Cosafa Women’s Championship draw today

Sports Reporter
THE Mighty Warriors will know their opponents in the first round of the 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship today when the draw is held ahead of the competition which starts on September 12. This year’s regional football extravaganza will be staged in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, with 12 countries scheduled to compete for honours from September 12 to 22.

Zimbabwe will join Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia as well as Cameroon and Uganda, who are coming as guest nations to make it a 12-nation tournament.

The 12 teams will be divided into three groups of four teams each with the top team in each pool progressing to the semi-finals.

The best-placed runner-up across the three groups will also make it through.
The Mighty Warriors, who are yet to go into camp to start their preparations for the tournament, will be hoping to avoid African powerhouse Cameroon, who will be gracing the COSAFA Championship for the first time.

Cameroon have been to major events, including the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada and they have an impressive record on the continent.

Zimbabwe have also made some strides over the years, qualifying for the Olympic Games when they beat Cameroon in 2015.
The Mighty Warriors will be hoping to surpass last year’s performance when they lost 1-2 to four-time champions South Africa.

Zimbabwe won their maiden title in 2011 and will be hoping to win the regional competition for the second time.
