THE partnership between Waddilove High School and Harare City continues to bear fruit after the former cruised to victory in the Mashonaland East Copa Coca-Cola provincial finals at St Francis of Assisi yesterday.
The impressive Marondera-based school beat Murehwa’s St Paul’s Musami 2-0 in the final to grab their maiden ticket to the national finals scheduled for Zvishavane next month.
They will be joined by Rusununguko, who exited in the semi-final stage yesterday, but have an automatic slot in the national finals by virtue of being the defending champions.
Munashe Hungwe and Paradzai Purazi scored in either half for Waddilove, whose flair and flow left the estimated 3 000 spectators stunned.
Harare City entered into a partnership with the school as the Premiership outfit seek to meet the ZIFA and PSL club licensing regulations. And the marriage between the two institutions, which was facilitated by the top-flight club’s marketing manager Osborne Maranda, is heading in the right direction after Waddilove’s flawless display yesterday.
The Ben Zamwarira Gomo-coached side topped their group, which also had Rusununguko, before they dispatched Chivhu District powerhouse Liebenberg 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
They then outsmarted Seke’s Jonas on penalties after having played a goalless draw in regulation time. Gomo was ecstatic after his charges’ achievements.
“I am so excited to have conquered the province today (yesterday),” said Gomo.
“Waddilove have never been to the NASH Copa Coca-Cola finals, let alone the provincial finals, and for us to be in a maiden appearance shows how much we have grown. I want to salute Harare City’s partnership with our school. I have eight players in the team who are juniors from Harare City and the way they inspired us into victory is second to none.”
