Zim player caught off-side in Namibia

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
AT a time when Namibian football is at the crossroads, chaos has engulfed their top-flight league with an unheralded Zimbabwean player at the centre of a controversy that led to the expulsion of Premiership club Young Africans FC at the weekend.

Tapiwa Simon Musekiwa is accused of colluding with senior officials at the club to facilitate his registration with the newboys last season using a Zimbabwean passport that was “tampered” with.

For the whole of the 2017-2018 season, Musekiwa used a false identity after he was registered as Albert Mujikirera.

Young Africans finished fifth in their debut season.

However, the ill-advised move backfired terribly last week when the Namibia Premier League’s Disciplinary Committee decided to kick the club out of the competition because of the seriousness of the offence. According to The Namibian newspaper, the league’s Disciplinary Committee found Young Africans guilty on two counts of fraud, both counts related to the use and registration of the player under a false identity, which the league’s judicial arm felt was intentional and pre-planned.

The player admitted falsifying his identity in an affidavit with the Namibian Police dated October 9, 2018, where he claimed he was coerced into doing so by an unnamed individual who facilitated his registration.

“I used this name due to the fact that the person registering told me to do so. My passport was not available, as I was only using an emergency travelling document.

“I hereby declare that I am Tapiwa Simon Musekiwa, born on the 13th of February 1992, in Kwekwe Zimbabwe. I want to use my original name and documents,” said Musekiwa.

The player is on the books of African Stars, a team he joined at the beginning of this season. Musekiwa is not known back home since he has never played professional football in Zimbabwe.

Interestingly, he was cleared by ZIFA in 2016 after the club requested his International Transfer Certificate.

The judgment to expel Young Africans, which was delivered with only nine games played, has thrown the entire league into disarray.

The club, however, has since appealed the decision and they gave the Namibia Premier League until yesterday to reinstate them.

The alleged fraud came to light when one of their rivals Young Chiefs, who were relegated at the end of last season, submitted a complaint with the NPL.

In their damning dossier to the NPL, Chiefs detailed how “the player and his team” colluded to register him with a passport of which the “photo does not belong to the person whose details appear on the passport.”

Young Africans have played seven games this season but all their results have now been nullified.

Their relegation will also have an impact on the Standard Bank Top Eight competition due to start next weekend as a new team will have to take their place.

The FIFA Appeals Committee have reduced the two-year ban imposed CAF executive committee member and Zambia great Kalusha Bwalya.

The former African Footballer Player of the Year award winner will now only serve the time he was away from the game since his banishment and is now free to return to the sport’s administration.

“The FIFA Appeal Committee has partially upheld the appeal lodged by Mr Kalusha Bwalya, the former President of the Football Association of Zambia and member of the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football, and reduced the sanction previously imposed by the adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee in its decision dated 12 April 2018,’’ a statement read.

“After analysing and taking into consideration all the circumstances of the case, the FIFA Appeal Committee decided to reduce the duration of the ban from taking part in any football-related activity imposed on Mr Bwalya to the period already served at the time of the notification of the present decision. As a consequence, the ban imposed on Mr Bwalya ended upon notification of the decision of the FIFA Appeal Committee. Furthermore, a fine of CHF 10,000 has been imposed on Mr Bwalya.’

Cosafa Back to Infantino

By Petros Kausiyo Deputy Sports Editor

SOUTHERN African countries have thrown their full weight behind FIFA president Gianni Infantino with COSAFA this weekend reaffirming as a bloc their support for the Swiss lawyer’s bid for a fresh mandate to lead the world soccer governing body.

In a move initiated by COSAFA president Philip Chiyangwa, the 14-member body, African football’s biggest regional bloc, unanimously voted to back Infantino’s candidacy once again.

It emerged that Chiyangwa proposed at their annual meeting in Johannesburg on Saturday that COSAFA should speak with one voice and unequivocally on the need to support Infantino and leaders of the various associations responded positively to the call by voting unanimously on the resolution.

Chiyangwa, speaking from Johannesburg yesterday, said it was imperative that his region supported Infantino and give him another mandate to complete the development legacy that he was building on the continent and around the world for which COSAFA was one of the beneficiaries.

“For the period that Infantino has been in power he has not only spearheaded development of the game, he has also brought about unity.

“There is much more money that is coming from FIFA into the coffers of the organisations like COSAFA and direct into the associations for growth and development and we have witnessed a lot of that during his time.

“We believe we are poised for more growth and that is why it is important to support him and I am happy that the entire COSAFA has also seen it fit to throw our weight behind him,” Chiyangwa said.

The COSAFA president also revealed that the regional body had officially awarded the hosting rights of this year’s Senior men’s Cup to Zimbabwe.

ZIFA, through their board had last year bid to host the COSAFA Cup but that proposal was subject to the COSAFA Congress, the Zimbabwe Government and the association’s new leadership giving their thumbs up.

Government, through the Sport and Recreation Commission, tentatively gave their nod to Zimbabwe staging the tournament, set to be the biggest ever, from May 19-June 1 and now need to officially give their written guarantee.

On Saturday, the COSAFA Congress also officially awarded this year’s competition to Zimbabwe.

Interestingly, Zimbabwe’s Warriors will go into this year’s campaign as defending champions with history-making coach Sunday Chidzambwa seeking an unprecedented three successive COSAFA Cup titles having guided his side to wins in 2017 and 2018 in Rustenburg and Polokwane.

COSAFA are now awaiting the Government’s letter of confirmation to guaranteeing certain aspects such as security and accommodation related to the hosting of such a big competition.

Crucially for the regional body which is not only the biggest in zone and in size but the most active on the continent having annually organised competitions for the women, men’s senior and Under-20 and boys’ Under-17 tournaments, is the bid to cement their relations with FIFA under Infantino’s leadership.

After their meeting COSAFA also confirmed the backing of Infantino via a press release on their website.

“The 14 member associations of COSAFA have reaffirmed their support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting in Johannesburg on Saturday.

“Infantino received the unanimous backing of the Southern African region as he seeks re-election as head of the global governing body later this year.

“The move is in line with a similar stance taken last year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who endorsed the presidency of Infantino,” read the COSAFA website.

Infantino had earlier declared his readiness to continue leading FIFA.

“I want another four years of it because I believe in what I do,” Infantino said at FIFA’s Congress in Moscow last year.

“I believe in what I can do for FIFA and for football.”

FIFA on their part have also invested heavily in the COSAFA region and released $1 million which was used for the successful organisation of the four tournaments that Chiyangwa leadership staged for the region last year.

In a major step forward for the development of football in Africa, FIFA announced the official opening of its second regional development office on the African continent following the official inauguration of a new office in Johannesburg in November last year.

In line with FIFA 2.0 <https://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/02/84/35/01/FIFA_2.0_Vision_LOW_neu.17102016_Neutral.pdf> and its ongoing commitment to promoting and growing football around the world, the new regional development office in Johannesburg is providing dedicated assistance and support to member associations in the successful delivery of the FIFA Forward programme in Africa.

It was inaugurated during a special ceremony attended by member associations from across Africa.

The FIFA regional development office in Johannesburg is staffed by a dedicated and experienced team of full-time development officers that work closely with 14 member associations from the COSAFA region.

FIFA also noted that:

“As the second fully operational FIFA regional development office in Africa, Johannesburg is a key addition to FIFA’s international network of regional development offices. This new office is providing day-to-day and local support in the COSAFA region as FIFA aims to work ever more closely alongside our member associations in our shared commitment to develop football globally.

“The FIFA Forward development programme is the flagship of our president, Gianni Infantino. FIFA Forward is already having a real and lasting impact in growing the game and ensuring that it is more accessible and inclusive to all than ever before. By 2022, FIFA will have invested almost USD3 billion in football development globally through the FIFA Forward programme.”

“This new office forms part of our expanding global network of regional development offices and is one of three dedicated regional development offices located across Africa. Each regional office is providing hands-on local support to help develop and inspire a new generation of footballing talent.”

Darikwa’s UK Crusade

AFTER warming up to the demands of playing for the Warriors, Nottingham Forest defender Tendayi Darikwa has set about on a crusade to help lure more of the United Kingdom-based players to feature for Zimbabwe in the international game.

Darikwa is one of the famed “British Brigade” who has already made his debut for the Warriors and helped them achieve a rare victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in a 2019 African Cup of Nations showdown in Kinshasa.

The 27-year-old defender then made his home debut as the Warriors fought a 1-1 draw against the Congolese at the National Sports Stadium, which ensured that Sunday Chidzambwa’s men remained top of Group G.

In just those 180 minutes of action for the Warriors, Darikwa had also done enough to charm the Zimbabwean fans who nicknamed him “Minister of Defence” for the industry he showed after being tasked by Chidzambwa to man the right back channel.

Darikwa is one of two members of the Brithish Brigade together with Wales-based Alec Mudimu to have had their passports sorted out and have already made themselves available for the Warriors duties.

The defender, however, told The Herald in London that he had taken it upon himself to also talk to some of his colleagues who were born to Zimbabwean parents but are based in the Diaspora, to return home and play for the Warriors.

“Speaking to players who can play for Zimbabwe is something I am trying to do. I am trying to get more players based here in England who are able to represent their country. Hopefully, they will come over and play, but obviously it is their decision. It is up to them because it is their career,” he said.

The long list of Diaspora-based players with the potential to play for Zimbabwe includes Reading’s Andy Rinomhota, McCauley Bonne (Leyton Orient), Kundai Benyu (Celtic), Joshua Jeche (Cambridge United), Adam Chicksen (Bradford City), Tristan Nydam (St John FC) and German-based striker Kelvin Lunga.

Warriors team manager Wellington Mpandare has also been working tirelessly to assist the players to have their documents in order amid an open door that has been extended by Chidzambwa who wants Zimbabwe to harness all the best talent they can get.

Darikwa, who missed Zimbabwe’s last African Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia due to suspension, revealed his eagerness to return to the Warriors for their swim or sink Nations Cup qualifier against Congo Brazzaville at the National Sports Stadium on March 24.

“I think our chances to qualify for AFCON are very good. Obviously we still have a job to do against Congo Brazzaville. It will be a tough game but we will have to win and qualify for the tournament.

“I am in contact with the Zimbabwe technical team. It is important for me to know the football system there, but I am just looking forward to the game in March now. Hopefully, we will get a result and qualify for the AFCON finals in June”.

Darikwa also revealed his appreciation of the welcome he received from the Zimbabwe football fans.

“When I came for the games at the international break, it was good to see the “Minister of Defence” sing in the crowd. I am sure it was a bit of fun for the fans, but it is nice to have the fans appreciate me and the work that I do for the team,” he said.

Darikwa, who was born in England but qualified to play for Zimbabwe through his father, also spoke of the progress he has made in learning Shona.

“My Shona is something that I am working on with my dad, but it has not been easy. At 27, it is difficult to learn a new language, but it is something that I am determined to do and hopefully in future I will be speaking more Shona in my (future) interviews,” he said.

Asked about his role model in Zimbabwean football, Darikwa pointed to the legendary Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari.

“Peter Ndlovu. When I was very young, he was a very good player for the national team. He had a very good career in England as well.

“But Benjani was the main one for me in my life time growing up here in England. He had a very successful career and scored a lot of goals for the clubs he played for so probably Benjani.”

Darikwa is also looking forward to a successful club career under new manager Martin O’Neil.

O’Neil, a Nottingham Forest legend who won two European Cups with the club in the 1970s, replaced Spanish coach Aitor Karanka two weeks ago.

The Irishman picked up his first win following last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

This came after a 0-1 humbling at the hands of Bristol City in his first match as the club’s new manager.

However, Darikwa is still to play under the new manager having missed both matches through suspension following his red card in the 2-0 loss to Reading in caretaker coach Simon Ireland’s last game on January 12.

A regular under Karanka, Darikwa believes that he will greatly benefit from O Neil’s experience.

“I played a lot of games under the previous manager. That was good for me. Now he is gone and Martin O’Neil has come in. Hopefully, I can do the same under him. He is a Forest legend and I am sure he will do well for us and get us up the league as quickly as possible.”

He added that he is generally happy with his performance this season, but believes that his team, which moved ninth place following Saturday’s victory, could have performed better.

“My season so far has been ok. I have played a lot of games this season. So from my personal point of view, I am happy. I enjoy playing games so that’s good. For the team, we are a bit disappointed with our position in the league. But we still have a lot of games to play and a lot of points to play for. Hopefully, we can improve,” said Darikwa.

Horoya Declare War On Platinum

HOROYA AC of Guinea say they are serious about turning around their fortunes in the CAF Champions League competition after arriving seven days before their Group B clash against local champions FC Platinum.

The 16-time Guinean champions, who are still smarting from a 0-3 drubbing by Orlando Pirates of South Africa which condemned them to the bottom of the group, will clash with the platinum miners at Barbourfields on Saturday.

They left their base last Friday and touched down in Zimbabwe in the early hours of Saturday with 22 players after a long flight that took them via Cote d’Ivoire, Addis Ababa and South Africa.

They had their first training session yesterday at the National Sports Stadium’s B Arena under the watchful eyes of their veteran French coach Patrice Neveu.

Horoya AC managing director Amadou Bangoura, who is leading the delegation, said they had to come early since they want nothing short of maximum points to revive their campaign. Bangoura also said they could not take chances by travelling late since flights from the West African nation to this part of the world usually take awkward routes.

“The reason we are here is simple, we come from Guinea which is too far from Zimbabwe. So if we want to be efficient we must come early to prepare for our match set for next Saturday.

That is the only reason we are here and we thank the Zimbabwe federation (ZIFA) for facilitating our preparations.

“This is the biggest and most important match for all of us at HAC. That’s why we are here, being early to prepare for that,” said Bangoura. Horoya, who were quarter-finalists in the last edition of the tournament, have had a poor start in this year’s group stage campaign after drawing at home with holders Esperance of Tunisia and then losing by a bigger margin away to Orlando Pirates in Johannesburg.

Ahead of the trip to Zimbabwe, the team was boosted by the return of their Senegalese goalkeeper Khadim Ndiaye from injury while Guinean international Samuel Conte also came in to bolster the squad as they seek to recover from the thumping by Pirates.

According to the club’s website, the duo of Daouda Camara and Germain Berthe missed the trip due to injuries. The visitors will have about a week to finalise their preparations and acclimatise to the conditions in Zimbabwe.

“I must be honest I didn’t know very well about Zimbabwean football. But what I know is that FC Platinum are now one of the big teams in Zimbabwe and have won two championships. So we are pleased to play with them. I wish the best team to win,” said Bangoura.

Their coach Neveu, who has vast experience having coached a number of national teams and top clubs on the continent, is aware of the task in his hands and would want his side to rediscover their winning form following a 1-1 draw in their domestic league against Coyah Olympic Club last week.

Both Horoya and FC Platinum are still winless with each having a point but Horoya AC anchor Group B because of inferior goal difference. Pirates lead Group B with four points and they are at par with holders Esperance ahead of the back to back group fixtures.

“I think, apart from Esperance who are the favourites of the group, all the other three teams have good chances of progressing. So I feel the team that believes very well in its capabilities will take the other place.

“We are professionals. We have been travelling and playing football in most parts of Africa for a long time. The last time we played in South Africa. We are pleased to be here, we are very happy to play here and we will do our best.

“We respect our opponents FC Platinum very much but for us these three points are fundamental. I don’t even think we have to go back home without these three points,” said Bangoura.

FC Platinum are playing in the group stage for the first time and they have started slowly after drawing 0-0 at home against Pirates before slumping to a 0-2 defeat to Esperance in Tunis.

Norman Mapeza’s men, who are the only side in the group currently on off-season, were completely outplayed by their hosts who could have won by a bigger margin last Friday in Tunis. They need to get their campaign back on track in the back-to-back clashes with Horoya AC. FC Platinum have to collect maximum points at home to stay in contention for the ticket to advance to the quarter-finals of the continent’s premier club competition.

But they are yet to score a goal in the group stage matches so far as Mapeza is still to find the best striking combination since the departure of Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year Rodwell Chinyengetere.

The platinum miners will be without defender Elvis Moyo, who is on suspension.

Horoya AC squad:

Goalkeepers: Khadim Ndiaye, Abdoulaye Kante, Moussa Camara

Defenders: Godfred Assante, Marius Hamed Assoko, Boubacar Samasekou, Yakubu Hubu, Mohamed Lamine Fofana, Alseny Camara, Samuel Conte, Abu Mangue Camara

Midfielders: Baffour Sebe, Abdoulaye Camara, Dramane Nikiema, Brefo Mensah, Boniface Haba, Mohamed Djibo Wonkoye, Naby Soumah

Strikers: Patrick Razak, Ocansey Mandela, Sékou Keita, Siméon Bolaji

NATIONAL Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director for coaching, talent identification and development Lisimati Phakamile has expressed disappointment after most athletes missed the National Track and Field Championships at White City Stadium, in Bulawayo on Saturday.

The national coaching department had hoped to identify athletes for upcoming major competitions.

Phakamile said there were a few good results posted but their major concern was the failure by most athletes to attend which affected their selection process.

“The competition was attended by mostly Southern Region clubs and schools maybe owing to the current transport costs and other factors.

“We had a few good results from both track and field events with notably a 2.05m jump by Mathew Msamanyada in the senior men high jump and Sipho Moyo of Ihlosi club sprinting 48.72seconds in the senior men 400m. “Prissy Mpofu leaped 5.58m to win the junior women long jump event and Raymond Ngavi of Victoria Falls Mosi Striders clocking 10.62 seconds in 100m.

“Other than these few notable events it was not as good as we expected. If compared to last season very few athletes attended and this disturbed our process to select and identify athletes for the major events.

“We hope that clubs will pull resources together and try to make it to the next meet to gauge and attempt to qualify,” said Phakamile.

The athletics mother body are seeking to field teams at the Confederation of African Athletics Under-18 and Under-20 Championships in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in April. They have the World Championships to be staged in Doha, Qatar between September and October. Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman Manuel Mpofu, said there were some improvements in the middle and long distance events.

Edmore Chirambadare in Limbo

ZIMBABWE champions FC Platinum are waiting anxiously for the services of former Kaizer Chiefs forward Edmore Chirambadare following delays in his clearance by former South African lower division club Maccabi FC.

The former Amakhosi man arrived in Zvishavane amid high expectations given the platinum miners” poor performances in front of goal.

However, his debut has been delayed following holdup of his clearance by his former employers. As a result coach Norman Mapeza was forced to start the Champions’ League group stages without the services of the speedy forward.

In his absence Mkokheli Dube has been tasked with leading the attack but there are other options such as Lameck Nhamo and Cameroonian Albert Eonde at the coach’s disposal.

Chirambadare travelled to South Africa on Thursday to help expedite his clearance for him to be available for selection for the miners’ next game against Horoya AC on Saturday.

Club’s spokesperson Chido Chizondo yesterday confirmed the developments saying they are waiting for feedback from South Africa.

“Yes he is in South Africa and we will have more clarity (regarding his availability for the Horoya game) and shed further information,” she said.

The Zimbabweans are the only team in their pool yet to score a single goal after two rounds of matches and the arrival of the former Chicken Inn forward is likely to add bite in the final third.

FC Platinum play the champions of Guinea in Bulawayo on Saturday and will be desperate to collect full points to re-ignite any chances of progressing beyond the mini league stages.

Chelsea to face Man U

LONDON. — Holders Chelsea will host Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup in a repeat of last season’s final.

Sky Bet Championship Middlesbrough or League Two side Newport County will host Pep Guardiola’s quadruple-chasing Manchester City, while League One Doncaster will welcome Crystal Palace to the Keepmoat Stadium.

AFC Wimbledon’s reward for beating West Ham is a home tie with Millwall, who also shocked Premier League opposition in Everton on Saturday, with Frank Lampard’s Derby travelling to either Brighton or West Brom.

Bristol City will host either Shrewsbury or Wolves, while Swansea are at home to Barnet or Brentford and the winner of the replay between Portsmouth and QPR will welcome Watford.

The draw means in the space of five weeks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will play Paris Saint-Germain twice in the Champions League, Liverpool (H), Arsenal (A) and Manchester City (H) in the Premier League, along with the FA Cup tie at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea beat United 1-0 thanks to Eden Hazard’s penalty in last season’s final, while the two teams played out a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League in October.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer says trophies are more important for Manchester United than a top-four finish as he targets success in two cup competitions over the second half of the season.

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino, still in the frame to become United’s eventual long-term manager, has claimed a top-four finish and Champions League football is his club’s primary target and not silverware.

But Solskjaer, who won many trophies at Old Trafford as a player under Alex Ferguson, has other aims.

FA Cup Fifth Round Full draw

Bristol City v Shrewsbury/Wolves

AFC Wimbledon v Millwall

Doncaster v Crystal Palace

Middlesbrough/Newport v Manchester City

Chelsea v Manchester United

Swansea v Barnet/Brentford

Portsmouth/QPR v Watford

Brighton/West Brom v Derby

The fifth-round ties will take place between February 15-18.

The Day King Peter Exploded

By Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
THE first was a fine header and the second, a penalty converted with ease, thrust him into an elite company of goal-scorers after a remarkable match which came within just one goal of matching the then 41-year record for the most goals scored in a single AFCON finals game.

Along the way he joined Frederick Kanoute of Mali, then playing for English Premiership giants Tottenham Hotspur, and Cameroon’s Patrick Mboma, considered one of the finest African forwards of all-time, among the joint top-scorers with three goals, in the first two matches, of the 2004 Nations Cup finals.

And, in scoring his memorable brace in that showdown in the Tunisian southern coastal city of Sfax, on January 29, 2004, Peter Ndlovu became the FIRST player to finally find a way to score TWICE against the Indomitable Lions in a Nations Cup game in SIX years. Today marks exactly 15 years since that day, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, when the immortal Ndlovu produced a vintage individual performance, consistent with his leadership role for the Warriors, in which he pushed the continent’s most formidable defensive unit to its limits.

Sadly, it also marked the end of a golden era — the last time the inspirational Ndlovu, the first skipper to lead his Warriors to the AFCON finals, would also score his final goal at the continent’s biggest football festival.

But, for one hour 17 minutes, the time it took him to score his three goals at that AFCON finals, fittingly against the two most successful nations in the tournament’s history (Egypt and Cameroon), the fairytale romance was refreshingly beautiful while it lasted. King Peter didn’t get his hattrick – to join the likes of Mboma, Benny McCarthy, Kalusha Bwalya, Joel Tiehi, Barnard Chanda, Laurent Pokou, Hacene Lalmas, Hossam Hassan, Hassan El Shazly,Mohmoud El Gohary and Ad Diba who have done that at the AFCON finals – but, for a rookie forward at this tournament, this was as good as it gets.

The Warriors might have lost that match 3-5 but the way they battled, long and hard, against the Indomitable Lions who had won the last two AFCON tournaments, was roundly praised by many of the game’s seasoned analysts.

That eight-goal thriller in Sfax came within just one goal of matching the game which held the record of the most goals scored in an AFCON final, the nine shared by Egypt and Nigeria, with the Pharaohs winning that encounter 6-3 in 1963.

It also marked the first time the Indomitable Lions conceded more than two goals, in an AFCON match – either a qualifier or at the finals – in eight years with the last time having come on January 24, 1996, in Durban in a 3-3 draw against Angola at the ’96 Nations Cup finals.

Joni, Paulao and Quinzinho scored for the Negras Palancas that afternoon while Francois Omam-Biyik – the hero of the Indomitable Lions’ shock 1-0 win over then defending World Champions Argentina at Italia”90 – Georges Mouyene-Elong and a late own goal by Helder Vicente meant the spoils were shared.

Maybe, the Warriors had long perfected the art of scoring a lot of goals against these Indomitable Lions, with a ’96 AFCON qualifier at the National Sports Stadium on January 22, ’95, having ended in a crushing 4-1 victory for Zimbabwe.

Vitalis Takawira scored a hattrick that day while the late Paul Gundani completed the rout as the Warriors, who were still unhappy with the controversial way their winner-take-all ’94 World Cup qualifier in Yaounde had been decided two years earlier, appeared on a mission to inflict as much damage as possible on these Indomitable Lions.

However, the withdrawal of Lesotho and Swaziland and the outbreak of Ebola in the DRC all worked against the Warriors in that qualifying campaign and Cameroon recovered from that bashing in Harare to top the group and make it to the ’96 AFCON finals in South Africa.

Cameroon might have suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Ghana on October 4, ’98, in the qualifiers of the 2000 AFCON finals but the result of that game was nullified after CAF switched the tournament from Zimbabwe to Ghana and Nigeria.

And, for six years, until they came face-to-face with Ndlovu and his Warriors in Sfax on January 29, 2004, the Indomitable Lions played 25 AFCON matches and, the most they had conceded in a match, were two goals against Gabon, Nigeria and Guinea. Along the way they had faced some of the continent’s best forwards, Nwanko Kanu, Raphael Chukwu, Julius Aghahowa, Tijani Babangida, Finidi George, El Hadji Diouf, Henri Camara, Khalilou Fadiga, Papa Bouba Diop and some of the best midfielders, Jay Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh, but they had not conceded more than two goals a match in an AFCON game.

The Indomitable Lions defence was built around Bill Tchato, Pierre Wome, Rigobert Song, Raymond Kala, Lauren and tough midfield shields like Geremi and Marc Vivien-Foe.

The Cameroonians won 15 of those AFCON games, drew nine and lost only one. However, on January 29, 2005, they met a Warriors team that proved they could concede more than two goals, in an AFCON game, with Zimbabwe scoring three times that day while Peter Ndlovu became the first player, wince Souleymane Oulare of Guinea on February 8, 1998, to score twice against the Indomitable Lions in an AFCON game.

Oulare won the Belgian Footballer of the Year in 1999 after a starring role at Genk, where he scored 17 goals, but a life-threatening blood clot in his lungs detected after signing for English side Stoke City heralded the beginning of the end of his career.

Cloud Fusire Sports Reporter
ZPC Kariba have reshuffled their management, with club spokesperson Fadzai Chisveto taking over as the new chairperson.

Chisveto, who also retained her position as the club’s spokesperson, replaced embattled Tungamirai Mazarire who had been involved in a long battle with stakeholders and supporters.

The club’s supporters have been calling for the removal of the executive for some time now.

The club’s board have responded by naming Chisveto as the new chairperson while retaining secretary-general Robert Mamvura and treasurer Gwinyai Dzorani.

“We have made some few changes to the club executive as required by the constitution that we should appoint or re-appoint the executive after every three years.

“Our current spokesperson, Fadzai Chisveto, has been appointed the new executive chairperson of ZPC Kariba.

“Mr Mamvura has been re-appointed the secretary-general and Mr Dzorani has also been re-appointed as the treasurer of the club,” said a club official.

Chisveto was not keen to discuss the developments.

“We have made some changes in our club executive. The chairman’s contract was not renewed as he has some pressing company commitments and we have retained some members from the last executive to help in building our club.

“We would want to assure our stakeholders and supporters that we will be holding elections for the remaining posts in the coming weeks and surely before the season begins.

“We would want to urge supporters to give us and, most importantly, the coach (Godfrey Tamirepi) another opportunity to prove himself in the forthcoming season,” said Chisveto.

The Herald also understands that club board chairman Robson Chikuri has resigned to focus on company commitments and has been replaced by Kenneth Maswera.

Sianchali eyes CAPS success

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
NOT many CAPS United supporters might know Newman Sianchali, but the veteran forward has vowed to express himself on the pitch by fighting for the Golden Boot this season.

The 32-year-old former Hwange and Highlanders forward joined Makepekepe recently together with his ex-Bosso teammate Gabriel Nyoni.

Sianchali, who also had stints with Bulawayo City and Bantu Rovers, was joint top-goal scorer at Bosso last season with Nyoni after scoring six goals apiece.

CAPS hopes he will be able to combine well with Nyoni in the coming season to complement John Zhuwawu.

“I think I made a good decision considering what is happening at the club. I think CAPS United are doing things professionally,’’ said Sianchali.

“The way they are doing things is different and I am just ready for the challenge. I am looking forward to something better compared to how I played last year.

“Like any other player, I want to play my part in the team. I also want to make a big name, make it to the calendar, take the Golden Boot and then probably play Champions League with the team.’’

The former Bosso duo of Sianchali and Nyoni are coming in to fill the void left by Nigerian Abasirim Chidiebere and Michelle Katsvairo.

The Green Machine have also parted ways with Wisdom Mutasa, Dennis Dauda, Milton Ncube, Thabani Goredema, Cabby Kamhapa, Stephen Makatuka, Carlton Munzabwa, Thabani Goredema and Peter Moyo.

Makepekepe have since roped in youthful players like Clive Rupiya, Blessing Sarupinda and Pride Zivengwa.

Pacy winger Phineas Bhamusi and Ronald Chitiyo are also returning this season.

However, Chitiyo and gritty midfielder Dominic Mukandi, yesterday could not train with the rest of the team.

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe said Chitiyo, who is recovering from a knee injury he sustained in a car accident last year, might miss the first two weeks of the season. Mukandi is also battling a knee injury.

“Chitiyo has been participating in our training sessions. It’s unfortunate today (yesterday) he is not around because he went for his routine rehabilitation programme.

“We have about two months before the start of the new season and I am sure by that time, I think two or three weeks into the season, he will be fully fit.

“Dominic is a very important player for us but, currently, he has a problem with his knee. We expect him back after two weeks, according to the medical report I got from the doctor,” said Chitembwe.

The coach said his new signings are fitting in well.

Nyoni, a CAPS United juniors product, also believes Makepekepe are poised for bigger things this year.

“I have been welcomed well. I was here as a junior so I am glad to be back home. It was a really big decision so I had to consider a lot of things but the main thing was that I really needed to come back home.

“Mr (Farai) Jere and the executive made it clear we need the league this year and so everyone is putting in maximum effort to make sure we achieve that.

“It is very realistic, considering the amount of work we are putting in and the kind of players we have.

“Bhamusi is back, Chitiyo is working on his recovery, myself, Sianchali and Mwanjali we have lots of experience.

“I want to score more goals. Last year I scored six and assisted eight so this year I want to score more goals for CAPS United and make sure that the club regains its glory. “I am coming from a hotpot into another hotpot. Highlanders had a lot of pressure and I believe there is pressure as well at CAPS United. So I am ready for it,” said Nyoni.

Ellina Mhlanga Sports Reporter
WITH just over five months to go before the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, national coach Lloyd Makunde says they need to utilise the time left to ensure they are in a position to compete well.

The World Cup will take place from July 12 to 21 with 16 countries vying for the title.

“Personally, I always watch Australia play, even before I was appointed national coach. They play very well, so it’s an uphill task but we are not going there to just go and watch them beat us,’’ he said.

“The Northern Ireland team, I have watched like four of their recent games and then Sri Lanka I think they have got the tallest players in netball.’’

Makunde said they were looking at the fitness of the players who have been on a break.

“The area of concern is the physical part. We need to get them into the best possible physical shape because they are all coming from the off-season.

‘’We need a high level of fitness.

“And we are also getting help from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee. They actually gave us their conditioning coaches to help us,” Makunde said.

The Gems’ last competition was the Diamond Challenge in South Africa late last year where they played the hosts, who fielded two teams, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia.

Makunde said it was part of their preparations for the World Cup.

“We thought we were fast when we went to South Africa but when we played South Africa we saw that we are not yet there.

‘’So, during these five months or so before the World Cup, we will work on that especially on our transition,” said Makunde.

The Gems coach said they have requested the national association to try and arrange friendly matches with some of the top countries such as Malawi and South Africa, who will also compete at the World Cup.

MADZOKERE ANGLING FOR SUNDOWNS MOVE

Cloud Fusire Sports Reporter
HIGHLY-RATED central defender Byron Madzokere is angling for a move to South African Premiership giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

The tough centre-back, who has been a regular member of the Warriors training squad since Sunday Chidzambwa took over as coach, had a trial stint at Sundowns.

Madzokere is also comfortable playing as the defensive midfielder.

“We all know that our local football does not pay that much, so we decided to allow players to leave for clubs that offer better opportunities and can put them under the spotlight,’’ said Yadah Stars owner Prophet Walter Magaya.

“We have Byron Madzokere, whom we think will not last long with us as he recently held trials with South Africa club Mamelodi Sundowns.’’

Magaya is also the technical director at the Premiership club.

Yadah Stars also expect winger Leeroy Mavunga to also move to Europe, if not in this window that closes tomorrow, then in the next transfer window.

Mavunga had a trial stint with Portuguese giants Benfica last year.

Magaya revealed he is turning his project into a franchise to identify and develop the best football talent in this country.

He said he will establish academies countrywide.

Last season the club lost their captain Jimmy Dzingai to Zambian side Power Dynamos.

The club recently appointed former ZRP club captain Genesis Mangombe as their head coach to replace Thomas Ruzive.

Magaya believes the appointment of the 35-year old CAF A coaching licence holder is in line with the club’s objective of promoting and opening opportunities to the youths.

“Our appointment of the youthful Genesis Mangombe as the head coach is evidence to show how serious and committed we are as a club in promoting our local talented youths.

“We are not expecting much from him but we thought that it is high time we should give him an opportunity to showcase his coaching capabilities in the top-flight league,” said Magaya.

The prophet, who took part in the Yadah team pre-season friendly match against the Mabvuku Select side, which they won 4-3 at the weekend, said development was their main thrust.

Yadah have offloaded the majority of their experienced players and opened doors for anumber of teenagers.

“Yadah Football Club’s main objective in the 2019 PSL season is not to win titles but to capture a lot of young stars who, in most cases, are unemployed and spend most of their time abusing drugs and committing crimes in their respective communities,’’ said Magaya.

“We are going to establish football academies around the country, starting in our major cities.

“In Harare we will start with Mbare, Mufakose, Mabvuku and Chitungwiza and I can assure you that the initiative will commence this year as we are already in (the) process of identifying places and dealing with some logistical issues.’’

Magaya said he was inspired to focus on talented teenagers because he believes the country was blessed with stars who just need the right guidance at the right time.

“We have retired 19 of the players we used last year and we have 60 youngsters in camp for trials and 25 of them will be coming on board ahead of the 2019 PSL season.

“Those that cannot make it into the senior team will be sent to our various football camps and they will be earning something to survive while waiting for their opportunities to come.

“We would want to make it clear that we did not drop players into the streets but we retired them for several reasons such as age and, mostly, for them to further their football careers by joining the ranks of coaches.

“Some of the players are already coaching our junior team, the likes of Milton Makopa and Brian Mapfumo.

“Most of them have indicated that they want to be coaches and we are in the process of working to ensure they get their papers and some will possibly attend coaching courses outside the country.’’

KHOZA ISSUES SOS . . . as Kapini, at 35, says he is still going strong

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
THE old warhorses, from 35-year-old Edward Sadomba’s sensational return to Dynamos to 46-year-old Egyptian World Cup record-breaking goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary ending his retirement from international football, have been grabbing headlines in recent days.

And, they have now been joined under the spotlight by veteran goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini, who turns 35 on July 17 this year, as clouds of doom gather over the South African PSL with its chairman, Irvin Khoza, dropping a bombshell yesterday the continent’s richest top-flight league could collapse.

The league has become a home for scores of Zimbabwean professional footballers, including Kapini, who is now in his 13th season there but Khoza emerged from an extraordinary Board of Governors meeting in Johannesburg to say their capacity to keep splashing the money was not under serious threat.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa want to amend their public broadcast regulations, to include the country’s football, and this could have a huge effect on the regulation of the free-to-air rights of sport in the Rainbow Nation and cripple the PSL who will forfeit their power to independently sell the broadcast rights of their league.

The South African PSL agreed a new multi-billion rand deal with SuperSport last month and Khoza said the clubs could lose as much as 80 percent of their annual revenue leading to a collapse of the organisation.

“ICASA wants to do this after the hard work we have put in? Players would not be getting paid as much if it was not for our current funding model. The current broadcast deal took work and time,” Khoza told the South African media yesterday.

“We did not break the law. Everything we did was within the framework. We did the work necessary. The broadcast deal has had an enormous impact on the state of SA football. Without it the PSL dies.

“Without adequate funding, this industry as we know it will collapse and will be back to what it was back in the 1980s. Clubs will cut support staff to the bone and our grant of R11m to SAFA will no longer be available.

“I hope this is an error from ICASA, but it is also a form of exclusion. They did not consult or try to understand our industry.

“We will defend ourselves rigorously. We will exhaust all options available to us. If it is not resolved, we will shut down the PSL.”

Amid all this drama, Kapini, who has had spells at local clubs Black Aces and Highlanders and South African teams Platinum Stars, Amazulu and Highlands Park in a 19-year career, continues to go strong.

The goalkeeper says the days when footballers were judged by their ages — and deemed excess baggage once they got past 30 years — have long disappeared.

He says things have changed in the past few years, with improvements in sports science, and footballers can now play for a longer period.

Yesterday, another member of the Thirty-Something Brigade in the South African Premiership, Ovidy Karuru, scored as Amazulu stunned Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in a league match.

Kapini singled out Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s big-money move to Juventus, at the age of 33, and Siphiwe Tshabalala’s break into European football at the age of 34 as examples of the changing world.

“This issue of dismissing players based on age is not only confined to South Africa but rather the COSAFA region,’’ Kapini told the latest edition of Kick-Off Magazine, where he is one of the thirty-something players in the South African Premiership who added their voice to the debate.

“When you turn 30, there is immediately a tendency of saying you are no longer as effective as you used to be.

“Just to prove how wrong that mindset is, Siphiwe Tshbalala got his move to Turkey just before he turned 34, which shows in Europe they appreciate your maturity in football, whilst here we are only concerned about pushing players out based on age.

“Of course, with age your speed decreases, but your football intelligence becomes better.

“What is important is performance more than age. Ronaldo is 33, but Juventus paid massive money to get him from Madrid because they value his performance more than age. Here in Africa all we ever make noise about is the age of players and how long someone has been playing.

“It shouldn’t matter that I was once teammates with Willem Jackson just like it shouldn’t be an issue that Itumeleng Khune played with (Shaun) Bartlett.

In Africa we have people with an obsession with pushing players down.’’

He insists science has changed all that.

“Nowadays there is the undergarment GPS player-tracking system used which gives detailed insight into individual’s aspects like heart rate and fatigue,” he said.

‘’So they no longer need to judge players based on the naked eye or age. With the use of technology you get to know when a player needs rest, it is amazing how technology has come into the game.’’

Kapini is likely to point to the decision by legendary Egyptian goalkeeper El-Hadary, to end his international football retirement, as another example of the changing world.

El-Hadary became the oldest footballer to feature in a World Cup match when he kept goals for the Pharaohs against Saudi Arabia in Russia.

Yesterday, he announced he was ending his retirement from international football.

El-Hadary, who also became the oldest player to save a penalty at the World Cup, quit international football after the tournament in Russia.

But, just six months later, he says he is having a change of heart and will make himself available to play for the Pharaohs at the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt.

The veteran goalminder has been a professional footballer for 26 years now, making his debut at Damietta in 1993, the year the domestic Premiership came into being before playing for Al Ahly, Sion, Ismaily, Zamalek, Al Merreikh, Al Ittihad, Wadi Degla and Al Tawoun.

He made his international debut in January 1996, in the very month Zimbabwean forward Tino Kadewere, who now plays for French side Le Havre, was born, and has made 159 appearances for his country.

El-Hadary is a four-time winner of the Nations Cup and now wants to say goodbye to his Egyptian fans with one final appearance for the Pharaohs on home soil at this year’s AFCON finals.

“My ultimate goal is to be Egypt’s goalkeeper in the coming Africa Cup of Nations,” El- Hadary said on his official Facebook page yesterday.

Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff, at 40 years, four months and 13 days, England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, just two months short of his 41st birthday, the then 41-year-old Northern Irishman Pat Jennings, Roger Milla at 42 years, one month and eight days and Colombian goalminder Faryd Mondragon, at 43 years, three days, all played for their countries at the World Cup at such ripe ages.

While goalkeepers have dominated this class of veterans, more outfield players are now joining the clubof veterans.

The Premier Soccer League has come under threat of losing its exclusivity as the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) intends to amend its regulations.

Caps’ confidence renewed

Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe is looking forward to the 2019 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season with a big sense of optimism as he nears the completion of transfer business that has seen him revamp his squad after a difficult 2018 campaign.

BY Kevin Mapasure

Chitembwe said he was still considering other players, but he had already done most of the work that he intended to carry out in the transfer business, with just a couple of slots left.

Former FC Platinum forward Hillary Bakacheza and ex-Dynamos player Carlos Rusere are both training with the Green Machine and sought to impress Chitembwe.

A host of players from last season have since left the club voluntarily, while others were pushed out as Chitembwe sought a revolution after enduring a difficult campaign in which they finished 34 points behind champions FC Platinum.

Yesterday Chitembwe said he had since struck the right balance in introducing youthful players as well as holding on to the needed experience.

“So far so good, we are happy everyone who is supposed to be here is here and we are happy with what we have done so far. We are satisfied, with the squad we are looking at the demographic structure and experience that we have. We took stoke of last season and I think we have come up with the right remedies,” Chitembwe told the media.

The Caps United gaffer said he had not yet settled on his squad for the season but the technical team was nearer to closing their transfer books.

“We have done the biggest part in terms of bringing the players in. I think we still have about one or two slots, but we are pleased with what we have done so far. A lot of things have changed; the playing staff has changed. But they also have the same desire. They have a burning desire to represent this club and that gives me confidence.”

Among those that have joined Caps United are the former Highlanders due of Newman Siyanchali and Garbriel Nyoni.

Phineas Bhamusi also made a return after a year’s stint with Triangle, with Clive Rupiya joining in from Chapungu.

Chitembwe said the club will be looking to win honours this season, but acknowledged that the competition would be stiff.

“The competition in the PSL has always been difficult and this season is no exception. We know it’s going to be a difficult season,” Chitembwe said.

He said like any other team, they had targets, but for now, they were focused on player fitness and building a competitive team.

“When you win games, you have a good chance of winning (cups).”

He revealed that Ronald Chitiyo, who is recovering from an injury, could miss the start of the season, but should be fit within the first month of the
campaign.

“Ronald has been participating in training. Today, he missed out as he has to go and do part of his rehabilitation programme, but he returns tomorrow and he will continue with his jogging. We still have about two months to go and I am sure two weeks into the season, he will be fully fit for the games.”

Chicken Inn raid Dynamos again

AMBITIOUS Castle Lager Premier Soccer League side Chicken Inn have made their title intentions clear by making another major signing, this time grabbing Dynamos’ attacking midfielder-cum winger Valentine Kadonzvo, who has been training with the club.

BY FORTUNE MBELE

Kadonzvo (26) started training with the Gamecocks on Monday at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds and coach Joey Antipas yesterday confirmed the player’s presence.

Antipas started his pre-season training with the club yesterday after arriving from Germany where he underwent a three-week long coaching attachment with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.

“Valentine (Kadonzvo) is here. I think he signed two or three years with us. It is just my first day and it was good to see all the players pushing themselves and the turnout is looking good. We still have to compile our list for this year’s squad and we have to bring in some players and others have to go,” Antipas said.

Other former Dynamos players at Chicken Inn are attacking midfielder Brett Amidu, who was on loan to the Glamour Boys last year from FC Platinum and has since moved to the Gamecocks as well as striker Panashe Mutasa, while defender Phakamani Dube has also been spotted training with Chicken Inn.

Amidu has to sort out his contract issues with FC Platinum before he can commit to Chicken Inn who are involved in another player wrangle with the champions over former Bulawayo Chiefs’ striker Perfect Chikwende, believed to have signed both clubs but is in Zvishavane.

Assistant coach Prince Matore and manager Sikhumbuzo Banda had been taking the boys through their paces before Antipas’ arrival.

Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year finalist Innocent Mucheneka, who was linked with a move to either South Africa or Caps United, has been absent without official leave.

Antipas confirmed he has not heard from the midfielder although Chicken Inn have said he is still contacted to the club.

“Mucheneka still has not reported for training. He is AWOL,” Antipas said.

Chicken Inn have also signed Sipho Ndlovu from Bulawayo City, Clive Augusto from Ngezi Platinum Stars, and Harare City’s Malvin Gaki.

Ngezi Platinum Stars’ goalkeeper Donovan Bernard, Tichaona Chipunza and Donald Teguru have also indicated their intentions of joining Chicken Inn.

Dereck Chisora Set for Takam Rematch

Dereck Chisora could be set for a quick return to the ring after France-based heavyweight Carlos Takam called out the veteran Zimbabwe-born British heavyweight boxer for a rematch following their initial bout six months ago.

The 35-year-old Harare-born fighter stopped Takam in an exciting fight in which he was trailing going into the eighth round in July before suffering a brutal knockout loss to Dillian Whyte at the O2 Arena in London last month.

Takam, on the other hand, returned to winning ways on the undercard of Chisora’s loss to Whyte in December and with trainer Don Charles confirming the Londoner will carry on, wants to face him again.

“It’s true, I do want revenge,” Takam told Sky Sports in an interview.

“With all the respect due to Derek, the first fight was an accident. It happens. As we say back home, sometimes even the snake can tumble.

“If I can fight Derek one more time, it won’t be the same story. I will completely correct what happened.

Takam added: “They put on a great show for the fans but we knew whatever happened, Dillian had more of a chance of winning than Chisora did. I have heard he prepared and trained very well for the rematch with Whyte and he is very disappointed losing it.”

Takam admits he has matured since losing to Chisora and promoter Christian Cherchi would welcome the rematch.

“It makes sense, a rematch with Chisora, because the first one was a great fight,” he said.

“We are working closely with Matchroom and even if Chisora is working with David Haye now, I am sure they would be interested in this one.

“Wembley Stadium would be perfect. Anthony Joshua is the only one who can do the main event there, so we will have to wait.”

The challenge by Takam comes after Chisora’s trainer Don Charles revealed that his boxer will not retire from the sport in the wake of his latest setback.

“One thing that’s been ascertained, is Derek Chisora is not retiring, he wants to fight on,” Charles told Sky Sports.

“He’s a very proud man and obviously if he said he wasn’t hurting, that would be a lie. I know my boy really well, it’s hurting. He’s putting a brave face on. “The same way as a coach, I’m hurting, but I have to put a brave face on publicly. It hurts, but we’ve been here before.

“We will repair. He will repair and he’ll be back, especially now with the inclusion of David Haye, the new regime, the discipline that David has brought into Chisora’s life.

“If he can build on this, then I think Derek Chisora is a force to be reckoned with, within this current market.”

Charles says he wants to have Chisora meet with his manager David Haye and Eddie Hearn to come up with a plan for his next fight.
