Muuya.

Mhofu defends selection

BY TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA

WARRIORS’ coach Sunday Chidzambga is confident the squad he has selected for the decisive March 24 African Cup of Nations qualifying showdown against Congo Brazzaville in Harare will deliver the ticket to the finals in Egypt.

The Warriors gaffer yesterday named a 28-member squad for the crucial tie in Harare at a Press conference attended by Zifa president Felton Kamambo and board member in charge of competition Chamu Chiwanza.

The squad features three new faces — Germany-based forward Kelvin Lunga, Admiral Muskwe who plays for Lecester City in England and has also played for England Under-17 as well as Godknows Murwira who stars for FC Platinum.

Former Warriors captain Willard Katsande is the notable absentee while midfielder Kuda Mahachi, who was dropped for the away match to Liberia after a dip in form which saw him struggle to hold down a place at his club Orlando Pirates, has been recalled.

Chidzambga, who led Zimbabwe to their maiden appearance at the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia in 2004, believes his squad can deliver the fourth ticket to the biennial soccer showcase and made a passionate plea to all football stakeholders to work together to ensure the team achieves its goal.

“As a coach I would love to qualify for the second time, and we are all working. It’s work from the board and the technical team for us to qualify. We are all working day and night. But the responsibility to qualify Zimbabwe to the finals is not Chidzambga’s duty alone, neither is it Kamambo’s alone. We need the support of all stakeholders including members of the media for us to achieve the objective of qualifying for the finals,” he said.

The Warriors gaffer emphasised that from the 28-member squad, he would trim it to the 22 best who he hopes to work with to secure victory against Congo Brazzaville. The Central Africans have troubled Zimbabwe in the past having come here way back in 1991 and forced a draw that denied the hosts a ticket to the finals.

“I think if you look at our squad, we have added two (foreign-based) players. I think for this game, we have enough time to train for the Congo Brazzaville match. Out of this 28-man squad we will pick the best 11 to start and I am sure we are allowed to put 11 substitutes on the bench, so it is going to be 11 best players on the pitch and 11 substitutes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zifa are involved in talks with Chidzambga over a new contract amid reports that his contract has since expired.

Kamambo, however, said the board had been seized with the matter and has been negotiating with the coach behind the scenes.

He said the matter would be finalised during the association’s board meeting at the weekend.

“It’s true it expired, but we have a board meeting on Saturday, part of our discussion is on the contract of the coach, as of now Sunday Chidzambga is the coach of the Warriors, there are negotiations that are being done at the moment. I am sure we will come up with a very attractive contract for him,” Kamambo said.

Warriors provisional squad:

Goalkeepers: George Chigova, Edmore Sibanda, Petros Mhari

Defenders: Marshal Munetsi, Jimmy Dzingai, Alec Mudimu, Teenage Hadebe, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Divine Lunga, Tendayi Darikwa, Godknows Murwira

Midfielders: Butholezwe Ncube, Marvelous Nakamba, Danny Phiri, Richard Hachiro, Ovidy Karuru, Tafadzwa Kutinyu, Khama Billiat, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Talent Chawapiwa, Kelvin Lunga, Leeroy Mavhunga

Strikers: Knowledge Musona, Tino Kadewere, Knox Mutizwa, Abbas Amidu, Evans Rusike, Admiral Muskwe

Blistering start for 2019 PSL

BY Kevin Mapasure

The 2019 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) programme is set for an explosive start with some tasty fixtures lined up in the first few weeks of this much-awaited edition.

With the league set to start at the end of the month, PSL yesterday released the fixture programme and the Highlanders, Caps United clash in week two has already got tongues wagging.

Bosso have a tough schedule where they will take on Black Rhinos (away), Caps United (home), Harare City (away) and Triangle (home) .

During the same period, Caps United will take on Manica Diamonds (home), Highlanders (away), Chapungu (home) and Black Rhinos (away), while Dynamos’ first four fixtures look quite favourable with a home match against league debutants Mushowani Stars before the away trip to Hwange. Their third instalment will be against Chicken Inn in Bulawayo, which comes before the home match against Herentals.

FC Platinum also have a tough line-up with matches against Harare City (away), Triangle (home), Mushowani Stars (away) and Hwange (home).

Ngezi Platinum Stars, under new coach Erol Akbay, start off with an away trip to Triangle, a home match against Mushowani, Hwange (away), before they take on Chicken Inn in a home match.

The team facing the worst possible start is Mushowani, who have Dynamos a home, Ngezi Platinum Stars (away), FC Platinum at home and Manica Diamonds (away) in their first four fixtures.

Dynamos and Highlanders will first meet on week 12, but before that DeMbare would have met champions FC Platinum in week 10.

It will be an interesting period in which DeMbare will clash with Ngezi Platinum (week nine), FC Platinum (week 10), Highlanders (week 12) and then Caps (week 15).

Dynamos were deserted by the majority of their players, but did a lot of shopping outside the country and are likely to parade about four foreigners from Cameroon, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Coach Lloyd Chigowe has insisted that despite their troubles, they will not be one of the weaklings of the league this term.

It is the Highlanders, Caps United clash that dominated talk yesterday with the Green Machine forward Gabriel Nyoni, who joined from Bosso expressing his anticipation for the tasty fixture on social media.

“How many likes for match day two? A quick return to Barbourfields. I wonder how the atmosphere will be like, getting into Barbourfields wearing another colour,” Nyoni tweeted.

Bosso also lost striker Newman Siyanchali to Caps United, which could form another interesting sub-plot to this tie.

Highlanders have also shopped well with the return of Prince Dube and Nqobizitha Masuku, while Bukhosi Sibanda also joined the club together with Cleopas Kapupurika.

Both Caps United and Highlanders have had their fair share of problems with both teams experiencing player strikes in the pre-season preparation period.

They will be hoping to have put every trouble to bed by then.

Chicken Inn, who have assembled a strong side have what looks like a difficult fixture list where they kick off with a home match against ZPC Kariba, before they play Yadah in an away match which precedes their home clash with Dynamos.

They will then confront Akbay’s Ngezi Platinum in their own backyard. This could be another fixture of particular interest with the likes of Donovan Bernard, Clive Agusto and Tichaona Chipunza returning to face their former paymasters.

Fixtures highlights

The first blockbuster fixture to feature Highlanders and Caps on week 2.

Dynamos to play Ngezi Platinum, FC Platinum, Highlanders and Caps in week nine, 10, 12 and 15.

Mushowani Stars with the worst possible facing Dynamos, Ngezi Platinum, FC Platinum and Manica Diamonds in the first four matches. First big Harare derby on week 15.

Local songbirds join hands

BY WINSTONE ANTONIO

SEVERAL local songbirds have closed ranks and combined their efforts in an album titled Woman of Essence to be released on Friday ahead of the official launch at the end of the month.

The musicians — Edith WeUtonga, Sandra Ndebele, Novuyo, Ammi Jamanda, Pauline Gundidza, Queen Ritanash, Whitney, Lioness, Sister Flame, Kessia Masona, Tendai Chimombe, Nasibo and Nonny — are drawn from seven music genres.

The musicians, according to WeUtonga, who is the album’s co-producer, are from different locations including Bulawayo, Harare, Gweru, Kariba and Chegutu to give the new offering a national appeal.

WeUtonga told NewsDay Life & Style that the project was meant to proclaim that female musicians were not cry-babies, but could harness the power of unity to make an impact in an industry where men controlled the levers of power.

“The objective of the album is to celebrate women and their achievements, encouraging women to be peace builders and highlighting the plight of women. The several reports on sexual harassment and abuse of women in the creative sector also motivated the women to come together for this project,” she said.

“As role models, mothers, teachers and children, the women come together in this diverse album to bring to attention various issues up for debate, address and solution seeking.”

WeUtonga said, while the project was predominantly female, they had also engaged the services of male producers from different record labels such as Tizzie and Skaiva, Maselo, Jdot, Gas and PropaBless to show the unity among artistes.

“This project is a true indication that shows female artistes could join hands for a better cause. This is certainly a yardstick to measure the artistry of the female breed of musicians, proving they have the requisite experience to do something great among themselves,” she said.

Some of the tracks to be featured on the album are Imbokodo, Dongo I Rise and Vakakosha.

Premiership football side Yadah Stars’ new coach Genesis Mangombe got his stint underway yesterday when he took the team through their paces for the first time.

Mangombe was confirmed as the club’s new coach last month after taking over from Thomas Ruzive, who moved to Black Rhinos as assistant to Herbert Maruwa.

The 35-year-old CAF A licence holder is a police officer by profession and delayed his pre-season since he was waiting for his clearance by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

Yadah chairman Everson Chatambudza told The Herald they received written permission from the police force last week to employ the youthful coach.

Bosso Battle Mutiny

Highlanders are battling hard to douse the fires that have engulfed their camp following a stand-off between players and management.

Bosso players have downed tools in their bid to force the club to expedite the payment of their January and February salaries, which are still outstanding.

The stand-off has affected the giants’ pre-season training in a big way, with just less than four weeks before the start of the season.

The players have vowed they will not go back to training until they get what they are owed.

In their quest to contain the situation, Bosso chairman Kenneth Mhlophe issued a statement assuring the players their welfare was being looked into.

“I would like to take this opportunity to inform Highlanders Football Club stakeholders that while the players have not received their salaries, we are committed to the welfare of our players.

“I empathise with our players and I would like to assure them that as per our engagement, all is in control. I am also pleading with our stakeholders, particularly the fans to remain calm.

“I have also noted with great concern how the situation has been blown out of proportion by some who insinuate that there is animosity between the executive and the players, yet the matter is being handled with maturity and mutual respect between both parties.

“The only purpose these innuendos serve is to cause chaos within Highlanders as they suggest that the club intends to victimise certain players for supposedly leading a’ strike’.

“All these are false allegations alien to the Highlanders culture.

“At Highlanders we solve problems through dialogue, not intimidation, so we shall continue engaging the players as we are working tirelessly to find their salaries within the shortest possible time.”

He said Bosso were a great football club with proper channels of communication.

“Highlanders are a great institution with a culture of communication. I urge all stakeholders to take note that the club communicates through its official channels, thus information coming through unknown and unverified sources should not be taken seriously,” he said.

“I plead for everyone’s patience as we look forward to this coming season and beyond to restore the club’s pride.

“Together with my colleagues, we hope to turn Highlanders into a successful club in all fronts.”

Meanwhile, Bosso announced the appointment of Jimmy Solumba Ncube as club patron.

Ncube served as the club president from 2016.

Bosso will lock horns with Chicken Inn in the Commander Zimbabwe National Army Challenge match at Barbourfields on Sunday.

ZNA public relations director Alfios Makotore confirmed the match and said they wanted to raise funds for the construction of Mbalabala Secondary School in Matebeleland South Province. Highlanders are the three-times ZNA Charities trophy winners and face a formidable Chicken Inn side who were on a tour to Blantyre, Malawi, in the past week.

“Winner of the tournament will pocket $10 000 as the runners-up will pocket $5 000, with gate charges pegged at $5 for the rest of ground and $10 00 for VIP.”

DEMBARE STRIKE DEAL

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
DYNAMOS chairman Isaiah Mupfurutsa described the unveiling of their $1 million sponsorship package by Gold Leaf Tobacco Zimbabwe as a momentous occasion which will help transform the bankrupt club.

The cigarette-manufacturing company, which has strong roots in South Africa, committed themselves to cushioning the giants for the next five years under their Rudland and George brand, as reported by The Herald earlier this week.

The deal will be renewed at the end of every season and could be reviewed upwards depending on the performance of the product on the market.

DeMbare, who have been struggling to pay their players following the expiry of their marriage with NetOne in December, received an initial chunk from the company last week to go towards the signing-on fees for new players and payment of salaries for January and February.

Their marriage with Gold Leaf Tobacco was formalised yesterday at a colourful event that was graced by their patron, Webster Shamu.

Gold Leaf Tobacco Zimbabwe were represented by one of their executives, Lovejoy Bamala and Hannah Rudland, who is the company’s marketing and sales manager.

With the financial challenges behind them, Mupfurutsa said the team, which is currently rebuilding under Lloyd Chigowe, will now exert all their energy towards reclaiming their place at the top of the domestic league.

DeMbare said they were still open to more partnerships, including NetOne, whom they are still negotiating with following the expiry of a $350 000 deal signed last year.

“We are confident Dynamos can reclaim its status as one of the best clubs on the continent. But to achieve that, Dynamos will need to reinvent itself and take a completely new trajectory.

“Today we are glad to announce that DeMbare have found a big partner to walk with in this new journey. A journey that we believe will take us back to the African safari in the not too distant future.

“Dynamos have not won the Premier Soccer League title since 2014. We have now gone for four seasons without laying our hands on that important silverware.

“The 2018 season was one season that we will want to quickly forget. You all saw what happened before a timely intervention from the executive helped change things.

“Our millions of supporters are not happy with that statistic. We all know DeMbare fans are demanding because they believe their team should always be up there with the best.

“They believe Dynamos should always be winning the championship and they should be forgiven for that belief because DeMbare are indeed a football giant that should always maintain its dominance in the top- flight league.

“Thankfully, I can safely tell you tonight that Dynamos have started walking along the path of recovery.’’

I can safely tell you Dynamos have found a wonderful partner keen to see glamour return at the Harare football giants. Gold Leaf Tobacco will provide Adidas kits for the Glamour Boys inscribed with their logo at the front and on the sleeve.

The company will also provide replicas for sale to the supporters to help the giants boost their revenue streams.

Gold Leaf Tobacco Zimbabwe representative Lovejoy Bamala challenged Dynamos to maintain high standards.

“Our partners Dynamos are a big brand and are at the heart of most Zimbabweans and when we were approached by the executive, led by Mr Mupfurutsa, about the financial challenges being experienced at the club, we thought of the sports fraternity as a whole and decided to take part in rescuing the club,’’ he said.

ICC SLAP IKOPE WITH 10-YEAR BAN FOR CORRUPTION

Sports Reporter
THE International Cricket Council have praised Zimbabwe Cricket and former Chevrons captain Graeme Cremer for their co-operation which led to the nailing of Enock Ikope, a former administrator of the domestic game, on charges of attempting to fix matches.

Ikope was handed a 10-year ban by the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal on Tuesday after he was also found guilty of attempting to erase information on his mobile phone which would have exposed him as a cheat.

He faced three counts of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.

Alex Marshall, the ICC General Manager, welcomed the decision.

“We welcome this decision and the substantial sanction imposed on Mr Ikope which reflects the gravity of the offences,’’ Marshall said in a statement.

“Non-cooperation and obstruction of our investigations by participants to the Code are simply not acceptable and I hope this and other recent sanctions sends out a clear message to anyone involved in the sport.

“Once again we must thank an international captain, Greame Cremer, for his absolute professionalism in recognising the initial approach by Mr (Rajan) Nayer, rejecting and then reporting it. We are thankful to him and to Zimbabwe Cricket for all the help during the investigations.’’

Ikope and Nayer, who is also serving a ban from the ICC, were fingered in an attempt to try and coerce Cremer to influence the Chevrons’ matches against the West Indies on behalf of some illegal Indian bookmakers.

“The Tribunal heard evidence that the ACU had established information during its investigation into the corrupt approach made by Mr Rajan Nayer to Zimbabwe cricket captain Graeme Cremer, which gave the ACU reasonable grounds to suspect that Mr Ikope may have engaged in corrupt conduct under the Code,’’ the ICC said in a statement.

“Mr Nayer, then treasurer and marketing director of the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association, was charged under the Code and banned from all cricket for 20 years.

“Mr Ikope was bound by the Code as a result of his affiliation to the HMCA as its chairman and to Zimbabwe Cricket as its (at the time) director. As such, he was required to cooperate fully with ACU investigations.

“Following a full hearing and presentation of written and oral argument, the Tribunal found Mr Ikope guilty of the following three offences under the Code:

Article 2.4.6 — Failure or refusal to cooperate with the ACU’s investigation by failing to provide accurately and completely the information and or documentation requested by the ACU in January 2018. This included refusing to hand over his mobile phone and documents demanded by the ACU.

Article 2.4.7 — Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code in January 2018. This included further failures and delays handing over his mobile phone and documents demanded by the ACU.

Article 2.4.7 — Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code in February 2018. This arose as a result of his deletion of data from his mobile phone before handing it over to the ACU.

“Mr Ikope was banned by the Tribunal for five years in respect of each breach. The Tribunal ordered the first two of the five-year periods of ineligibility to run concurrently, with the penalty for the third breach of Article 2.4.7 to run consecutively, resulting in a total ban of 10 years.’’ Ikope has denied the charges but the ICC were irked that he had shown no remorse for his actions.

Eonde Blow for FC Platinum

By Mehluli Sibanda
FC PLATINUM have been dealt a blow in their quest to finally find the target in the CAF Champions League group stage with striker Albert Eonde ruled out of their penultimate tie with Orlando Pirates on Friday. The Cameroonian will not feature after a bid to secure him a visa failed.

Eonde required a visa to travel to South Africa, which had to be obtained before he came down here, and with FC Platinum making frantic efforts to secure that for him without success yesterday, they had no choice but to leave him in Harare.

FC Platinum media liaison officer, Chido Chizondo, explained how they had started the process to secure a visa for Eonde but failed.

“That was very unfortunate, we have been made to understand that North Africa and West African countries are required to apply for their visa seven days before prior to them travelling,” she said.

“And this involves them going for an interview, it’s a very long process, so we did not manage to meet the deadlines for that particular process to bring Eonde to South Africa.” Chizondo disclosed they faced a challenge when FC Platinum travelled to Guinea to face Horoya last month.

FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza, had remained hopeful Eonde will be able to make the trip to South Africa. Now, he has to change his plans. Gift Mbweti and Charles Sibanda are not part of the squad which travelled here and Mapeza will have to hope for goals from the likes of Mkhokheli Dube, Thomas Chideu and Ali Sadiki. FC Platinum have not scored in the four Champions League group stage fixtures they have played so far. FC Platinum had a training session under floodlights at Greek Sports Club, just a stone’s throw away from their hotel. They take on Pirates on Friday.

Mhofu Doesn’t Have a Contract

By Robson Sharuko
For a man without a contract for the last three months, technically jobless, Sunday Chidzambwa’s riveting solo performance yesterday, which triggered a fiery battle cry whose vibrations must have been heard 3 000km away in Brazzaville, was vintage stuff.

If this had been a movie, he would possibly have received an Oscar, the power of his words capturing the undivided attention of his audience, including a hostile constituency which has questioned his suitability to lead the Warriors, as he took them on a fascinating adventure.

The setting was a Harare hotel room, the occasion was the announcement of the Warriors squad for the final 2019 AFCON qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville, the audience were the country’s football writers and commentators and, for a refreshing change by ZIFA, he was facing the media to defend his choices.

And, crucially, to also explain why other players had been left out.

Someone like goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, who is transforming himself into one of the fine goalminders in the South African Premiership, but didn’t make the squad.

Having explained why he left out Willard Katsande, without closing the door for him to be considered in future assignments, he passed the baton to his team manager Wellington Mpandare to explain the inclusion of midfielder Danny Phiri, just a week after his return from a long-term injury.

That he could even go that distance, to provide explanations about the inclusion of this and that player, and the omission of this and that footballer, was in itself a remarkable dedication to duty given his unique circumstances.

After all, Chidzambwa — the first gaffer to take the Warriors to the AFCON finals — does not have a binding contract with ZIFA with his official mandate having expired at the end of December last year.

ZIFA president Felton Kamambo, who attended the media conference yesterday in the company of his board member in charge of competitions, Chamu Chiwanza, confirmed Chidzambwa’s contract expired on December 31 last year, but said they had agreed, in principle, for him to continue in his job.

Kamambo revealed the ZIFA board meeting set for this Saturday in Harare would confirm the contract they have been negotiating with Chidzambwa and there was no question the coach would put pen to paper.

With the media conference staggering towards a close, and a lot of work having been covered by both sides, Chidzambwa then asked for one final address to the journalists to bring the curtain down on the proceedings.

He told his audience he wasn’t very fluent in English, and to ensure his message was not lost in the battle to find the right words in the Queen’s language to provide the right emphasis, he chose to make the address in Shona.

It was an address, like no other, which the media had heard from Chidzambwa with the coach pleading with them to come on board at this important national assignment to take the Warriors to the next AFCON finals in Egypt.

He spoke from his heart as he blasted the divisions, which continue to derail the progress of Zimbabwean football, when collectively the brand of the Warriors, in particular, and the game, in general, could be boosted and qualification for the next AFCON finals could be guaranteed.

He said he was not super human, telling the journalists he was just another ordinary Zimbabwean, a man who could make mistakes and now and again he also needed guidance because he did not have all the prescriptions to make the Warriors the best they could possibly be.

He asked for a helping hand, for constructive criticism, for information from the media of some players who were doing well and possibly deserved his attention.

He also spoke about the pain he has endured, reading in some newspapers and online platforms, that he was demanding illicit payments from players to pay him for them to be included for national duty.

He pleaded with the reporters not to abuse their privilege, where they had the advantage of reviewing things that would have happened, because there were those whose jobs were about dealing with the present, and the future, and not the past.

Then, he told us, he was 67 years old, a battered and bruised Warrior in the final leg of his journey in the trenches of coaching, and all he needed, at this stage, was the support to take his team to Egypt.

In those five minutes, Chidzambwa sounded like Al Pacino, in the legendary actor’s remarkable portrayal of Tony D’Amato, a 30-year veteran coach of the Miami Sharks, in the sports movie, “Any Given Sunday’,’ released exactly 20 years ago — the film about a once-dominant American football side struggling to find a way back to the good old days.

D’Amato’s job is made even tougher by his troubled relationship with the owner of the club, Christina Pagniacci, a role played by actress Cameron Diaz, injuries to his two starting quarterbacks and another star player who doesn’t believe in the values of teamwork.

Somehow, the Miami Sharks find a way to fight for honours again and, on the eve of their most important game, D’Amato provides his team with a motivational speech for the ages.

And, listening to Chidzambwa yesterday, he appeared to have borrowed notes from that speech:

“I don’t know what to say really, three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives (it) all comes down to today,” thundered D’Amato to his players. “Either we heal as a team or we are going to crumble.

“Inch by inch, play by play, till we’re finished. We are in hell right now, gentlemen believe me, and we can stay here and get the s**t kicked out of us or we can fight our way back into the light.

“We can climb out of hell, one inch, at a time. Now I can’t do it for you, I’m too old, I look around and I see these young faces and I think I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make – I p****d away all my money, believe it or not, I chased off anyone who has ever loved me.

“And lately, I can’t even stand the face I see in the mirror. You find out that life is just a game of inches, so is football because, in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small, I mean, one half step too late or to early you don’t quite make it.

“One half second too slow or too fast and you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They are in every break of the game, every minute, every second. “On this team, we fight for that inch, on this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch, we claw with our finger nails for that inch, because we know when we add up all those inches, that’s going to make the f*g difference between WINNING and LOSING, between LIVING and DYING.”

It was like listening to Mhofu yesterday and, given he doesn’t have a contract, that’s remarkable.

THE WARRIORS technical team led by coach Sunday Chidzambga has said the players omitted from the provisional squad to face Congo Brazzaville later this month can still force their way into contention for a place in the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) if Zimbabwe qualifies.

Chidzambga on Tuesday named his 28-man squad for the decisive clash set for the National Sports Stadium on March 24, where the Warriors need at least a draw to book a place at the finals this June in Egypt.

There was no space for goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, who is in sparkling form for his South African league side Baroka FC.

Instead, the veteran coach picked FC Platinum goal minder Petros Mhari together with George Chigova and Edmore Sibanda as his goalkeeping options.

Costa Nhamoinesu, Nyasha Mushekwi and former Warriors skipper Willard Katsande were other high-profile omissions from the squad.

All along, it had been touted that England-born stars Macauley Bonne and Adam Chicksen would be in line for selection in the latest squad as their papers are being processed, but the duo is once more on the outside looking in.

Warriors manager Wellington Mupandare said the door remained open to welcome new players.

“People should understand that this squad is for the Congo Brazzaville match, and as for the Afcon finals, if we qualify, everyone has a chance (to be selected),” he said.

“There are a lot of things that the technical team considers when picking a squad for a particular match or tournament, and the coach believes that this squad will do the immediate job. There will be changes obviously if we qualify. There could be injuries and dip in form for some players, so changes will be there.”

It is the omission of Nhamoinesu from the squad that has raised eyebrows though, with reports suggesting that Chidzambga has completely shut the door on the Czech Republic-based star.

The left-back, according to sources, is paying the heavy price for reportedly refusing to travel to South Africa with the rest of the team by road for the Cosafa Cup tournament last year.

A huge fan favourite in the Warriors set-up, the dreadlocked star pulled out of the squad to Polokwane on the eleventh hour, citing an injury.

It is alleged that Nhamoinesu, who had flown all the way from Europe for the tournament, only raised the injury card after he realised that the team was travelling by bus, something that reportedly riled Chidzambga and his technical bench.

He has not been called to the national team ever since, missing out on the team’s current Afcon campaign.

But Mupandare said the defender, who played for the Warriors at the Afcon finals in Gabon two years ago, could still have a future in the team.

“The last time I spoke with him, he had a shoulder injury, and he told me he has been playing under injections for his team,” he said.

“I understand he will have a surgery very soon, and that could possibly rule him out of contention for selection. The same with Nyasha, he is currently recovering from a surgery and we will keep tracking his recovery progress.”

Mhari delighted with Warriors call-up

BY TERRY MADYAUTA IN JOHANNESSBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

FC PLATINUM goalkeeper Petros Mhari says he is excited by the chance to be part of the Warriors in the crunch Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Congo Brazzaville on March 24.

Mhari, together with his teammate Godknows Murwira, were drafted in Sunday Chidzambga’s 28-man provisional squad announced early this week for the make-or-break match, where Zimbabwe needs at least a point to qualify for the Afcon finals.

The 31-year-old and 2016 goalkeeper of the year had been overlooked for national duty in recent times despite good displays for FC Platinum, where he is also the skipper of the team.

The steady goalie has had some impressive performances in the team’s Caf Champions League, and his brilliance had been overshadowed by his on-field peers who are struggling to score goals in the campaign.

Speaking to the NewsDay Sport in Johannesburg, South Africa, ahead of the team’s Caf Champions’ League group B encounter against Orlando Pirates, Mhari described his return to the Warriors fold as a dream come true.

Mhari was previously called to the national team by his current club coach Norman Mapeza.

“I am very happy for being recognised as a player and I hope this will also be another fruitful year for me. It’s every player’s wish to be given a chance to play for his country. I have been called up once and it was a good experience. Right now, the team is in need of a win to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. Therefore, I hope my contribution will be key in helping the team achieve this goal for the love of our country and the game,” he said.

Mhari will be fighting for the number one spot in the team with George Chigova and Edmore Sibanda.

“With the calibre of players that have been playing for the Warriors, I think nothing can stop us from qualifying for this tournament. My team has always been with me throughout this journey, and being selected comes as a group achievement. However I want to thank the coaches for selecting me and I hope to deliver the best for the country,” he said.

Turning to their clash against Orlando Pirates on Friday, Mhari vowed that while his team is out of contention for the ticket to the quarter-finals, they won’t donate points to the South African giants who desperately need to win to salvage their chances of proceeding to the knockout stage.

FC Platinum are yet to score a goal in the group stages, and Mhari sees this game as a chance to redeem themselves.

“We won’t go down without a fight. We need to at least win this game for our pride. We have been working very hard and I believe we are going to start yielding results soon,” he said.

DeMbare coach Chigowe calm

BY TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA

DYNAMOS coach George Chigowe has remained calm despite facing what looks on paper to be tough opening rounds of fixtures for the 2019 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season, which include a clash with a formidable Chicken Inn side in the third week of the campaign.

The 2019 PSL season kicks off on March 30.

The Harare football giants kick off the campaign with an away trip to Premiership newboys Mushowani Stars, but it gets tough when they host returnees Hwange in week two.

They then face a difficult hurdle in the form of Chicken Inn, who appear to be a menacing side, having been one of the busiest clubs on the transfer market.

Chigowe admitted it will be tough, but he is far from being fazed. “Our opening matches are quite competitive and we see every team as such. We don’t underestimate our opponents. Facing Chicken Inn or whoever, our approach will be the same. We will approach any of these teams like we are playing Al Ahly or TP Mazembe. We are looking forward to the challenge and to the start of the season,” he said.

The Joey Antipas-coached Chicken Inn raided Ngezi Platinum Stars of Clive Augusto, Tichoana Chipunza and goalkeeper Donovan Bernard.

They recently concluded the signing of Brett Amidu from FC Platinum, Dynamos’ trio of Valentine Kadonzvo, Panashe Mutasa and Phakamani Dube.

The Gamecocks have also signed Malvin Gaki and Sipho Ndlovu from Harare City and relegated Bulawayo City, respectively. Their coach Antipas is looking forward to a good season where he is targeting a league title.

“We are meeting Dynamos in the third week, but for us, it’s not about Dynamos. We treat the fixture against Dynamos like any other. Of course, we might have signed good players, but we have to work to get the team to gel,” he said.

“We have been on a very fruitful tour to Malawi, where we played against good opposition. Although we lost two matches and drew the other, it was a good dress rehearsal for the team ahead of the start of the season.”

The Bulawayo side played against Nyasa Big Bullets, under the tutelage of former Warriors and Dynamos’ coach Kalisto Pasuwa, BeForward Wonderers and Mozambican side Ferroviário de Nampula.

Dynamos are hoping to better their fortunes this year, following a poor campaign last year, where they spent most of the season fighting relegation.

To do that, they have rebuilt their squad, signing over 20 new players, including four foreigners.

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
HIGHLY-RATED midfielder Tanaka Chinyahara, who was a Dynamos target during pre-season, has resurfaced in South Africa where he signed for First Division side Witbank Spurs.

The diminutive midfielder told The Herald, from his new base in South Africa, that he had signed a two-and-a-half deal with the Mpumalanga-based outfit. Chinyahara will link up with national team goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda, who has been on the club’s books for the last two seasons.

“I am very happy with the move because what I want is to play football and help my club achieve great things.

“It’s also great that Edmore Sibanda is here. I have been training with the club and the technical team was impressed so I decided to sign so that I create opportunities for myself,” said Chinyahara.

The 23-year old signed for Denmark’s Hobro IK as teenager in 2015 and played only one season in the top-flight before he was loaned out to second-tier side Jammerbugt FC from 2016.

Chinyahara has also previously tried his luck with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The midfielder is a product of Bidvest Wits development, having relocated to South Africa at a tender age.

“That’s a star for the future. His agent sent him to us, he sent us his footage while he was still playing in Denmark,’’ Spurs chief executive, Freddy Mapulane, told Kick-Off.

“So, when his contract finished over there we invited him, and now he is here training with the team.

“Our aim is to survive relegation and plan for next season. So, Mr Mashaba, now is planning for next season, so he said “that’s my star player for next season.”

“We will register him now, once he gets his work permit he will play in the remaining games. He likes him in the defensive position but he can also play attacking midfielder.’’

DeMbare take on traditional rivals CAPS United in a charity match at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday in their first high-profile pre-season match. Dynamos coach Lloyd Chigowe believes the game is perfect to gauge the progress they have made.

Mhofu wanted Bonne

Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor
WARRIORS coach Sunday Chidzambwa has revealed he has been impressed by the qualities of Leyton Orient forward McCauley Bonne and was eager to have him in his squad for the final AFCON showdown against Congo-Brazzaville on March 24.

Bonne’s name was a notable absentee from the 28-man squad provisionally called up for the big encounter at the National Sports Stadium.

It emerged that Bonne’s handlers had delayed in submitting the players’ documents, which resulted in delays in his Zimbabwean passport being processed.

Chidzambwa said he had watched a number of videos of Bonne’s matches and liked what he saw.

“I was watching Bonne’s clips and he is a very good striker and he scores some very good goals,’’ said Chidzambwa.

“I would have loved to have him here. I think he can bring a different dimension but that is not to say we don’t have enough material.

“We have picked a squad which has cover for every position in the event that we might suffer some injuries before that match.’’

Bonne’s manager, Mathew Halford, also sent his apologies to the Warriors via a message to team manager Wellington Mpandare

“It is with deep regret and disappointment that we have been unable to source the correct documentation in order to secure Bonne’s Zimbabwe passport.

“This has been as a result of personal circumstances. However, Bonne has every intention of accumulating the required documentation in order to be available for selection as soon as possible.

“Bonne has dreamt to play for Zimbabwe and extend his goal scoring abilities in England to Zimbabwe. He sends his most sincere wishes for the squad in the pending qualifiers and looks forward to joining them in the near future,’’ said Halford.

Despite having to wait a little longer before having to call on Bonne’s services, Chidzambwa believes the Warriors have the pedigree to cross the finish line and book their place among the 24 nations that will line up in Egypt.

The Warriors just need to avoid defeat against the Red Devils to secure one of the two spots available from the group.

“It wasn’t an easy group at all, it was a very tough and I think we did very well in all our assignments, except maybe for the away game against Liberia.

“Now, we are playing at home and with the crowd behind us we should, at least, achieve our goal which is to qualify for the Nations Cup,’’ Chidzambwa said.

He also pleaded with the supporters to transform the National Sports Stadium into a hostile arena for the visitors on March 24.

“Our supporters should be patient with the players. We need to allow them to make some mistakes and correct them,’’ said Mhofu.

“It is not in every game that you get early goals and, therefore, the supporters just need to be patient.’’

The 67-year-old history-making coach also revealed he was not going to tinker much with the side for a game of this magnitude.

“A lot has been said about the squad and a lot of speculation has been made but we need to be very careful on the need for consistency.

“We may have one or two changes but the rest of the team that started this campaign, and which has been playing, needs to be kept intact.

“We just hope that injuries will, this time, not affect much of our plans,’’ Chidzambwa said.

Tapuwa Kapini rallies FC Platinum

Mehluli Sibanda in JOHANNESBURG, South Africa
FORMER Highlanders goalkeeper, Tapuwa Kapini, has backed FC Platinum to overcome Orlando Pirates in a Champions League group stage fixture tie at Orlando Stadium this evening.

Kapini, who is turning out for Highlands Park in the ABSA Premiership, feels there is no reason why his countrymen cannot topple Pirates.

“These boys, they have got hunger, they know what they want and I think if they perform very well, like they did in the first leg, they can come up with three points,’’ said Kapini. “All they need to do is to go out and play with confidence.

“If I look at the individual play of FC Platinum, they are a good side, and when it comes to the team collection as well, they are a good side and you know they have a good coach who played in the UEFA Champions League. “I think he knows what this game means to them so it’s all up to the players. “They mustn’t let Pirates come into the game, when Pirates come into the game, it’s not going to be easy for them.

“They must watch the midfield of Pirates, they are good, if you watch Thembinkosi Lorch, Musa Nyatama as well, they have been playing well and I think they will have a plan for them.

Katsande content with ommission

Mukudzei Chingwere Sports Reporter
FORMER Warriors captain Willard Katsande says coach, Sunday Chidzambwa, was right to overlook him for the crunch AFCON qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville on March 24 at the National Sports Stadium.

The 33-year-old Kaizer Chiefs midfielder said given the magnitude of the fixture, the veteran gaffer was justified to have overlooked certain players even if they were doing well at their clubs.

“This is a must-win game and we need to win the game at all cost to go to the AFCON finals, this is not the type of game we need to be making experiments,’’ he said.

“Of course, I would have loved to be part of the team but, honestly, I am on a rough patch at the moment and it is justified for the coach not to take any risks.

“Even if you look at Portugal, there was a time Cristiano Ronaldo was not part of the team when he was still settling at Juventus.

“No-one is bigger than the team and we all want the team to qualify, I am no longer a small boy we need to put the interest of the team first, if the team qualifiers that will be brilliant and I will be happy if I get a chance to play at the finals again.

“It is just one game to go and we cannot be making experiments, so those who have been called into camp can do the job very well.’’

The Europe-based duo of Kelvin Lunga and Admiral Muskwe have been drafted into the squad.

“We have a good side which I think has the capacity to get the desired result and take the team to the Nations Cup finals,’’ said Katsande.

“It is a balanced team, we have power and speed and that will help us to contain as well as to break the opponent when going forward.

“I am working very hard, as always, to be in the best shape and to retain top form, I think I am ready to do well for both my club and country.’’

Sports Reporter
MINISTER of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry yesterday said Government will leave no stone unturned in their preparations for the Africa Games after appointing seasoned administrator Eugenia Chidhakwa to be the chef de-mission for Team Zimbabwe.

Chidhakwa, who is a director in the Ministry of Sport, will be assisted by Martin Dururu from the Sports Commission on the technical side and Memory Pakati from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee from the administrative side.

The Games will take place this August in Morocco with more than 5 000 professional and amateur athletes competing in 27 sport codes.

The Games are run by Africa Union with the support of Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.

The Africa Games will also be used as a qualifying event for the 2020 Olympics.

AXIA records 68 percent profit

Michael Tome Business Reporter
RETAIL and distribution group, AXIA Corporation Limited posted a 68 percent jump in operating profit to $22,4 million for the six months up to December 2018 from $13,3 million in the comparative prior period.

The group’s revenue grew 74 percent with nearly a $100 million margin to $234,1 from $134,3 million recorded in 2017 as it also recorded a 65 percent growth on profit before tax to $22,8 million.

AXIA strong growth was driven by a mixed volume performance across operations as TV Sales and Home exhibited a robust first half of the financial year with a 35 percent increase in sold units compared to the prior period resulting in a 63 percent turnover growth.

Distribution Group Africa-Zimbabwe (AXIA subsidiary) posted a 91 percent growth in turnover and more than 100 percent in operating profit as Transerv recorded a four percent growth in revenue.

AXIA indicated that foreign exchange deficiencies coupled with the prevailing challenges in the economy hindered the smooth flow of business, but the company managed to come up with remarkable results. The period under review was generally faced with difficult trading conditions. The challenges faced in the economic environment were characterised by constraints in the supply of some local products and foreign currency constraints.

“Despite these factors the group’s business units were resilient and this helped the group register a good performance, characterised by constraints in the supply of some local products and foreign currency constraints,” said AXIA.

AXIA continues to grow its network as seen by recent opening of TV Sales and Home outlets in Masvingo and Banket.

The group also acquired a 49 percent shareholding stake worth USD$2,5 million in Maton (Pvt) limited Restapedic a bedding manufacturing business.
