COMANCHE Brave – ridden by Evert Pfeiffer – won the 55th Castle Tankard in a thrilling race at Borrowable Race Course, Harare yesterday.
The Amy Bronkhorst-trained horse romped to victory ahead of Royal Honour and Mathematician, earning US$30 000 in one of Africa’s oldest and Zimbabwe’s most prestigious races.
Royal Honour, owned by Juan Taljaard, finished runner-up ahead of Mathematician who came-up short yet again after coming second last year. For their efforts, Royal Honour (Jarryd Penny) and Mathematician (Calvin Habib) got US$10 00 and US$ 6000 respectively.
The winning rider Pfeiffer was full of praise for his horse.
“He is a front-runner and my whole plan was to get him to the front and just let him roll and he kept on rolling,” he said. “We had no one who was challenging him so we don’t really know what’s left in the tank. He is a big horse and I think he can do well. Thanks to the owners and to Amie for bringing me up here I really appreciate it,” Pfeiffer said.
Comanche Brave’s trainer, Bronkhorst, was “out of words” after the triumph.
“As you can see I’m very happy and I can’t describe the win,” she said. “There are no words at the moment, I’m still enjoying the win. It’s a great thing to do.“Thank you to Evert my jockey for coming up (and) the owners,” she said. One of the horse’s owners, Dave Samuels, described the win as “unbelievable”.“I can tell you something right now. I have owned this horse for eight months and it’s been probably five wins out of ten races. To win this in this short space of time is unbelievable. I’ve got partners who are enthusiastic … and it’s been a great day,” said a jubilant Samuels.
