Nyamukondiwa in promising start

Takudzwa Chitsiga Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWE’S representative at this year’s Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship, Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, began his sojourn in United States on a high note after he finished the practice rounds tied on position ten.

Nyamukondiwa is the only player selected to represent the country at the prestigious tournament which will be held at the Biltmore Golf Course in Miami, Florida, from January 2-6.

The annual tournament will see the best junior players invited and it provides a great opportunity for them to meet and liaise with American university coaches in their bid to secure scholarships.

Past notably winners of the tournament include Tiger Woods (1991), the late Zimbabwean Lewis Chitengwa (Jnr) (1992), Kevin Na (2000) and Joaquin Niemann (2014).

Each year Zimbabwe has managed to send at least one representative who has gone on to secure a university scholarship.

Nyamukondiwa started playing golf in August 2011 at Wingate and later moved to join Chapman where he has remained a member.

At the age of 15 he captained Zimbabwe in the Tri-Nations tournament (Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe), which Zimbabwe hosted and subsequently triumphed.

He went on to represent Zimbabwe in the All-Africa Golf Championship which Zimbabwe hosted in 2017 at Royal Harare and Zimbabwe qualified for Japan after finishing in second place.

Nyamukondiwa then represented Zimbabwe in Japan in Toyota World Golf Junior 2017. He is currently ranked the number one junior golfer in the country and 2nd on the amateur National Order of Merit.
