Harare Basketball Association teams have intensified preparations ahead of the 2018-19 season which gets underway next weekend.
The HBA had been scheduled to start this weekend but an urgent meeting by the league’s executive resolved to postpone the season by a week in order to provide enough time for both the clubs and stakeholders to putin place everything necessary.
The HBA held an urgent meeting on Saturday at the City Sports Centre and a number of resolutions were made.
HBA president Sunny Mbofana confirmed the development in a statement yesterday.
“This is a bid to give ample time to both the clubs and the executive to put everything in place.
“Club subscription fees of $300 on the 12-team Men’s A League, 16 Women’s League and a sliding scale and lesser fee for the 16 Promotional and Developmental or Non-Promotional League.
“The lesser fee on developmental league is a way to incentivise and encourage more teams and clubs to come on board while registration fees for each player is $2.
“Sports and Recreation Commission membership registration fees is $4, which includes every participant – that is both players and officials paid through the mother board Basketball Union of Zimbabwe – and BUZ’s handling fee is $1 per member.
“A budget of $15 600 was passed with recommendations that the association concentrate more on the leagues with minimal budgets covering accommodation, affiliation and meals put in place for Interprovincials and Youths Games.”
Mbofana added that they were blessed to sign a contract with Genius Sports, fronted by Allen Mavunga (Head of Partnerships in Africa for Genius Sports Group).
“Genius Sports is a global leader in sports data technology, distribution and commercialisation services and it provides innovative and data-driven solutions to sport, media and regulated betting markets.
“The organiaation will assist HBA leagues to start using FIBA LiveStats and FIBA Organiser for it to capture the statistics of the games being played and also have their clubs and players registered online and bring worldwide recognition to the federation,” he said.
HBA have appointed Chipo Mashingaidze as head of the HBA Marketing Commission in which she becomes a member of the HBA executive.
