THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) will stage the 2017 Inter-provincial Track and Field Championships at the National Sports Stadium over this weekend.
Athletes from across the country’s 10 provinces will compete in track events, which include 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4×100m and 4×200m relays.
In field events, athletes will compete in discus, shot-put, javelin, hammer throw, high jump, long jump and triple jump.
Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Manuel Mpofu said the province will send 15 athletes and five officials.
“Preparations have been going well and our athletes have been training very hard. This is the best team we have as they were selected according to their performances in previous competitions,” said Mpofu.
Among the athletes representing the province are Trust Chidomaya and Willard Mutasa, who both earned automatic qualification after coming first and second respectively in the ZITF Coca- Cola Four-Minute Mile last month.
“We felt that following their impressive performance in the Coca-Cola Four-Minute Mile they deserve a chance to represent us in long distance races. We are fielding our best athletes in the competition and we have confidence that they will do us proud,” Mpofu said.
He said the team will leave on Friday afternoon after their last training session at White City Stadium.
