5 SKIPPAS, DSTV, THE BEER AND WHY WE LIKE IT FOR PLATINUM

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
IN  a world usually hostile to those not fluent in English, he has somehow found a way to transform himself into a celebrity, an unlikely musician and a brand ambassador largely because of his serious challenges in speaking the Queen’s language.

He became such an overnight sensation a South African lager beer, ‘’5 Skippers,’’ was even launched in his name, he was invited to grace his favourite football club’s end-of-season awards ceremony as a special guest and a number of songs have been released based on his strange lyrics. And, today, he even features on a promotional advert for DStv where he joins a heavyweight cast of some of South Africa’s finest actors, football stars and analysts.

Well, Sphamandla Goodenough Sithole, is coming to the City of Kings this week.

And Bulawayo should brace itself for quite a show when it hosts this eccentric man, who dresses as a woman when he goes to the stadium to cheer his favourite football club, and who describes himself as Orlando Pirates’ number one fan.

The Buccaneers, who became the first Southern African club to be crowned champions of Africa in 1995, are coming to town for a Champions League showdown against FC Platinum at Barbourfields on Saturday.

And, when Pirates are in town, Sithole is usually part of the travelling party.

The 48-year-old is easy to pick out even in a crowd, especially in a stadium.

He always wears his striking black-and-white head gear, black-and-white dress and is fiercely loyal to his Buccaneers, a team he started supporting as a 12-year-old, despite being taken to football matches as a kid by an uncle who supported Kaizer Chiefs.

Sithole has become a household name in South Africa today, just like the football stars he loves, and transformed himself into a musician while his strange lyrics, plucked from a television interview that thrust him into the spotlight, have found their way into songs released by rapper Cassper Nyovest and Bulawayo’s DJ Cooperman.

His extraordinary rise to become a celebrity fan is a measure of how South Africans can convert anything, including those who would be ridiculed or shamed elsewhere — be it in their struggles with English or otherwise — into commercial success stories.

‘’I like it for DStv,’’ Sithole says in that Multichoice promotional video.

The phrase was plucked from the infamous television interview, after he won a Fan of the Day award, which he conducted with the then SABC football presenter, Deshi Bhaktawer, in 2011, which we publish again here:

Deshi Bhaktawer: Pushing Passion Fan Of The Moment . . . Goodenough, you dressed today, very, very unusual for a man?

Sithole: Yes I did, my, you, you, you, my your, that’s why, you, you, must, you must like it for the Pirates. I’m very tired for the, always these people, you think, like a people you must show me, what is happening for the, for the Pirates. Pirates is not a one, one, one, one skipper for the, you must know, you show for the five people, five skippers must is not, must always, must put you one short.

Deshi: Okay Goodenough, just quickly tell me when you go to the shop to buy these clothing or this clothing, what do they say?

Sithole: You must think, you must show, you must show for the, something for the Zulu, Zulu as, as Sotho or what what, you must somebody, now that’s why you must buy him for the, all this shoe, this short, tell us, you must know, you know, you must tell, you must know everybody must.

Deshi: Right okay, thank you!

The interview went viral, and as of yesterday, had clocked more than 320 524 views on YouTube, while the phrase, ‘’I like it for the Pirates,’’ began trending around the region.

But rather than reduce him into an object who would be ridiculed, for his struggles with the English language, the South Africans found immense commercial value in him.

And award-winning rapper Nyovest produced a song with the lyrics plucked from that interview, and so did Bulawayo’s DJ Cooperman, while Sithole has also produced an album and a single related to that event.

Bhaktawer, who was once a Pirates goalkeeper during his days as a professional footballer, went even better and produced a lager beer, named ‘’5 Skippas,’’ which has since been selling well in South Africa.

‘’There’s a new golden lager making the bar rounds in town — and it’s challenging everything about the mass market beer category,’’ Kick-Off announced in November 2016.

‘’A beer made by South Africans for South Africans, it’s difficult to think of 5 Skippas Superior Golden Lager as the new beer on the block, when it’s already crept its way into the hearts of local beer drinkers, finding the magic to make the all-important leap from unknown brand to beer of choice.

‘’The product of the now legendary interview between former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, turned TV presenter, turned entrepreneur Deshi Bhaktawer, and enamoured fan-turned-spokesperson Good Enough Sithole, where the term ‘5 Skippas’ was first coined, the beer is a smooth and refreshing reflection of our local spirit and love for sport.

‘’As a challenger to the mass market, the 5 Skippas brand counts values such as unity, authenticity, and locality as the main drivers behind its beer, aiming to weave a fabric between the different cultures in South Africa regardless of gender, age, culture, or ethnicity.’’

Sithole is the principal brand ambassador of the beer even though, for all his eccentricity at the football matches, he has never tasted alcohol in the 48 years of his life.

He likes it for his Pirates, for the beer with his nickname and DStv but, of course, we like it for our Platinum. After all, Johnnie Walker Platinum,  which cost an average R1 149.00 a bottle in South Africa is worth far much more than five crates of 24 ‘’5 Skippers,’’ lager beers.

Either way, we like it for the Champions League and our City of Kings.

Zambian Pair Poses Threat to FC Platinum

Eddie Chikamhi in HARARE and Sikhumbuzo Moyo in BULAWAYO

FORMER Zimbabwe youth international Butler Masango believes the Zambian duo of Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga could pose the greatest danger to FC Platinum when they kick-off their group phase campaign against Orlando Pirates at Barbourfields this Saturday.

Masango is now based in South Africa where he is heavily involved in developing young footballers.

“It’s going to be a tough game because Orlando Pirates play counter-attacking football using their wing-backs and they have good strikers — the two Zambians Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga.

“I haven’t seen FC Platinum playing but I believe if they can maintain their team shape and don’t give Pirates time and space on the ball they can get a favourable result.

“They (FC Platinum) have a very good coach in Norman Mapeza, so it gonna be an exciting game but I will support my home country team and hope they win all their home matches,” said Masango.

The platinum miners were handed a major lift ahead of the battle with the recovery of Zimbabwe international Kevin Moyo from injury.

The Warriors defender picked up the knock in the last game of the 2018 season against Triangle United.

“He (Moyo) is now training alongside the rest of the squad,” said Mapeza.

FC Platinum are set to descend on Bulawayo today for the final leg of their preparations against Pirates.

The cheapest ticket for the rest of the ground will be going for $5 while those who will sit on the wings will part with $10 with VIP seats costing $20.

The platinum miners were also drawn against defending champions Esperance of Tunisia and Horoya Athletic Club of Guinea.

Club spokesperson Chido Chizondo yesterday said FC Platinum will camp in Bulawayo from today.

“We will advise of the training itinerary once we arrive there,” said Chizondo.

FC Platinum were dealt a blow when CAF ruled that their Mandava home ground was not fit to host the group stages of the tournament.

Their fans have vowed to follow their team to Bulawayo this weekend and back their cause against the Soweto giants. Bulawayo giants Highlanders have called on the fans in the city to fill up Barbourfields on Saturday to enjoy the game.

“Let’s come in numbers and enjoy the game of football as Champions FC Platinum lock horns with Orlando Pirates in a CAF Champions League group stage match set for Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday.

“Be there when it happens! Don’t miss out! #FillUpBF,” the club posted on their macro blogging site Twitter.

Warriors and Dynamos cheerleader Chris “Romario” Musekiwa said it was their obligation to mobilise fans to come and rally behind the Zimbabwean representatives.

“The big match is upon us on Saturday as FC Platinum takes Orlando Pirates head on at Barbourfields Stadium in a CAF Champions League first group match.

“As national cheerleaders it’s our obligation to mobilise fans to come and rally behind our Zimbabwean representatives as they clash against the South African giants.

“It’s beyond club affiliation, our national pride is at stake when it comes to this stage of the game.

“We are calling on football supporters from all corners of the country to come in their droves and fill up Barbourfields to create a carnival atmosphere to ensure FC Platinum prevail,” said Musekiwa.

Meanwhile, FC Platinum are adjusting to the disappointment of failing to approval for their home matches to be played at Mandava and have moved on from that heartbreak.

“Everyone has moved on and we are ready to play in Bulawayo, BF (Barbourfields) is now our home and everyone is now feeling very comfortable going there,” said Chizondo.

“That is why we are going to Bulawayo tomorrow (today) which is far much earlier because we feel Bulawayo will be our home.

“We are very confident all football stakeholders in the country will be supporting us as we are representing the country in this competition, it is not about FC Platinum but Zimbabwe and that is why we do not have a problem in playing anywhere in Zimbabwe.”

Zim Seal Series in Namibia

Zimbabwe women’s cricket team captain Marry-Anne Musonda led from the front yesterday as the visiting side swept to a 57-run victory over hosts Namibia to seal the Namib Desert Women’s T20 Challenge at the Sparta Club in Walvis Bay.

Musonda’s 60 runs helped Zimbabwe claim an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series after winning the opening two games comfortably at the weekend.

They beat Namibia by six wickets in the first game on Saturday and then came back on Sunday charged up to claim an eight-wicket win.

The Zimbabweans were put in to bat first after losing the toss for the first time and they put on 136/8 before restricting the hosts to 79/9. Despite the setback of losing Ashley Ndiraya (5) early after the opener had faced only seven deliveries, Modester Mupachikwa (22) and Chipo Mugeri (23) kept the scoreboard ticking.

But then Musonda, who was named team skipper just before their departure for Namibia, shone with the bat when she got into the fray batting at number five.

She struck nine fours in her 60-run knock in 49 balls before she fell to Reehana Khan late in the innings as the Zimbabweans tried to stretch their score.

This was the first half ton of the series and, more importantly, the team’s batting performance ensured Zimbabwe powered to a competitive total.

The target was always going to be an uphill task for the hosts who are yet to get a triple digit total in the series.

Namibia were two down early in the innings after losing both openers Yasmin Khan and Adri van der Merwe, who has been their best player with the bat in the series, with only 11 on the board.

Thereafter, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Roche Venter (15), Arrasta Diergaardt (22) and Sunne Wittmann (10) tried to patch up the innings but their efforts were not enough as the Zimbabweans continued to pin them down.

Every one of the six bowlers used by Zimbabwe got, at least, a wicket yesterday with Josephine Nkomo and Precious Marange leading the pack with took two wickets each.

Tutani Tipped for Mushowani Job

By Takudzwa Chitsiga
VETERAN coach Arthur “Tuts” Tutani is likely to rekindle his relationship with newly-promoted Premiership side Mushowani Stars for the 2019 season. Tutani is the frontrunner for the coaching post after Mushowani Stars were forced to make changes to their technical department as their gaffer coach Levison Selous does not have a CAF A licence.

The Madziva-based side are coming into the top-flight after securing the ZIFA Northern Region Division One title and the Chegutu Pirates coach is likely to steer the ship this coming season.

Tutani has vast experience at both Division One and Premier League levels as he once guided army side Black Rhinos.

Mushowani Stars are expected to bring in a qualified coach and Selous will remain with the technical staff.

Ivan Nyakasoka, the Mushowani Stars director, said they were almost done in recruiting a new coach.

“We are working on that and at the moment we have managed to short-list some of the candidates who will be working with us next season.

“We will make sure that by January 22, when we resume preparations, we will have a new coach.

“However, I am assuring everybody that Selous will be part of the project as he took us to Canaan after a long struggle.

“We are not going to overlook our former coach as he will be in the technical department. He is someone with a better understanding of the club and has a good rapport with the players.

“I think in our first year we will be out to avoid relegation and if anything comes along the way it will be bonus for us,” said Nyakasoka.

Yohane Predicts Humdinger

By Collin Matiza

FORMER Warriors left-back Charles Yohane believes this Saturday’s CAF Champions League showdown between FC Platinum and Orlando Pirates at Barbourfields will be a serious test of character for the hosts. Thousands of Orlando Pirates fans are also expected to make their way across the Limpopo River to watch this tie.

Yohane, who played for CAPS United before he moved to South Africa to join Bidvest Wits in 1997, predicts a humdinger which could go either way.

Speaking exclusively to The Herald from his base in Johannesburg, South Africa, Yohane (45) said:

“I foresee an exciting match. FC Platinum have been doing well over the years in Zimbabwe. Now this will be a good test of character (for them) considering they are playing one of the top clubs in South Africa.

“Pirates are doing very well at the moment. They are playing an exciting brand of football. Their technical team has assembled a very good team capable of beating any team in Africa on their day. They are playing the blend of football the fans love to watch.

“They believe attack after attack is the best way of defending which makes them a dangerous team when in possession. They have the quality players that suits well in their style of play. They are quick, skilful and technically very good.”

But Yohane believes if FC Platinum can absorb the pressure in the opening minutes and gradually apply themselves, he was sure “we will have an exciting game to watch”.

“Orlando Pirates’ strongest points are their midfield and the front three. They also attack with both full-backs when they go forward to outnumber and counter oppositions of which I think the weakest point is their back four plus the goalkeeper.

“They play counter-attack after counter-attack, especially in the early stages of the game.

“I don’t know much about FC Platinum players but I believe in Zimbabwean players. I think they will be able to stand their ground against Pirates. The disadvantages might be that the league in South Africa is halfway through while in Zimbabwe it’s off-season.

“I know South Africans respect Zimbabwean players, so, I’m sure Pirates are going to approach this game with caution . . . I think the match will end in a draw,” Yohane predicted.

Yohane starred for the Warriors at the two AFCON finals they first qualified for in 2004 and 2006.

He was part of the trailblazing CAPS United side of 1996 which scooped all but one of the trophies on offer in Zimbabwe, including the league title, under coach Steve “The Dude” Kwashi.

He rubbed shoulders with fellow stars like Stewart “Shutto” Murisa, Alois Bunjira, Joe “Kode” Mugabe, Farayi Mbidzo, Morgan Nkathazo and the late Cheche Billiat.

Silver “Bhonzo” Chigwenje was the team captain.

Yohane left CAPS United around 1996 to join South Africa’s Amazulu after they had watched him playing for the national team.

He was forced to leave Zimbabwe because South Africa had just launched the lucrative Premier Soccer League which saw them changing their football season to run from August to May.

He then moved from Amazulu to Wits in 1997 following a change in the team’s management and that time only three foreigners were allowed to be on the field of play at a time in South Africa. Murisa and another Zimbabwean player Elasto Lungu Kapowezha were also signed by Amazulu and the team also had the late former Warriors and Dynamos stalwart centre-back Francis Shonhayi.

Concerned of being benched because of the foreign quota system, Yohane decided to leave Amazulu and join Wits.

He played for Wits until 2006, making it 10 seasons in the colours of the Johannesburg side.

He also had a stint with FC AK in the South African First Division but he was recalled by the former club to start a new career of coaching as a player-coach for the reserve side, just to guide the young players eyed for promotion into the first team.

That was in 2008 and to date he has been attached to Bidvest Wits as a development coach in different age-groups. Last year he was also coaching a new private academy in the Sandton area of Johannesburg although he is still under Bidvest Wits. Yohane also captained Wits from 2002 to 2006, a period which he said was the highlight of his illustrious football career.

Jordaan blames AFCON miss out on politics

$

South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan believes that politics was the real reason behind South Africa missing out on hosting the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament. South Africa were favourites to inherit the rights to host the prestigious football showpiece after original hosts, Cameroon, were stripped of the duty to do so in November last year due to a lack of preparation.

On Tuesday, the Confederation of African Football announced Egypt as the host nation with less than six months to prepare for the global event.

However, before the announcement, Jordaan was confident that SAFA put in a solid bid and that the country would host AFCON for a third time after doing so in 1996 and 2013.

Egypt have hosted the tournament on four previous occasions, most recently in 2006. “If you compare South Africa with Egypt, we clearly have an advantage because we have the infrastructure, the experience … just everything in place,” Jordaan told City Press.

“The politics are another matter. Arab countries are very entrenched and CAF’s headquarters are in Cairo.”

In a year where South Africans are heading to the polls to vote in the national elections in May – a month before the tournament – many believed that SAFA’s bid would fail.

However, when asked if SAFA received the backing of the South African government in their bid to host AFCON, Jordaan was extremely coy.

“The bidding process was a late thing. We wrote to CAF to say they must give us details of what to expect from the government,” he responded.

“Normally, the requirement would be infrastructure. There will be no cost incurred for infrastructure.”

According to reports, R120 million is needed to stage the tournament and the financial-stricken SAFA approached the South African government for help prior to announcing their bid to take over from Cameroon. Meanwhile, SAFA acting CEO Russell Paul said after CAF’s verdict that he believed South Africa are far better equipped as hosts compared to Egypt.

“Without being arrogant from a technical perspective, there is no other country on the continent better-suited [than South Africa] to host, that can boast the infrastructure, roads and stadiums we have. We don’t have a fight with Egypt, we have a fight with the way the process has unfolded,” he said as quoted by The Citizen website.

“We wrote to Caf before the announcement to say there is a list of requirements for a bid, a process to be followed. There is supposed to be an inspection team, but they never arrived in the country. Secondly, they said the announcement would be on January 9 and suddenly it was moved to the 8th.

“We had prepared a delegation to go (to Dakar) tomorrow, only to find the Egyptians had been there a while, with government representatives, ready to make their presentation.”

The 2019 tournament will be the 32nd edition and will be played from June 15 to July 13.

Higuain heads for the Bridge

Long-term Chelsea target Gonzalo Higuain has agreed to join the Stamford Bridge side, according to reports in Spain. Marca say the deal will be completed in the next few days, with the 31-year-old becoming the London club’s second signing of the transfer window after Christain Pulisic.

Higuain’s arrival will signal the departure of Alvaro Morata — with Sevilla keen on the Spaniard.
Higuain has been on loan at AC Milan from Juventus but has not hit form this season and Chelsea are prepared to pay his €40m transfer fee as well as his €8m a year wages.

Maurizio Sarri is keen to reunite with the Argentine international after they enjoyed a productive spell together at Napoli, where the former Real Madrid man netted 37 goals.

Last month AC Milan revealed Chelsea were yet to make an offer for Higuain, despite speculation he is all set for Stamford Bridge.

Milan’s Sporting Director Leonardo insisted no move has been made to take their on-loan striker and cut short his spell at the San Siro.

Sweswe Castigates Clubs

$

By Cloud Fusire and Takudzwa Chitsiga

FOOTBALLERS Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Thomas Sweswe has castigated local football clubs for running out players’ contracts while having outstanding issues with them. He says this was destroying the careers of a number of young players who are losing faith in the game.

Addressing journalists at Motor Action Sports Club yesterday, where FUZ are preparing for “the out-of-contracts players tournament” to be held on Sunday, Sweswe said there were a high number of young talented players whose contracts were being left to run out by clubs.

However, those clubs would still have some outstanding issues with the players. Former Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa will lead a Bulawayo Select side during that tournament.

“It is of great concern for the future of our football if we look at the number of young talented players whose contracts are being left to run out by our clubs,” said Sweswe.

“Every year, since we started our programme, the number of issues concerning unsolved issues between players and clubs are increasing and this is putting the future of our young generation at risk.

“Clubs should, at least, notify or release these players in time so that they can look for alternative teams instead of letting the players contracts run out all the time, especially without notifying them and resolving issues with them.”

ZIFA communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela urged clubs to follow football rules and ethics.

“We urge all clubs in the country to be professional and follow the code of ethics when dealing with players as it is stipulated in the club licensing which requires them to act in a professional way all the time,” said Gwesela.

Former Dynamos and Warriors defender Sweswe, however, believes that the FUZ programme of out-of-contracts tournament and training will present these players with an opportunity to resurrect their careers.

“But we believe that through the programmes we are doing around the country we will help these players with an opportunity to continue with their careers,” said Sweswe.

“At this forthcoming tournament on Sunday we have invited several coaches from the Premier League and Division One to come and watch.

“This will definitely help some players to be identified by these coaches.

“We are happy with the programme and in Harare we started on a high note with 33 players turning up on the opening day on Monday and we expect more players as we progress.

“We are running the training camp concurrently this time and there is a good response from the players.

“In Harare we have Tonderai Ndiraya and Naison Muchekela while for the Bulawayo players we have Calisto Pasuwa, Agent Sawu and Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15″ Sibanda as their coaches.”

He said they were preaching more than just football.

“We have since shifted focus and spread our wings and last year we focused on drug abuse by players but this year we are running with the theme: “My budget, My future,” said Sweswe.

“It has since come to our attention that most players die as paupers after a long career because of mismanagement of their income and so, this year, we will be emphasising on that as well as life, skills and how to handle media fame.

“We are going to have some experts like Nick Munyonga on drug abuse and Tinashe Nengomasha on players’ contracts.

“There will be a lot of scouts and coaches and we are confident that some players will be signed as, at least, 10 players managed to get contracts last year.”

Salah retains African title

Mohamed Salah completed a memorable day for Egyptian football by retaining his African Player of the Year award in Senegal on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old Liverpool star finished first with club-mate Senegalese Sadio Mane and Arsenal and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the other finalists.

“I have dreamt of winning this award since I was a child and now I have done so twice in a row,” Salah said soon after receiving his trophy in Dakar. “My thanks go to my family, my team-mates and my fans and I dedicate this trophy to my homeland, Egypt.”

It was an identical outcome to last year when Salah became only the second Egyptian after 1983 winner Mahmoud al Khatib to be voted the best footballer in Africa.

Egypt crushed sole rivals South Africa 16-1 earlier on Tuesday in a CAF executive committee vote in Dakar to decide which country succeeded Cameroon as 2019 Cup of Nations hosts. Delays to preparations and concerns about security resulted in the central African nation being replaced as hosts, and they will stage the 2021 tournament instead.

While the 15-vote winning margin for Egypt was unexpected, the success of Salah was anticipated as he continues to score regularly for the English Premier League leaders.

Salah netted 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season — his first with the Anfield club — and has bagged 13 Premier League goals so far this season.

Ironically, Aubameyang has scored one league goal more than Salah, topping the charts with Tottenham Hotspur and England star Harry Kane on 14.

Salah was born in a northern Egyptian town Nagrig and used to make eight-hour return trips on buses to train with Cairo-based El Mokawloon (Arab Contractors).

Spotted by scouts from Swiss club Basel, he moved there in 2012 before joining Premier League giants Chelsea two years later.

Baba Harare Faces Tall Order

By Godwin Muzari Arts Editor

Baba Harare has a tall order.

The musician – born Braveman Chizvino – was one of brave sailors that jumped off Jah Prayzah’s ship in the face of a storm that hit the Third Generation voyage a couple of years ago. His first album as a solo navigator titled “Chikwama Changu” was not a rich wallet, but his second release “Minamato YaRasta” saw his prayers being answered as the song “The Reason Why” became one of the most popular tracks in 2018.

Propelled by an exciting video that took third place on ZBCTV Coca Cola Top 50, the song that has become popularly known as “Hat Dzemurara” put Baba Harare on a plateau of the local music terrain.

Loads of attention went Baba Harare’s way as waves of popularity began pushing his new ship towards a harbour of success.

Many observers applauded Braveman for his bravery when he jumped off Jah Prayzah’s ship, which is still circling in troubles of persistent storms.

“The Reason Why” seems to be driving him to a safe destination in the promised land.

But local music voyages are not that plain. The real test for Baba Harare is still to come.

On Friday, the musician launches his third album titled “Ramba Wakadzvanya” at Food Nest at Longcheng Plaza in Harare.

Now, that is the real test. After setting a considerably high bar with his jiti beat on “The Reason Why”, Baba Harare has not only attracted popularity, he has also exposed himself to an allegoric examination called the litmus test.

He has a serious point to prove. He has a tall order.

Songs on “Ramba Wakadzvanya”, which means keep on pressing, have to prove that his effort is good enough to put more pressure on established names in the industry.

Over the past years, many new comers in the industry have exposed themselves to serious scrutiny by exerting pressure and failing to maintain it. Such musicians have now been condemned to the basket of one-hit-wonders.

It is not an attractive basket at all. It is a place of lost potential. An arena of chancers and opportunists.

On Friday Baba Harare has to prove that he does not belong to this basket. He has to show that he does not ride on luck.

After all, “Hat Dzemurara” did not have many components of creativity. It was an old traditional beat carrying common lyrics. It can be aptly classified under the umbrella of fast-paced folk songs, just like Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima’s “Chikwama” that gave the musician temporary comfort.

But “Hat Dzemurara” saved its purpose.

It introduced Baba Harare to the music world in a big way. Now he has the attention. Now he is facing high levels of anticipation. If he delivers a good project on “Ramba Wakadzvanya”, the energetic singer will safely make his way up the ladder of music success. The musician believes he has done enough groundwork to maintain the momentum and zeal among his fans.

“I believe songs on this album will make a mark. I have worked hard to make sure that I keep the momentum. It is not easy to breakthrough after parting ways with a popular musician like Jah Prayzah. The attention I am getting means a lot. I have to keep the market satisfied,” said Baba Harare.”I am happy that I learnt a lot from Jah Prayzah and I am using my experience to navigate the tricky waters of music. It is not easy to keep satisfying fans, but I believe the upcoming album will take us to another level.”

Baba Harare’s manager Filda “Mama Filo” Muchabaiwa said all is set for the launch.

“We have done the groundwork and we are waiting for the day. We want people to come and welcome Baba Harare’s new baby. It is going to be a big day for us and we have invited many musicians to be part of the event. It is a good way to start the year for our camp. We promise our fans nothings, but the best,” said Muchabaiwa.

HAB aims at inter-provincials

HARARE Athletics Board secretary-general, Sledge Chinyoka, is confident the province will bag more medals at this year’s edition of the annual inter-provincial cross-country championships scheduled for Kwekwe next month. The province will this weekend hold a selection contest at Prince Edward School in preparation for the big event.

The inter-provincial meet will bring together the best athletes from across Zimbabwe at Torwood in Redcliff, just outside Kwekwe, on February 7.

And to prepare for the event, Chinyoka said the HAB will hold a selection event on Saturday at Prince Edward School meant to choose the best 25 athletes from the seven districts of Harare.

“We have seven districts under Harare Province, including Chitungwiza, Mbare-Highfield and Warren Park, where we are going to select 25 best and talented athletes that include 15 seniors and 10 juniors,” said Chinyoka.

“This year we are aiming for better results. We want to double our medals tally from last year and become the champions.
‘’That is why we are holding this selection event early so that we will have more time to prepare with those that will qualify to represent our province in Torwood next month.’’

Among the participants in the selection event scheduled for Saturday will be Chitungwiza-based Canisious Nyamutsita, who won the 2017 Bulawayo 10km men road race, and last year’s Soweto women race winner Bertha Chikanga.
Chinyoka urged the athletes to desist from using prohibited drugs during the events.

“As we are preparing for this big event, we know that the temptation for the athletes to try and use prohibited substances is very high.

‘’But we are trying our best to educate our athletes on the dangers of using drugs and doing awareness campaigns so as to preserve the sport and promote fair competition all the time,” said Chinyoka.

FC Platinum clash excites Munetsi

Mukudzei Chingwere Sports Reporter
WARRIORS’ international star Marshall Munetsi has warned his fellow countryman that Orlando Pirates will do everything in their power to preserve the sanctity of club crest when they come to Barbourfields for the CAF Champions’ League group stage match against FC Platinum on Saturday.

Zimbabwe internationals — Munetsi and Kudakwashe Mahachi — are expected to be part of the Buccaneers fold that will be targeting to imperil the hopes of the country’s representatives in the African Safari.

Ordinarily the two would have loved a Zimbabwean club to have a good run in this competition but not this time after they have been sandwiched in an unwanted conflict of interest their wish now is to see the Happy People doing well in the African Safari.

The second-placed Sea Robbers behind early pacesetter Bidvest Wits in the South African Premier League are in the running to win the league’s ultimate price and are also aiming to ascertain themselves on the continent.

Orlando Pirates won the champions league in 1995 and Munetsi told The Herald from his Johannesburg base that they will be looking at making a mark on the continent again.

The versatile 22-year-old who is comfortable at right back, centreback and defensive midfield role is not expecting easy game though against the miners.

“The target is to keep our identity as a big club and to make sure we win the game at all cost (and) to start the group campaign on a good start, Orlando Pirates is a big club and it has a lot of supporters all over Africa.

“FC Platinum is a good team with a very good coach and a very good group of players that have won the league two seasons in a row so it is a game that is going to be entertaining and we have to be at our best to get a good result away from home,” he said.

The hard tackling Munetsi said he will be happy to be playing in Zimbabwe and has also implored football supporters in the country to come in their numbers and enjoy the game.

“It is always nice to come and play in Zimbabwe and it is always a great feeling for me to be home.

“It promises to be a good and exciting game between two teams who play beautiful football so they should come in their numbers to see also Orlando Pirates the biggest club in Africa,” said Munetsi.

If Munetsi plays at right back or central midfield supporters will be in for a titanic clash when he faces the evergreen Farai Madhanaga who seems to have outgrown the Zimbabwean league.

Orlando Pirates are expected in the country tomorrow and will likely be without the duo of Abbubaker Mobara and Ben Motshwari who missed the 4-2 win against Chippa United on Tuesday with injuries.

Meanwhile, FC Platinum has been training in Bulawayo and seems to be in the groove for the big match.

New signing Edmore Chirambadare has settled and because of his experience in South Africa he is likely to be drafted into the team that will do battle on Saturday.

Rinomhota chooses Warriors

FORMER Warriors trialist Bradley Pritchard has revealed that Reading star Andy Rinomhota is willing to pursue his international career with Zimbabwe.

BY HENRY MHARA

Andy Rinomhota (left) controls the ball away from Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford in an FA Cup match last week
The 21-year-old was born in England to a Zimbabwean father and British mother and is one of the several England-born Zimbabweans whom Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga wants to be part of the national team.

There were fears that the rising star would choose his country of birth over Zimbabwe, considering the rave views that he has been attracting since graduating into the first team of the Championship side in December.

However, Pritchard, who was once invited to the Warriors camp during his time at Charlton Athletic in 2014, has revealed that Rinomhota wants to play for Zimbabwe.

“Once had a chat with the guy (Rinomhota); he is more than willing to represent his country (Zimbabwe). The ball is in Zifa’s court now,” wrote Pritchard on social media site Facebook in response to Warriors fan Alvin Zhakata’s post, who had implored the authorities to give Rinomhota dual citizenship so he could play for Zimbabwe.

On the same thread, Warriors team manager Wellington Mupandare, who leads the initiative to tap into talent emerging from among the diaspora community, confirmed that they had started the process of securing the midfielder’s passport.

Mupandare is hoping they would have secured passports for all the several foreign-based Zimbabwean players they are chasing in time for the Warriors’ crucial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final qualifier against Congo Brazzaville in March.

Rinomhota was included in the Warriors’ provisional squad for the 2018 Cosafa Cup held in South Africa in June, but was eventually omitted from the final squad as he is yet to acquire a Zimbabwean passport. The young, but talented defensive midfielder has been receiving rave views in the Championship, the English second-tier division since graduating into the Reading first team.

He progressed into the senior set-up last season — starting in the Carabao Cup as he built up senior experience — but a lengthy injury absence mid-season hampered his progress.

Rinomhota has fought back from injury issues, though, and has been voted as man of the match by Reading supporters in almost all the games he has started, including an FA Cup match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku scored in the first half to secure passage to the fourth round for the Premier League outfit, in a result that could be seen as harsh on a spirited Reading performance.

Rinomhota’s classy show in that match caught the eye of former England and Manchester United defender Phil Neville, who picked him and fellow midfielder Liam Kelly for special mention.

“I can’t believe Reading are so low in the Championship, given the way they played. They have some really good players in this team, with Kelly and Rinomhota especially impressive. They’ve played with real confidence and flair — they just lacked a bit of composure in the final third. They don’t look like a team who haven’t won in 10 games – they’re playing with real confidence and real arrogance,” Neville said in his post-match analysis.

Rinomhota is one of several foreign born players the Warriors technical team has identified to infuse into the national team.

Nottingham Forest defender Tendayi Darikwa and Wales-based Alec Mudimu have already played for the Warriors, helping the team in the Afcon qualifiers, where Zimbabwe is on the brink of qualifying for the finals.

Reading are playing Nottingham Forest at the weekend in a league match, and the Warriors supporters will be hoping that Darikwa can use the occasion to further convince Rinomhota to consider Zimbabwe.

Other stars that the Warriors are pursuing are Adam Chicksen, Kundai Benyu, Macauley Bonne, Tristan Nydam and Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson.

Mukudzei Chingwere Sports Reporter
FC PLATINUM have chartered buses to ferry their supporters from Zvishavane to Bulawayo for the epic CAF Champions’ League match. “We are hoping to get a good crowd behind the team here in Bulawayo and the atmosphere in the city is very encouraging that they will be behind us for a national cause,” said club spokesperson Chido Chizondo.

“We are expecting a big number of people from all over the country to come for the big match. Five buses for supporters will also be coming from Zvishavane so that we can help in cheering the team.’’

Meanwhile, Kuda Mahachi says Bulawayo is a second home for Orlando Pirates because they have a huge fan base in the City of Kings.

The Zimbabwe international midfielder even says all the people of Bulawayo support the Soweto giants.

Mahachi, who grew up in Bulawayo supporting the Buccaneers, is expecting a warm reception for his South African side.

‘’Should I be considered to travel with the team to Zimbabwe, I will certainly be emotional because I’ll be going back home to a place where I grew up,’’ he told his club’s website.

‘’Everybody in Bulawayo supports Orlando Pirates.

“We grew up watching the team and supporting players like Teko Modise and Joseph Kamwendo, who were an inspiration to watch.

“The team I even played for while I was based there, Highlanders, modelled themselves around Orlando Pirates.

‘’They even adopted the Club’s iconic crossbones salute before the start of their matches.

“I have been inundated with calls from back home telling me that they are excited about the prospects of seeing Orlando Pirates play in Bulawayo.

“They are telling me that they are 100 percent behind us. They have also been enquiring about the likes of Thembinkosi Lorch, Vincent Pule and the rest of the guys because they follow the team religiously.’’

Having scored two crucial goals in successive matches, Mahachi has proven to be quite the impact player coming off the bench.

“We can’t underestimate FC Platinum, they are a quality side with a pedigree having won the league in Zimbabwe.

‘’We can expect them to come hard at us.

“Their game is almost similar to ours because they also enjoy playing with the ball on the ground and keeping possession. It should be an interesting game on the weekend,” he said.

Zim women’s cricket team whitewash Namibia

THE Zimbabwe women’s cricket team wrapped up their tour of Namibia in style yesterday after posting a 5-0 whitewash of the hosts in the Namib Desert Women T20 Challenge at the Sparta Oval in Walvis Bay. The tourists, who dominated the series from the first game, were on top again yesterday dismantling the Namibians for a meagre 60 runs, thanks largely to the four-wicket haul from Nomatter Mutasa, who recently made her T20I debut during the tour.

Mutasa had the best return of four wickets for nine runs, with one of the veterans of the game in the Zimbabwe team Precious Marange weighing in with astonishingly economic figures of 3/5 from her four overs.

The Namibians won the toss and went in to bat first but their innings never got going after losing opener and one of their best players of the series Adrian van der Merwe for a golden duck.

Only two players managed double digit scores against the Zimbabwe bowling. Sune Wittmann (21) and Kayleen Green (12) were the highest scorers for the hosts.  But Zimbabwe needed only 9.3 overs to overturn the target.

Marange capped a good day in the office with crisp performances with the bat as she helped the tourists race to victory with an unbeaten 32 runs.

She faced 31 deliveries and struck a quadruple of fours in this easy chase. She was ably assisted by Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano (13 n/o) after her opening partner Modester Mupachikwa had lost her wicket early for four runs.

Zimbabwe won the first game by six wickets last Saturday and then came back the following day charged up to claim an eight wicket victory.

Kapupurika joins Bosso

Eddie Chikamhi Senior Sports Reporter
WINGER Cleopas Kapupurika believes Highlanders could provide the best environment for him to realise his full potential after crossing the Great Divide from Dynamos this week. Kapupurika played for Dynamos in the last two seasons on loan from champions FC Platinum.

But the speedster opted for Bosso following the expiry of his contract with both Dynamos and FC Platinum. “I have signed for two years. It has been my dream to play for Highlanders from a young age and when I got the opportunity I jumped at it the very first time.

“I chose Highlanders because they play my favourite type of football, which is quick, attacking play. They have a good mixture of young players and experience.

“I want to challenge myself to get back to the top of my game. I know I have the potential and I might just realise it fully at Highlanders.

“Football is a short career and I believe a player should always challenge himself to achieve more during the peak period of his career.

“I would like to thank Dynamos for the time I spent there. Of course, in any organisation bad things happen, but those guys really treated me well. I wish I could have spent another season with them but the time has come to move,” said Kapupurika.

Meanwhile, fellow winger Valentine Kadonzvo is in a quandary as he has to choose between taking up a scholarship to study in the United States or to continue another season with the Glamour Boys.

The 25-year-old has been offered a chance to study towards a degree in Electrical Engineering at a university in Boston for the next four years. The programme is expected to begin this March.

Although the former Pamushana High student is understood to have made up his mind to further his studies, it now all depends on whether Dynamos would release him from his contract, which is scheduled to run until the end of 2019.

“I have received a scholarship but I am not sure what will happen yet. I have been applying for scholarships for the past few years and it happened that this time I got a favourable response.

“But Dynamos are my family and at the same time education is also important to secure one’s future,” said Kadonzvo.

A close friend said Kadonzvo has been pleading with the Glamour Boys to release him.

“He is keen on taking it up and all that is left is for Dynamos to clear him. Everything is in place and if he gets the clearance he will have to go to the United States before the end of this month and sadly that would mean he will no longer be available for Dynamos.

“But it’s a great opportunity for him because he will be studying towards his degree on one hand and playing college football as well.

“Football is for a few years but education is a life-time investment.” Dynamos have been losing many players during this pre-season.

Former captain Ocean Mushure has found a new home at Zambia’s Lusaka Dynamos while his successor Marshal Machazane and Peace Makaha have since been unveiled at rival clubs.

FC Platinum Clash Excites Munetsi

Curse of the Pirates

Robson Sharuko Senior Sports Editor
ORLANDO PIRATES will today make an overdue pilgrimage to a city that has always held a special place in its hearts for them. But, beyond the glamour which these Buccaneers carry, is a dark secret of an institution built on a belief in rituals and the imaginary powers of sangomas.

These Pirates are likely to find a City of Kings that has always had a romantic fascination with them, where their black-and-white jerseys are a familiar sight among Highlanders fans.

And where Bosso players also perform the pre-match crossed hands ghost war cry.

The Buccaneers have a Champions League date against FC Platinum at Barbourfields tomorrow.

It’s very unlikely Pirates, the Soweto giants who have the distinction of being the first Southern African side to be crowned champions of the continent, have ever been to a city, outside South Africa, where their brand is such a box-office attraction as is the case in Bulawayo.

Of course, things were very different the last time these Pirates came here on a similar mission, way back in 1997, given they played in Harare where attachment to their institution, among the local fans, isn’t as pronounced as is the case in Bulawayo.

That last visit now looks like an age away — Roberto Carlos was still rocking the world with his sensational “banana shot,’’ free-kick against France, Eric Cantona announced his retirement from football at the age of 30, Mike Tyson bit a chunk of Evander Holyfield’s ear in a heavyweight showdown.

And a certain Tiger Woods won the first of his 14 Major golf titles at the Masters at Augusta National.

Oh, by the way, Dynamos won their final league championship under Sunday Chidzambwa, Black Aces and Blackpool, Zimbabwe Saints, Air Zimbabwe Jets, Amazulu, Lancashire Steel, Mhangura, Arcadia United and Gweru United were still part of the domestic Premiership.

And a Scotsman, Ian Porterfield, who would succumb to colon cancer at the age of 61 in England in September 2007, was the man in charge of the Warriors, having arrived here with a CV that showed he had also coached English Premiership side Chelsea.

But, all that, now belongs to a past where the records will show that Pirates squeezed a 2-1 win over the Green Machine in a Champions League match at the National Sports Stadium with Stewart Murisa on target for Makepekepe.

That match, back in 1997, can never match the hysteria that is certain to greet these Pirates when they roll into the City of Kings today where, unlike in Harare, they have an appeal that can probably never be matched, anywhere outside South Africa.

The Buccaneers, to be fair to them, have earned their stripes — leading the way in showing this region that a club from here could be crowned champions of Africa when they tamed the continent in 1995, and again reaching the final of the same tournament a few years.

But, beyond the glamour associated with their brand, lies a disturbing world that was laid bare by one of the best players to wear their iconic jersey in recent years, midfielder Teko “General’’ Modise, who spent four years at the Buccaneers.

In November 2017, Modise released an explosive autobiography, “The Curse of Teko Modise,’’ where he blew the lid on some of the scary issues that are part of the Pirates culture which he picked from his time at the club.

“There was a lot to get used to at Orlando Pirates,’’ he says in his book. ‘’One of the most interesting things was the role of muti‚’’

The book was written in conjunction with journalist Nikolaos Kirkinis and provides some interesting insights of life at the Pirates, including the employment of a resident sangoma by the club.

“ . . . when Teko arrived at Pirates he met their resident sangoma. In Teko’s first week‚ the sangoma said he was going to try something new.

“In the change room before the game‚ the sangoma placed a stick at the entrance.

“All the players had to jump back and forth over the stick.”

While some of the players were not happy with these traditional ways of trying to empower them to, according to the sangoma, play better and get positive results, they were all forced to do as instructed because they were part of the team. The players would be woken up at midnight to take a bath using water mixed with a concoction of some traditional medicine which the sangoma would have prepared.

“The players would bath in a special mixture‚ then shower‚ climb back into bed and try to sleep before the game,’’ the book reveals. Even with this practice the results were not improving. (The sangoma) determined that the players were not using the muti correctly.

“He realised that they were showering after their bath and therefore the muti was washed off‚ so he devised a new plan.

“Now‚ instead of the players bathing at midnight‚ before the game they would grab their bags‚ go bath . . . then get on the bus to the stadium.

“The water was very black. You have no idea what is in there. You could see some sticks and leaves but who knows what else was in there. It would be very itchy‚ very strange.”

Predictably, the Pirates’ establishment dismissed the story and said they owed their success to their professionalism.

Whatever the case, FC Platinum will be hoping tomorrow’s battle takes the shape of the real life version of the “Curse of the Pirates,’’ the daring sea robbers who used to terrorise the high seas, raiding passing ships, before they were chased away from a business that has now lost its glitter.

After all, these Pirates have never won their domestic league crown for seven years now.

Dembare Still Keen On Sadomba

$

By Eddie Chikamhi
DYNAMOS are confident former Zimbabwe international Edward Sadomba, who is angling for a sensational return to professional football with the Glamour Boys, will be key in their battle to regain lost glory.

The experienced forward is back in the country after a 10-year sojourn in some of the lucrative leagues in North Africa and the Middle East.

Sadomba is understood to have availed himself to Dynamos and coach Lloyd Chigowe is keen to have a look at him.

The speedy veteran forward was a key member of the Glamour Boys just over a decade ago when they reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

He has also played for Sudanese giants Al Hilal, United Arab Emirates Pro League side Ittihad Kalba and Libyan top-flight outfits Al Ahly Benghazi and Al Ahly Tripoli.

He won the CAF Champions League Golden Boot in 2011 and CAF Confederations Golden Boot in 2012 while playing for Sudanese giants Al Hilal.

Sadomba has been inactive in the last year.

At 35, questions could rise whether he will be able to rewind the hand of time and return to his top form.

And, despite genuine concerns over his age, DeMbare chairman Isaiah Mupfurutsa said the door is open for Sadomba and will not hesitate to open the chequebook if the technical team want him.

“I can’t rule out the fact that there are people who were with Dynamos before and they are Dynamos sons.

“For example Sadomba, we all know that he has been playing up to, maybe, just a year ago and where he was playing he left not because he had any problem (in terms of his play) but there were challenges there.

“But he is still a good player, I think. And if the coaches say they want him who are we to say no?” said Mupfurutsa.

Dynamos are facing uncertainty ahead of the start of new season with a number of their senior players reportedly unhappy.

The Glamour Boys struggled in front of goal last season and ended up fighting relegation.

They started their pre-season on Monday with a huge turnout comprising largely of trialists.

Only a handful of contracted players from last season showed up, with the likes of Quality Kangadze, Godfrey Mukambi and Phakamani Dube reportedly on their way out.

Chigowe has indicated he wants to rebuild a competitive side and will seek to infuse youth and experience.

Another prospective signing for the Glamour Boys is midfielder Tanaka Chinyahara who briefly trained with the club last season under Lloyd Mutasa.

Chinyahara, who is a product of the Kaizer Chiefs juniors in South Africa, once had a stint with Hobro IK in Denmark before returning home at the expiry of his contract.

He was linked with a move back to Chiefs last season but it didn’t materialise.

And now DeMbare could swoop on the opportunity since he is a free agent.
